Educational Toys to Improve Attention Deficit Disorder
    2008-06-29 00:00:00
Children with attention deficit disorder often struggle in school because of their short attention spans. Many quickly decide that they are “dumb” or “stupid” when the simple truth is that their condition is causing them to fail in the traditional school setting, which requires children to focus on one activity for an extended period of [...]

Study: Meditation Against Attention Deficits Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
    2008-05-29 08:40:07
By Alvaro FernandezIn The Huffington Post Travel back, in your mind's eye, to a time when you felt a healthy exhaustion after hiking, biking, playing sports.., and let you re-live that moment as vividly as you can. Then, remember, re-experience, a loving exchange that really touched you. Pause. See your partner. See the moment. Smell it. Hear what happened around you.Next, visualize the most caring gesture you have ever received, as full of details as possible. Who gave you that gift of caring. How you felt. Now, travel to the most magnificent place you have seen. Enjoy the views. Pause. Listen. Smile. Appreciate.Congratulations. You have trained your brain. As Newsweek's Sharon Begley explained recently:But now neuroscientists have documented how "mere" thoughts can also sculpt the brain. Just thinking about playing a piano piece, over and over, can expand the region of motor cortex that controls those fingers; just thinking about depressive thoughts in new ways can dial down activity i

A Binge Eating Disorder is Treatable
    2008-05-27 20:56:18
If you overeat on a regular basis in order to cope with stress or negative feelings then it is quite possible that you suffer from a binge eating disorder. In addition, the over eater feels even worse after they have finished their binge. An important point to note is that this condition is treatable. Therefore, please consult a physician as soon as possible if you suffer from this condition.A binge eating disorder is seen as compulsive overeating where the person eats a large amount of food without being able to stop eating or control their eating. These episodes can last for a couple of hours at a time. In some cases, the individual will eat off and on all day long. They will eat when they are not hungry and will not stop eating even when they are completely full. Another symptom is that they could eat so fast that they do not even register what they have just eaten. As you can see, a binge eating disorder can be extremely harmful. It leaves the person with feelings of guilt and feeli

The Most Likely Cause For Anxiety Disorder
    2008-05-12 11:09:00
Anxiety can enter anyone's life in a most mysterious manner. Even though it is thought to take hold of those who are normally nervous or high-strung, this is not necessarily true. Anybody can find him or herself inflicted with an anxiety disorder. It may seem logical to think the A-type, or on-edge person will be the most likely candidate for becoming anxiously ill, but in the long run this philosophy doesn't hold true. Adrenaline responds to a fight or flight reaction. So, it may be those who are nervous by nature are used to and therefore, less prone to fight their nerves. This means they will be less inclined to stoke the fires of anxiety by trying to fight or runaway from the feelings of anxiousness. At this point, it is beneficial to recognize there is a difference between one of these persons who is high strung by nature and one who is currently in a stressed out condition. In this article, we will see if we can recognize traits of those of us who have had or now experience anxie

    Eating Disorder - Binge Eating
    2008-05-11 06:27:47
Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which the sufferer consumes food, unusually large amounts of food, on a regular basis in a brief period of time, hungry or not and continues to eat until they feel rather uncomfortable. These bouts are usually followed by feelings of guilt. Here the sufferer does not induce purging after binging unlike in the case of bulimia. This eating disorder is a problem, which affects both men and women but it is more common in women. This unhealthy habit of overeating tends to develop during childhood. What are the possible causes of binge eating disorder? It is still difficult to pin point the exact cause or causes of this disorder. However, the following may be some of the causes of this eating disorder:Depression - No one actually knows for sure if depression is a cause or an effect of binge eating disorder but it has been noted that about fifty percent of the individuals with this disorder have a history of depression or are depressed. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Meltdowns
    2008-04-29 18:41:19
Dominyk is having a meltdown. It is his second major meltdown today. The first one lasted forty-five minutes after school. He took a break and finally went with his PCA and did something but came back and started in again after supper. This one has lasted almost thirty minutes and is going strong.I talked to the psychiatrist today. She said all we have to do is not give in and he will learn to stop begging. I explained that it had been 3 months since we had given in and it didn't seem to be making a difference. She told me we should hang in there.I want to send him to her house.

[Wikipedia] April 20: Reactive attachment disorder
    2008-04-19 22:07:35
Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is the diagnostic term for severe and relatively uncommon disorders of attachment that can affect children. RAD is characterized by markedly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate ways of relating socially in most contexts. It can take the form of a persistent failure to initiate or respond to most social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way—known as the "inhibited" form—or can present itself as indiscriminate sociability, such as excessive familiarity with relative strangers—known as the "disinhibited form". RAD arises from a failure to form normal attachments to primary caregivers in early childhood. Such a failure could result from severe early experiences of neglect, abuse, abrupt separation from caregivers between the ages of six months and three years, frequent change of caregivers, or a lack of caregiver responsiveness to a child's communicative efforts. Evidence suggests that Parkinson's is primarily an inherited genetic disorder
    2008-04-16 10:11:02
Two new international studies by researchers at the Mayo Clinic site in Florida are rounding out the notion that Parkinson’s disease is largely caused by inherited genetic mutations that pass through scores of related generations over hundreds, if not thousands of years. These genetic influences, which can be small but additive, or large and causative, overturn common beliefs that the neurodegenerative disease mostly occurs in a random fashion or is due to undetermined environmental factors. read more

