Educational Toys to Improve Attention Deficit Disorder
    2008-06-29 00:00:00
Children with attention deficit disorder often struggle in school because of their short attention spans. Many quickly decide that they are “dumb” or “stupid” when the simple truth is that their condition is causing them to fail in the traditional school setting, which requires children to focus on one activity for an extended period of [...]

Citigroup warns of Barclays rights issue deficit
    2008-06-28 22:58:00
By Philip AldrickLast Updated: 12:01am BST 28/06/2008Barclays' £4.5bn fundraising falls about £9bn short of what is necessary to absorb credit-related writedowns and bring the bank's capital in line with European peers, Citigroup claims in a note to clients. The British bank's shares came in for more heavy selling following the note, dropping to 289½p at one stage yesterday before ending the day down 5¾ at 298p.Citi analysts said that simply moving Barclays' core tier one capital in line with its closest peer, Royal Bank of Scotland, would require an extra £2.5bn. If Barclays was to write down its credit-related positions to the same degree as RBS the figure "increases to circa £9bn".Barclays has taken just £1.7bn of writedowns this year, compared with £5.9bn at RBS, leading some to believe that it has not been sufficiently prudent in its assumptions. The bank thought it had allayed some concerns this week by securing backing from several existing shareholders as well as new ones

More on New Hampshire’s Budget Deficit (Governor Lynch Still Sucks)
    2008-06-11 18:15:42
Once again when writing about Governor Lynch I have to ask, does this sound like leadership to you? To deal with the state’s budget shortfall, the governor had proposed bonding $80 million of operating expenses. The House had quite sensibly rejected borrowing money to solve the budget mess. The governor, to whose popularity most of them [...]

    2008-05-06 12:16:14
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) announced the Australian balance on goods and services in seasonally adjusted terms was a deficit of A$2,736 million in March 2008, a decrease of A$525 million, or 16%, on the revised deficit in February 2008.According to the ABS, the decrease in the deficit was due to a rise in goods and services credits, mainly within the non-rural and other goods sector. This outweighed the rise in goods and services debits, mainly within the capital and consumption goods sector.Goods and services credits rose A$816 million, or 4%, to A$19,176 million. Non-rural and other goods rose A$657 million (5%), with rural goods rising A$122 million (6%). US Trade deficit widens despite a weaker dollar
    2008-04-11 10:09:00
The U.S. trade deficit unexpectedly grew in February, as surging imports overwhelmed a rush of record high exports. A widening trade gap is the opposite of what most analysts anticipated, as a weak dollar and slackening demand were supposed to have made trade the one bright spot in what is now almost certainly a recession. The trade gap jumped 5.7% to $62.3 billion in February, up from a revised $59 billion the month prior, as cars, industrial machinery, and pharmaceuticals carried imports to a record high $213.7 billion.Exports climbed 2.0% to $151.36 billion from $148.38 billion, but the increase still wasn’t enough to outpace imports, leaving analysts to wonder whether or not exports would be the saving grace of a U.S. economy that seems to have run head first into a recession. Many economists, including those at the U.S. Federal Reserve, have said that foreign demand for U.S. goods would continue to prop up the ailing economy. The theory was supported by a weak dollar, and a dr

Julia's Brain Tries On Attention Deficit Disorder
    2008-03-04 15:01:00
I've got a list of different thoughts in my head. I just need to write it down and am going to blog it to show what a mess my head is today.- I need to pick up birthday cards, use the $10 JCPenney coupon and free coupon thing for Victoria's Secret.- I need to make sure I get the next set of quilts into the wash and that I get the bed made up tonight.- I need to remember that the next time I want to live blog something, I can just Twitter it rather than worry about finding a computer to log onto. It'll show up in the sidebar anyway.- Maybe I need to stop by Office Max to pick up file folder labels so I can re-use some old file folders and switch out labels on the hanging files in the old filing cabinet.- I wonder if I can convince Matt to stop by Target on Saturday. I really need a couple new dresses and they had some cute ones that were nicely priced. It would solve some of my "What the hell am I going to wear for Mark's birthday party/Easter/3 million weddings??" issue.- I wonder

