    Game 64 Recap--Pirates 5 Diamondbacks 3
    2008-06-09 14:43:00
Yes, the Pirates played again today. And...... ----Where to start with this one?Zach Duke was his usual reliable self--incredible turnaround, huh? 6 innings, 2 runs and a win to move to 4-4, and the ERA is at 4.10.---A Mark Reynolds home run that was overturned (into a double--fan interference--I didn't see the play since the game wasn't on TV) brought up early tension, and D-Backs manager Bob Melvin was ejected as he argued the call.----Later, Eye Chart called time in the middle of a Randy Joh

Diamondbacks (34-29) at Pirates (30-33)12:35--PNC Park, PittsburghRandy Johnson (4-2, 3.88) vs. Zach Duke (3-4, 4.19)[GameTrax]--------Another stupid 12:35 weekday start. These games are dumb. Nobody attends and people just seem to forget about them in general. Plus, they're never on TV.-----Randy Johnson, yeah yeah, 2nd-most all time strikeouts, he's pretty good, we get it. He's also old and not that great anymore, although his numbers this season are looking good. All right, he's 9-5 with a sub

    Game 63 Recap--Pirates 6 Diamondbacks 4
    2008-06-08 18:31:00
-------To be honest, I didn't really see any of this one beyond the top of the first. I'm piecing together from what I can gather using [this recap].----Phil was solid. He only went 5.2 but just gave up 2 runs and exited with a lead. The bullpen did some seriously nifty mixing and matching, giving up 2 runs but preserving the advantage. That includes....with his 14th save.------The offense came pretty much all in the 4th (5 runs). No real fireworks, just some singles and doubles nicely strung to

Diamondbacks (34-28) at Pirates (29-33)1:35--PNC Park, PittsburghDoug Davis (2-2, 3.90) vs. Phil Dumatrait (2-3, 3.47)[GameTrax]-----------Two game losing streak? Not to fear, our best three pitchers (aka the back end of our rotation) are on the way! Phil Dumatrait has been our best starter. Finally, people are starting to realize that. Even though Snell and Gorzo gave us decent outings, we should really be looking for a win with the...uh...ace on the mound.------Doug Davis has been a pretty aw

    Game 62 Recap--Pirates 3 Diamondbacks 4
    2008-06-07 21:23:00
It was hard to imagine the Pirates winning either of these past two games. They were going against some of the NL's top pitchers, and they were sending out two of the worst.---Still, this one is gonna sting a little.--Tom Gorzo: Same story as last start, pretty much. 1st inning--he couldn't get anybody out. Just looked plain awful. Couldn't throw strikes when he wanted to and when he did, they were pounded. 3-0 after a half frame, and it looked like a ballgame.BUTTom managed to salvage the start

Actually, his last outing was a little better: he gave up 4 runs in the first 3 innings but pitched 3 scoreless after that. Can he keep it up against a struggling D-Back offense?-----Dan Haren is an ace on pretty much any other team. Arizona got him this offseason, building an absolutely s

    Game 61 Recap--Pirates 1 Diamondbacks 3
    2008-06-06 22:28:00
A perplexing night for Ian Snell tonight. If you didn't see the game, his numbers look good-5 innings and 2 runs, with 9 K's. He was effective, but only when he put the ball over the plate. Ian was at 100 pitches in the 5th inning, and left the game partly due to that and pain from a line drive off his back in the 3rd (nothing serious).----The Bucs seemed to be in good shape off Webb in the first--Nate was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd, was bunted to 3rd........but didn't score. Brandon Webb built

Look at those numbers. He opened up the season with (I think) 8 or 9 straight wins. He's a good pitcher. He's also 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA against the Pirates?--Doesn't look good, huh? Well, tomorrow it's Dan Haren, and after Doug Davis on Sunday, Randy Johnson on Monday. Fun weekend for the Bucco offense!-

