Monday Off-Base Diary: The Magical World of Wrigley Edition
    2008-06-23 11:52:48
Anyone else getting the feeling that this team may be better than we thought? As most of you probably know, the counterculture lost a giant yesterday: SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. Some People Are Stupid. Stuff. People I Can Do Without. George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language. The counterculture hero's jokes also targeted things such as misplaced shame, religious hypocrisy and linguistic quirks - why, he asked, do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? In the end, though, nobody took death less seriously than George: Catch you in the next life, buddy. In Macedonia, a writer gets the inside scoop on a serial killer. Yet Another Week From Hell Diary Entry
    2008-06-18 13:25:00
Today I ripped someone’s guts out and shat upon them as they sat festering in the scorching noonday’s sun. I took someone’s concept of reality and shattered it into a thousand pieces and then spread those pieces out around the globe knowing they will never find them all again. Today I looked a man in the eyes and told him that he was no longer a part of the company of which we both once worked. This was my first firing ever and it felt worse than I ever imagined anything could. I mean to see a grown man cry and beg for his life and there being nothing you can do other than try some half-assed pathetic and slightly transparent attempt to empathize with this man is impossible. How can I honestly empathize with him when, come tomorrow, I will still be employed and he will not be? How can I honestly empathize with someone who is about to get their last pay check with no prospects on the horizon? The answer is I can’t, but there I was, going through the motions, pretend

Monday Off-Base Diary: We Need The Extra Day To Clean Up Edition
    2008-06-09 12:30:00
If you live in the greater Chicagoland area (and by "greater Chicagoland," I mean "the Midwest"), you saw a lot of this kind of thing this weekend. You think a research base in the South Pole is boring? Think again: WELLINGTON, New Zealand - One of the last shipments to a U.S. research base in Antarctica before the onset of winter darkness was a year's supply of condoms, a New Zealand newspaper reported Monday. Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them. The base only has a skeleton staff through the long winter. 16,500 for a "skeleton staff?" Damn. I guess this explains why Mark wasn't at the chat on Friday night: LEBANON, Pa. - Rescue crews had to cut apart a portable toilet to rescue a man who got stuck naked inside the potty. Authorities say the 31-year-old man used his cell phone to

Last week there were signs of a return to Dollar weakness, but the dip in crude oil prices has given a tentative bid to the greenback. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but Thatcher had more balls than any of her successors. And this latest bunch of ‘Britain’s got no talent’ try to make a virtue out of U-turns, saying that they’re always ready to listen. For starters that’s not government it’s appeasement. Monday Off-Base Diary: Killing Time Until First Pitch Edition

Six hours and 19 minutes until gametime? Bleh. If you're one of the millions of geeky Americans riveted by the search for a "goldilocks planet," which would be not too hot, not too cold, but covered in water in juuuusssst right, we have a new contender: ST. LOUIS - There's a new extrasolar planet on the block: a mini-orb likely covered with a deep ocean. And it takes the record for the lowest-mass exoplanet to orbit a normal star, astrophysicists announced Monday. The li'l planet - weighing in at three times Earth's mass ?- grabs the lightweight title from a five-Earth-mass planet just announced in April. The super-Earth is called MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb, after its host star MOA-2007-BLG-192L, which is located about 3,000 light-years from Earth. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 5.88 trillion miles - 9.46 trillion kilometers.) The astrophysicists suggest the tiny planet supports a thick atmosphere, which along with possible interior heating by radioactiv

Wednesday Off-Base Diary: I'm Too Tired and Distracted to Work Edition
    2008-05-28 11:49:35
Ever have one of those days (like I'm having today) where you just feel too tired, lazy, and generally unmotivated to do anything? Well here's someone to make you feel even worse. KATMANDU, Nepal - An American climber has scaled Mount Everest for the 10th time, becoming the first non-Nepalese to achieve the feat, mountaineering officials said Wednesday. David Hahn, 46, of Taos, New Mexico, reached the 29,035-foot summit Tuesday along with fellow American climber Nicole Messner and two Sherpa guides, Tourism Ministry official Ramesh Chetri said. I don't think it should count if you use Sherpa guides. They probably just dragged him up the Murderhorne by his feet. It seems poor Owen Wilson is attempting to drown his sorrows in a giant cocktail of booze and Kate Hudson look-a-likes: As Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong canoodle their way through Cannes and Monaco, Hudson's ex, Owen Wilson, is left to drown his sorrows in the company of Hudson lookalikes, according to reports from OK! magaz

Analisis y Critica: Diario de los Muertos (GEORGE ROMERO'S DIARY OF THE DEAD)
    2008-05-21 00:00:00

