| Some Advanced Practice Nurses Earn More than Doctors | | 2008-08-15 20:02:46 | | By Jennifer Larson, contributorAdvanced practice nurses are unquestionably among the highest paid in the nursing workforce. The average nurse practitioner working full time in 2007 made over $80,000. But some advanced practice nurses make salaries well into the six-figures—more than some doctors. The median total compensation for a full-time CRNA in 2007 was $148,450. Just ten years ago, the average annual salary for a nurse practitioner in the United States hovered in the mid-$50,000 range. Over the course of the decade, the average salary inched upwards until it broke the $80,000 mark in 2007.And for some advanced practice nurses, their take-home pay is even higher than that. Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), who are among the highest-paid advanced practice nurses, routinely make well over $100,000 each year. That topic even generated an animated discussion on the Wall Street Journal’s Web site recently. The fact that some advanced practice nurses are making more | | By: angelite nurses | | |

| When Doctors Don’t Have All the Answers | | 2008-08-12 23:13:00 | | By Dena Rifkin, MDI recently ran into a colleague who was returning from an internal medicine review course. These expensive and elaborate affairs consist of a week or so of lectures, tips, and new techniques, usually taught by well-known academics. Many doctors take these courses before taking the medical board exam in their specialty, and some doctors repeat the course every few years, to keep up with new developments or prepare for recertification exams. To be “board-certified” in a specialty, doctors must take exams every 10 years, so I’ll be attending a course next week to review kidney diseases. A key part of the course is problem-solving. Just like when the audience votes in “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” the 400 doctors in the room press buttons to answer multiple-choice questions. The number of people who give each answer is displayed on a big screen. Read More

| Why fewer medical doctors are doing research | | 2008-08-07 21:55:47 | | The road from disease research to disease cure isn't usually a smooth one. One role which bridges the laboratory and the clinic is that of the "clinician-scientist" -- a doctor who understands disease both in the patient and in the Petri dish. Yet an editorial published in Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM), http://dmm.biologists.org, contends that clinician-scientists in the UK and elsewhere are not prospering, but rather are "under threat in a hostile environment."

| Big Doctors Appointment Today - Details on Clinical Stem Cell Trial | | 2008-07-17 08:41:00 | | So today I go to see if I qualify for a clinical trial that would involve a fairly non-invasive blood and bone marrow transplant for my Crohn's. UPDATE: I AM IN! I GET MY FIRST INFUSION IN TWO WEEKS. TODAY I DID A TB TEST, EKG, BLOODWORK, B12, AND A 1 HOUR INTERVIEW. I HAVE A CT SCAN TUESDAY AND AS LONG AS THAT SHOWS ACTIVE CROHNS I AM READY TO GO. I should qualify based on my lack of response to most other treatments. I think the details below are for the actual study I would be getting involved in. Right now, I have been under quite a bit of stress and am on the brink or at the beginning of a flare-up. I've been eating pretty light and eased off the drinking a bit in an effort to get in shape and keep my Crohn's at bay. I am so used to dealing with the pain by now (without the aid of painkillers for the past few weeks) that I don't even realize how much I actually hurt. | Doctors Say Vitamins Need Warning Labels | | 2008-07-11 10:47:00 | | Is taking high doses of vitamins the magic bullet for healthy eyes and many more health issues? Of course not. Newly released reports have shown that smokers who take high doses of beta carotene do have an increased risk of lung cancer. The report goes on to say many people take several different vitamins a day and have no idea how much of each ingredient they are getting. Here's what I read on Reuters Health:'Based on new research, smokers may want to check the beta-carotene content of any multivitamin supplements they are taking, especially if these supplements are promoted as being beneficial for eye health. There's strong evidence that high dose beta-carotene can boost smokers' lung cancer risk, but many multivitamins that contain large amounts of the nutrient carry no warning, Drs. Although nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen could be safer alternatives, they, too, have been liked to intestinal bleeding. Consider acupuncture instead. | 8 Drugs Doctors Say They Would Not Take | | 2008-05-30 10:09:00 | | I just read about these 8 drugs that doctors wouldn't take. Hmm, should we be taking them? Anyway, here's what Men's Health learned:Doctors count on the Physicians' Desk Reference to help them make smart prescribing decisions. Unfortunately, it seems some doctors rarely pull the PDR off the shelf. Or if they do crack it open, they don't stay versed on emerging research that may suddenly make a once-trusted treatment one to avoid. Worst case: You swallow something that has no business being inside your body.Of course, plenty of M.D.'s do know which prescription and over-the-counter drugs are duds, dangers, or both. So Men's Health asked them, "Which medications would you skip?" Their list is your second opinion. If you're on any of these meds, talk to your doctor. I know it's early but it is something to consider later on down the road. I think their case is extraordinary because they are both training to be physicians and are shouldering a huge amount of debt from medical school. I love how all these articles always paint doctors as these hard luck cases..."such are the lives of medical residents: med school graduates getting years of on-the-job training, putting in brutal hours for salaries that, on an hourly basis, work out to a little more than they could earn stocking the shelves at Costco." I actually read that the average resident makes 12/hr given the amount of hours they work relative to the pay. It doesn't really say why more than half of all older doctors polled wouldn't recommend medicine as a career even to their own children. Is it really that bad? Why are they so disgruntled about their jobs? Why are we trying so hard to get to a place that they are trying so hard to get out of? It is really making me think twice about whether to even pursue this. I wonder what jobs they would opt for instead of medicine? Are pharmaceutical companies making billions off of an infection that can be cured with your diet and lifestyle changes? You might be surprised what research is now showing about a UTI natural cure. Using Natural Health I grew up in America and I once knew what it felt like to hear the words, 'natural remedy'. Living in the west, we are finally hearing those words that were once taboo in most developed countries. Unfortunately, natural health has been given a bad reputation and it might have come about because of pharmaceutical companies. Think about what you do when you get sick! You go to the doctor and then you go to the pharmacy to get your medicine. But, less than a hundred years ago this was not the case. In fact, most doctors used natural remedies to cure patients. | What Doctors Don't Tell Diabetics About Fats And Carbs | | 2008-03-31 15:31:23 | | If you recently have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, chances are your nutritional advice has fallen into one of two mutually exclusive categories: 1. Eat fewer carbs. Your body turns almost all carbohydrates into glucose either quickly or slowly, so to get your blood sugar levels down, eat less carbohydrate. 2. Eat more carbs. You have diabetes because you are overfat, so replace the fat in your diet with carbohydrate. It's enough to make you wonder if doctors and nutritionists really know how to treat diabetes, but there is, despite what you may hear from true believers in one kind of diabetes diet or another, value in both approaches. The idea that diabetics should eat less carbohydrate makes inherent sense. Diabetes is a condition in which either the body is not making enough insulin or insulin does not work effectively. If you are not going to inject insulin or take drugs that sensitize cells to insulin or use medications that force the pancreas to produce more insulin, it ma | | By: Diabetes Treatment | | |

