I figured I would be cold. I mean we had a huge snow storm eight days before. But I didn't realize how cold, and I certainly did not count on being in a cold desert with the wind blowing dust into my face.It took me a while to find which field the boys were on, and it had been my intention to catch the last 15 minutes of the game. But the first game had gone long and so I ended up getting there at the top of the 2nd inning. I like watching my kids play sports, but baseball is not my favorite. Part of the problem is that at that age, it is mostly a pitching game, because there are so few hits. So it's all about balls and strikes and if your son is not the pitcher or the catcher, it isn't exactly action packed. Another exhibition season for the Cubs in Arizona came to an end on Thursday....with a tie game. Both the Cubs and the Brewers teed-off against mostly minor league pitchers at HoHoKam and the result was a total of 20 runs on 26 hits with 5 home runs. Alfonso Soriano hit his third of the spring in the 2nd inning that actually left the park. Micah Hoffpauir hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 of the Cubs 10 runs. Ronny Cedeno added a solo shot in the 6th.
The Cubs played from behind all afternoon after the Brewers scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning off of Cory Bailey. Hoffpauir's second home run of the day in the 7th tied the game. The Brewers scored an unearned run in the 10th to take the lead. The Cubs battled back to score a run in the bottom of the inning but Micah Hoffpauir grounded out to second with the bases loaded to end the game.

Throughout the journey we were privy to a swiftly moving array of sand, rocks, a few more rocks, and then a bit more sand. Apart from the odd (and distinctly lost looking) shrub here and there, it all seemed so completely void of life. In their rainshadow lie the deserts and dry grasslands of China and Mongolia. The stony Gobi Desert is further from the sea than any place on earth. Fierce summers are followed by bitter winters. Gobi means "stony". Strong winds have stripped the soil, leaving only stones, polished to a shine by the fierce heat. Dust storms are frequent occurences and can sometimes be seen from space.