    2008-05-20 14:20:00
Dear Diary, What a few weeks! OMG, I’m totally having a hard (hee hee) time getting acclimated to my new team. So many new handsome faces… Carlos Zambrano is such a cutie. I thought he’d be mad at me when I came (hee hee) here, but he’s been sweet. The other hard thing (hee hee) about the move is that I’m having a hard (hee hee) time feeling out (hee hee) which of my new teammates are my kind of people. Here’s a picture of me trying to get Jason Marquis to look at my sweet ass (I’ve never seen an uncircumsized thing), but he wouldn’t bite :( Anyway, back to all things sticks and balls I love you, Jimmy

Love Mysterious Thing Will I Ever Find True Love My Inner Thoughts of Diary Words of the Heart

The older I get I am wondering if I will ever have that love that drives me wild in my heart, mind, body and soul. I think I have been in love few times so far in my life I would call that puppy love more than a true love. To find that one love that makes me want to be with them forever and want them always in my heart. A person I would actually love forever and each day. Why does a person meet certain people and not others in life. Love and life is never easy. But maybe it is not meant to be

Off-Base Diary: Rainy Days And Mondays Always Get Me Down Edition
    2008-04-28 13:04:41
Actually, I usually love rainy days. But rainy off-days are a different story. For all you Jessica Simpson fans out there, I hope you learn to love her dad as much as you love her, because he ain't going nowhere: Though Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo seem like the picture-perfect couple, OK! magazine reports that Jess's dad-cum-manager-cum-media mouthpiece, Joe, is a problem-causing paternal third wheel in the relationship. Case in point, an insider told OK! that the much-publicized Mexican excursion Jess and Tony enjoyed in January was never meant to include all the media hubbub. "Everybody agreed to tell no one about the trip," the source said. "On the day they were flying out, who shows up? Joe Simpson. Tony and the other guys thought it was weird." Tony and his Dallas Cowboy teammates, who were also part of the festivities, now believe that Joe was the paparazzi informant, according to the source. What kind of girl doesn't tell her dad to get lost so she can have some time alone

Ewwww. Looks like Dave Matthews is back in town Top o' the mornin' to ya! (have you guys seen that commericial where the guy is trying to leave a message for "Heather" and he goes "Heather, top of the morning to ya!"? Hee.) It's been a while since we've had a good OBD around here. And, with today being an off-day and all, I figured this was as good a day as any to jump back on the OBD horse. Since most of the judge and lawyers were already sloshed by the time I got to court this morning (in retrospect, the tent with green beer and corned beef right outside the court house probably wasn't such a good idea), I've had all morning to scour the internet for your viewing pleasure. Geldof and Bush: Diary From the Road
    2008-02-29 13:02:00
It was Bush who initiated the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) with cross-party support led by Senators John Kerry and Bill Frist. In 2003, only 50,000 Africans were on HIV antiretroviral drugs — and they had to pay for their own medicine. Today, 1.3 million are receiving medicines free of charge. The U.S. also contributes one-third of the money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria — which treats another 1.5 million. It contributes 50% of all food aid (though some critics find the mechanism of contribution controversial). On a seven-day trip through Africa, Bush announced a fantastic new $350 million fund for other neglected tropical diseases that can be easily eradicated; a program to distribute 5.2 million mosquito nets to Tanzanian kids; and contracts worth around $1.2 billion in Tanzania and Ghana from the Millennium Challenge Account, another initiative of the Bush Administration. So why doesn't America know about this? Companion Diary
    2008-02-25 13:45:01
What the Companion learnt last week...As the world's media hears of the divorce wrangling between Heather Mills and Macca, comes the tail that Mills used to work at Freddie Gray's Fair on Clapham Common, where she claims she made tea for 30p pocket money. Another sob and sympathy story or a heart-commended statement to back her charity work up?***A Jobcentre near Clapham Common is advertising for a £10ph "webcam performer" to act out customers' fantasies by talking dirty and stripping off. The clincher is that the suitable applicant could claim topped-up tax credits on that what they earn, while hours are flexible and between 15 and 40 hours a week.***Stan Chadwick, 48, was spotted by casting agents for the butchers scene in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, while working in his brother's shop in Balham High Road. A few snippets from the review: “There you have it. Just add media, mix, and save. Three easy steps to perfect media mixes. What’s that? Diary from Hajj Retreat | how does it feels to step into a sufi spiritual group?
    2008-01-04 01:18:33
. the pilgrimage .Following some interesting "synchronicities" (on 18 dec 2007) when i finally found myself sitting at the car heading for the hajj retreat at Shadhiliyya Sufi Center in the heart of Napa Valley and spiraling our way to the hill top (where the sufi center is), everything including the narrow paths on the valley, the nature and the land was pregnant with symbolism of a pilgrimage. Interestingly it was the Hajj Retreat coinciding with Eid and Hajj is the sacred pilgrimage. The sister with me, who has been to the firm before already declared her feelings while we were entering the Napa Valley. "It feels coming back to home"; she was feeling her homecoming as she has also been attracted to be in the presence of the teacher. And when we reached Shadhiliyya land at the evening twilight, we saw our beloved teacher sitting there in his familiar appearance. It was such a blessing to see him again, to be near him.. meeting pure hearts .When i first saw the people from Shadhiliyya group at Del Mar, San Diego i was amazed and touched by the sheer purity of the hearts. Almost all of them are born americans and their sincere quest for truth led them to the path which is truly amazing to observe. The reason i particularly make note of born american is because its not easy to transcend the barriers, stereotypes, social and set religious-cultural barriers. This alone speak a lot about their level of sincerity as a seeker which touch me always. Shadhiliyya is not a easy going, new age kind of path. It is very much rooted to islamic tradition and sharia (islamic sacred laws) which makes coming and being in the path more special and challenging for people who are from different faith and cultural background. Their sincere diligence when it comes to learning arabic, saying prayer on appointed times, doing zikr and salawat are something which would even make our beloved Prophet so joyous. All praise belongs to the One Who pulls with the call of love towards Him.Being someo