Julia's Brain Tries On Attention Deficit Disorder

I've got a list of different thoughts in my head. I just need to write it down and am going to blog it to show what a mess my head is today.- I need to pick up birthday cards, use the $10 JCPenney coupon and free coupon thing for Victoria's Secret.- I need to make sure I get the next set of quilts into the wash and that I get the bed made up tonight.- I need to remember that the next time I want to live blog something, I can just Twitter it rather than worry about finding a computer to log onto. It'll show up in the sidebar anyway.- Maybe I need to stop by Office Max to pick up file folder labels so I can re-use some old file folders and switch out labels on the hanging files in the old filing cabinet.- I wonder if I can convince Matt to stop by Target on Saturday. I really need a couple new dresses and they had some cute ones that were nicely priced. It would solve some of my "What the hell am I going to wear for Mark's birthday party/Easter/3 million weddings??" issue.- I wonder

    Liberalism as a mental disorder
    2008-02-18 05:58:00
Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.“Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,” says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, “The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness.” “Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.”“When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious.”Via Infidels are Cool

Which Jesus: A Legend with a Multiple Personality Disorder?
    2008-02-14 23:54:51
Which Jesus: A Legend with a Multiple Personality Disorder? By Rook Hawkins Recently I wrote an article on the genre of the Gospels, and determined that the biographical genre of the Gospels is in serious doubt. The Gospels can not longer be considered a history of the life of Jesus. In this article I also brought up the position that modern scholars attempting to find the historical Jesus in the Gospel narratives are in fact fracturing the Gospels into specific sections and verses, while also using personal bias to determine which verse is ‘historical’ and which is not. Although I put forth the probable position that the Gospels are meant to be read as literary fiction, I purposefully left several questions unanswered; who wrote them and why were they written? read more

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Understand The Cause And Cure The Symptoms Naturally
    2008-01-21 23:32:47
SAD, otherwise known as 'seasonal affective disorder', is systemic in nature, and this condition can affect anywhere from 5 to 25 percent of the American population. The symptoms can range from a relatively mild subtype form, of which affects a larger number of people and is commonly known as the 'winter blues', to more of a 'I can't get out of bed' type of clinical depression that affects a smaller portion of the population. Both, though, disappear just as soon as daylight hours begin to increase in the spring. SAD seems to affect more females, 70 to 80 % of all sufferers, for unknown reasons, than males or children. Symptoms in males, however, can be more severe. The whole seasonal affective disorder phenomenon has not always been recognized as a medical condition. The term was first acknowledged, and appeared in 1985. The onset of the condition typically can begin as soon as late summer or early fall arrives, and can last until mid to late spring. Roughly 6 to 7 percent of the populat

Still Don't Think Theism is a Mind Disorder...Part Deux
    2008-01-15 03:35:17
Since there have been so many things that I wanted to address in the comments, plus the fact that it got long as hell, I decided to post it here. Enjoy.   Quote: No atheism here. Submitted by Fenriz on January 13, 2008 - 2:37pm. Religion is different from illegal drugs because it is societally protected. Even if religion is destructive, it won't carry the same stigma as drugs because too many people support it. Your analogy is more effective with tobacco and alcohol, which are both traditionally accepted features of our culture despite the harms they can inflict. Because they are so ingrained in our culture, we won't get rid of them regardless the problems to which they contribute (though tobacco could be teetering on the brink of extinction). I agree that it is considered taboo to critique religion too harshly, but is that respect deserved? Would we not be better off as a society if events such as these didn't happen? Some people will find other reasons to engage in destructive behaviors, but why not eliminate as many potential catalysts as possible? READ MORE » Bookmark/Search this post with: | | | | | | |

Still Don't Think that Theism is a Mental Disorder?
    2008-01-13 00:45:55
Wow. A whole barrage of nonsense came at us in the past two weeks or so. First off...a man cuts off his own hand after seeing the Mark of the Beast on it. With a circular saw. And then microwaves it. And then calls the authorities. A quote from one of the sherriff's deputies states, "That kind of mental illness is just sad." I couldn't agree more. Now, I know what you guys are going to say--"It's not BECAUSE of religion." Actually, I don't think that a case could be made either way. Was he likely vulnerable to delusional behavior? Yeah, I'll concede that one. The fact that religion is unique in its ability to seep into the crevices of your mind so pervasively that this theme plays out in our society over and over again isn't addressed by that statement, though. How do the appeasers and framers answer that? Maybe it only manifests itself in those already prone to mental illness, but isn't that akin to excusing and perpetuating a belief system that preys on the weak? What exactly is it that causes atheists to feel this compulsion to cover for a malevolent, archaic belief that has caused mothers to kill their children, countless cases of child abuse, seemingly endless wars and violence, and self-mutilation and flagellation that can be traced back to the very foundation of the religion? 8 Tips to Help Prevent "Pica": A Dog Compulsive Disorder
    2007-11-18 21:15:00
With some dogs, meals aren't the only source of oral intake they have. Wool and other fibers, non-digestible plant material, rubber, plastic, wood, and even their own hair are just some of the things a dog may choose to ingest. This problem - the drive to consume material that is not generally considered food – is called “pica” and is what animal behaviorists call a compulsive disorder. In a human, a compulsive disorder may be repetitive, such as frequent hand washing or pulling one's hair out. In dogs, these disorders can include excessive licking and spinning in circles. Compulsive disorders are repetitive, nonfunctional, nonbeneficial behaviors. Although the exact cause of compulsive disorders is unknown, animal behaviorists feel that they are often caused by stress brought on by environmental conflicts such as competition with other pets, changes in the home, constant punishment, or confinement to small areas such as cages or crates.Lack of socialization or too much attentio

