| | Dolphins sign safeties Darius and Thompson | | 2007-09-12 03:40:58 | | The Dolphins today placed safety Yeremiah Bell on the IR. However, they also found a replacement for Bell. In fact, they signed two replacements: Donovan Darius and Lamont Thompson. To make room for both, the Dolphins also waived Akbar Gbaja-Biamila. Darius is a hard hitting safety who excels in run support and has played in 115 career games, all with Jacksonville. He has 2 career sacks, 14 career interceptions, and 35 passes defensed. However, each of his last 2 seasons were cut short by season ending injuries. Thompson started his career with Cincinnati. In 77 career games with the Bengals and Titans, Thompson has 9 interceptions and 20 passes defensed. Thompson is considered a very good "centerfielder" and has a knack for being around the ball. But when put in an isolated one-on-one situation, he tends to get beat. It'll be interesting to see which one gets the start on Sunday, if any do. Darius was one of the game's best safeties up until he suffered 2 season ending injuries in each of the past 2 seasons. This offseason, Darius was cut by Jacksonville, his longtime team. Despite already having two solid safeties, the Oakland Raiders are ready to take a chance on former Jags safety Donovin Darius. The Raiders on Tuesday signed Darius, a big-time hitter in the secondary who has missed parts of the last two years with injuries. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Jags before being cut, by the surprise of many, this past June. “We are extremely excited about adding Donovin to the Raiders,” said Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin. “He will bring us immediate competition in our secondary. Donovin exemplifies hard work and dedication to the game. Working with Donovin at Jacksonville, I was able to see what a phenomenal competitor he is. He will fit great into our team philosophy.”
