Natural Food Products Doesn't Mean Safe - With Dogs
    2008-07-10 10:13:00
With so many people trying to make healthier choices sales of sugar-free sweets are on the rise. Caution -- gum, candies and other foods made with xylitol can make your pets ill. Dogs who’ve ingested xylitol may develop a sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. Data from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) also shows a link between xylitol ingestion and liver failure in dogs.My eyes and ears are always open for toxins in food and everyday used items. This has been a way of life for me for the past 30 years with my pets. After all, the animals can't read and don't know enough spoken words to understand news stories about what to eat or what is dangerous. By the way the picture is me with my best dog friend Tara. One thing many pet lovers might not think about is xylitol, a popular sweetener used in sugar-free gums, mints and oral care products. Xylitol is an all-natural sugar substitute derived from beets, birch tree bark, cornc

This Wedding is for the Dogs!
    2008-07-09 16:32:00
Love This PageAs couples attempt to make their wedding ceremonies more personal, many brides and grooms are opting to include pets on their special day. I suppose this shouldn’t be too surprising. It’s no secret that Americans are obsessed with our pets. We buy expensive gourmet food for them, we put them in day care while we’re at work, we have special hotels for them when we vacation, we buy them hygiene products and clothing, we take them to spas for grooming, we buy them health insurance, we spend millions of dollars on toys to entertain them, and when they die, we lay them to rest in special cemeteries. For so many people, their pets are more than creatures they own – they are part of the family and it’s only natural to want to include members of your family in monumental life events such as a wedding.I have two cats that I love and adore. They are a part of our family, but the idea of draping them in lace and trying to incorporate them into a wedding ceremony is ridicu

Cats know how to obtain food without labor, shelter without confinement, and love without penalties. - W. L. George--> Krusty, Kristy and mummyYou have already met the Gods, now it's time to meet the Dogs. "He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfo

Is It Time to Start Buying Some Dogs?
    2008-06-26 22:57:00
We all know the motto that tells us to invest when everyone else is fearful and to sell when everyone else is optimistic. We also know that over time, the market's tendency is to go up, not down. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of our three principal market barometers, is down around levels unseen since September 2006.The erstwhile popular Dogs of the Dow strategy has averaged an annual return of 17.7% from the period 1973 through 2006. It hasn't done as well the last couple of years, but all investing strategies have their bad years. For those who have never heard of it, the strategy is very simple. At the start of the year, find and buy the ten highest yielding DJIA stocks (the dogs as they're called). Keep them for a year and a day, find the new list of the highest yielding DJIA stocks, and repeat. The idea is that you can evaluate large cap stocks based on their yields. The larger the yield, the more likely it is that the market is undervaluing the stock. Here are the Dogs of

    Really funny jokes-Guide dogs
    2008-06-09 02:06:00
A man is walking his dog in a park when he meets another man, also walking his dog. They say hello and start to talk about their dogs. One has a chihuahua and the other a doberman. They decide to rest for coffee and they walk into a local cafe. Upon seeing a 'no animals allowed' sign, the man with the doberman says"Don't worry, put on these dark glasses. We'll pretend these are our guide dogs".So the men do this and go into the cafe. When the waiter comes over, he says to the man with the doberman "I'm sorry sir, but we do not allow animals in here. You'll have to take that dog outside.""But this is my guide dog," says the man."A doberman! A doberman isn't a guide dog," says the waiter."Actually, a doberman is particularly suited to being a guide dog nowadays. They provide lots of security and they are very well mannered.""Oh, alright then," says the waiter, and then he notices the other dog. "Excuse me sir, but you can't have that dog in here," he says to the other man."Oh yes I can, t

Lyme Disease In Dogs Is A Serious Matter
    2008-06-09 01:46:00
Lyme disease is caused by an organism known as a spirochete, which is a coiled rod-shaped bacterium and named Borrelia burgdorferi. It is passed to dogs and people by deer ticks carrying the infection; the ticks get the infection from the white-footed mouse, which acts as a carrier. The only way a tick can transmit the bacteria is to remain attached to the animal's skin for one to two days. Unfortunately, these ticks are very small and easily can go unnoticed. Lyme disease in dogs has been found worldwide and in ancient Chinese medical literature they actually describe a syndrome very similar to Lyme disease, thousands of years before Lyme , Connecticut was named. In the United States , more than 90% of the cases occur in the Northeast, with California and Mississippi second. Lyme disease in dogs is fairly common, but rarely seen in cats, although some cats have been infected with it.The main clinical signs of Lyme disease in dogs include a sudden yet recurring lameness that may shift