Cure Your Sleep Disorder With Natural Treatments
    2007-09-26 08:41:36
The treatments for sleep disorders today can be generally grouped into three categories: behavioral or psychotherapeutic treatments, sleep medications or drugs and treatments that don't fit into the other two categories. The excessive sleep disorder narcolepsy will cause most patients to have unexpected periods of sleep throughout the day for as little as a few minutes to as long as half an hour at times. There are generally three types of sleep disorders: lack of enough sleep, sleep disturbance, and too much or excessive sleep. The person suffering from a sleep disorder may have difficulty getting to sleep at night or staying asleep as well as having difficulty staying awake through the day; they may also experience different types of behaviors that prevent them from staying asleep during their normal sleeping hours. One type of sleep disorder, lack of sleep, is also commonly known as insomnia and is what people usually have rather than a more complex sleeping disorder.Sleep apnea can be life threatening; this problem is usually accompanied by heavy and loud snoring and causes the person to wake up sometimes hundred of times during the night without remembering ever being awake. In the excessive sleep disorder type the most well-known is called narcolepsy. Finding that you need coffee, colas or other caffeine drinks throughout the day to stay alert or awake can also be a hint that sleep disorder treatments need to be investigated. There are number of sleep disorders that appear in different people and even those with similar sleep disorders often display different symptoms. Many people say they survive nicely on four or five hours of sleep; others say they need nine or even ten hours. The sleep disorder narcolepsy can have complications such as cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations; cataplexy is the weakness or complete paralysis of the muscles, and hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid dreams that happen during the stage of sleep between being awake and being asleep.Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome is a sleep disorder of circadian rhythm, characterized by the inability to wake up and fall asleep at the desired times, but not by the inability to stay asleep. Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is the involuntary movement of arms and/or legs during sleep. Narcolepsy is the sleep disorder of falling asleep spontaneously and unwillingly.Don't get into the habit of drinking a glass of wine, hard liquor, or any other alcoholic beverage at bedtime; alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and it will interfere with your REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and cause other problems you might not be aware of. Some health experts suggest that contracting then relaxing all your muscles starting with your toes and proceeding upwards as you lie in bed can help you relax. In bed do try to focus on anything pleasant, long enough to distract you from any worries that are keeping you awake. Some people say that sleeping with your head facing north helps you fall asleep because your body is better aligned with the earth. Concentrating on some of the insomnia tips you've heard in the past may put your mind at rest long enough to allow you to go to sleep. Your pillow may make you feel as though you're lying uphill or downhill and if it is too hard may press into your head uncomfortably, reducing the chance of your falling asleep. In some sleep tests they used a flashlight to shine light on the back of the knee and tested the reaction of the brain on the sleeping centers and the light was detected; your body knows when there is a light shining on the back side of your body. Make sure that you don't have any light on in the bedroom, including the red light on digital clocks, night lights or any other light, even a small flicker; any light at all can stop the production of melatonin which is produced when it starts getting dark enough in your bedroom but may shut down if even the smallest light is glowing. You need to produce melatonin for a good nights sleep. If you lie in bed struggling with the day's stresses and worries, try some of the insomnia tips you've heard over the years such as counting sheep or visualizing a blank screen. Some doctors may offer sleeping medications as a short-term solution along with some insomnia tips, but will seek to find the underlying cause of the sleeplessness and treat the cause instead of the symptom. Among the many insomnia tips provided by doctors and other health professionals, the most important tip is the ability to get physically relaxed enough to fall asleep.Finding the solution to your sleeping problems or sleep disorder will be worth the investment in time. Your doctor or sleep specialist may be able to recommend support groups to you. Consider going to a sleep disorder center because they provide the newest research for the many issues that involve any sleep disorder. For more information on sleep disorder and sleep disorder treatments go to a nurse's website http://www.SleepDisorderTips.com specializing in sleep disorder tips, treatments, natural treatments, and causes for adult, child and infant including information on insomnia and sleep disorder centers

Compulsive overeating or binge eating is a common eating disorder in which people eat and eat, even after they are completely full. Compulsive overeaters often feel “out of control” with food, so much that they literally cannot stop eating. This problem is different from bulimia nervosa (where people binge, but then try “purge” food out [...]

Eating Disorder Recovery: Musings on My Journey
    2007-07-29 22:54:00
I forget that I am in recovery from an eating disorder.I forget a lot.I come back here to write and I find myself wandering off...to play guitar, to read a book, to paint, to write poetry, to explore different yoga practices, research different careers that I'm curious about, to answer the phone, to clean the house, to have a four hour marathon conversation with my best friend, to go to a concert, to take a long walk with my camera, to explore new streets, to spend time with my husband sharing our vision for our family (should we be blessed to have our own little miracle some day), to go to the beach...I was musing last night about the journey of recovery. My journey...To recover my inner voice, authentic drive, spirit, health, hope, feelings (the full spectrum), self-confidence and to transform my passion that was so negatively driven by external "markings" of achievement into a desire to truly live and experience life in the moment. For me, living in the moment was something I never q