To me, you guys are perfect We here at LOHO have been called some ugly, ugly names of late. "Retards." "Dorks." "Tools." "Morans." "Idiots." Why certain regard us with such rage is a mystery. Perhaps they are lonely. Perhaps they are jealous. Perhaps their heart is three sizes too small. Whatever the reason, I want you to know, darling readers, that I adore each and every one of you unconditionally (except for Matt---there are several conditions there). Belle de Jour - Secret Diary Of A Call Girl III
    2007-12-15 10:30:45
The English Courtesan was irritated by an article in The Guardian this week about Belle de Jour - Secret Diary Of A Call Girl. The readers may recall that the English Courtesan previously wrote about Belle de Jour – Secret Diary Of A Call Girl here and here. Those readers who missed it on TV can catch up on the whole of the Belle de Jour series and see Billie Piper in her smalls here. The English Courtesan is not suggesting for one moment that the good readers would be swayed by a lady in lingerie, but she hopes they'll watch it in the name of art.Anyway, the English Courtesan was delighted to hear the news this week that there’s going to be a second series of Belle de Jour –The Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, but she was disappointed by the predictable media response. Why is it that the British media persist in seeing all escorts, call girls, courtesans or whatever you like to call us, as crack whores who are enslaved to both the patriarchy and their own addictions?Several things irritated the English Courtesan about The Guardian article, which took the form of an interview with a 50 something year old escort, charging £130 an hour for her services. To understand the context, the readers might also like to see the previous article on Belle de Jour – Secret Diary Of A Call Girl in The Guardian here, where assorted members of the great and the good expounded on theories that most escorts have drink and drug problems and are subjected to frequent acts of violence from their clients. The underlying argument of this first article was that Belle de Jour – The Secret Diary Of A Call Girl is therefore ‘not true’. Funny then that The Guardian awarded Belle de Jour’s blog their best weblog award just a few years ago.Needless to say, for the second article, The Guardian managed to find a woman to interview who fitted all their stereotypes. ‘Karen’ has a history of drink problems and unhappy relationships with men. ‘Ah yes’ said the sociologist and the p

A Page from my Diary: We Have Moved
    2007-12-04 09:15:02
I finally moved houses. Well, to be honest, I moved a week ago, but with the job and unpacking, I finally found time today to take pictures of the new house. Have a look:This house is much bigger than the previous one, and therefore, colder. The bedroom especially is really big. Dark blue carpeted flooring, with light blue walls. I bought a dressing table, a tv trolley, a bedside table and a lamp for the room. The living room is spacious, and with light pink and white colored walls and wallpaper, and the laminate flooring, looks welcoming. I know, light pink sounds a bit strange, but that's how the landlord's wife has decorated it, and to be honest, it gives a nice effect. The sofas are really comfy, and suck you in. The kitchen is almost the same size as the previous one. The good thing is that there is a gas cooker in the house has a great effect on cooking. There is a lot of difference in the taste of the food cooked on an electric cooker than that cooked on the gas cooker. Stran

Friday Off-Base Diary: Stupid Trade Ideas Edition
    2007-11-30 15:15:41
Hey you guys! I have an AWESOME trade idea! I heard that the Twins might trade Johan Santana! I was thinking that maybe we could offer them Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno and see if they bite. Heck, if we throw in Ryan Dempster and Eric Patterson, we might even get Joe Nathan! What do you think?* (*As seen on other blogs) This is going to be an abbreviated edition of the OBD, because it's not only the world of baseball with little to talk about right now, it's the world in general. Unless you want to talk about Stacy Peterson or the bomber in Hilary's New Hampshire Office. I don't. So here we go. The Heckler has additional news on the big Kerry Wood signing: Wood returns to Cubs, will begin Red Sox career next season The Cubs signed Kerry Wood to a one-year contract today, delaying by one season the reliever's plans to join the Boston Red Sox, where he'll be a key contributor in the team's continued dynasty and the first middle reliever to ever win three straight Cy Young Awards.

