Jason Marquis (3-3, 5.02/1.66) vs. Brad Penny (5-7, 5.45/1.57)
The Cubs will try to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the year and in the process post their second winning road trip of the season tonight behind Jason Marquis. Lou Piniella's crew won the first two games of the west coast swing with solid victories over the Padres but have lost three out of the last four. Piniella called Saturday's game "pivotal" in his pre-game show and maybe the way the Cubs lost the game will serve as wake up call to a team that has struggled on the road.
Tonight is the last game of the season against the Dodgers, the Cubs have won 4 of the first 6 after winning only 2 of 7 a year ago....

Carlos Zambrano (8-1, 2.51/1.22) vs. Derek Lowe (3-5, 4.17/1.33)
Lou Piniella's crew will try to get back on track behind Carlos Zambrano in front of a nationally televised audience this afternoon. The Cubs need their ace to step up today, throw strikes, keep his pitch count low and give his team a chance to figure out how to plate runs against Derek Lowe. The Dodgers' sinkerballer is back on track, after a horrible start to the year, and the Cubs must be patient and make him work. If the offense uses the same approach as it did against Lowe back on May 28th....it could be a short game with more zeroes on the scoreboard.

For the Chicago Cubs, it's the baby of the rotation- Sean Gallagher. But this is no normal seven lb., 9 oz. baby. This is a 6-2, 235 lb. baby that throws krazybombs at your face.
Sean's last start was June 1 against Colorado, where he only pitched 2 and 2/3rds innings, letting up 3 runs and 6 hits. Of course, he also struck out 8 batters and walked no one. I'd like that to continue.
Sean is a Capricorn, and his horoscope is:

Sean Gallagher (3-1, 4.55/1.33) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (2-5, 3.93/1.38)
The Cubs will look to secure a winning road trip tonight behind Sean Gallagher. Lou Piniella's young right-hander is coming of a solid win in his last start and has earned a spot in the rotation with his last two outings. Tonight is a rematch from game two of the series in Wrigley on the cold night following Memorial Day. The offense will have the challenge of figuring out Hiroki Kuroda early....and not wait until the 7th inning.
Geovany Soto was nominated for May's MLB Rookie of the Month award. Soto won the honor sponsored by Gillette for April. The CCO was asked to remind our readers to go and vote for Soto (click here to vote) before June 8th.

The Cubs will look to get back in the win column tonight in the first of four against Joe Torre and the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. The first game of the series features a rematch of the game on Memorial Day at Wrigley. Ryan Dempster will look for his first road win of the season and first career victory at Dodger Stadium while Chad Billingsley will try to continue his scoreless innings streak on the mound. The last runs Billingsley allowed was off the bat of Derrek Lee in a 3-1 loss to the Cubs on May 26th.

Let's hope the Dodgers don't have home umps like this tonight.
Well, not really. I lived there (Hermosa Beach) for three years as a child, and all I remember was smog and lots of traffic.
(And yes, I know the above clip features the Angels, not the Dodgers, but it's still funny as hell. Especially the third strike call. Frank Drebin will forever be the man.)
Anyway, after the Padres decided to finally win a game (bastards!), the Cubs make the in-state trek to the City of Angels, hoping to start a whole new winning streak. The awesomeness that is Ryan Dempster hits the mound tonight against Chad Billingsley in a rematch of a game May 26, which the Cubs won 3-1. Both pitchers did pretty well in that game, Billingsley struck out seven in the loss. A replay of the final would be OK by me, especially since the Cards already won the first game of their doubleheader today.

Lou Piniella's crew completed the 3-game sweep of the Dodgers with a dramatic comeback in the 9th and a walk off single by Alfonso Soriano in the 10th inning. With the Cubs down 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th, Ryan Theriot walked to start the rally. After Derrek Lee flied out, Aramis Ramirez put together an impressive at bat against Dodgers' closer Takashi Saito. Saito ended up walking Ramirez, only the 7th free pass he has allowed all year. With the tying run in scoring position, Kosuke Fukudome reached on an infield single to load the bases. James Loney made a great play to keep Fukudome's grounder from leaving the infield but Saito failed to touch the bag. On a 3-2 pitch from Saito, Geovany Soto drove in his 36th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to right. Theriot scored to tie the game.

