Photo by Peter Lee.Northern Clay Center 2424 Franklin Avenue East Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406 USAFor the past eight months, six artists who work in porcelain have been shipping bisque ware to one another, forms that are distinctive and representative of their individual work. Their collaborators have then glazed and fired the bisqued work in their particular gaze palettes. While the potters in this exhibition were able to see the forms which they were finishing, the instruction to complete the pots in their own styles has resulted in a combination of forms and finishes that is occasionally as startling as a surrealist collage.More details | | By: teapots teapots teapots

It's been another year of tremendous changes in the music business that have brought both exciting opportunities and challenges for an independent label like ourselves. The more the market and technology transforms around us however, one thing remains a constant in our world: Six Degrees could not exist without the patronage and good will of our loyal consumers. To everyone who has purchased our music, played our releases on the radio, written about us in a publication, blogged about us and helped to spread the word about us by telling their friends, we want you to know that we never take your support for granted. For our part, I promise that we have an amazing line up of releases slated for 2008 and we plan to do everything in our power to continue to earn your loyalty. My business partner Pat Berry and I, as well as the entire staff of Six Degrees Records, wishes you and yours a great holiday season and we look forward to an exciting 2008 filled with eclectic sounds from around the planetBob DuskisPresident & Co-Founder Six Degrees Recordswww.sixdegreesrecords.com | | By: Six Degrees Records News
| | Blessings and Happy Holy-days from Six Degrees Emerging Artist Rara Avis. | | 2007-12-17 14:17:00 | | ThoughtsbyRara AvisI have to say, and I'm not looking for brownie points - I LOVE SIX DEGREES. I've loved it ever since it started... I loved co-founders Bob Duskis & Pat Berry's taste back when they were producers for Windham Hill (although at the time I didn't know who they were). So for me, to now be working with Six Degrees as an artist is truly a dream come true. (In fact it was the one thing I asked the Universe for when my first album came out - to get it into the hands of Six Degrees... and voila! six months later, Bob emailed me having heard it and the rest is history.)For artists like myself, who make music because it brings me to a mystical state more than almost any other discipline, it is so vital that a record company like Six Degrees exist. As it allows me to have total freedom as a creative individual, and it also allows for an honest, open relationship with those who are responsible for representing me in the larger world of the music industry. I feel safe and secure, and deal with them directly - no lawyers, managers, or agents trying to get a piece of the pie (the pie is more like a cupcake at this point, but it's growing all the time!) They are wholly responsible for making sure that artists like myself have a voice in the ever crowded, often dulled down world of mass media. As for the industry at large, I'm truly grateful that technology has provided a medium for artists to represent themselves - rather than big companies always having a strangle hold on distribution, promotion and marketing. The result is that more and more honest, groovy music is getting out to the masses without the white collar middle man making most of the profit. Don't get me wrong - I have compassion for even the worst of criminals... white collar business men who hoard money and power are just missing a strong sense of community and probably feel more alone inside than most on this planet. For the record, I don't believe anyone is inherently evil - it | | By: Six Degrees Records News | | |

and whimsical doodles
the crowd circles clock
wise and a blur of wool
streamers snap in the icy
air. A man in a feather
brooched tam o’shanter
gives me a wink and a
nod as he slices past my
corner. His eyes say he
knows me, puffed up and
swollen with only a slit
of visible iris. My eyes
mumble back in awkward

