    Cravings and Yo-Yo Dieting
    2008-07-18 18:40:44
Yo-yo dieting, also referred to as “weight cycling,” is when cravings overpower any positive effects that a dieter has received by following whatever program allowed them to lose weight. You usually hear cravings and yo-yo dieting mentioned when a person loses a certain amount of weight, gains it back, and then loses it again, feeding into a vicious cycle of dieting ups and downs. The cravings that come with yo-yo dieting can be quite a physically, as well as emotionally draining process.Unhealthy PracticesThere have been studies done on people who feed into the cravings and yo-yo diet, determining that these repeated cycles of weight loss and weight gain is an unhealthy practice. It results in the weakening of the body, as well as decrease in the functionality and strength of the body’s major organs, immune system and overall health of the individual.Looking for a quick solution to a weight problem is more likely to end in diet failure - these quick fixes come in many forms. When p

    Some Helpful Tips For Dieting
    2008-07-15 03:57:15
If you are like most you will have to diet sometime in your life. I know I have dieted off and on for years going all the way back to my bodybuilding days when strict tuna and water diets were the means to attaining as low a body fat measurement as possible. I would like to share with you some of the things I have learned over the years to help with the dieting process.Regardless of the diet you choose it is essential that you set goals for what you are trying to achieve. When I say goals, I mean written goals. If you don’t write your goals down your chances of success are almost nil. Also, set rewards along with the goals. If you reach a certain weight goal in a week reward yourself with a favorite snack, in a small portion of course. Another thing you can do is reward yourself with some new clothes. Now, let’s get into the dieting itself. Many diets are doomed to fail because they make you hungry. Yeah, I know everyone tells you that if you are trying to lose weight you have to be

    Five Really Tough Dieting Tips
    2008-07-10 06:45:49
If you are losing, trying to lose, or think you need to lose, weight, you are probably as sick as I am of those "easy" and "quick" diet tips that NEVER work! The following tips are neither quick nor easy. They are tough, uncomfortable, and demanding (but they work).1. Don't Eat.On a permanent basis, that obviously doesn't make sense unless you have a secret death wish. On a temporary basis, it is worth considering. Just like the recovering alcoholic who takes it one day at a time, not eating for "just today" becomes do-able, once in a while. If you can convince yourself that you can have anything you want to eat, tomorrow, not eating becomes a viable alternative for today. On an even shorter-term basis, delaying a planned meal for a few hours can be useful if you stick to what you had planned to eat and don't wolf everything in sight to "make up" for your temporary deprivation. A decrease in the total caloric intake for the day, the week, the month, is the over-riding goal.2. Get Your B

Can TV Teach You Anything about Dieting
    2008-07-06 19:02:48
All over the world, night after night, millions of people are riveted to their TV sets - but not to watch the latest soap, or CSI. Not to watch Jay Leno or Sex in the City. Not to see who outwits, outlasts and outplays others in Survivor. No - they are spellbound by the efforts of a small band of obese people trying to overcome the effects of years of overeating. It's not surprising that for so many people this is compulsive viewing. Obesity is the new epidemic. Fat children lumber around school playgrounds while their overweight mothers fill shopping carts with wrong choices. Then... they sit down at night to watch The Biggest Loser. They see dramatic weight loss and startling new body shapes beginning to emerge. They want the same results - and they begin to think it might be possible. But who has four or five hours a day to work out? Who can afford a personal trainer several times a week? And who has the luxury of their own personal adviser on calorie content and smart food choices? T

    A Diet With Dieting Shake
    2008-06-28 08:22:00
Different diet allows different foods. For some diets, you may be required to take tons of fruits and vegetables. Some other diets may require you to cut of the intake of carbohydrates. Of course there are also diets which only let you eat one sing food every day. For a particular kind of diet, you will be required to take the dieting shake. In fact, the basic concept behind the diet is that you can only take the shakes for your breakfast and lunch every day. Besides the shakes, you will be allowed to eat a little bit of fruit and a nutrition bar for these two meals. For the dinner, however, you will be allowed to eat the food you like. Of course you have to make the dinner a balanced one. If you think of it clearly, you will find that you can only eat nutritious food at the dinner time. You are only getting some vitamins and minerals from the shakes. This means that you in fact eat very little a day. The amount of food you eat can just keep you alive! Besides the above eating plan,

