Renowned motoring expert Quentin Willson recently had one of Paramount’s ‘plug and play’ economy devices fitted to his own Turbo Diesel Range Rover and declared the reduction in fuel consumption from 23mpg to 31 mpg as ’fantastic’. When he repeated the accolade to the viewers of ITV’s Tonight programme on Monday June 30, it sent Paramount’s phone ringing off the hook!

    Diesel fumes make stupid?
    2008-07-02 04:55:30
Inhaling diesel fumes leads to a transformation in the brain in the way it processes information. This is possibly done by the nano particles that are present in diesel exhaust fumes. The leader of this research Paul Borm suggests that is plausible that a long term exposure, as in a city for example, can influence [...]

Ice Cube Replaces Vin Diesel In "XXX: State Of The Union"
    2008-06-27 22:19:00
Ah...man...I’m still recovering, Ice Cube was ‘off the chain' in this movie, "XXX: State Of The Union", this movie simply had everything an action movie should have - suspense, heroes, villains, visuals, and of course action. This "XXX: State Of The Union" was so packed with energy, I didn’t get up to go to the frig until each commercial break. It was simply a great film, well put together, Arnold S must agree. "XXX: State Of The Union" is a masterpiece. This motion picture was a continuous, nonstop action-packed thriller, showing how good a movie can be. While viewing this film, I felt my blood boiling witrh anticipation of the next scene, the next eye, jaw dropping piece of special effects, the next Ice Cube sequence, this movie kept me on the edge of my seat. The only thing missing was that popcorn and that “theatre feel”, you know that large space, the crowd, but I still was totally blown away. Thank you Ice Cube for delivering an Oscar deserving performance.Check this: Ic

Pics galore: clean diesel Mercedes BlueTec SUVs coming to America
    2008-06-24 06:34:00
During at the New York Auto Show this past March, Mercedes announced that it would begin selling three clean diesel SUVs with BlueTEC - the R 320 BlueTEC, the ML 320 BlueTEC and the GL 320 BlueTEC - in America. The SUVs won't be available until the fall, but Daimler released a slew of new photos of the large diesels today and a detailed release reminding us about these U.S. Bin 5 standard compliant vehicles. In case you were curious, the photos show that these SUVs can pull horses, cross long brldges, and park in front of large houses. We'll see if these decent-but-not-great mileage SUVs (the GL 320 BlueTEC gets 25mpg) can convince customers to pull the trigger with diesel fuel running around $5 a gallon. Read more after the jump.R 320 BlueTEC, ML 320 BlueTEC and GL 320 BlueTEC - The cleanest solution: Mercedes-Benz to introduce the first diesel models with AdBlue injection in America*Cleanest exhaust emissions by injecting aqueous urea solution*Meets future stringent US Bin 5 standard

Correction: Diesel Maxima coming with automatic and maybe a stick
    2008-06-19 08:59:00
You know how it goes with the rumormill. Sometimes it tends to be spot-on in its predictions; sometimes... not so much. Such is the case with recent reports that the upcoming clean diesel engine in the Nissan Maxima would be equipped with a manual transmission only. As we reported at the time, a move like that would surely limit the new diesel's appeal to the stick-averse American buying population, and therefore hurt sales. Fear not, slushbox fans, Motive has confirmation from an engineer at Nissan that the Maxima, even in diesel form, will in fact be offered with an automatic transmission as standard. Moreover, it's the shift-it-yourself gearbox that now seems a bit unlikely. As much as we enjoy the thought of rowing our own gears with tons of diesel-supplied torque on hand, delivering the Maxima with an automatic is surely the right choice to make.[Source: Motive]

The 4.5L Diesel Tundra - Does It Make Sense?

