| | Subprime debacle may spark 2-year credit recession | | 2008-06-04 11:50:00 | | By Walden SiewNEW YORK (Reuters) - A "credit recession" sparked by the U.S. housing market downturn and excesses in structured finance may last more than two years, and the financial sector will undergo "massive consolidation," leading Wall Street strategists said on Wednesday. The fallout from deteriorating subprime mortgages and the broader housing and credit crisis will eventually lead to a healthier market, but not until after a prolonged purging process, Jack Malvey, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc's (NYSE:LEH - News) chief global fixed-income strategist, said in New York."We're going through a tough spell with regard to credit," Malvey said at a Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association conference. The "subprime debacle" due to years of excess and easy credit will be followed by years of tight credit, Malvey said.Malvey spoke a day after his company's stock plunged to close at nearly a five-year low on concern that Wall Street's smallest surviving major brokerage may need... | | By: How to be Rich, Happy and Free from Scams | | |

This is equal to around 0.3 percent of gross domestic product.Soaring tax revenue had helped Spain accumulate a public sector surplus. It included the accounts of the central government, regional governments and the social security administration. It was equal to 2.2 percent of GDP in 2007.

| | Ford gets dinged again for Bridgestone debacle, lawyers make out like bandits | | 2008-04-19 09:06:00 | | By now everyone knows the story about Bridgestone's massive recall of tires that were used as original equipment on Ford Explorers from 1991 to 2001. The faulty tires had been linked to some fatal crashes that were caused by either blowouts or the tread separating from the tires. Many people who own Explorers from this period were miffed that the value of their SUVs dropped solely on account of Bridgestone's mistake, so they did what most Americans do when they're angry: they sued Ford. Yesterday a judge in the Sacramento Country Superior Court approved a settlement for this class-action lawsuit on behalf of approximately 800,000 Explorer owners that will cost Ford a sizable chunk of change, but it's not the Explorer owners who got the most money. As part of the settlement, Ford has agreed to hand out discount certificates valid for one year that these plaintiffs can apply to the purchase or lease of a FoMoCo product. The discounts are worth $500 if applied to a new Explorer, and $300 ... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Pentagon institute calls Iraq war ‘a major debacle’ with outcome ‘in doubt’ | | 2008-04-18 20:18:41 | | WASHINGTON — The war in Iraq has become “a major debacle” and the outcome “is in doubt” despite improvements in security from the buildup in U.S. forces, according to a highly critical study published Thursday by the Pentagon’s premier military educational institute.

| The Iraq Debacle | | 2008-04-17 01:57:48 | | The candidates' plans to end the Iraq war | Salon News "I think the bottom-up approach has the potential to produce stability in Iraq. It is not a guarantee, but it is far and away the most plausible possibility at the moment," he said. "The stability it would provide is not going to be Eden on the Euphrates. This is not going to produce a Jeffersonian democracy and act as a beacon of freedom for the Middle East and all the rest any time soon," he added. "But a stabilized Iraq that looks a lot more like Bosnia or Kosovo rather than Germany or Japan [after World War II] would nevertheless meet the critical American objectives of this war at this point."None of them have it right. The truth is that thanks to years of idiocy by the bush administration there is no way out of Iraq that ends well. The best we can hope for is that the country won't devolve into all out civil war. Generally speaking I dismiss McCain's plan out of hand, mostly because it's based on Bush's plan which has dem... | | By: Markism Explored | | |
| | The Villar Debacle | | 2007-12-10 10:01:17 | | The countdown to the 2010 Presidential Elections has long begun and all the major political players have started to muster their resources for the big fight.
One of these big players is of course Senate President Manny Villar. This is unsolicited advice, but here’s something that I think Villar’s camp should correct if it’s really serious [...]... | | By: Postcard Headlines
| | Partylist Debacle | | 2007-06-26 16:07:37 | | Three progressive groups are expected to join the winning circle of partylists, namely Bayan Muna, Gabriela Women’s Party, and Anakpawis. The block’s retaining of the six seats that it won in the 2004 elections will still have to be seen. It all depends on whether the Comelec’s usual 2-4-6 formula or former SC chief Panganiban’s Veteran Party’s Formula will be used.
However, Oscar Franklin Tan offers a better suggestion in an article featured in PDI’s Talk of Town titled Partylist System: Mathematical Absurdity:

| | RE: The Tostitos NCAA Football Debacle | | 2007-01-09 17:17:30 | | It all went down just as predicted here on The Frog Bog. It was a blowout. The fourth quarter was boring. The loser’s point total was less than 20. There was one minor problem, however. In part, my prediction stated “Ohio State defeats Florida.” That was a typo. I didn’t have spell check on. What I meant to write was, “Florida Smushes Ohio State into Tiny Little Pieces.”
This leaves a few questions:
1. Does Ohio State coach Jim Tressel wish he’d voted for anyone but Florida in the final coaches poll he abstained from?
2. Is the SEC really that powerful a football conference?
3. Does the BCS, in fact, really work?
4. If Gatorade gets poured over a coach and ruins his fanchy headset, does the school have a fund set aside to pay for it, or does it come out of the pourer’s pocket?
5. I know these things are battery-powered now, but did a coach ever get electrocuted by a Gatorade bath back in the plug-in h... | | By: The Frog Bog