Monday Off-Base Diary: My Kingdom For Some Baseball News Edition
    2007-11-19 13:07:38
I am rather exhuasted because TCM decided to start showing "Casablanca" at 11:00 pm last night. As is my policy, I had to watch it through to the end, as I always hope Rick will be a man and get on the damn plane. At any rate, I'm tired, so apologies in advance if this OBD is not all it could be. First up, science confirms what those of us without a Y chomosome have suspected for centuries: The secret to why male organisms evolve faster than their female counterparts comes down to this: Males are simple creatures. In nearly all species, males seem to ramp up glitzier garbs, more graceful dance moves and more melodic warbles in a never-ending vie to woo the best mates. Called sexual selection, the result is typically a showy male and a plain-Jane female. Evolution speeds along in the males compared to females.   "It's because males are simpler," said lead author Marta Wayne, a zoologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville. "The mode of inheritance in males involves simp

    Dear Web Diary!
    2007-11-14 01:17:00
Blogging is hot and getting hotter, with more and more web logs (blogs) cropping up online by the day!Since being documented nearly a full decade ago, blogs and associated software have emerged, giving rise to this lucrative and dynamic market.Blogs are highly interactive. Publishers get to review results almost as soon as the post is made and do not have the usual moderation that appears in forums, ezines nor newsletters where they can be terminated without warning. In addition, there is usually more editorial freedom associated with blogs and the topic or content often overlooked. They are easy to start and maintain, so even the novice will find blogging quick and easy to do. Blogs are extremely search engine friendly since content is constantly being updated. And, blogs are fun! The entertainment (self or site visitor) cannot be dismissed and with discussions so often heating up, visitors tend to return time and time again to the same site to view the newer posts on any given topic.Blogs also are capable of syndication: a great means of ensuring that your writing and opinions are exposed to as much of the general public as possible. With blogging, there are NO lists to keep nor spam filters to stress over, which is a paramount reason many writers and publishers have turned to this fascinating form of promotion. As such, they are economical with no list server costs. To be successful, however, treat “your” blog as an ezine, forum or newsletter. Your content must be informative and compelling and updated constantly. The site should be visually appealing and user friendly. Some blogging services charge others to read or to write, so there is definitely some income potential associated with this proven communication method.

Blogging: Todays Internet Diary and Marketing Tool
    2007-11-14 01:16:00
The popular blogger.com owned by Google, Inc. has been around the internet for a while. But still no matter how appealing a Blog may seem now a days there are still a few people that does not actually get to know what really a Blog is.Well, a Blog is a type of website that allows you as its owner to easily put in your messages and publish it online. It’s more like a journal or a diary type of site, but what’s interesting is it’s not hidden from others like a normal diary where in only you can write and see it.A Blog is your personal site and your online diary at the same time. It is a place where you post something and other may post a comment about your post. It’s actually a great site to publish your own opinion and “what you think”? thingy. Now, with all those features how come it’s also a marketing tool? For some it may seem to be a diary or a journal but for some it is more likely to be a place to advertise products and market them. Why? Because of the ability of Blogs to be crawled easily by search engines and because of the nature of a Blog that makes it look like an e-campus class that consist of a teacher and students. Advertisers, marketers and even programmers can make use of a Blog to post in messages about their products and users could post in their comments too.A Blog is easily crawled by search engines because it is a content based site and search engines loves sites with great content volumes. I have a Blog my self at http://prialde.blog.com and with in 24 hours I can already search my Blog at Google Search.A Blog is a great tool indeed. The answer now to the question, “Do I Really Need It??” is up to you to answer. Just remember no site is great without others knowing it.Here are some of the Blogs I love to spend some time on.http://prialde.blog.comhttp://www.elf-ideas.blogspot.com/http://ezinearticles.com/blog/And here are some of the sites offering free Blogs.http://www.blog.com/http://www.blogger.com/http://www.blog-city.com/http:/

Sepultura - Tour Diary By Derrick Green
    2007-10-28 17:46:42
I awoke very early at least for me 9:00 am and descended downstairs for breakfast. I was hungry and I was looking forward to having something typical for an Indian breakfast. I proceeded experimenting with various spicy dishes and continued going back for more, it was all extremely delicious.I was anxious to see New Delhi and only a few people who were up and ready to go. I called Jean because I know that he mentioned the day before that he wanted to go anywhere at anytime. Caio or lighting engineer and his brother Albert who is filming our entire trip in India were also ready to go so we set out to place called, "Qutub Minar".The Qutub Minar is located in a small village called Mehrauli in South delhi It was built by Qutub-ud-din Aybak of the Slave Dynasty, who took possession of Delhi in 1206. The Qutub Minar is also significant for what it represents in the history of Indian culture. It was the first monument built by a Muslim ruler in India. It was the beginning of a new style of art and architecture that came to be known as the Indo-Islamic style.Read the complete blog entry here

Travel Diary: Loving the Loire Valley
    2007-10-24 12:01:00
A quick test and I am happy to discover that I am indeed still quite adept at riding a bicycle that is not stationary. In fact, I am an old pro on this mode of transport – a veritable Lance Armstrong, if you will (alright I’m not in competition shape, but I can sit on a bike just as well as any Tour de France champion). In any case, I take to the biking trails (Loire à Vélo) along the Loire with fervor. I soon discover that this is a fab way of experiencing the majesty of the Loire as well as taking in a bit of the green beyond green French countryside. Running some 400 kilometers, the Loire à Vélo (www.loireavelo.fr) is part of a network of trails designed by the EU that will eventually run from the Atlantic Ocean in France to Budapest. For cycling enthusiasts, this is an itinerary must-do.