| Adult humor jokes-Country Doctors | | 2008-03-24 23:15:07 | | A young doctor had moved out to a small community to replace a doctor who was retiring. The older gent suggested the young one accompany him on his rounds so the community could become used to a new doctor. At the first house a woman complained, "I've been a little sick to my stomach." The older doctor said, "Well, you've probably been overdoing the fresh fruit. Why not cut back on the amount you've been eating and see if that does the trick?"As they left the younger man said, "You didn't even examine that woman. How'd you come to your diagnosis so quickly?""I didn't have to. You noticed I dropped my stethoscope on the floor in there? When I bent over to pick it up, I noticed a half dozen banana peels in the trash. That was what was probably making her sick.""Huh," the younger doctor said, "Pretty clever. I think I'll try that at the next house."Arriving at the next house, they spent several minutes talking with an elderly woman. | What Doctors Have To Say About Drugs | | 2008-03-24 10:49:00 | | If you have visited our blog more than once you know I'm against always using drugs at the drop of a hat. I believe in letting our body heal itself holistically through food, herbs and natural methods. Just a list has a great eye opening post about Quotes on drugs by MDs. I listed 4 here. "If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be bad for the fish and good for humanity" O.W. Holmes, (Prof. of Med. Harvard University)"Drugs never cure disease. They merely hush the voice of nature's protest, and pull down the danger signals she erects along the pathway of transgression. Any poison taken into the system has to be reckoned with later on even though it palliates present symptoms. Pain may disappear, but the patient is left in a worse condition, though unconscious of it at the time." Daniel. H. | Call The Doctors, Stat! | | 2008-03-10 10:11:19 | | I want to make a quick post about the Avalanche medical team before we let things go too far when it comes to criticism. I have to admit, we've given the medical team a lot of grief this season, especially for the Joe Sakic "it's a groin pull, oh wait, it's a major hernia" fiasco, not to mention the Kurt Sauer "it's whiplash, and uh, it's a concussion, too" incident. The Paul Stastny groin pull while rehabbing after an appendectomy didn't go over very well with us, either. And now, with Peter Forsberg out with a mysterious groin pull of his own, the temptation to lay into the Avalanche doctors and trainers gets even harder to resist. But, let's cut them just a bit of slack---if just for a second. The medical team, led by Dr. Andrew Parker (pictured doing his best Coach Q impersonation), an orthopedic surgeon with 20 years of experience (and no pending malpractice suits), are trained professionals and we're not. | More doctors! | | 2008-02-15 16:31:46 | | This morning found me at the doctor AGAIN! Justin had broken out in a horrible rash from head to toe. Turns out, he's allergic to penicillin! So he had to start on a whole new antibiotic. I also had Zachary checked for strep since he was funning a fever this morning, but it was negative. Everyone is well now, except for Justin's rash and tonsils, which still touch in the middle. Tomorrow we are going BACK to have Isaiah's stitches removed. No more doctors please! The rest of the day we spent at car dealerships because we might be getting a new van. Have you ever sat in car dealerships all day with 4 little boys while pregnant? I don't think I have to tell you what it's like.Needless to say, it's been a long day and I think I'll head to bed early. Goodnight! | | By: Homekeeping Heart | | |

| Depression in Young Doctors Tied to Medication Errors | | 2008-02-09 08:08:00 | | (HealthDay News) -- Medical residents who are depressed are about six times more likely to make medication errors than those who aren't depressed, says a study that looked a 123 pediatric residents at three children's hospitals in the United States.Researchers found that 20 percent of the residents were depressed, and 74 percent were burned out. During the study period, the residents made a total of 45 medications errors, and those who were depressed made 6.2 times more medication errors than those who weren't depressed. There didn't appear to be any link between higher medication error rates and burnout. The study was published online Feb. 7 in the British Medical Journal. These findings suggest that doctors' mental health may play a more significant role in patient safety than previously suspected, the study authors said. In addition, the high burnout rate among residents in this study -- consistent with other studies -- indicates that methods of training doctors may cause stress that | | By: Integrative Medicine (CAM) Blog | | |