My mittens fumble with

I stall and lift my gaze as

draws near and I draw breath,
as he flawlessly maneuvers

my bold thoughts grab him.
He dazzles ice with perfect

Bebel Gilberto’s Momento and CéU’s self-titled release both received nominations for “Best Contemporary World Music Album.” Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s United We Swing received a nomination for “Best Tropical Latin Album.” This is major milestone for the 10-year old independent record label.“It’s great to see all of these talented artists recognized by the academy,” says Bob Duskis, president and co-founder of Six Degrees Records. “We are proud of all of them and of our staff’s amazing efforts to promote them this year”Bebel Gilberto’s highly anticipated third album, Momento, presented some of her most elegant and personal musical statements since bursting on the scene in 2000, when her Grammy nominated debut album Tanto Tempo took the world by storm and conquered audiences worldwide. Momento debuted at #4 on the Billboard’s World Music charts and in the Billboard Top 200 Charts. The album draws on the graceful, low-key electronica of Tanto Tempo and the enchanting, acoustic simplicity of her second self-titled album. Press accolades quickly came in, stating her album as “Intoxicating, as sweet and soft and sultry as summer twilight” by USA Today, while Parade Magazine claimed “Bebel Gilberto blends traditional Brazilian rhythms with fresh electronica for a sound as complex and sweet as a caipirinha.”In April 2007, Brazilian newcomer CéU (pronounced ‘Cell’ with a soft ‘L’) released her self-titled debut album in the U.S. as the first international artist on Starbucks’ Hear Music Debut Series. Six Degrees Records would like to send their sincerest condolences to Patato’s family, friends, and fans. Six Degrees Records released Patato: The Legend of Cuban Percussion, in 2000 to great critical acclaim.“We are saddened by Patato’s passing and feel really fortunate that we got to work with him. He was truly one of the last great congueros of his generation and a really unique character as well,” says Bob Duskis, president and co-founder of Six Degrees Records. “The world of Latin music will be a more boring place without him.”Patato was a master conguero who has played with every giant in the history of salsa and jazz, including Machito, Cachao, Arsenio Rodriguez, Mario Bauza, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann, Art Blakey, Tito Puente and Quincy Jones. The Legend of Cuban Percussion collects the best performances from Patato’s Grammy nominated Ritmo y Candela sessions where he teamed up with Changuito, Orestes Vilató, saxophonist Enrique Fernandez, Joe Santiago, Rebeca Mauleón-Santana, African greats Samba Mapangala and Abdou M'boup, as well as young Cuban jazz stars Omar Sosa, Yosvany Terry, Ivan "Melon" Gonsalez and producer Greg Landau.“Patato was one of the great Cuban musicians who changed the way people play the instrument today, says producer Greg Landau. His humor and melodic sensibility came through his congas and gave a unique feel to everything he played on. He taught many of us how to use percussion in modern music and forged a new path for percussionists. We will miss him.”A true Cuban legend who has lived in New York since 1954, Patato was considered by many to be one of the greatest Cuban conga players of all time. Six Degrees is also one of the first labels to truly embrace the web, with digital-only offerings, free downloads, and countless remixes available in almost real-time. Three recent arrivals in Six Degrees web-based Emerging Artist Series are EPs from David Starfire, Alien Chatter, and Harri Kakoulli. Artist: David StarfireAlbum: Bombay Beatz David Starfire's Bombay Beatz starts out incredibly strong with the track "Indian Fever" which sounds familiarly like label-mates Midival Punditz's "Bhangra Fever" and this should be considered a compliment. The great tablas rhythms and twangy sitars means you'll be hearing it on the next LAist mix. Ranging from superb chillout ("Stargazer") to frenetic junglism ("Shaddi") it's a great EP with the exception of the track "Sucka Free". The instrumentation is | | By: Six Degrees Records News

As I am still in the get-all-the-info-you-can phase, I bumped into a lot of people suggesting that being an event planner means being continuously updated with trends and practices.Such need is in fact understandable as events require skills from fairly different areas. In my previous post I was considering to focus on what I can do best and outsource all the rest to someone more expert than I am.Ok, it is a good point and I still believe in that, but on the other hand, clients expect a wide competence in event managers and being unaware of what budgeting is might be a downfall. So at some stage I am sure I will consider engaging in a university degree. As a matter of fact, I did my BA and MBA and I feel pretty sick just looking at a uni book and my overall motivation toward the course might be at the lowest.Thank God we have that thing called the Internet and I thought about Online courses. I didn’t even have to say anything to Dogger, sh was like “You know, I understand. I think I’ll just stay splayed out on the floor here and you do whatever you need to do”. As to the splaying, I would have thought that linoleum would be cooler for doggy splaying than wood but apparently, the wood is the cooler of the two surfaces. Also, The Kitty owns the kitchen and I’m pretty sure that Dogger has just learned that the wood is the safer alternative. It’s cool because she keeps hers. Before work this morning I wanted to get something out of my car, I didn’t get it out because I had pulled the car too far forward and so I couldn’t open the passenger door all the way. Sucks being my green tea. I was going to get my keys and reposition the car but as I was going back in the house I saw something in my recycling bin.I screamed.Okay, I shrieked, it was ear | | By: Reading In The Dark