15pc petrol pumps stop selling diesel
    2008-06-17 23:45:11
LAHORE, June 17: Diesel supplies across the country have started dipping as the government and oil marketing companies (OMCs) get entangled in a vicious circle of default, forcing 15 per cent of the petrol pumps to stop selling the product.According to the Petroleum Dealers’ Association (PDA), the NWFP has become the worst-hit province due to the huge smuggling of diesel to Afghanistan where oil prices are much higher than in Pakistan.Sources said that some 15 per cent of the petrol stations had already stopped selling diesel because of the supply squeeze and more were going out of operation on a daily basis. They said up to 50 per cent of the supplies had been hit in the last 15 days and the situation was worsening by the day.Only the PSO was partially supplying diesel and even its supplies were dwindling fast.PDA secretary-general Zakir Qureshi said that OMCs had simply stopped supplying diesel to petrol stations, without citing any reason. Mahindra's diesel pickup drops 'Appalachian' name
    2008-06-15 09:59:00
While it might not be the prettiest girl at the prom, we're still extremely intrigued by Mahindra's upcoming diesel pickup for the American market. Up until today, we've been referring to the new truck as the Appalachian, though reports now indicate that it will drop that moniker. Apparently, the Indian company wants to highlight its own name in an effort to build some much-needed brand recognition in a market it has never played in before. For that reason, some sort of nondescript name made from numbers and/or letters is to be expected.Mahindra's newly un-named truck will feature a new four-cylinder diesel engine produced just for the States with help from Bosch and AVL. Power output should hover around 150 horses, though torque is expected to be a massive 300 lb-ft. Coupled with what should be reasonable fuel economy from just 2.2 liters of displacement, we think that Mahindra's new pickup could re-ignite the compact pickup market in no time at all. At least one domestic brand might

I thought that since Diesel's away this week, it might be nice if we could take a sneak peek into Diesel's past; perhaps if we could see the formative forces behind our resident comic genius in his early years, we might better understand the insanity behind some of these posts of his. With that in mind, I recently held an interview with his parents, Mom and Pop Diesel. I'm hoping that this interview will shed some light on our blogging friend Diesel from Mattress Police.Mom Diesel: Actually, Pop's not here right now. He’s out killing gophers. Mazda 2 1.4 diesel three-door
    2008-06-11 03:21:00
Mazda's 2 supermini has been very successful since its launch in the autumn of 2007, garnering awards around the world that culminated in a World Car of the Year plaudit. It's also proved popular with buyers, with Mazda expecting to sell 85,000 cars across Europe in 2008. So the Japanese carmaker is expanding its portfolio of models with the launch of a three-door variant and the addition of a new diesel to the engine line-up, a 1.4-litre common-rail turbocharged unit that produces 67bhp at 4,000rpm and generates 118lb-ft of torque at 2,000rpm. The three-door model is intended to look a little sportier than the five-door model, with more than a nod to the Mazda Sassou concept seen at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. The front doors are slightly wider (an extra 162mm) and the rear side windows have a different shape, which have been designed to visually combine with the car's beltline, which rises towards the back of the car to create a

Clean Diesel wins future car, national engineering challenge X
    2008-05-24 06:53:00
WASHINGTON - Clean diesel technology powered the top three winning vehicles and 12 of 17 entries overall in a national engineering competition known as Challenge X to design the green cars of the future."Today we have a glimpse of the leading technologies that will power our future cars, trucks and SUVs, and it's no surprise that the winner was a clean diesel engine running on renewable biofuels, coupled with a hybrid powertrain," said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. "Challenge X demonstrates that, thanks to its energy efficiency and low CO2 emissions, clean diesel will play a far greater role in reducing our dependence on foreign oil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the years ahead. Over the next 16 months, more than a dozen new clean diesel vehicles will be available to consumers."Seventeen universities fielded engineering teams to design a car that runs on smaller amounts of fuel made from renewable resources. Volkswagen Tiguan diesel launch delayed in the U.S.?
    2008-05-19 12:42:00
All-time high gas prices have made Americans intensify their searches for top-shelf fuel economy, as evidenced by 15-year-old Geo Metros selling on eBay for $7,200. Apparently even capitalistic insanity isn't enough to convince Volkswagen to bring a diesel engine Stateside in the hotly anticipated Tiguan, as the ultra-efficient 2.0L oil-burner likely won't be available for MY 2009.Part of the problem lies in the fact that the Tiguan is selling extremely well in Europe, which negates the need to rush additional models to the US, where a weak dollar is cutting into the German automaker's profits. VW is also trying to keep the price down on the new crossover, and diesel engines add thousands to the sticker. We wouldn't be surprised if the constant delays surrounding the 2.0L TDI have anything to do with the decision, either. If a price war can break out on eBay in an effort to buy a turquoise 49 hp deathtrap, we're more than certain that Americans are willing to shell out $30k for an effic

George Buehler Yacht Design and Diesel Ducks
    2008-05-02 20:26:19
George Buehler Yacht Design was probably the starting point for my boat-building research. The Backyard Boatbuilding mailing list has a large following of extremely knowledgeable and helpful builders. It was started around a book by George Buehler named Backyard Boatbuilding. Mr. Buehler is a proponent of what I term "rough and ready" boatbuilding. Fine woodworking and high quality are fine, but some parts can be built from locally available "lumberyard" wood and common materials. He "over specifies" some of this frames, etc. to ensure high strength, and the boats that have been built to his plans seem to have been quite successful. Recently, Mr. Buehler's Diesel Duck series of designs have become quite popular (including one of the boats winning the 2007 "People's Choice" award from Passagemaker Magazine's Trawlerfest). Many are being built in steel, although the plans are available for wood or steel construction. Some versions are licensed to only be built at Seahorse Marine. Those d