    Sleep Disorder With Benefits
    2007-07-21 16:53:49
Healthy sleep is essential to maintaining overall good health. Missing a couple of nights of sleep can render the best of us dysfunctional throughout ordinary daily activities. In treating any mental condition sleep must be addressed, because a problem here could be the root of whatever the presenting complaint is. The exact reason we require sleep has never been scientifically proven but it is reasonably believed that physiological and psychological restoration and repair occur during sleep. The nervous system is the most complex and interactive system of the body and during waking hours it must constantly be engaged with a constantly changing environment. These changes in the environment are representative of stress which is essential for us to thrive in life but can also be deadly if managed inappropriately or it exceeds coping capacity for too long. Many people choose the escape of sleep to avoid or evade undesirable circumstances, while others find themselves unable to sleep at all. Lack of sleep is more detrimental to health, in the long run, due to excessive wear and tear on ones nervous system and tendency to worry constantly about things one has no control of whatsoever. At least with excessive sleep as the coping mechanism the individual can escape to dreamland and preserve the body's physiological function until the perceived threat diminishes to a conquerable level. For many years I've experienced a condition known as sleep paralysis. I had an extended bout last night and feel  very unrested this morning. Sleep paralysis is much like waking up in your grave and being able to do nothing about it. Your body is prepared for sleep so you cannot move a muscle no matter how hard you try. You try to roll over enough to fall off the bed so you can awaken but that too is futile. You try to scream loudly but not a sound escapes your mouth except on occasion a brief random blurb may make it through. Your bed partner or anyone in listening distance will usually find it amusing or totally ignore you, dismissing your behavior as a topic for conversation at some later time. Meanwhile, you are laying there barely able to tremble despite using every ounce of physical effort you posses trying to signal them to shake the hell out of you so you can awaken from this torture. After a few years of experiencing this phenomena it becomes more so a period of dread than torture as you reach a semi conscious state of awareness of what is actually happening to you during the time it is happening. Fortunately, my dreams last night were about childhood friends, playground competition, and flying kites. The dreams were not especially pleasant but definitely were not nightmares. A nightmare would probably have pushed me over the edge if combined with the paralytic state which seemed to go on for hours. Unfortunately, there isn't a cure for sleep paralysis. Should you suffer from this disorder, like my cat and me, your best bet is to 1) never sleep alone and carefully and thoroughly 2) train your bed partner to not ignore the situation should they witness you shaking or talking in your sleep. Instruct them to 3) shake you or firmly 4) slap you immediately, and not only will you not be upset with them, you will  owe them all of your gratitude. A sound facial slap in this situation is not abuse or domestic violence but, in my opinion, a life saving maneuver and should your partner harbor any resentment for any past misdeed you may have performed against them they have your full permission and your blessing to right that wrong at this particular time. It will be therapeutic for them. Make sure to get it in writing and make sure you instruct them to give you the opportunity to awaken before popping you again, for that  would be bordering on abuse if they didn't. When you do awaken you will be so thankful for their action that you, in your semi-hypnotic stupor, will uncontrollably confess anything and everything you have kept secret from your partner. You then should be able to sleep with confidence and security of not being terrorized by sleep paralysis and your partner can be confident of your fidelity. In my never ending search for the metaphorical silver lining, here it must be that sleep paralysis could save your relationship. Tags: sleep paralysis, headoc

Nuvigil: A New Sleep Disorder Drug
    2007-07-14 23:54:09
It is evident that most sleepless people are in for a lot of problems and to turn towards sleep disorder medical transcriptions shows the need to address such problems. Companies such as Cephalon Inc. have been endlessly trying to develop ways to address the criteria of sleep disorder and seem to have done so with the introduction of Nuvigil, an improved formulation of modafinil. Nuvigil is an improved formulation of modafinil, the active pharmaceutical ingredient contained in Provigil — the company’s lead product. Provigil was approved by the FDA in 1998 to improve wakefulness. With the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this drug is something worth checking out. Hopefully it will also keep the leadership position of Cephalon in the area of wakefulness. cephalon inc, food and drug administration, How to sleep better, medical transcriptions, modafinil, nuvigil, provigil, Sleep Cures, Sleeping Pills, sleep disorder

From Hope for Those Who Want to Live a Life Without Anxiety"I have suffered from anxiety attacks for the past 50 years. Back then, little was known about how best to cope with it so Valium was prescribed. As time went by I attended self-help groups and stopped taking Valium.I was doing very well for about the past 25 years. Even having gone through some very rough times, I managed to be happy and keep a very positive attitude. Everything came crashing down when I was having my morning coffee and was watching TV on 9/11, in utter disbelief about what I was seeing. From then on, it was back to 50 years ago. I knew life would never be the same as we knew it.I went to counseling, but that was just a temporary band-aid for such a large problem. Then someone mentioned Reiki meetings.I was willing to try anything but medication. At the first Reiki meeting I attended, I knew it was just what would get me back on track. I only know of this one Reiki group that I look so forward to attending onc

    Generalized anxiety disorder symptoms
    2007-05-14 15:56:54
A lot of us have some kind of  worries in our lives at some of time which we do not spent a large amount of wasted time in pondering over them. However, there are others who constantly worry over anything and everything may be suffering from GAD otherwise known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Along with other types of anxiety disorders, people should consult with qualified medical practitioner and identify it correctly prior to receiving proper treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The sufferer of Generalized Anxiety Disorder will live in a chronic and exaggerated state of worry and tension most of the time. In some extreme situation, the emotions of GAD can arise without any provocative circumstances. Generalized Anxiety Disorder symptoms can also induce the sufferer to be always anticipating disaster. In this type of situation the source of the danger is somewhat difficult and hard to pinpoint. These are perhaps the early warning symptoms of GAD which includes others like