Why Dogs Are Better Pets Than Cats
    2008-06-07 06:24:01
    1. Dogs will tilt their heads and try to understand every word you say. Cats will ignore you and take a nap.2. Cats look silly on a leash.3. When you come home from work, your dog will be happy and lick your face. Cats will still be mad at you for leaving in the first place.4. Dogs will give you unconditional love until the day they die. Cats will make you pay for every mistake you've ever made since the day you were born.5. A dog knows when you're sad. And he'll try to comfort you. Cats don't care how you feel, as long as you remember where the can opener is.6. Dogs will bring you your slippers. Cats will drop a dead mouse in your slippers.7. When you take them for a ride, dogs will sit on the seat next to you. Cats have to have their own private basket, or they won't go at all.8. Dogs will come when you call them. And they'll be happy. Cats will have someone take a message and get back to you.9. Dogs will play fetch with you all day long. The only thing cats will lay with all day lon

    Why Dogs Burrow
    2008-05-10 01:21:33
Does your dog like to burrow under the covers? There is actually an explanation of why according to an MSN.com article in their dog central section.Dogs are denning animals, they love small spaces. In the same way that humans like to fluff up their pillows before settling in for the night, some dogs like to create comfy beds and hide under clothes and sheets to make themselves feel safe, warm and comfortable. All breeds may do this, but terriers, hounds and huskies are more predisposed to burrowing than others. There’s no downside or risk to letting your dog burrow, unless you don’t want dog hair under the covers. A separate dog bed might be handy to keep the hair out of yours. An additional bonus of your dog having the instinct to burrow is that it can make crate training easier, since being in a crate can mimic that denlike environment. So the next the time your dog wants to get under your covers, just know that she's just trying to find a safe place to sleep.

Researchers Seek to Demystify the Metabolic Magic of Sled Dogs
    2008-05-05 22:10:10
By DOUGLAS ROBSON : When humans engage in highly strenuous exercise day after day, they start to metabolize the body’s reserves, depleting glycogen and fat stores. When cells run out of energy, a result is fatigue, and exercise grinds to a halt until those sources are replenished. Dogs are different, in particular the sled dogs that [...]

Chinese authorities bring out the drug-sniffing dogs for Mazda Taiki

So you're a customs officer in Beijing, and out of the trailer you're inspecting is hauled a... a what? The Japanese people who have accompanied it, who claim to be from Mazda, also claim that it's a concept car. Frankly, it could also be a submarine, or it might eat people -- or it could be an elaborate ruse for hauling drugs or bombs. So the officials at Beijing airport let the dogs out to sniff for, well, probably everything. Finding nothing, the Taiki was allowed to roll on to the Beijing Auto Show. Nothing in there but coffee grounds, sir, just coffee...[Source: The Tycho][Concept Cars, China, Etc., Mazda, concept, drug, drugs, mazda, mazda taiki concept, MazdaTaikiConcept, taiki]

    Dogs
    2008-04-19 23:03:00
You can't beat the loyalty of a dog, unless you count MY dog, who decided a few months ago that she'd rather live with the neighbors. She sits out in their front yard all day, and when I drive past, she stares at me. I swear she's laughing! After I took her in off the street, allowed her to birth EIGHT puppies in my dining room, then got her spayed, bathed, and trained... this is the thanks I get? I guess that's why they call a dog MAN's best friend, because she sure doesn't care much for this woman. Be that as it may (whatever that means, I've used that phrase all my life), people love their dogs. I've had a few good dogs in my life, so I know they exist. Besides, there's enough dogs on the net to convince anyone they must be worthwhile. At least, some of them. Math Dog 100 Greatest Dogs of Pop Culture history. Puppy monorail. (Thanks, Kirby!) These dogs have a nose for doo-doo
    2008-04-12 05:07:45
Dogs possess such an extraordinary sense of smell that they can distinguish among the feces of 18 species at once, making them ideal tracking aids for conservation biologists hoping to cover a lot of ground. Or water.Beyond helping document grizzly and black bear behavior in Alberta’s vast Jasper National Park, the dogs have located floating feces from endangered North Atlantic right whales in Canada’s Bay of Fundy and from the Pacific Northwest’s declining orca population. Remarkably, some of the poop snoopers perched on the bows of research vessels have tracked down whale scat more than one nautical mile away.Among the growing number of scat-detection dogs used to track wildlife by land or by sea, the canines employed by the University of Washington’s Center for Conservation Biology are showing that no technology can yet outdo their know-how for doo-doo.Samuel Wasser, the center’s director, said feces is the easiest part of an animal to collect and a “treasure trove” of