Volkswagen 60MPG Jetta BlueTDI Diesel Coming
    2008-04-28 06:08:00
Volkswagen has at last finished working on its 60 mpg Jetta BlueTDI diesel, and not only does it look great, but it's coming to America later this year. The company announced at this week's International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria that the new diesel Jetta uses an updated version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with common-rail direct injection that made its debut last fall in the European-market Tiguan.Dubbed BlueTDI, the engine produces 138 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It's good for 60 mpg on the highway, a 12-percent improvement over the 2006 Jetta TDI.And thanks to some emissions tweaks - an engine-management system that mitigates toxic nitrogen oxide production by limiting combustion temperatures, and a maintenance-free trap that converts the remaining NOx to nitrogen and water - the Jetta BlueTDI meets the EPA's Bin 5/LEV 2 emissions standards. That means it's 50-state legal without the need for urea injection. Even Californians get one.The Jet

Exclusive: BMW 335d and X5 diesel to be launched in October
    2008-04-20 18:18:36
We have just received official confirmation that the most awaited BMW 3 series diesel and the X5d will be available to us in the States in mid October. The BMW 335d and the X5 xDrive35d are getting BMW's dual turbocharged 3.0L inline six diesel starting this fall. The 265-hp, 425-lb.ft. torque monster will make these vehicles among the most fuel-efficient and best performing vehicles in their class.   So, for those of you waiting to take advantage of the diesel torque, the wait is almost over and soon enough you'll have the chance to purchase one. I was also hoping that we will have some news on the 535d which we have already seen being tested in Michigan last year. No pricing has been released yet, but we were told that we should get some more information in the next couple of months.

    2008-04-08 17:55:52
Independent truck drivers are striking about high diesel fuel prices. I think that is a good thing. Will it make difference to be honest I don’t think it will. It will get attention for a day but will it change anything no. I don’t think so that is a sad thing because no one cares in America. Even the news coverage about the trucker strike no mention of it this morning. I think everyone needs start complaining about these prices. These truckers have to pay higher prices it makes higher pric

2009 Citroen C2 Facelift: Visual Enhancements and new 110 Hp 1.6L Diesel
    2008-04-04 13:23:00
For the 2009 Model Year, Citroen has enhanced the C2 hatchback by subtlety redesigning the minicar’s front end and adding a new diesel engine option. The 2009 C2 hatch is distinguished by the new fascia with changes including a redesigned bumper and a new radiator grille with wider and bigger chevrons. From May 2008, depending on the country, the C2 diesel range will be enhanced with the addition of PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s 1.6-liter HDi engine with a particulate filter. The new unit generates 110 Hp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm. According to the French carmaker, the C2 1.6 HDi 110 DPFS consumes just 4.4 l/100 km or 53.5 MPG (not bad, wouldn’t you say?) over a standard combined cycle for CO2 emissions of 119 g/km. –Continued after the jumpThe new C2 diesel version also features new suspension upgrades that include stiffer springs at the front (65% damping instead of 75%); a stiffer anti-roll bar (diameter increased from 18 mm to 20 mm at the front and fro

London police evaluate diesel Mitsubishi Lancer
    2008-03-19 20:34:44
Here in the good ol' U.S. of A., police cars are usually the largest vehicles available, with full frames and big V8 engines. It seems that something smaller and more economical will do for London's Metropolitan Police. According to their tests, the newest Lancer with the 2.0 liter DI-D diesel engine would perform admirably for police duty, earning a "Class 1 Pass for performance, brake pad wear, handling and localised component durability," according to the report. While we recognize that American roads are quite different from those in the U.K., we also believe that a more modern vehicle could serve our police just as well as their standard-fare Crown Vic. It's worked out pretty well for taxi drivers so far.[Source: Mitsubishi]Press Release: NEW MITSUBISHI LANCER'S 'CLASS 1' METROPOLITAN POLICE PERFORMANCE, BRAKE AND HANDLING TEST London's Metropolitan Police put the new Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 DI-D GS4 through it's paces Lancer achieves a Class 1 Pass for performance, brake pad wea