Derrek Lee has hit Lowe really well in his 22 at-bats, but other than that, no Cubs player with more than 10 plate appearances has done very well against Lowe. It’s too bad Andruw Jones and Rafael Furcal are on the DL. They’re a combined 6-43 with 3 doubles, one home run (the only home run hit by any Dodger against Zambrano). No Dodger with 10 plate appearances or more has done anything with Zambrano.

I'm not giving this up. No one is. Why the hell is Edmonds still on this team? Learning curve? Give me a break. He's not going to get better. Probably only worse. Seriously, the guy has an OBP of .244! That's pretty tough to do.
I'll reiterate this once more: this is the first, and perhaps only time the Cubs blogosphere has ever agreed on something. Which means a lot, if you peruse over the different blogs. With Tuesday's win, Lou Piniella's crew won their first series since taking 2 of 3 from the Pirates on the last homestand. The Cubs will attempt to sweep the series tonight against the Dodgers behind their ace, Carlos Zambrano. The last time Zambrano faced the Dodgers at Wrigley, he ran through Mike Quade's stop sign, imploded on the mound and left to a chorus of boos in the 5th inning. Zambrano has been a different pitcher since that Labor Day afternoon at the Friendly Confines. Big Z must bring his A-game today while the Cubs' offense tries to plate runs against Derek Lowe.

Something Inspirational Should Go Here
Dodgers play the Cubs on ESPN, with Julie and Max Jr. in attendance. Other than that, I have little to say, so you get fun facts:
Fukudome will face a pitcher from Japan (Hiroki Kuroda) for the first time in the major leagues
On that last note, Kuroda and Fukudome were teammates in the 2004 Summer Olympics, where they helped lead Japan to the bronze medal
The Cubs are 20-8 at home this year
Monday's one-run effort was the 10th time this season the Dodgers had scored a run or fewer
Luis Gonzalez becomes only the second player in Japanese baseball history to be suspended for failing a drug test (I didn't say they were all Cubs-Dodgers fun facts)
Scoop Jackson of ESPN says that Soriano is back and that "it's Alfonso Soriano's World Series to lose." As you may note, this was written five days ago. The LCI and fielding...well...difficulties...show that ol' Scoop shouldn't place any large bets any time soon.

The Cubs will look for their first back-to-back wins since April 14th and 15th tonight behind Sean Gallagher. The Cubs have an 8-8-1 series record this season, 7-2 at home and Lou Piniella's crew has won the first game of the last 6 series they've played. The win on Monday extended that streak and kept the Cubs, once again, from becoming the only team in baseball to not have lost 3 games in a row this year.
The Cubs will get their first look tonight at Hiroki Kuroda and Sean Gallagher will attempt to earn his second career win under much different weather conditions than Monday. The forecast is calling for cooler temperatures with a high of only 55 expected in Chicago on Tuesday.

Happy Memorial Day from everyone here at the CCO.... The Cubs will try to avoid their first three game losing streak of the season today behind Ryan Dempster. Lou Piniella's crew is coming off a very disappointing road trip, posting just 2 wins in 6 games. They could have easily won the 4 they lost....
The Cubs will face the Dodgers for the first time with Joe Torre calling the shots. The longtime Yankee manager, and future member of Baseball's Hall of Fame, switched coasts last winter and was handed a very talented roster. The Cubs will not have the problem of slowing down Rafael Furcal this week but will see Blake DeWitt for the first time....plus they will have the task today of beating Chad Billingsley in his first start at Wrigley.

Don’t be surprised if former Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez follows, which is just exactly what the Dodgers need.If the Dodgers had a black hole last year (besides pitching injuries), it was third base. And A-Rod is only the best in the business at that position, which could make the Dodgers a contender in 2008.Already, the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks have clearly surpassed the Padres. If the Dodgers sign A-Rod, the Padres could be staring fourth-place in the face next season. The Padres already need a second baseman, (most likely) a center fielder if/when Mike Cameron leaves in free agency, and a right fielder. As much as I hate seeing a young, promising pitcher like Sean Marshall have his place in the rotation skipped, at this point, we might as well throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Why Steve Trachsel has to be included in the list of things we throw at the wall, I'm not sure. Hendry's first clue in this one should have been that Trachsel was playing for Baltimore. Jim, you NEVER EVER get anyone from Baltimore; that's where shitty ex-Cubs go to be euthanized.
The thing that amuses me about this situation is this: with all the things going wrong on this team, Lou has decided that Sean Marshall is the problem.