Cubs Try to Win One for Mom -- Cubs v. Diamondbacks - 1:20pm CDT
    2008-05-11 12:24:22
They can't even control themselves at the Mother's Day Brunch The Date: Mother's Day 2008. The Place: Wrigley Field. The Story: Z versus The Big Unit. The Big Unit returns to Wrigley for the first time since 2001.  He has back problems, so a rain delay might actually help this out (there's 90% chance of showers -- anyone who lives here will tell you that is actually 100%). The Cubs are trying for the sweep, hoping to finally win Mom's love.   Speaking of mothers, you can help sponsor Julie in the Avon breast cancer walk, which would be a great way for you to make up for all the bad things you do.  You know what I mean. Lineups coming.  Off to a Mother's Day Brunch. Happy Mother's Day.  Go Cubs.

Sean Gallagher is scheduled to take Z's place and the Diamondbacks will go with Edgar Gonzalez. Happy Mother's Day from everyone here at the CCO.... For those of you old enough to remember Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood from SNL, "Today's word boys and girls is 'big'". It is the 'Big Unit' versus 'Big Z' in a battle of a former ace and future Hall of Famer against a current ace in a big series finale. The Cubs and Diamondbacks have played two very close games, despite the final score on Saturday, and weather permitting, today's game should be more of the same. Lou Piniella's crew has a chance at a sweep against

B-REF PREVIEW | GAMEDAY | WEATHER | ACB CHAT ROOM Randy Johnson vs. Cubs hitters:  .194/.276/.262 in 103 at-bats Carlos Zambrano vs. Dbacks hitters:  .257/.308/.343 in 35 at-bats I’m writing this at 10:30 pm on Saturday night (won’t be around much, if at all, on Sunday) so the weather may change somewhat, but it’s going to rain.  There’s no question about that.  100% chance of rain.  Wind blowing in from RF at 25 mph with 40 mph gusts.  I don’t think they’ll get in the game in today, and if they do, it would be a good idea to rest Soriano since no good can come out of him playing on a soaked field.  I just hope the game doesn’t begin unless they’re relatively certain they have a large window.  I’d hate to lose Zambrano for a start because you pretty much know it’s not going to get played.  Might even be a good idea to have Gallagher make the start unless the Cubs are certain th

Game Thirty-Six: Cubs (20-15) vs. Diamondbacks (23-13) Game Time - 2:40pm C.T. Coverage - TV: FOX Saturday Game of the Week - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 183 Location - Wrigley Field, Chicago Ryan Dempster (4-1, 2.72/1.07) vs. Max Scherzer (0-1, 5.40/1.20) After winning the first game of a series for the first time since April 23rd, Lou Piniella's crew will try to take the second game against an impressive rookie. The Cubs will get their first look at Max Scherzer who turned a lot of heads in his big league debut out of the pen but struggled in his first start in the Majors. Ryan Dempster will try to pickup his 5th win of the year after getting tagged with an unearned loss his last time out. The Cubs played an impressive game on Friday against the best team in the National League....now it's time to put together back-to-back wins.

Coverage - TV: WGN - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 183 Location - Wrigley Field, Chicago Ted Lilly (2-4, 5.97/1.41) vs. Dan Haren (4-1, 3.12/0.99) Updated - 11:41am C.T. - Scott Eyre Activated - Sean Marshall Optioned to Triple-A The Cubs start their longest homestand of the year today with the first of three against the best team in the National League. After posting a 17-10 record in April, the Cubs have won only twice in seven games to start the new month. The last time the Diamondbacks were in Chicago they completed a 3-game sweep of Lou Piniella's crew that unceremoniously ended the 2007 campaign. While the Cubs have appeared flat and out of sync for the last two weeks, if they are not fired up for this weekend's series....Lou has more problems on his hands than anyone realizes. Piniella will send his top three pitchers to the mound this weekend and the Cubs' offense will face a test today in Da