Lancashire Constabulary choose diesel Mitsubishi Outlander
    2008-03-19 19:20:37
The Lancashire Constabulary has ordered four Mitsubishi Outlanders powered by the 2.2 liter diesel engine option for their "rural patrol" vehicles. According to Chris Malkin, Fleet & Transport Manager from Lancashire Constabulary, the Outlander won out due to its "high mpg with low carbon emissions, a reduced environmental impact and low running costs." Malkin also mentioned the Outlander's solid safety scores and high level of standard equipment as reasons that it was chosen. We're not sure what vehicles were replaced, but we can be sure that the emissions were reduced in the switch. Each year, emissions standards get tougher so the air is cleaner as older fleets are replaced with new vehicles. [Source: Car Pages]

ALMS Rumor: Acura Moving Up To LMP1 With A Diesel?

    Diesel taxes in Europe
    2008-03-17 11:12:13
"The European Commission says the wide variation in rates of diesel (officially known as gas oil) taxes creates distortions in the road haulage market – and also increases environmental damage by encouraging “fuel tourism” by hauliers (i.e. making special journeys or using longer routes in order to fill up in a country with low taxes). Also, since diesel and petrol have similar impacts, especially from the point of view of CO2 emissions, there is no environmental reason for the two minimum rates to differ. The Commission is therefore proposing to raise the minimum rate on diesel up to the minimum rate on petrol.""Adopting by 447 votes in favour to 64 against with 39 abstentions a report based on a draft by Olle Schmidt (ALDE, SE), MEPs agreed with this in principle, but said the minimum taxes on diesel should rise more slowly, from the current level of €302/1000 litres to the current petrol level of €359/1000 litres by 2015 rather than 2012. Hot Mazda 6 gets diesel engine
    2008-02-29 20:17:00
We’ve learned that Mazda will be launching a 175bhp diesel version of the new 6 at the end of the year. The engine is understood to be based on a new 2.2 litre capacity version of Mazda’s own 2.0 litre diesel unit, which was recently upgraded to 138 bhp in the new Mazda 6 – and is not related to the Ford-PSA joint venture diesel motor of similar capacity and power. It will come with a six-speed manual gearbox and will give Mazda a competitor to the growing number of high-output four-cylinder diesel motors being offered by Volkswagen, Renault, Ford, Peugeot and Citroen. The launch of the new car is tipped to be at the Paris show in September. An idea to bring the launch forward to the London show in July is understood to have been scrapped.

New Ecowhat?! Fiat Bravo 1.6 Diesel Multijet
    2008-02-28 03:21:28
As you might recall from one of my previous posts, I have serious doubts about the so-called environment-friendly diesel cars. For example, Fiat is launching a new 1.6 diesel engine for the Bravo range, in 103 or 118bhp variants, both Euro 5 compliant, thanks to a new particle filter. AND a third “Eco” model, with the same motor, 103bhp and CO2 emissions of just 119g/km, which is not Euro 5 compliant because removing the particle filter was the only trick Fiat could find to keep CO2 emissions bellow the 120 g/km threshold. The dirty trick will not work in Luxembourg, because the 750 euros reduction from the governmental scheme for cleaner cars can only be granted for a diesel car equipped with a particle filter: “Pour les voitures équipées d’un moteur à carburant diesel, l’aide financière [750 euros] n’est accordée que si les émissions de particules fines sont inférieures ou égales à 5 mg/km, un filtre à particules est dès lors indispensable" (in car-e.lu) .Blog

    Chrysler Unveils Diesel 300C SRT
    2008-02-24 11:15:00
Chrysler unveils the diesel powered 300C SRT in Europe. But not exactly what you think. Basically a trim package for the 300C in Europe, the SRT model gets visual enhancements such as a new rear taillight clusters and a deck lid spoiler, but the car still uses the same 3.0L V6 diesel producing 218 bhp and 376 pound feet of torque you can get in other models. While the wheels appear to be the same 10-spokers as the US spec 300C SRT8, the front fascia lacks the deeper chin spoiler and the grille is Chrysler's Euro-spec Bentley-like tight mesh.