    The ARod Diary
    2007-10-09 19:00:00
"One of the reasons I came here was to help this team win a world championship," Rodriguez said. "I have failed at that. Without a championship, everything else is just numbers." What would a Cubs' offseason be without at least one blog diary rife with rampant, unfounded speculation? I've been hearing a lot of off-hand comments around here lately about how great this lineup would look with ARod in it (Proggy, Abe, Diggity). I know there is much hope that he'll flip NYC the collective finger and run sobbing back into the arms of his "surrogate father," our own Sweet Lou. So it's time to put your . . . words. . . where your mouth is. Where do YOU think ARod will wind up? Oh really? Brave enough to go on the record, are you? I personally think he's going to opt out and be re-signed by the Yankees. They're the only ones with that kind of money. Then again, I said the same thing about Soriano, so what do I know? Do I like ARod? No. I think he's a phony and a headcase and that his entire image is carefully constructed artifice. Would I like to see him in between DLee and Ramirez? No doubt. I'd even offer to pay for the therapist that we will undoubtedly have to have on staff 24/7 to deal with his emotional fragility. What say you, peanut gallery?

    Off-Day Off-Base Diary: Oktoberfest Edition
    2007-09-20 19:14:50
Beer lovers, this one's for you: A whole lot of hot beer - as in stolen suds - is missing after two tractor trailers filled with brew were taken early this morning from a Mississauga loading yard. Peel Police said more than 100,000 bottles and cans of beer were stolen in an early morning break-in at about 3:55 a.m. Unknown suspects entered the fenced in trailer yard at 5455 Dixie Rd. near Highway 401, police said. Using two stolen transport trucks, the suspects proceeded to steal two trailers, one containing more than 69,000 bottles of Moosehead beer, the other containing over 44,000 bottles of Moosehead, James Ready Honey Lager and Carlsberg brands of beer. Police said thieves then drove the trucks out of the complex without being challenged by security. I, for one, would like to know the whereabouts of Faith, cubsfan2883, and secdelahc at the time in question. If you want to do Oktoberfest right, you have to show up dressed to the neins (get it? 2007-09-12 20:30:34
Look -- he's happy, and he never even made it to the World Series. Yes, the Cubs lost last night, despite being up three runs.  Yes, Houston (save for Cub-killin' Carlos Lee) is the kind of team that Carl, thisyearcub, my six-year-old, and I could compete with in a King and His Court-style 4-man team.  I, however, refuse to ride a rollercoaster with every game; my job today is to try to help you be happy (despite the fact that the US is evidently near the bottom of the list of countries ranked by happiness -- it appears an inordinate amount of Cubs fans took the survey).  MTV is happy -- its ratings went up, because of (rather than despite of) the much-reviled Britney Spears catatonic-stripper-who-forgot-the-words-to-her-own-freakin'-song-that-she-was-only-lipsycing-anyway performance.  Oddly, it seems that people like to watch televised self-destruction. Tuesday Off-Base Diary: Back on Top (Kinda) Edition
    2007-09-11 19:43:56
For some reason, it's hard to find goofy, offbeat stories on September 11. Go figure. However, the Cubs are back in first, so the show must go on. Also, I would like to add that it was 57 degrees in my house when I woke up this morning, and I LOVED it. I love fall. We start today with our pals over at the Heckler, who continue to probe the inner reaches of the mind of the Delicate Genius In another show of the unconventional thinking that has made him famous, Tony La Russa batted pitcher Adam Wainwright fourth against the Diamondbacks, forcing centerfielder Jim Edmonds to the nine spot. While the Cardinals lost, La Russa said he plans to do it again. "Heck, Jim got better looks in the nine hole," said La Russa. "Next game, I might even bat the pitcher at leadoff and another one in the cleanup position playing right field." According to La Russa, batting pitchers in positions traditionally reserved for position players actually gives other batters more time at the plate. His explanat

Diary of a Real Estate Rookie by Alison Rogers
    2007-09-01 16:42:00
Diary of a Real Estate Rookie is essential reading for the neophyte real estate investor, and for anyone who listens with envy to cocktail-party stories that always climax with "huge capital gains." Unlike most popular authors in this field, Rogers refuses to present real estate as an easy path to riches. That's refreshing. If you want to read about how easy it is to be a landlord or to flip property, try Robert Kyosaki. Rogers always reminds the reader that the real estate life doles out a daily dose of work and risk. She's also great with the absurd anecdote. She describes a Manhattan penthouse sale where a high-end broker, "offering the apartment for $3.99 million had not managed to take away the show sheets left by [another broker] who had offered the unit just a few months earlier at $2.77 million. Just yesterday, I was in a model unit priced at $2.3 million, where, I swear to heaven, I could have done a better job installing the floors with a staple gun."

