No More Abortions in South Dakota?
    2008-07-22 16:16:12
Hehe...this article from Slate.com encapsulated the insanity that has forever gripped the anti-abortion movement. The double-speak required to pass this recent bit of legislation is beyond Orwellian. According to this recent mandate, abortion "will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being." Huh? Can you run that by me one more time? An implanted embryo is whole, separate, and unique? Then why does a mere separation of the placenta from the uterine wall inevitably result in death? Whether it happens via mechanical methods or spontaneously, it seems to be a near certainty that until the point of viability, which is somewhere between 20 and 28 weeks, detaching this supposedly whole and separate human being will result in its demise.I agree with the author of this article: Abortions should be renamed "separations," and those who choose separation should no longer be held accountable for the consequences. After all, it is a "whole, separat

Tax Foundation Urges a Stop to South Dakota's Discriminatory Insurance Taxes
    2008-04-15 23:00:00
The Tax Foundation, in a friend-of-the-court brief filed with the South Dakota Supreme Court, urges that state to stop its discriminatory insurance tax system that taxes out-of-state companies at twice the rate of in-state companies. The case, Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. v. Kinsman, is currently before the court on a petition for rehearing. Since explicit discrimination in rates was struck down as violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1985, South Dakota is one of 8 remaining states that seek to protect their domestic insurance companies by imposing heavier taxes on out-of-state companies doing business in the state. While on paper all companies pay the same 2.5% rate, in-state companies automatically receive rate reductions, lowering their tax bill to 0.75% to 1.25%. The result is effective discrimination against out-of-state companies which violates the Equal Protection Clause, as the trial judge concluded. While the trial judg

After careful cleaning and removing rock from its body, scientists were able to identify the dinosaur as an Edmontosaurus. Something I have been thinking it was. Especially since this fossil was found dated to about 67 million years [...]

    2008-02-07 09:00:00
CWT - Bismark, ND. Cats With Thumbs midwest affilate reports year long secret negotiations between the U.S. & Canada are in the " final stages, " and the U.S. State of North Dakota is expected to become the 11th Canadian Province before the end of 2008. If the annexation proceeds as planned, it will be the first peaceful reduction of United States continental territory and the first and only U.S. State to be sold to another country. The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade refused official comment when asked for verification by CWT reporters on location in Ottawa. A Canadian Foreign Affairs official told Cats With Thumbs off the record: " We couldn't be happier - as you are no doubt aware, Canada is seldom at the forefront of global media interest and the country as a whole has been in a rather grumpy malaise for quite some time. This acquisition from the United States makes us a player again in the world news cycle and gives Canadians a small sense of vi

California Pizza Kitchen Dakota Smashed Pea and Barley Soup.
    2006-12-26 05:33:00
Got one of those cool hand blenders? You know, the kind of gadget that used to be pitched onthose annoying yet compelling late-night infomercials? It comes in handy for this recipe, whichrequires the split peas to be smashed into a smooth consistency, just like the original. If you don't have a hand mixer, a standard blender works just fine. This soup is very tasty and very low in fat. And the barley gives it a special chunky consistency and added flavor that isn't found in most pea soups.2 cups split peas6 cups water2 14.5-ounce cans chicken broth (4 cups)1/3 cup minced onion1 large clove garlic, minced2 teaspoons lemon juice1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon granulated sugar1/4 teaspoon dried parsley1/4 teaspoon white pepperdash dried thyme1/2 cup barley6 cups water2 medium carrots, diced (about 1 cup)1/2 stalk celery, diced (1/4 cup)Garnishchopped green onion1.Rinse and drain the split peas, then add them to a large pot with 6 cups of water, chickenbroth, onion, garlic, lemon juice, salt,