NCP Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Premenstrual Syndrome
    2007-05-14 03:36:00
DSM-IV Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (provided for further study) Recommended for further systematic clinical study and research, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (popularly called PMS) is characterized by multiple symptom clusters occurring during the menstrual cycle, becoming progressively disabling. Some research suggests these symptoms may be a delayed effect of hormonal changes earlier in the menstrual cycle, or the result of an independent cyclical mood disorder that is synchronized with the menstrual cycle. Although the physical symptoms produce discomfort, the mood change or premenstrual negative affect symptoms are often more distressing, interfering with familial, social, and work-related activities. The condition usually improves after the onset of menses; however, for some women, symptoms persist through and after menses. The symptoms cannot result solely from cyclic or environmental stress but may be enhanced by these stressors. This diagnosis is not used when the person is experiencing a late luteal phase exacerbation of another disorder, such as major depression, panic disorder, or dysthymia. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Although etiology is not understood, symptoms are believed to be related to the interaction of psychological, social, and biological factors. Underlying personality and psychiatric conditions contribute to how any particular individual deals with these physical problems. An individual’s past and present negative attitudes toward menstruation are likely to influence the symptomatology of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. Emotion is the result of complex interactions between hormonal changes and cognitive variables. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle are likely to increase the female’s susceptibility to negative psychological experiences rather than to cause such experiences. Biological Although not completely understood, it may be related to the alterations (fluctuations) in estrogen and progesterone and the

    NCP Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:32:00
DSM-IV 301.9 Personality disorder NOS Passive-Aggressive personality disorder (negativistic personality disorder)—provided for further study. This disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of passive resistance, expressed indirectly rather than directly, to demands for adequate social/occupational performance, with the individual viewing the future as negatively as they view the present. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics These clients are unaware that ongoing difficulties are the result of their own behaviors. They experience conscious hostility toward authority figures but do not connect their ownpassive-resistant behaviors with hostility or resentment. They do not trust others, are not assertive, are intentionally inefficient, and try to “get back” at others through aggravation. Anger and hostility are released through others, who become angry and may suffer because of the client’s inefficiencies. This disorder can lead to more serious psychological dysfunctions such as major depression, dysthymic disorder, and alcohol and other drug abuse/dependence. These behaviors, although not disturbing to the client, are disturbing to those in the environment who interact with the client. Therapy is not usually sought, but the client is generally referred for help by family members. Biological Personality disturbance is attributed to constitutional abnormalities. There may be a biological base to behavioral and emotional deviations, and researchers hope to demonstrate a correlation between chromosomal and neuronal abnormalities and a person’s behavior. Family Dynamics Theories of development implicate environmental factors occurring in the very early years of the child’s life. Feelings of rejection or inadequate nurturing by the primary caregiver result in anger that is then turned inward on the self. Depression is common. CLIENT ASSESSMENT DATA BASE Ego Integrity Feels cheated, unappreciated, misunderstood Chronically complains to others

    NCP Anti Social Personality Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:31:00
DSM-IV 301.7 Antisocial personality disorder “Sociopath” and “psychopath” are terms often used to describe the individual with antisocial personality. As deceit and manipulation are central features of the disorder, it is extremely difficult to treat. Imprisonment has been society’s major method for controlling the most dangerous behaviors. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Psychodynamically, this individual remains fixed in an earlier level of development. Because of parental rejection or indifference, needs for satisfaction and security remain unmet, and the ego is underdeveloped. Because of a lack of ego strength, behavior is id directed and results in the need for immediate gratification. An immature supergo allows this individual to pursue gratification, regardless of means and without experiencing feelings of guilt. Biological Genetic involvement has been implicated in studies that showed that individuals with antisocial personality, and their parents, showed excessive EEG abnormalities when these examinations were conducted on both groups. Some research suggests that a variant of the D4 dopamine receptor gene (D4DR) appears more frequently in individuals who report high levels of “novelty seeking.” People scoring high on this characteristic are often judged to be excitable, quick-tempered, and seek out thrilling sensations/situations—features associated with antisocial personality disorder. However, no clear effect on personality has been demonstrated at this time. (Despite genetic or environmental factors, sociopaths choose their lifestyle; therefore, it is up to them to choose to change it.) Family Dynamics Family functioning has been implicated as an important factor in determining whether or not an individual develops this disorder. The following circumstances may predispose to the disorder: absence of parental discipline (teaching/guidance), extreme poverty, removal from the home, growing up without parental figures of both sex

    NCP Gender Identity Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:25:00
DSM-IV GENDER IDENTITY DISORDERS 302.6 Gender identity disorder in children 302.85 Gender identity disorder in adolescents and adults (specify: sexually attracted to males/females/both/neither) 302.6 Gender identity disorder not otherwise specified (intersex conditions, androgen insensitivity syndrome, or congenital adrenal hyperplasia and gender dysphoria) 313.82 Identity problem (specific to sexual orientation and behavior) Sexuality is a product of one’s genetic identity, gender identity, gender role and sexual orientation. As all of these are independent components, there is a 4 3 4 interaction that can result in 16 distinct possibilities of sexual identity. In a society in which clear differences between the sexes is the expected norm, any individual challenging this dichotomy is deemed problematic. However, in the mental health arena, sexual orientation is a concern only when the individual experiences persistent and marked distress regarding uncertainty about issues relating to personal identity—in this case, sexual orientation and behavior. Consensual homosexuality in adults is no longer viewed as a mental disturbance. Homosexual individuals in general have no more psychopathology than heterosexuals, and when they do seek treatment it is for the same reasons as heterosexuals—psychiatric disorders (e.g., bipolar disorder, borderline personality), relationship problems, and stress. Therefore, it is important to avoid mistakenly attributing psychiatric symptoms to the individual’s sexual orientation. In gender identity disorder, the individual does not view himself or herself as homosexual; rather, there is a strong and persistent cross-gender identification and discomfort with one’s gender or a sense of inappropriateness in the assigned gender role exists (e.g., a male “trapped” in a female’s body). This perception results in clinically significant distress/functional impairments (e.g., social, occupational). In