Geneva ‘08 Preview: Volkswagen to show diesel-hybrid Golf possibly coming to US
    2008-02-22 18:24:38
Channel 4 in Britain is reporting that one of the vehicles that Volkswagen will be showing in Geneva in a couple of weeks is a diesel hybrid version of the Golf. Although VW has been experimenting with various hybrid powertrains since at least the early '90s, they have yet to offer one in production. Apparently Volkswagen has developed this system primarily for the U.S. market and it will be Tier 2 Bin 5 compliant. The system will likely be offered on the Golf (branded as a Rabbit in the U.S.) and at least two of its platformmates, the Jetta sedan and the Audi A3. The Golf is expected to get 69.2 mpg (U.S.) and emit carbon dioxide at the rate of 89g/km. Most likely, this will be some sort of mild hybrid setup in order to make it cost-effective in the U.S. market. Volkswagen is also developing a strong hybrid system that will be installed on the Touareg and Q7 next year. [Source: Channel 4]

    Bentley goes diesel power
    2008-02-18 09:29:00
Given the enthusiastic response to its Audi R8 V12 TDI concept not to mention its diesel-powered dominance of prototype endurance racing in the Le Mans and American Le Mans series, it hardly comes as a surprise to learn that the Volkswagen Group is mulling over a diesel engine for its rarefied Bentley range.Similar to Rolls-Royce, which is also considering such an engine for its forthcoming RR4 model, the Bentley seems a wholly logical recipient for a low-revving, torque-rich diesel engine, now that now that advanced engine-management and emission-control systems have consigned the noisy, foul-smelling diesel to history.Although either VW's existing 5.0-liter V-10 TDI or Audi's under-development 6.0-liter V-12 TDI would seem a fine starting point, Bentley insists they're both too big to fit beneath the hood of the Continental Flying Spur (pictured above). We're skeptical about that, however, as the V-10 manages to fit just fine in the Flying Spur's corporate cousin, the VW Phaeton, and

Lutz in tune with U.S. car buyers; sees flexfuel as more valuable than diesel
    2008-01-29 01:53:42
As I wrote earlier today, new car buyers in the U.S. are more in favor of hybrids than diesels - by a huge margin. Over at The Car Connection, we find some comments by GM's vice chairman Bob Lutz that are in alignment with the KBB study. Lutz's view is that diesels won't appeal to American buyers. The reason is price. Lutz said:Frankly in the United States, with diesel fuel the same price as (gasoline), I don't think that many Americans are going to pay a $3,000 or $4,000 premium for a modern diesel engine. On top of the normal diesel premium, you now have advanced emission systems. Unless we decide to eat the cost, which unfortunately we can't afford to do, I think customers are going to say, 'Wait a minute. At equal fuel prices I'm paying $4,000 more for this.' It will not be like Germany. So, the strike against diesels is the cost. Instead of the oil burners, Lutz predicts, customers will drive green through flex-fuel vehicles. Convenient, considering that GM just announced a big cellulosic ethanol deal with Coskata. Still, we're getting a pretty good idea today of the image trouble diesels have in the U.S. Related: Lutz says gas prices will need to go up if Americans are to embrace small cars Detroit 2008: GM and Coskata announce worldwide cellulosic ethanol partnership [Source: The Car Connection]

Mercedes could be jumping into the high-performance diesel race with AMG
    2008-01-26 18:58:01
We first brought up the topic of a diesel-powered AMG Mercedes last April after the New York Auto Show. Now on the heels of the Audi R8 V-12 TDI in Detroit, the story is back. AMG is the in-house tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz that installs over-sized, over-powered engines into the Stuttgart machines and adds suspension, brake and visual aids to match the output. According to AutoExpress, AMG is very close to pulling the trigger on a diesel engine. In AMGs hands the Mercedes-Benz 4.0L V-8 with 320 hp and 538 ft-lbs of torque would be the likely starting point. Something approaching the 700+lb-ft of torque in the R8 would probably be the target. With new CO2 standards coming in the EU, Mercedes will surely be loathe to give up the profits the AMG models surely generate and this would definitely be a way to do it without sacrificing much, if any, performance.[Source: AutoExpress]

Subaru Launches Diesel Outback/Legacy Wagon In The UK
    2008-01-24 12:41:26
Almost a year after announcing their new diesel boxer engine at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Subaru has finally launch it in the UK. The Outback and the Legacy Sports Tourer (aka station wagon) will be on sale in February in the the UK with a 2.0L horizontally-opposed four-cylinder diesel engine. This apparently is the first diesel engine of this configuration ever installed in a production passenger car.The new plant is rated at 150hp and 258 lb-ft of torque with an impressive 4,7 L/ 100 km (41.3 mpg) . That's better than either the Mondeo or Passat diesel wagons and the Subaru has all wheel drive. The Legacy wagon gets from 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in a respectable 8.5 seconds, even with this impressive mileage. We can expect to see this engine appear under the hood of the Forester and Imprezza in mid-2010.