When eating with someone else, calories don't count if you both eat the same amount.4. Foods used for medicinal purposes have no calories. This includes any chocolate used for energy, Sara Lee cheesecake (eaten whole), and Haagen-Dazs ice cream.5. The Dangers Of Fad Dieting
    2008-04-27 19:11:12
Almost everywhere you turn, fad diets are appearing. They often deliver results, but at what cost? Is there a healthier but still effective option? You’re joining your friend for lunch. She looks great. She’s shed the extra twenty pounds that she’s been carrying since college, and she’s dressed in a slinky black outfit that makes you a bit envious. When you question her about it, she tells you she’s been on the Atkins diet. She proceeds to recount how she ate a pile of bacon for breakfast, and some pork rinds for a midmorning snack, and you feel your eyes widen in shock when she orders a double cheeseburger off the menu. Is this really a smart diet?“Are you really going to eat that?” You stare in awe at the size of the two monster hamburger patties. She quickly peels the bread off her burger, discarding it on the side of her plate.“Sure,” She quips. “I can eat all the meat I want, cooked anyway I want.”With all the fad diets circling around, it’s important to eva

Why Dieting May Not Be The Answer
    2008-04-22 19:40:00
Obesity is a real life problem that is spreading fast throughout the Western world but most particularly in the USA. It has given rise to literally 100s of diets and a huge money making industry that has grown up around peoples’ desperate need to shed those pounds. However there is far more to losing weight than a mere diet.Diets are good for emergency weight loss but they are in effect just a quick fix. Many people go thorough with a weight loss diet and do indeed lose weight and are ecstatic! Then when they return to a normal diet they see those pounds returning and pretty soon they are the same, or worse still, heavier than they were in the beginning. Depressed they give up and resign themselves to being fat.You can avoid this happening to you with a few simple steps:Avoid fad diets (ones in fashion) and “lose weight quick diets”Do not just rely on diet alone combine with other weight loss techniquesExerciseMindsetDiets in fashion are just that. They are not usually long lasti

Dieting Options - The Atkins Diet
    2008-04-17 21:24:54
When the Atkins diet was introduced, which included a low carbohydrate menu it revolutionalized the dieting world. “Atkins Nutritional Approach” is the philosophy. By eating high-protein and high fat, loss of weight is assured. The assumption is a limited quantity of simple carbohydrates combined with exercise leads to a healthy life.Food containing low fat is not the way to control weight and to ensure a healthy lifestyle is the controversial belief of the Atkins diet. Dr. Atkins blames carbohydrates such as potatoes, fruits, pastas and grains for weight gain. According to him, the weight loss could be achieved by reducing carbohydrates. He believes that a diet containing too much carbohydrate makes the body retain fat.A four-phase diet plan to lose weight is promoted by the Atkins diet programme. Maintaining the weight loss is carried out through the last phase of the plan.Limiting the carbohydrate grams is encouraged in the Atkins diet. During the first two weeks of the plan, al

I was reading this post and was really moved by it so I wanted to share, it is kimkins related but I found it to be much more then that:"People don’t see eating disorders with fat people. They see desperation and lack of self control. They’ve eaten so much they deserve to be that way. They’ve let themselves go. They’re disgusting, it’s their fault.I am fat. I am overweight. I do not overeat. I am not lazy. I am not gluttonous. I have not let myself go. I do not sit on my ass all day. And I have an eating disorder."Read the post here: Diet fraud: redefining anorexia

My Dieting and How It Helps Me Understand My Kids Behaviors
    2007-09-10 15:14:01
If you'd like to read in more detail (though not a great deal of detail) about my lack of dieting success this week, you can do so here. But the bottom line is that when I don't lose weight after I get on the scales, I want to give up and throw in the towel.I think that this habit of mine helps me to understand my kids. Let's say that a kid with behavioral challenges wakes up and says, "I'm going to try to be good today" (whatever good might be). They really do try their hardest that day, but because of their special needs it doesn't go so well. They get scolded at home for forgetting that they aren't supposed to torture the dog, they get in trouble on the bus because they got distracted and doodled on the back of the seat, they were off task several times and got "yelled at" at school, and they came home and had a sibling pick a fight with them that wasn't really their fault. At the end of the day, do you not think they might say, just as I did after I got off the scale this mor