    Budget Deficit Update. . .
    2007-10-12 18:48:13
This week's data once again proves that lower marginal tax rates on capital gains and income enable the government to lower the Federal budget deficit. Now the White House is claiming that the deficit is lower because of good tax policy and fiscal restraint. This is a total lie. Washington has demonstrated no such fiscal discipline. It does however illustrate just how effective tax cuts are at lowering the deficit when you consider it has been accomplished amidst rampant federal spending. Imagine what could be done if we even slowed the growth of spending let alone cut it.The facts are pretty hard to ignore, which is probably why Democrats are mum on the issue all of a sudden. This past year the budget deficit was reduced by $163 billion. This means the budget deficit is now 1.2% of GDP. This number is well below the historical average of 1.6%. So when liberals tell you that we are going bankrupt because of war spending, it should be pretty clear to you that they are lying.Democrats will ignore these successes and still try to use the deficit as their excuse for raising taxes. Their accomplices in the media will start telling us we need a budget surplus. I recall the last time we had a budget surplus (on paper..we had a little thing called a recession which eliminated that) and Al Gore couldn't talk enough about how much of it he wanted to spend. He of course never considered the idea that it wasn't his money!!!! But I digress. The fact is raising taxes will only serve to grow the deficit. To see why this is the case all we have to do is see what happened the last 2 times Democrats raised our taxes in 1991 and 1993.Related EditorialsDianne Feinstein is a Big Fat Pig: Congressional Pork-barrel Spending/ Earmarks are Out of Control under Nancy PelosiLiberals and TaxesDemocrat Party Tries To Kill Cigar Industry . . .The Wall Separating Economics and StateWhile Europe Cuts Taxes, Democrats Fight War on American ProsperityBloomberg: The Biggest Little Man in Big Government

United States Budget Deficit Is At Its Lowest Level in 5 Years: Liberal Experts Surprised
    2007-10-11 21:36:29
It is amazing how liberals are astonished that United States budget deficit is at its lowest level in 5 years. I continuously have told our subscribers that: it is called the Laffer Curve. When the government lowers taxes, people invest more, spend more, hire more workers, and government revenue increases. But, liberals always want to raise taxes for the sake of raising taxes. It also makes them feel better about themselves for punishing the most industrious people in our society.Presently, the budget deficit is $162 Billion dollars. This means that the deficit will be eliminated by 2012, so long as Hillary Clinton is not elected. If she is elected, she will create new entitlement programs and pay for these programs with new taxes; she will also eliminate President Bush’s tax cuts. Hillary Clinton’s socialist policies will reduce government revenue in the long-term, and the new programs will permanently increase our National Debt. This would be disastrous.Pathetically, had the Democrats created a $2.7 trillion budget this year instead of a $2.9 trillion budget, there would have been no deficit. But, of course the Democrats cannot allow people to realize that Bush’s tax policy works. God forbid the Country does well at the expense of Democrat’s power.(Source)Related EditorialsDianne Feinstein is a Big Fat Pig: Congressional Pork-barrel Spending/ Earmarks are Out of Control under Nancy PelosiLiberals and TaxesDemocrat Party Tries To Kill Cigar Industry . . .The Wall Separating Economics and StateWhile Europe Cuts Taxes, Democrats Fight War on American ProsperityBloomberg: The Biggest Little Man in Big Government

    Our Ugly Deficit
    2007-07-24 19:14:12
With the United States federal government continuously running extreme deficits even through some of the most substantial capital gains receipt years in history, it may be time for the U.S. citizenry to stand up and demand accountability on the part of our elected leaders. Right now taxpayer dollars are extracted and pissed away on numerous projects, wars, wealth redistribution schemes and other endeavors that have been proven to be immensely uneconomical and a drain on the vitality of our long-term economy as well as a burden on future generations. Not to mention that each project is completed with brute force as its basis (if you disagree, think about what would happen if you decided not to support government activity and willfully abstain from paying taxes - the feds would be kicking down your door ASAP). Allowing the charge to be led are Keynesian deficit-spending principles, fiat monetary policy whereby politicians feel they have a blank check and can simply inflate away all gove

    The Two Year Deficit
    2007-07-22 07:55:00
There is a new book in our house. I don't know how it happened. Something slipped and Adum and I agreed to buy a book today. The past year has been a blissful oasis of internet chess, obsessive blogging, NBA games and napping. There was no question in my mind that I had advanced past books. And yet here we are again. As I write, Adum lies on our bed reading the latest Harry Potter novel. I hear the wisp of pages turning every few minutes and I'm intrigued. The day of reckoning is upon us. I had convinced myself that I didn't need to read anymore. I had convinced myself that as a mother, blogger and competitive sleeper, books were a thing of the past. I listed most of our books for sale on half.com last year and have been slowly selling off our collection. Some bring in ten bucks, some only a few cents, but the feeling of freedom I get every time I stick one in the outgoing mailbox is priceless. All those words, all that information freed into the world to puzzle and stretch