Should you take your dogs on vacation?
    2008-03-05 11:04:22
As I sat outside enjoying yet another beautiful San Diego sunrise, I can't help but think about the little boys. Wouldn't they have loved a break from the harsh, cold winter? We stay with our brother and sister-in-law who have a gated compound. I think of how the dogs would run their hearts out on the lush, green grass. How little Rocki, who we suspect is part pig, would be in his glory digging in the tropical foliage. How Bruiser, our little sun worshipper, would park himself by the pool and sun himself to his heart's content. We have often toyed with bringing them but I have many reservations about putting them in a cage on a plane. My misgivings were given more weight when I saw a woman in the Minneapolis airport with her little white Maltese. The poor thing was so scared it shook as she dragged it on it's leash past the hordes of people in the security lineup. I read of a dog dying on one of the airlines and now they don't allow pets anymore. However, if we drove down here, we could

    China, Stop Eating Dogs!
    2008-02-19 16:15:04
It’s official. China has pissed me off. Not only are they trying to kill our dogs with poison laden “food”, but it seems that they also have an appetite for fido. I understand the whole “culture” difference argument, but seriously. Dogs were never intended to be used as food for humans. How could anyone walk [...]

The movies have gone to the dogs
    2008-02-11 14:38:52
Ever notice how a demand for something goes up when it is featured in a movie? Dogs are no exception to this unwritten rule. Take for example the Lassie phenomenon. There was a marked rise in the popularity of the Collie breed when Lassie stared to appear on the big screen. The next big demand dog breed was the German shepherd and we have Roy Rodger’s "Bullet" to thank for that. Around the same

Book Review - Yiddish for Dogs: Chutzpah, Feh!, Kibbitz, and More: Every Word Your Canine Needs to Know
    2008-02-08 11:16:00
And another of my BlogCritics book reviews...I grew up in a New York Eastern European Jewish household where Yiddish was spoken interchangeably with English. We never ate chicken gizzards, and I would pale at the thought of eating stomach, but I loved the "pupick". When something was bad a simple "Oy!" would do, but if you heard "Oy vay is mir" you knew things were really bad. Instead of glowing with joy we would "kvell". And people were never crazy, just "mishugeneh".So much Yiddish has entered into typical American English vocabulary that it makes sense that our dogs, even strays from a "goy" background, would still understand the words. I mean, what dog likes to "shlep" her owners around? And who wants only kibble when there is a "mishmash" of food in the trash? Why be on a diet when we can "fress"? And how can a dog not start barking or "plotzing" when lots of people come over the house? This is a short picture book written from the viewpoint of dogs. So we have fat fireplug

    Puppies to Dogs
    2008-02-05 19:59:00
Referred to none other than their puppies, well built athletes like to call their arm muscles such. Today those puppies are growing up.Crazyness will get you nowhere in life and the same with muscles building. Bench pressing stresses the muscle tissue beyond its tolerance and creates fatigue in the body. Dumbell weights however have greater accessibility and unlike gym memberships do not have vicious price tags that rival a low-class motor vehicle. Dumbells seem straightforward enough, but there is more than meets the eye. Technical stuff-f-f: Biceps (front of arm) allow us to pull (lift a dumbell towards our shoulder). Triceps (back of arm) allow us to push (relieve the pulling and drop the dumbell to our sides). We want an exercise that workouts both of these because one without the other is rather useless. Which is why dumbells are stupendous. Reps of 15-30 will do if you are planning on growing a Shar Peis (rolly dog) but for those wanting to build Pitbulls, you are going to have t

6 Basic Tips for Training your Dogs.
    2008-01-16 19:36:00
How you go about basic dog training depends on several things. You want to take into consideration what kind of dog it is, what dog behavior training you are trying to accomplish, and how old the dog is. But it is important to note that it is never too late to teach a dog a new trick. Here are 6 basic dog training tips to keep in mind.1) PositiveThe key thing to remember is that this is a fun process to teach your dog something new. Therefore, make sure to constantly offer positive affirmations in the form of verbal praise and treats. Whenever the dog does something correctly make sure they know it.2) PatienceIt can be difficult being patient but it is a process that is not going to happen in one session. You have to be willing to give it time and over a period of training sessions your dog will learn. Your dog will pick up on your emotions so hide those feelings of anxiety and anger and keep it positive.3) ConsistencyConsistency is vital with dog behavior training. Training your dog o