Monday Off-Base Diary: Bad Day At Work Edition
    2007-07-23 23:24:45
It's not easy coming back to work after a long vacation, kids. It's even less facile when you get in trouble immediately upon setting foot in the door for things that happened while you were out. So,in the spirit of reminding us all that life is not that bad, LOHO is proud to bring you, once again, "People Who Are Having A Worse Day Than You." We begin with this guy: Sunday's wet afternoon turned tragic when lightning struck and killed a scuba diver who was surfacing in the ocean off Hillsboro Inlet. His death was one of several incidents in Broward and Miami-Dade counties linked to the heavy rain and thunderstorms that engulfed the area. The bolt struck the 36-year-old diver about 3:30 p.m. as he was surfacing from 30 feet beneath the boat he was on with friends and fellow divers. Dude. There is only one way you should die in the water: shark attack. Anything else and you run the risk of winding up on News of the Weird and being nominated for a Darwin Award. And being mentioned in

Aaaah, baseball. America's pastime. As American as mom, apple pie, and wearing shirts with obscenities written on them while squiring your two-year old around town: NEW YORK - The wife of Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez wore a white tank top with foul language on the back when she attended a game against the Oakland Athletics. A common two-word obscenity ending with “you” was clearly visible when Cynthia Rodriguez, her 2-year-old daughter and an unidentified older woman took their seats Sunday in the players’ family section at Yankee Stadium. A front-page photograph Monday in the New York Post shows the back of the tank top with the obscenity printed in Old English lettering between the shoulder blades. The first letter of the first word is visible; the three other letters are intentionally blurred. The second word is ‘You.’ The paper’s headline read: “F-Rod." Klassy with a capital "K." How do they know that shirt was directed at A-Rod, anyway? It could have been directe

Diary of a Guinea Pig Part II
    2007-06-30 06:44:00
Today is day two of “The Great Pill to Quit Smoking Experiment 2007” and I am still alive. No flipper babies or strange voices in my head or anything; well, not new strange voices. Herbie is still there with Mauve and Phyllis. I am not sure where Eugene wandered off to, but I am sure he will return eventually. He always does. Today I took half my usual Prozac does to go with the “Great Pill to Quit Smoking” and my spaciness did slightly diminish, but not entirely. I think that means it is the new pill doing it to me and I just need to ride it out. If it continues on Sunday I am going to quit the pill, but not my quest to quit smoking. On the quitting front I think the pill is working. Cigarettes taste different today. They leave a nasty “school milk” aftertaste in my mouth. I really can't stand to finish them, but soon want one because my nicotine craving was not yet satisfied. This means more cigs lit while less smoked. I suppose each day I will light less unti

Lots of interesting stuff at the Deviant Art community…and here is one: The artist, hojax, wrote: I named it ‘dear diary’ because it mostly focuses on Harems and how women in them have to put up with being sex slaves. i wanted to rip up the mattress and write a sort of confessional diary under the surface to portray how the women keep their pain inside and the black ink parts on the surface around the swirled hot glue represent sin and darkness taking over the souls of the women. its a travesty, but these women feel like its their duty to please their husbands. The artist did this using a baby mattress as a canvass. Pretty powerful form of expression, isn’t it? Monday Off-Base Diary: Off-Day Edition
    2007-06-18 20:41:06
It's hot hot HOT here in Chi-tonw today. We're up into the mid-90s with big-time humidity and, frankly, we all look like we just stepped out of a dryer set on "permanent press." Also, redheads are glorious, wondrous creatures and should be treated as such. We begin today with good news and bad news. The good news? We've found a drug company that actually plans to be honest and upfront about the side effects of its latest diet drug. The bad news? You may need to buy more pants: GlaxoSmithKline has a tip for people who decide to try Alli, the over-the-counter weight-loss drug it is launching with a multimillion-dollar advertising blitz—keep an extra pair of pants handy. That's because Alli, a lower-dose version of the prescription drug Xenical, could (cue the late-night talk-show hosts) make you soil your pants. But while Alli's most troublesome side effect, anal leakage, is sure to be good for a few laughs, millions of people who are desperate to take off weight may still decid