The Dodgers come to town today as the start of a big four-game series. This is one of the few teams the Cubs play during the remaining stretch of games that has a winning record, so getting at least a split here is vital. Three out of four would be superb.
Today could have been a potential Cy Young pitching matchup. I say could have been because, well, frankly, Carlos Zambrano (14-11, 4.06 ERA) hasn't been doing great lately, when the Cubs have needed him most. He has lost four straight decisions, and the Cubs have lost five straight games in which he has started. This would be a great time for him to turn it around. I've tried to figure this out, but can't. Z is streaky, and hopefully a good one gets started today.

The developer and construction tycoon first listed the 18,000 square foot three-story, eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom Brookline mansion for $22 million. The house sits on nearly three acres surrounded by multimillion-dollar homes, but most $10 million or more below the most recent asking price of $15.75 million.

Fourteen losses in the last 18.Shutout twice in a row; three times in the last four games. The Dodgers is dead … or are they?Remember last season. This is the same team that lost 13 of 14 coming out of the All-Star break, then won 15 of its next 16.Can the Dodgers do it again? The odds don’t seem likely. They have fallen into a third-place tie with Colorado, four games behind NL West-leading Arizona. They are three games behind the second-place Padres.“The good thing is, it's August 7 and ask anybody in here, we haven't played our best baseball all year,” losing pitcher Mark Hendrickson told Dodgers.com last night. “Hopefully, we can turn it around and pick up the morale. | | "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush" | | 2007-07-15 00:26:00 | | This past week on HBO, a documentary film debuted called "Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush." I didn't get a chance to see it during the week, as I was busy with the Red Sox games and other assorted things. But earlier today, I had a chance to see it. I'm really glad I did. It is simply one of the best documentaries ever made about baseball. As many of you know, I am a descendant of Brooklyn Dodger fans. Both my parents, my aunts and uncles, as well as my grandparents, were loyal fans. I knew this was a film I had to check out. As I write this, I live just ten minutes on the subway from where Ebbets Field once stood. (My dad saw the film the night it debuted, and said it was very well-made.)"Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush," narrated wonderfully by Liev Schreiber, is a history of one of baseball's most beloved teams, but it is centered on the years 1947-1957, the teams that were nicknamed "The Boys of Summer." | | Did Dodgers kick Broxton off the bus? | | 2007-06-11 18:38:00 | | You’ve heard of people throwing teammates under the bus, but how about throwing somebody off the bus?According to eyewitnesses, that’s what happened to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton after he blew a save last Thursday in San Diego. The situation: Broxton allowed five runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Padres scored an unlikely 6-5 win over the Dodgers.Later, as Broxton approached the bus, some teammates took note.“They started shaking their fingers at him as if to say ‘no,’” said an eyewitness. “Then they closed the door and the bus took off.”Broxton then had to hail a cab for the long ride home to Los Angeles, witnesses said. He wasn’t far behind teammates Nomar Garciaparra and Luis Gonzalez, who rode home in the comfort of a limo.See if Broxton ever blows a four-run lead again! | | By: San Diego Sporting
| | Padres care more about series than Dodgers | | 2007-06-05 18:21:00 | | The Padres are taking this much more seriously than the Los Angeles Dodgers.Starting tonight, the teams play a three-game series at Petco Park. The Padres are pitching their top three starters. In turn, the Dodgers are going with their Nos. 3-5 starters.Coincidence?Yes and no.San Diego rearranged its rotation partly so that ace Jake Peavy will pitch the third game of the series. He follows Chris Young and Greg Maddux. In the series opener, Los Angeles is pitching Jason Schmidt, who traditionally gets beat up by the Padres. That’s the same Schmidt who is coming off the disabled list. The Dodgers could have pitched Schmidt last night in Pittsburgh and moved ace Derek Lowe back a day to face the Padres. And, yes, Lowe is a Padre killer. On pitching match-ups alone, the Padres appear more interested in focusing specifically on this one series. We’ll find out which team is using the best strategy over the next three days. | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |

1. Second Guessing
It’s been a good day for the armchair managers. Let’s see:
Lou pulls Hill, who has thrown 66 pitches in 6 shutout innings, so that Ward can pinch-hit with a runner on second and two outs in a 0-0 game. Doesn’t work.
Lou asked Barrett, hitting fourth and with no sac. bunts on the year, to bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out in a 1-0 game in the eighth. Doesn’t work.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, Lou pinch hits Aramis Ramirez for the hot-hitting Pagan, a move that requires Jones to enter the game as a defensive replacement. Doesn’t work.
Lou pulls Wuertz, after an effective seventh, for Eyre, who hasn’t pitched in a week, to start the eighth. Doesn’t work. (Eyre gives up HR to Ethier, | | By: The Cub Reporter

Well, we're coming to the end of this road trip. And the reason Sir Flava Flav is gracing this thread is because the Cubs are playing at yet another weird time, at least for us East Coast folk. First it was three straight games at 10:05 p.m., then the last three with L.A. have been: 10:40; 3:55 and today's at 4:10. I'll be happy when the Cubs get back to their "normal" daytime games at home with a night game thrown in here and there.
As for today's matchup, this is a biggie. With a win, the Cubs can make this a 3-3 road trip, which, with all the drama that's gone on in the last week, would seem like 6-0. It also would be a good boost for the team, which has to catch an immediate flight cross-country back home, turn around and play Florida tomorrow afternoon. Expect major jet lag.
Today's starter: King Richard, who, in the last few starts has been Poor Richard. Hill needs a good outing to get back on track. If not, maybe he'll stay out in L.A. and try to get an acting gig.

| | Gamethread:5/26: Cubs vs Dodgers: Gamethread of the Week 2:55 CST | | 2007-05-26 17:30:00 | | Today, our beloved Cubbies will take on the LA Dodgers in game two of a three game set. As this is being written even before game one is being played I cannot tell you if we won game one or not, all I know is that game 2 will feature Carlos Zambrano he of the meltiest of meltdowns versus Mark Hendrickson,he of the suckiest of the sucky.
After all of the debate whether Carlos is hurt, (I think he is) or whether his arm angle is just a mess, (his mechanics have been slipping slowly out of control since 2005), there are one of two ways to go here. Either Carlos can settle down and have the type of brillant summer that he had last year, or Carlos can continue pitching the way he is now and end up on a disabled list near you.

Things to take from this game:
1. The Magnificent Seventh
It isn’t just that we came back from a 5-1 deficit with a seven run outburst. It’s how we did it. Seemingly every hit this inning was opposite-field on controlled swings and purposefull at-bats. It was easily the most enjoyable half inning of Cubs offense all year.
2. The Execrable Eighth.
It was followed by the most frustrating inning all year. Wuertz got pulled after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, for Howry. Howry gave up three straight line drives, and looked pretty frustrated with himself upon exiting for Ohman. Ohman faced one batter, gave up a hit, and in came Guzman who gave up the lead. Five straight hits, total, to start the inning.
3. Take Jeff Kent. Please.

Alyssa Milano has a blog
In this post I've highlighted, she talks about steroids, somehow comparing it to Botox. If you can get past silly stuff like that, it's kind of a decent blog. It was made to promote her femaIe baseball clothing line (called "Touch"), which was a brilliant idea. We need more females wearing baseball stuff! At least I think so. Overall, more female baseball fans are needed. Maybe, even in Charlotte. Just sayin'.
I think it's cool she writes it herself, and you can tell she's a Dodger fan. Plus, since I grew up with "Who's The Boss" I may or may not have had a crush on her in my pre-teen years. She also helped ruin the career of Carl Pavano, but that's neither here or there. (Alyssa, I kid! Call me). Anyhoo, sorry sweetheart, but your Boys in Blue are going to get taken down by my Boys in Blue. At least two out of three (please? That would at least salvage the trip at 3-3).

| | Sheriff's clamp on dodgers | | 2006-09-01 08:31:00 | | On June 18, I posted about the Denver Boot. Coincidently on that same day tough new wheel-clamping laws came into force in Victoria on 18th August, and so now Sheriff's officers patrol car parks across the state on the look out for drivers with unpaid fines for traffic offences, parking tickets, public transport fare evasion and other offences. Officers now carry Eftpos machines so fine dodgers can pay their dues on the spot.
Fine dodgers were given warnings over the last month that their cars would be clamped if they did not pay up. The Government sees wheel clamping as one way to get the money owed. Sheriff's officers are now able to check if a driver has unpaid fines through registration details and the new laws give officers the power to keep wheel clamps on cars until fines are paid. Furthermore, defaulters also face driver's licence and motor vehicle registration suspension, payments deducted directly from your wages and even sale of property.