    NCP Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:23:00
DSM-IV 309.81 Posttraumatic stress disorder (specify acute, chronic, or delayed onset) 308.3 Acute stress disorder An anxiety disorder resulting from exposure to a traumatic event in which the individual has experienced, witnessed, or been confronted with an event or events that involve actual or threatened death/serious injury or a threat to the physical integrity of the self or others. The individual’s response involved intense fear, helplessness, or horror. (A thorough physical examination should be done to rule out neurological organic problems.) Additionally, a newly recognized phenomenon is the development of PTSD-like symptoms in some individuals who have been involved over a long period of time in the treatment of (or living with) clients with PTSD. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The client’s ego has experienced a severe trauma, often perceived as a threat to physical integrity or self-concept. This results in severe anxiety, which is not controlled adequately by the ego and is manifested in symptomatic behavior. Because the ego is vulnerable, the superego may become punitive and cause the individual to assume guilt for traumatic occurrence; the id may assume dominance, resulting in impulsive, uncontrollable behavior. Biological (Refer to CP: Generalized Anxiety Disorder.) Some studies have revealed abnormalities in the storage, release, and elimination of catecholamines affecting function of the brain in the region of the locus coeruleus, amygdala, and hippocampus. Hypersensitivity in the locus coeruleus may lead to “learned helplessness.” The amygdala appears to be the storehouse for memories, while the hippocampus provides narrative coherence and a location in time and space. Hyperactivation in the amygdala may prevent the brain from making coherent sense of its memories resulting in the memories being stored as nightmares, flashbacks, and physical symptoms. Research is exploring the possibility of a genetic vulnerability including

    NCP Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:21:00
DSM-IV 300.3 Obsessive-compulsive disorder An obsession is an intrusive/inappropriate repetitive thought, impulse, or image that the individual recognizes as a product of his or her own mind but is unable to control. A compulsion is a repetitive urge that the individual feels driven to perform and cannot resist without great difficulty (severe anxiety). Most common obsessions are repetitive thoughts about contamination, repeated doubts, a need to have things in a specific order, aggressive or horrific impulses, or sexual imagery. The individual usually attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts or to neutralize them with some other thought or action (compulsion). ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Freud placed origin for obsessive-compulsive characteristics in the anal stage of development. The child is mastering bowel and bladder control at this developmental stage and derives pleasure from controlling his or her own body and indirectly the actions of others. Erikson’s comparable stage for this disorder is autonomy versus shame and doubt. The child learns that to be neat and tidy and to handle bodily wastes properly gains parental approval and to be messy brings criticism and rejection. The obsessional character develops the art of the need to obtain approval by being excessively tidy and controlled. Frequently the parents’ standards are too high for the child to meet, and the child continually is frustrated in attempts to please parents. The defensive mechanisms used in obsessive-compulsive behaviors are unconscious attempts by the client to protect the self from internal anxiety. The greater the anxiety, the more time and energy will be tied up in the completion of the client’s rituals. First, the client uses regression, a return to earlier methods of handling anxiety. Second, the obsessive thoughts are either devoid of feeling or are attached to anxiety. Thus, isolation is used. Third, the client’s overt attitude toward others is usually the o

    NCP Generalized Anxiety Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:20:00
DSM-IV 300.02 Generalized anxiety disorder Although some degree of anxiety is normal in life’s stresses, anxiety can be adaptive or maladaptive. Problems arise when the client has coping mechanisms that are inadequate to deal with the danger, which may be recognized or unrecognized. The essential feature of this inadequacy is unrealistic or excessive anxiety and worries about life circumstances. Anxiety disorders are the most common of all major groups of mental disorders in the United States, sharing comorbidity with major depression and substance abuse, increasing the client’s risk of suicide. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The Freudian view involves conflict between demands of the id and superego, with the ego serving as mediator. Anxiety occurs when the ego is not strong enough to resolve the conflict. Sullivanian theory states that fear of disapproval from the mothering figure is the basis for anxiety. Conditional love results in a fragile ego and lack of self-confidence. The individual with anxiety disorder has low self-esteem, fears failure, and is easily threatened. Dollard and Miller (1950) believe anxiety is a learned response based on an innate drive to avoid pain. Anxiety results from being faced with two competing drives or goals. Cognitive theory suggests that there is a disturbance in the central mechanism of cognition or information processing with the consequent disturbance in feeling and behavior. Anxiety is maintained by this distorted thinking with mistaken or dysfunctional appraisal of a situation. The individual feels vulnerable, and the distorted thinking results in a negative outcome. Biological Although biological and neurophysiological influences in the etiology of anxiety disorders have been investigated, no relationship has yet been established. However, there does seem to be a genetic influence with a high family incidence. The autonomic nervous system discharge that occurs in response to a frightening impulse and/or e