Why Is the Federal Deficit Falling and Will It Continue to Fall?
    2007-07-12 07:00:00
Yesterday, the White House's Office of Management and Budget released its revised forecast for the fiscal year 2007 deficit. Originally projected to be $244 billion, the revised figure put the amount at $205 billion. And for fiscal year 2008, which begins in October, the projected deficit is now $258 billion. While the deficits remain relatively high in dollar figures, especially compared to the surplus the federal government ran in 2000, the deficit as a percentage of GDP is still relatively small.Below are some points that you may not hear from administration sources or administration foes.(1)        The deficit projections are based upon current law, meaning that any AMT patch that is passed for this year will increase the deficit for both fiscal years 2007 and 2008. Also, education tax credits may be expanded for both fiscal years, and for fiscal year 2008, it is likely that the itemized deduction for sales taxes paid will be extended. Further

NCP Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD
    2007-05-14 02:36:00
DSM-IV 314.00 ADHD predominantly inattentive type 314.01 ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type 314.01 ADHD combined type 314.9 ADHD NOS This disorder is associated with inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive behavior that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level. This behavior creates clinically significant impairment in social/academic functioning. Accurate diagnosis is difficult, as symptoms resemble depression, learning disabilities, or emotional problems. The diagnosis is made through extensive observation of the child’s behavior; however, contact with health professionals is limited and the child’s activity may be misleading during short office visits. Reports from parents and teachers are often used to make the diagnosis, and their observations may be distorted, as they assume a problem exists and often predetermine the diagnosis themselves. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The child with this disorder has impaired ego development. Ego development is retarded and manifested impulsive behavior represents unchecked id impulses, as in severe temper tantrums. Repeated performance failure, failure to attend to social cues, and limited impulse control reinforce low self-esteem. Some theories suggest that the child is fixed in the symbiotic phase of development and has not differentiated self from mother. Genetic/Biological The disorder may be gender-linked as the incidence is higher in boys than in girls (3:1). ADHD is also more prevalent among children whose siblings have been diagnosed with the same disorder. Recent studies have established that the fathers of hyperactive children are more likely to be alcoholic or to have antisocial personality disorders. Affected children have shown the presence of subtle chromosomal changes and mild neurological deficits with irregular brain function including too little activity in the area that inhibits impulsiveness. Hyperactivity may result from fetal alcohol syndrome, congenital i

    Nature Deficit Disorder
    2007-05-02 17:21:00
Just got a copy of the Book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder and started reading it today. It is reinforcing a lot of ideas I knew to be true, having grown up in forested seclusion, and helping me realize a whole skill set of which I was only vaguely conscious until recently. Will toss up a review upon completion (which at my current speed of reading might be one or two months unfortunately). In the meantime, here's what the web has to say:http://www.xanga.com/Pfeffy/445299279/long-time-to-write.htmlhttp://dir.salon.com/story/mwt/feature/2005/06/02/Louv/index.htmlhttp://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4665933http://www.edutopia.org/1629http://www.wbhm.org/News/2006/NatureDeficit.htmlhttp://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2006/03/30/louv/http://www.truthforce.info/?q=node/view/1175http://www.truthforce.info/?q=node/view/2186

Help For One With A Fabric Knowledge Deficit Or Restyling & Reconstruction, Part 2
    2006-12-14 14:13:00
Whew, now that's an awkward post title if I ever wrote one! I'm actually showcasing a new addition to my suit category - a wonderful 1960s/70s vintage, 2 piece skirt ensemble. It's constructed totally from an antique paisley shawl, wool I believe and an extraordinary find. This is one of those garments you can't stop looking at. The lush, exotic pattern and the rich colors of the fabric just grab your eye.I've had it tucked away for a bit of time. I couldn't exactly identify the fabric. I knew it was wool (via the burn test, if it smells like singed hair then you've got an organic material) and I knew certainly that it wasn't made in the U.S. I was guessing India, Turkey, Middle East. etc. I even took it to a local fabric retailer, to no avail. It didn't occur to me that it might have been a shawl, though it should have. But thanks to the folks at the Needle Arts & Textiles Board at eBay and their propensity to generously disperse their wisdom to anybody who shows up with a question, I believe it's correctly identified. I'm not a regular poster (I'm a true novice when it comes to fabric identification) but I've popped in a couple of times with a query and always got a prompt & kind response. It seems to be a genial, civilized board with tons of good info. Not something that can be said of all public boards or forums. This set also ties in with my previous post about vintage restyling - to my eye if your going to hack up an antique textile you may as well make it into something classy, eternally stylish and immensely attractive.