Dieting And Will Power- Strange Bed Fellow?
    2007-08-01 09:40:00
By Mark KimathiIt is never clear to many whether they need will power to diet or not. Depending on your source of information, you will probably be either way. But for many, the lack of will power in a dieting endeavor could be the reason they are never able to lose weight. Yet the question remains is dieting and will power unrelated? You likely have come across information like you cannot depend on will power to lose weight. The question to retort back would then be what then should you depend on?Will power is the ability to control ones action, emotions and impulses. The famous American motivational speaker Phil McGraw refers to being overweight as "loss of control" And this rings true because you grow fat to the extent that you lose control of your food choices, food portions and similar calorie related decisions. To tell you the truth, there is probably no thing as powerful as the backing of will-power to lose weight. And this will power exists in everyone. And like all other major achievements in life it is a central requirement in losing weight. And just to prove this point in case of weight loss surgery where the individual doesn't comply or is not willing to take up the after weight loss surgery lifestyle; they will still regain the dramatic weight loss achieved by the surgery. This is inspite of the fact that their stomach is 5% its original size and the intestines are re-routed to reduce calorie intake.Indeed the concept that permanent weight loss is a change of lifestyle is exactly about will power. Changing lifestyle means changing your everyday decisions to agree with the desire to have a healthy weight. The real problem with will power is not that it does not exist in the individual, rather is that there is no good reason to use it. Will power when deployed is a major resource in the human arsenal of performance. But it needs a reason to get activated.Take the case of the Governor of Arkansas who lost 100 pounds and has literally ripped muscles all withou

My Fitness Pal - free dieting site
    2007-06-26 09:17:00
MyFitnessPal is a diet site with a difference - there are no costs involved - it’s FREE! There is a section on foods and their attributes –this section has a database of different foods and can report on fat content, calories etc… There’s a section on calories used during exercise – again a database of exercises and a place to enter your weight and the duration of the exercise. A bulletin board so that you can get involved in their community, post comments and questions for like-minded individuals. I am not one to be that interested in dieting, but out of curiosity I did look to see how many calories I burned playing football last night (680 apparently…) and how many calories were in the chocolate I ate afterwards (1070…ooops). If I was actually on a diet and used the calorie counter, I could have found out that information BEFORE eating the chocolate. When you register, you can track your diet, your exercise and your weight count to get an overall picture of your pr

Another Myth Exploded -- Dieting Does Not Work
    2007-04-23 02:41:00
UCLA researchers report that diets generally do not help people lose weight and keep it off. In general, people initially lose 5 percent to 10 percent of their weight on any given of diets, but then gain it back, often with some additional pounds as well. The information is the result of a comprehensive and rigorous analysis of 31 long-term diet studies. The researchers concluded that most people would be better off not going on a diet at all.The initial 5 percent to 10 percent loss generally occurs during the first six months. However, up to two-thirds of dieters then regain more weight than they lost within four or five years. Also, since diet studies are frequently self-reported or have poor follow-up rates, the number of people who regained weight may be even higher than the studies indicate.Dieting is actually a consistent predictor of future weight gain; one study showed that those who participate in formal weight-loss programs gain significantly more weight over a two-year period

If you want to lose weight...stop dieting!
    2007-04-19 22:15:34
Does this seem like a contradiction? Lose weight without dieting...how is that possible? If you have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight in the past, chances are you tried a special diet. And you probably lost weight. The important question of course being, did you keep it off permanently? For many the answer is no. In fact a recent study conducted at UCLA showed that short term dieting (up to about 6 months) can be achieved, but 2/3's of all dieters regain the weight within 4 - 5 years. If you are interested in reading more about the study, click here . (This link will only be active until 5/2, so if you want a summary of the study results after this date, send me an email and I'll forward one to you.)The reason that these diets ultimately fail is that the underlying causes of overeating aren't usually addressed. The focus is all on counting calories, restricting fats, cutting out carbs, not eating after 7pm, or other such tactics. What do I mean by this? Taking a loo