    NCP Delusional Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:13:00
DSM-IV 297.1 Delusional disorder Specific type: Erotomanic (delusions that another person of higher status is in love with the individual) Grandiose (delusions of inflated worth, power, knowledge, identity, or special relationship to a deity or famous person) Jealous (delusions that one’s sexual partner is unfaithful) Persecutory (delusions that one, or someone to whom one is close, is being malevolently treated in some way) Somatic (delusions that one has some physical defect or general medical condition) Mixed (delusions characteristic of more than one of the above types, but no one theme predominates) ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Emotional development is delayed because of a lack of maternal stimulation/attention. The infant is deprived of a sense of security and fails to establish basic trust. A fragile ego results in severely impaired self-esteem, a sense of loss of control, fear, and severe anxiety. A suspicious attitude toward others is manifested and may continue throughout life. Projection is the most common mechanism used as a defense against feelings. Biological A relatively strong familial pattern of involvement appears to be associated with these disorders. Individuals whose family members manifest symptoms of these disorders are at greater risk for development than the general population. Twin studies have also suggested genetic involvement. Family Dynamics Some theorists believe that paranoid persons had parents who were distant, rigid, demanding, and perfectionistic, engendering rage, a sense of exaggerated self-importance, and mistrust in the individual. The clients become vulnerable as adults because of this early experience. CLIENT ASSESSMENT DATA BASE Refer to CP: Schizophrenia for physical symptoms. Ego Integrity May present with severe anxiety; inability to relax, exaggeration of difficulties, being easily agitated Expresses feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, lack of acceptance, and trust of others Demonstrates

    NCP Schizoaffective Disorder
    2007-05-14 03:11:00
DSM-IV 295.70 Schizoaffective disorder This disorder emphasizes the temporal relationship of schizophrenic and mood symptoms and is used for conditions that meet the criteria for both schizophrenia and a mood disorder with psychotic symptoms lasting a minimum of 1 month. The clinical features must occur within a single uninterrupted period of illness (for some, this may be years or even decades) that is judged to last until the individual is completely recovered for a significant period of time, free of any significant symptoms of the disorder. In comparison with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder occurs more commonly in women than in men. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics Refer to CPs: Schizophrenia, Major Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. Biological Refer to CPs: Schizophrenia, Major Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. Recent studies suggest that schizoaffective disorder is a distinct syndrome resulting from a high genetic liability to both mood disorders and schizophrenia. Family Dynamics Refer to CPs: Schizophrenia, Major Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. CLIENT ASSESSMENT DATA BASE Neurosensory Depressed mood (at least 2 wks); manic or mixed mood (at least 1 wk) Pronounced manic and depressive features intermingled with schizophrenic features Delusions and hallucinations for at least 2 wks (in absence of prominent mood symptoms) Difficulty following a moving object with the eyes Teaching/Learning May report previous episode(s) and remission free of significant symptoms; usually begins in early adulthood (generally earlier than mood disorders) Absence of substance use or general medical conditions that could account for symptoms DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES Refer to CPs: Schizophrenia, Major Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. NURSING PRIORITIES 1. Provide protective environment; prevent injury. 2. Assist with self-care. 3. Promote interaction with others. 4. Identify resources available for assistance. 5. DSM-IV 313.81 Oppositional defiant disorder 312.9 Disruptive behavior disorder NOS A pattern of negativistic, hostile, and defiant behavior lasting at least 6 months, in which the child loses temper, argues with adults, often actively defies or refuses adult requests or rules, blames others, deliberately does annoying things, and swears or uses obscene language. This behavior creates significant impairment in academic/social functioning but does not meet the criteria for conduct disorder. (Disruptive behavior disorder NOS reflects clinical features that constitute the subthreshold for both oppositional defiant and conduct disorders.) ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The oppositional youth is fixed in the separation-individuation stage of development. The youth insists on autonomy by negative adaptive maneuvers in which he or she continually provokes adults or peers. As the youth develops internal controls, he or she will eventually grow out of these behaviors. Genetic/Biological Similar to the predisposition for conduct disorder, heredity contributes to individual temperament, frustration, tolerance, and the tendency to seek risks or disobey authority. The disorder may be gender-linked, as the incidence is higher in boys than in girls. Family Dynamics Familial and cultural norms may prohibit the degree of individual differentiation among the family members. Attempts to maintain conformity are met by negativism, disobedience, and quarrelsome defiance. Parenting skills are ineffective and/or inconsistent with reactive and emotionally charged interchanges between parent and child. Some parents interpret average or increased levels of developmental oppositionalism as hostility and as the child’s deliberate effort to be in control. If power and control are issues for parents, or if they exercise authority for their own needs, a power struggle can be established between the parents and the child that sets the stage for the development of oppositional defia

    NCP Conduct Disorder
    2007-05-14 02:38:00
DSM-IV 312.XX Conduct disorder 312.81 Childhood-onset type 312.82 Adolescent-onset type Conduct disorder is most distinguishable by the degree of repetitive and persistent violation of the basic rights of others. Common antisocial behaviors acted out in the home and school setting include physical aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, lying, and theft. There is a total disregard for age-appropriate social norms as the child purposely engages in criminals acts, truancy from school, and breaking curfew. The DSM-IV criteria rates the level of severity as mild, moderate, to severe. The greater the level of delinquency and frequency in early childhood, the greater the risk for chronic offending into adulthood. Other prognostic factors leading to the continuation of the disorder include age of onset and the variation in problem behaviors displayed in multiple settings. Co-morbid diagnoses often associated with this condition are hyperactivity, depression, and chemical abuse and dependence. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics According to psychoanalytical theory, these children are fixated in the separation-individuation phase of development. The mother figure projects her view of the child’s needs as an unrealistic demand on her. The child cannot solidify attachment with the maternal object and compensates for the mother’s narcissistic need for gratification by overidealizing the image of the mother. The child fails to build up identification and differentiation between self and others to support sufficient superego development. The id behavior is prominent. Biological Temperamental abnormalities have been observed in infants at birth in terms of excitability, attention span, and adaptability. Heredity influences such traits as the tendency to seek risks and obey authority. One possibility is the biological influence of heightened arousal in the CNS and abnormally high levels of testosterone, leading to aggression. Differences in the

