| Remanufactured Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner | | 2008-06-04 20:19:04 | | Remanufactured Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum CleanerWe have been using the vacuum for a few weeks now and we are impressed with how good our carpets look. It brought the heavy traffic areas back to life and I no longer think we need to replace the carpet. However, be warned that this is a heavy vacuum. Much heavier than I thought it would be. We have three stories total in our home which means a lot of stairs and using this vacuum on them is a workout. I also agree with another review that the hose is stiff and hard to stretch. Also, the dirt/hair gets clogged in the filter long before the dirt bin has reached its capacity. I dislike having to reach up to unclog it. Overall it is a good product with a lot of power and we have been impressed with the remanufactured version. We were looking at the new ones and we are glad we saved money by going with this option. | | By: Vacuums, Cleaner & Storage Reviews | | |

| | News: From Cyclone Sidr to Cyclone Nargis - an aidworker's perspective | | 2008-05-18 06:08:11 | | An aidworker from Oxfam explains how the immediate effect of the cyclone devastation is only the beginning of misery for those affected. Those on the ground (in Myanmar) are estimating that at least 100,000 people were killed by the storm. The numbers are devastating, each one of them painfully reminding me what a difference an investment into disaster preparedness and early warning systems — like those that have been implemented in Bangladesh — could have made for the families in Myanmar.Surface water that people are used to drinking is likely to be contaminated not only by dead bodies and livestock carcasses, but also human and animal waste spread by floodwaters and overflowing latrines. The weather forecast for this week predicts more heavy rain, and even a new storm approaching the cyclone-affected area. With people’s resistance to disease already weakened after days of living in overcrowded conditions without food and proper roofs over their heads, the children and elderly ar | | By: The Road to the Horizon | | |

| USAID and Cyclone Nargis | | 2008-05-17 04:03:00 | | "In times of crises, politics, ideology, and rule are considered peripheral. It matters little which nation is affected, if it is deemed that the nation cannot - even with good intentions - provide for its people, then a helping hand is extended. Burma’s Generals have little time for America or Americans but for the U.S., the compelling need to provide humanitarian assistance to a shattered populace transcends this." Without the U.S. there’d be hell to pay, wrote Janet Albrechtsen; a columnist with The Australian reminding us that we need, "acknowledge the scorecard: the full spectrum of US hegemony, from its brute military muscle to the soft seduction of American ideas, has been an overwhelming force for good."That was last year; now recall my words in a September 2007 post about her piece:“The U.S. is increasingly dealing with a challenging world. | | | Myanmar Cyclone Victims | | 2008-05-13 10:48:52 | | My heart goes to the love ones and victims, to all people especially the poor children who have suffered or lost loved ones on the May 3 devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar, a country in southeast Asia, formerly known as Burma. (According to Wikipedia, the name of the country was changed in 1989 and and this change of name has been officially recognized by the United Nations). Published reports says the death toll gone up to 34,273. It also said Tuesday that the number of missing now stands at 27,838. According to United Nations, the actual death toll could be between 62,000 and 100,000. Good God!My deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their beloved members. | | Hamann Porsche Cayenne Cyclone | | 2008-02-14 09:44:00 | | The Porsche Cayenne has been a raving succes at the cost of indivualism to their owners. Several German tuning houses have already constructed body kits for the Cayenne, and today Hamann released their latest, and arguably, most extravagant package for the SUV. Hamann gives the Cayenne a wide body aerodynamic component kit consisting of a new front spoiler with two integrated LED-daytime running lights and fog lamps, extended wheel arches for a more imposing look, roof spoiler and rear-facing panel with diffuser. The Cayenne has been lowered by 35mm through a lowering system with pneumatic shock absorption. Hamann has either 22 inch (Anniversary II) or 23 inch (Edition Race) light alloy wheels on offer. With their Hamann sport exhaust system with 4-pipe sports competition silencer, the Laupheim modifiers even tune the sound of the SUV, with some extra horsepower as a nice bonus. | | News: Bangladesh Not Recovered from Cyclone Sidr | | 2008-01-05 16:28:00 | | Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh on November 15 last year, causing massive flooding in the world's 7th most populated country. After the initial response, this emergency disappeared from the world's TV screens, as emergencies often do. And they should not. The effects of natural disasters like the flooding of this size are far more profound than merely the dead to be burried, the homeless to be sheltered, and the sick to be cured.A massive amount of farmland was flooded (553,000 hectares to be exact) by the surge waters and rains, a large part of the rice crop was destroyed. Rice being Bangladesh's staple food, the "real emergency effects" start to surfice now through the food shortages. Rice prices have shot up. Aid agencies are bringing in over half a million ton of rice. But this time, I don't want to talk much about these massive aid operations. I wanted to show you one thing that I found while browsing on the topic of Cyclone Sidr: how one individual tried to make a difference, with the tools he has at his disposal, answering the question people often as us, aid workers: "How can *I* make a difference?" Well, here is an example how one can:An article about Sidr's relief efforts I found in Globalvoices, pointed me to Vlogger Shawn's Uncultured Project. Shawn is a 26 year old former graduate student from the University of Notre Dame. After a presentation about the "This generation's home work to end poverty", he was inspired to go to Bangladesh for a self-funded project to see what difference HE could make in helping some of the world's worst off under the motto: "Are we doing enough to make a the world a better place?" Here is his video story:

At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allergens. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine. I decided it was time for a Dyson and ordered it that day. My Dyson Slim arrived on Wednesday, a mere 3 days after I had last vacuumed, and I was shocked to see how much dirt my old machine left behind. I had to empty the dirt container several times and my carpets look almost new (8 years old)! My husband said the carpets even feel "fluffier" than ever before.Somewhat disappointed Having read rave reviews, I decided to purchase this item. I replaced my Sears Progressive cannister with the Dyson slim. While it is not difficult to navigate, it is not that easy either. It is a bit heavier than I had anticipated. Also, it does not pick up dirt the way I expected. Sometimes I have to go over the same spot two or three times until the dirt is gone. I am not happy with the amount of time it takes to vacuum a room and no matter how long I vacuum, I am not completely satisfied with the result.I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the suction so I stupidly placed my finger near the roller! Suction was fine - I almost took my finger off! Also, the vacuum comes with a kickstand and it doesn't work well. The vacuum keeps flopping over if the least amount of pressure is applied to it (someone brushing against it). On the positive side, it is nice not to have to replace a bag. | | MIDDLE EAST: Cyclone Gonu Batters Southern Iran; People Evacuated | | 2007-06-07 07:27:00 | | Cyclone Gonu, the worst to hit the Arabian Peninsula in more than 60 years, battered southern Iran, prompting authorities to close schools and universities, cancel some flights and evacuate thousands of people from coastal areas. The Health Ministry put hospitals on alert in southern Hormuzgan and Sistan-Baluchistan provinces late yesterday as the storm approached, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The cyclone's outer winds knocked out electricity power lines in the port cities of Konarak and Chabahar, as people took refuge in shopping malls, IRNA said. Gonu's center was 88 kilometers (55 miles) south of the town of Jask on the southern coast of Iran at 3:30 a.m. today, according to the latest U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center advisory. Gonu's winds fell to 83 kilometers per hour as the storm moved north-northwest across the Gulf of Oman at 13 kilometers per hour. The storm hit the east coast of Oman yeste | | By: energy BLOG | | |
| | UNITED KINGDOM: Oil surges to $70 as cyclone nears Gulf | | 2007-06-05 15:58:00 | | Oil surged above $70 yesterday on news a cyclone was headed toward the Arabian peninsula with the potential to disrupt shipping and output. Top exporter Saudi Arabia said it expected its oil facilities to escape unscathed from the gathering storm. Fellow Opec member the UAE also appeared to be outside the path of the storm, a shipping agent said. Oman put its army and police on high alert, however, and warned the population of very high waves when winds of up to 205km per hour reached land. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July delivery soared $1.33 to settle at $70.40 per barrel. New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, closed up a hefty $1.13 at $66.21 per barrel. "Prices have turned around on news of a major tropical storm that has the potential to interrupt oil shipments from the Gulf," said Addison Armstrong of TFS Energy Futures in the US.