Wednesday Off-Base Diary: If Only Edition
    2007-06-13 18:53:20
In life, there are things that are not true, things that are true, things that are not true that you wish were, and things that are true that you wish were not. Then there are the known knowns, and the times when you don't know what you know, and the times that you go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had. Or something like that. With that in mind, today's OBD pays tribute to things that were wish were (and weren't) true. We begin today with our good friends at The Heckler, who have the latest on Kerry Wood's most recent attempt at rehabilitation: To help bolster the Cubs depleted bullpen, the new Cubs strength and conditioning coach, 11-year-old Jeremy Franklin, has put Kerry Wood on a revolutionary rehab schedule centered around the Nintendo Wii game console. For the next four to six weeks, Wood is expected to spend at least four hours a day playing Wii Sports, moving the Wii remote in a realistic throwing motion to build up his endurance and arm strength

    Diary of a decongestant fiend
    2007-06-11 13:27:25
I am a drug addict. At night I lie in bed, too hot to sleep. My head pounds, my clammy skin itches and burns. I can't breathe. If I sleep my first thought when I wake is of nothing else but reaching for my drugs - the idea of going another minute without them too terrifying to consider. One pill popped and I know it will make me better. I think it will make me better. I hope it will make me better. I know, deep down, that it makes no difference at all. So my eyes go a little less red. So my mind clears long enough for me to remember where the bathroom is or that human society requires people to answer their front door clothed. The symptoms always come back in an hour or so, just when you think they've gone away. Just when you think you've had your last sneeze. This is the curse of the summer, and I am finally becoming a vampire. I am allergic to the outside world. There are two types of people in this world - people who get hayfever, and people who wonder what people with hayfeve

Yes, I know that this says 2006. Hey, I couldn't find a '07 logo on such short notice. Well, I think the first little nugget of info should be mentioned right here, courtesy of SI's great yet underappreciated baseball writer Jon Heyman: With the Cubs ownership situation in limbo, the Cubs have been instructed by MLB to adhere strictly to the slot system, with no well-over slot bonuses, and certainly no big league deal. And guess who's gonna want a big-league deal? That's right, the one guy who the Cubs need to take: Matt Wieters. Blame Scott Boras and his Antichrist ways. Because of guy on the left, Cubs probably won't be seeing guy on the right So who will the Cubs be taking? Well, another great prospect the Cubs could desperately use, pitcher Rick Porcello, is, yep, you guessed it, another Boras client. Take him off the books. Really, with all these restrictions, it could be anyone. SI.com is predicting the Cubs will take Jarrod Parker, a RHP out of Norwell High in Indiana

Off-Day Off-Base Diary: It Could Be Worse Edition
    2007-05-31 07:30:00
Yes, it's true. This team is bad at baseball. But, believe it or don't, while we were all wallowing in our fish-induced misery lo the past few nights, there were some people who actually had worse nights than we did. As a public service/suicide prevention message to this board, I now give you. . . . People Who Have Had a Worse Two Days Than You. We begin with America's sweetheart/lap dancer, Britney Spears. When we last left Brit, she was lecturing us about. . . something or other, saying "I am going to make mistakes everyday, and I am sure every mistake I make will probably be on CNN or `Good Morning America." And it turns out that Brit is smarter than she looks, because she was right. The "Toxic" singer was reportedly spotted being carried out of a men’s room where she had been sick, her makeup smeared and wig askew, according to the London Sun. Spears had been spending time with some friends at the Sky Bar in L.A.’s Mondrian Hotel. “She had a room booked at the hotel

We might as well start with the big one. Life sucks for you today if you are Mrs. ARod. Why, you ask? It's because your very famous and wealthy though emotionally vulnerable husband was photographed going into his hotel with a woman who is not you: New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez was seen with a curvaceous blonde in Toronto having dinner at an expensive restaurant, a fancy strip club and then his hotel on Sunday night, the New York Post reported Wednesday. The newspaper — with the headline "Stray-Rod" — said that A-Rod's wife Cynthia Rodriguez, mother of their 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Natasha, was not spotted Sunday night, one day before the Yankees lost 7-2 to the Blue Jays. When asked by the Post about his evening with the mystery woman, A-Rod's reply was "no comment." Aaahhh, smooth move, Ex-Lax. Pulling the old "no comment." That oughta shut them up. All you American Idol lovers might want to sit down for this one. It has now come to light that this year's I

There are plenty of things to complain about in my life. There are never enough hours in the day for everything I have to do, I make a living listening to people cry on my shoulder about their crappy marriages, I have fabulous taste and, as a result, am always immediately drawn to the most expensive item in a store, my baseball team sucks at life. But at least I never stripped for a final exam and GOT A "B!"  We begin today with our old friends at The Onion, who, as noted by carl and faith, have been en fuego as of late: A.J. Burnett Blames Poor Outing On Stupid Good Hitters May 3, 2007 | | Onion Sports CLEVELAND—After giving up seven earned runs over just five innings against the Indians Tuesday, Blue Jays starter A.J. Burnett told reporters that his ineffectiveness on the mound could be attributed to "the stupid good hitters on the other team who kept hitting all my pitches." "Stupid good hitters, always hitting home runs," said Burnett, responding to a question about hi