NCP Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD
    2007-05-14 02:36:00
DSM-IV 314.00 ADHD predominantly inattentive type 314.01 ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type 314.01 ADHD combined type 314.9 ADHD NOS This disorder is associated with inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive behavior that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level. This behavior creates clinically significant impairment in social/academic functioning. Accurate diagnosis is difficult, as symptoms resemble depression, learning disabilities, or emotional problems. The diagnosis is made through extensive observation of the child’s behavior; however, contact with health professionals is limited and the child’s activity may be misleading during short office visits. Reports from parents and teachers are often used to make the diagnosis, and their observations may be distorted, as they assume a problem exists and often predetermine the diagnosis themselves. ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES Psychodynamics The child with this disorder has impaired ego development. Ego development is retarded and manifested impulsive behavior represents unchecked id impulses, as in severe temper tantrums. Repeated performance failure, failure to attend to social cues, and limited impulse control reinforce low self-esteem. Some theories suggest that the child is fixed in the symbiotic phase of development and has not differentiated self from mother. Genetic/Biological The disorder may be gender-linked as the incidence is higher in boys than in girls (3:1). ADHD is also more prevalent among children whose siblings have been diagnosed with the same disorder. Recent studies have established that the fathers of hyperactive children are more likely to be alcoholic or to have antisocial personality disorders. Affected children have shown the presence of subtle chromosomal changes and mild neurological deficits with irregular brain function including too little activity in the area that inhibits impulsiveness. Hyperactivity may result from fetal alcohol syndrome, congenital i

    Teenage Bipolar Disorder
    2007-05-07 06:57:00
Being a teenager is not easy. Adolescents feel all kinds of pressures — to do well in school, to be popular with peers, to gain the approval of parents, to make the team, to be cool. In addition, many teenagers have other special problems. For example, they may worry about a parent being out of work or the family's financial problems. Adolescents may be hurt or confused by their parents' divorce, or they may have to learn how to live with a parent's alcoholism or mental illness.Despite these pressures, it is important to remember that most teenagers develop into healthy adults. Children and teenagers with Bipolar Disorder have manic and/or depressive symptoms. Some may have mostly depression and others a combination of manic and depressive symptoms. Highs may alternate with lows.

More Than Mood Swings: Bipolar Disorder in Teens
    2007-05-07 06:03:00
Author:Christine HaranMedical Reviewer:Vikram Tarugu, MDParents are often exasperated by their moody teenagers. After all, teens are known to be irritable, to sleep a lot and to resist authority figures. So how can a concerned parent determine when a teenager is just being a typical teen and when their child has a mental illness such as bipolar disorder? Bipolar teenagers can have dramatic mood changes within a single day and may have different symptoms than adults. Below, Dr. Barbara Geller, a professor of psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis, discusses how to recognize and treat bipolar disorder in adolescents. What Is Bipolar Disorder? The specific definition for bipolar disorder includes certain symptoms that patients must have to make a diagnosis. Bipolar people have to experience both depressed and manic episodes. For example, to fit the depressed part, a teen would need to be sad, to lose enjoyment in usual activities, to have trouble sleeping and eating, to be guilt-r

    Nature Deficit Disorder
    2007-05-02 17:21:00
Just got a copy of the Book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder and started reading it today. It is reinforcing a lot of ideas I knew to be true, having grown up in forested seclusion, and helping me realize a whole skill set of which I was only vaguely conscious until recently. Will toss up a review upon completion (which at my current speed of reading might be one or two months unfortunately). In the meantime, here's what the web has to say:http://www.xanga.com/Pfeffy/445299279/long-time-to-write.htmlhttp://dir.salon.com/story/mwt/feature/2005/06/02/Louv/index.htmlhttp://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4665933http://www.edutopia.org/1629http://www.wbhm.org/News/2006/NatureDeficit.htmlhttp://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2006/03/30/louv/http://www.truthforce.info/?q=node/view/1175http://www.truthforce.info/?q=node/view/2186

Bee Colony Collapse Disorder in Hawaii
    2007-04-27 12:54:31
In the past week I’ve received several links from friends about the missing bees. The media continues to report on current research into the cause of the disappearance of bees from their hives around the world. Taiwan just announced the loss of over 10 million bees. The other day The New York Times reviewed various theories. One involves radiation from cell phone towers, and rumors abound as one might expect; people are blaming everything from terrorism to a ‘bee rapture’. (BTW, did you know the military is testing the use of bees for sniffing out bombs?) Yesterday a press release from the Army announced several pathogens had been found to be potential culprits. Some have found evidence of a fungus; in Hawaii, the news is centering on a harmful mite, and bee colonies are now quarantined to prevent its spread. More information on current research can be found here. What’s interesting is that while most of these articles claim Colony Collapse Disorder is yet to be found