    Game Thread: Diamondbacks at Cubs: 1:20 P.M. CT/2:20 P.M. ET:Sweep the Leg
    2008-05-09 11:00:00
The Cubs have lost seven of their last ten games and today play the Arizona Diamondbacks, the best team in the league. Last year, the Chicago Cubs were swept from the playoffs by these guys.  Today I say we start a little sweeping of our own. Sweep the Leg, Lilly The Pitchers The Cubs send Ted Lilly to the mound.  Since his last start, Ted Lilly (2-4, 5.97 ERA) has been using an advanced montage technique washing cars and trimming bonzai trees.  He is ready. I don't wish to alarm anyone, but Ted Lilly has really improved in his last three starts.  He has an ERA of 2.84 through those games, and 15 strikeouts and 7 walks in 19 innings.  That's more like the Ted Lilly we met and fell in love with last year, and I trust that is the Ted Lilly we will see today.  If anyone can turn this team around, it's Lilly. Ted Lilly is a Capricorn, and his horoscope is: A mob of torch-wielding villagers will soon gather outside your home, which is odd, as you don't rememb

Spring Training Game Thread: Cubs at Diamondbacks, 2:05 CST
    2008-03-05 12:00:00
The last time the Cubs and Diamondbacks squared off, it was not good. Arizona swept the Cubs right out of the playoffs, turning 162 games of hard work into three games of sucky baseball. Wrigley Field only got one game of playoff baseball, and it was not a good one. So just like that, the season was over, leaving Cubs fans empty and having to console each other with man-love. There, there, guy. It'll be OK. Now? Payback time, bitches, spring-training style. Carlos Zambrano (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to make his second Spring Training start. King Richard Hill (0-0, 4.50) is also slated to pitch. For the D-Backs, it's Juan Gutierrez (0-1, 27.00). Try to contain your excitement. I only has to pitch two innings again? Yesssssssssssssss. Finally, here's today's nugget of wisdom from award-winning Carrie Muskat: The three Cubs closer candidates each have pitched two innings, and it's still too early to pick who will win the job. Seriously, Carrie? I thought they would have figured it out af

Friday Game Thread; Diamondbacks at Cubs; 1:20 p.m. CT
    2007-07-20 17:50:09
With players getting hurt left and right and Derrek Lee still serving a suspension, the Cubs enter a three-game set with the Diamondbacks with a short bench and no time to heal these injuries, as the Brewers have shown they're not giving away the Central lead without a strong fight. Pitching for Arizona today is Brandon Webb, and um, he's kind of good. The reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner is one of the best in the majors, and double-digit strikeout games are more common than not for Webb. This season he's been so-so (including an average of four runs given up in his last three starts), and is 8-7 overall with a 3.42 ERA. Still the Cubs will have to fight tooth and nail if Webb is on his game today. For the Cubs, it's Jason Marquis, who could use a good outing. So far, he hasn't shown anything to refute the notion about his yearly second-half implosion. In his last outing, he gave up six runs for the second straight start, but managed to get off the hook thanks to the good wa

    Perfection, Thy Name is Diamondbacks
    2007-07-18 22:01:00
The normally reliable Dayn Perry has betrayed our trust with his latest offering, a FOX Sports article which fails to fulfill its stated goal. The article promises to tell us what every contending team needs at the deadline, but instead, only delivers the goods for 11 out of the 16 contenders.Dayn didn't simply forget to cover 5 teams. Instead, he asserted that 5 teams simply don't need anything. That's right. They are perfect. Who are these lucky teams, you wonder? None other than the Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and Brewers. So rejoice, fans of these teams; you were just imagining those nagging little (or not-so-little) problems that you thought existed on your hometown nine (or twenty-five). Your team is so good that it cannot improve in any way. This is the case, despite the fact that two of the teams (Diamondbacks and Cubs) are not even sniffing 1st place in their own division; the Dodgers have a 1-game lead. The Diamondbacks are 49-46, and they haven't even been unluc