    Diary of a Beer Drinker
    2007-05-15 21:54:14
Its funny what you can find on the Internet when you just don’t feel like being productive. For instance, I Googled “Beer Drinking” today and came up with John Paul Adams’ personal beer records. This guy is great. I wouldn’t call him the best beer drinker I’ve seen, but judging by his picture, you wouldn’t expect it. Anyway, he’s been keeping tally of his consumed beers since 1988. Not only does he have a list of different types he’s drank, but he’s got monthly tallies of total consumption. It appears that JPA’s alcoholism has really picked up since ‘88. Back in the day he was only taking down about 40 a month. But in December of ‘02 he set a personal best of 162.5 beers. That’s an average of 5 a night, or if you’re the type that only drinks when going out, a nightly average of nearly 14 beers if you drank every Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I tip my hat to you John Paul. In a true Tastybo

    Trivandrum Diary
    2007-05-15 01:50:00
I am smitten. This is my second visit to this exquisite locale, but the magical feeling which engulfs me when the aircraft starts hovering over Kerala still remains. This is truly God's Own Country. And it is Trivandrum, the capital is where I pay my obeisance to. For me, it is a haven, a place which has become so much a part of me in just two visits.Green queenFour and a half hours in the plane is pretty tiring. So, by the time you are told that the flight is preparing for arrival to the Trivandrum airport, all you want to do is get up and run. But hold on. It was just then that I happened to look down from my window. A poet would have found his muse from the sight which greeted me when I looked out. I was here, little below the clouds and in front of my eyes was this vast green blanket, engulfing a huge territory. Soft, fresh and welcoming, the lush green layer seemed to call me and I was mentally responding to it. And there was the ocean. From the distance, only a sheet of blue could be seen perfectly complimenting the green blanket. It was nature at its best. Something I thought we could see only on the Discovery or National Geographic channel. The best part is that the magic doesn't fade even when the flight is about to hit the ground. True, the marks of civilisation are seen all over, but everything is in the lap of nature. So, all along the strip of land, you can spot trees, plants and water. Wow ... this is a real confluence of nature. This is my second visit and I'm sure I'll feel equally enamoured the third time too.Homecoming Be it talking or writing, I tend to get carried away at the mention of Trivandrum. I apologise. Some introduction is required - Thiruvananthapuram, as it is now called is my sasural (husband's home). Well, I never knew all my talks with my mother about visiting Kerala once would be heard by someone up there and come true so soon... But they did and I visited Kerala not as a tourist but as a coy bride for the first time.Funny, it

    A page from Mary’s diary
    2007-04-30 13:53:00
When I lived in Rio de Janeiro last year I didn’t have much Portuguese. Here are some accounts of how that impacted my daily life there.Living in a foreign country where you don’t know the language is a challenge. It can be very rewarding, though. It is very labor intensive and takes a lot of preparation to complete even the most menial tasks of daily life that we normally take for granted. You can’t be spontaneous, like you are in your own culture because you have to plan out what you will say. You have to take into consideration all the contingencies of what will happen in a transaction.Staying in a country where you don’t speak the dominant language is like existing in a living language laboratory. Every utterance is communicative, real world oriented, hands-on, authentic, and goal-oriented because you want something. You are saying something to an actual person for a real reason. It is so different from the sterile and hypothetical book learning exercises and drills that

    Amritsar Diary
    2007-04-26 10:35:00
As our car zipped through the lanes of Amritsar at 11 in the night, I felt a strange familiarity with the city. After sleeping all the way through our journey in the Shatabdi, we were wide awake when we reached. Our destination, City Heart Hotel came in no time but I was still wondering why does this city seem familiar. In fact, this was my first visit to Punjab ... However, I turned my attention to the place where our hotel was located.Built amidst a row of shops, our hotel was a small two storey building which could have been easily mistaken for another shop had it not been for the huge banner.Just adjoining the building was an ICICI ATM along with a shop selling 'punjabi jutti' which was open even at 11.15 in the night! There were people and vehicles still going down the road ... The scene was a far cry from the deserted city that Delhi becomes at this time and they say big cities have an active night life!.The signs of commercialisation were written bold and clear all over the place. A place which has such a huge slice in the history of the nation and houses one of the most beautiful temples of this country seemed to have kept its pace with the fast moving time. This did not look like the ancient city that we had imagined. Here, my brain suddenly propped up this answer - this place is like Chandni Chowk of Delhi. Oh yes, the small but well stocked lanes, always buzzing with people was so much like the famous market of Old Delhi. The only difference here was that standing on the road in the wee hours did not make you feel vulnerable to rape or theft at any point.I again surveyed the city through the thick glass window of my hotel room next morning. At 7 a.m., the lanes had a life and freshness about them. The fruits and vegetable hawkers already seemed to have done good business. But there was one shop below which caught my eye - bannered Milk Shop, as place was attracting a lot of crowd. The people who came here to have a glass of milk, lassi or any other milk i