What Your Dogs Know That You Don't
    2008-01-16 19:03:04
My dogs are well trained and do not mess in the house. So imagine my surprise one morning when I woke up and found markings throughout the kitchen. I brought both of them over, made them sniff the offending area, and then scolded them roundly. Bruiser hung his head...Rocki wagged his tail and tried to jump up for me to hug him. I was about to melt and so I walked away and thought that was the end of it.The next morning...the same thing...markings throughout the kitchen and family room. I was at my wits end. I went through the routine again with them, only I spoke louder.Later that day, I went into the basement to do the laundry and saw something scurry in my path. It was too big to be a spider or cricket so I called my husband and he helped me look around. We found evidence of a little field mouse. My husband went to the store, bought a mouse trap and we put peanut butter on it and set it out. The next morning when we came down, the mouse trap was intact, but the peanut butter was gone. So much for the mouse trap. We went out and bought one of those trays filled with a sticky substance that traps the mouse. Finally, the next morning, we had him and threw him away. For the next week, all was well. No markings in the house. And then, one morning, I saw it. Markings. This time, I went straight into the basement, set another trap and went back up to clean the markings. Later that evening, we had caught another little field mouse. We did discover that the mice were coming in through a basement window that was not closed completely. We fixed that problem in a hurry and now, there are no more markings. So the next time your dog starts suddenly marking his territory, rather than scold him, see what he's protecting you from.

Dogs of the Dow: Do it yourself vs Mutual Fund vs ETN
    2008-01-05 23:34:00
There's a somewhat popular simple investing strategy called Dogs of the Dow: at the beginning of the year, one buys, in equal dollar amounts, the ten highest yielding Dow stocks (yield = dividend per share divided by share price). At the beginning of the next year, one replaces these stocks with the ten highest yielding Dow stocks, and on it goes. This simple strategy of buying and selling once a year has, according to the Dogs of the Dow site, generated a market beating average annual return of 17.7% since 1973.Now I don't know why the starting year is 1973 (could be because the original study, done by Michael O'Higgins used the period of 1973 - 1989) or what would happen to the average annual returns if the starting year were moved forward or back, but the strategy sounds good in theory for the following reasons. Dividend yields of large companies can be a good measure of the relative worth of their stocks. That is, if a large cap company has a high dividend yield it may indicate that the share price is undervalued. Of course, it may also indicate that the company is in trouble, as is the case currently with Citibank (C). However, taking that into account, it should be noted that companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are in the index because they represent the biggest, most solid publicly traded companies in their sector. If a Dow company goes bust, it is replaced by another company in the index. While this may not matter to you if you invest in a Dow company and then see its share price in free fall, investing in Dow companies as a group, and especially in the Dogs, over the long term has shown to be profitable.Over the years, certain strategies have developed around the Dogs of the Dow, with varying results. For instance, there's one called Small Dogs (the five Dogs with the lowest share prices), and there's one where you invest in only one stock, the one with the second highest yield (the theory being that the one with the highest yield has real pro

Keeping your dogs' fur healthy and looking great
    2007-12-18 01:41:00
Keeping a dog's fur healthy and looking great isn't as difficult as you think. It does take some work to keep it in good condition but it is definitely worth the effort. With a little extra work you can make your dog's coat shine but also protect his skin from disease. Dietary changes you can try Your dog's skin and coat are linked to their diet and nutrition. Due to this, many skin conditions and coat problems can be treated through homeopathic dietary methods. Fatty acids are essential when trying to enhance your dog's hair coat condition and tissue repair. You can try the method of raw egg on their kibble, but nowadays you have several dog supplements available that can help you increase your dog's coat and skin health. Salmon Oil is an excellent source of fatty acids and oils that will benefit your dog's coat and also their arteries and immune system. Additionally you can find products that will enhance your dog's coat and help prevent shedding. Cod liver oil is an essential ingredient in this type of dog nutritional supplement as well as garlic, soybeans and crude proteins that help promote healthy skin and fur. To keep your dogs coat glossy, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to your dogs food. Safflower, canola, corn or soybean oils are options to consider. Grooming your dog It is important that you bathe your dog every so often to keep the skin clean. However bathing your dog too often can cause problems to the skin, specifically robbing the dog's skin of essential oils. One bath a month, after the age of six months is good enough to keep a healthy look to the fur and skin. Veterinary dermatologists suggest bathing your dog at most once a week, but only if you are using specific shampoo designed for your dog. There are many different kinds of shampoo and conditioners that help keep the skin healthy, but some do other things as well. Many protect against flees, while some keep the fur shiny and strong. It is best to consult your veterinarian befor

How Healthy and Safe Is Your Dogs Food?
    2007-12-04 00:46:00
Content: This article seeks to give you a solid knowledge base regarding the healthiness and safety of yor dog's food, no matter what your previous experiences on the topic. With the issue of the healthiness and wellbeing of your dog's food inside the last 12 months, the question still stands. How healthy is your dog's food? The other issue with dog food is will your dog eat it and will they get tried of eating the same food every day through out their life. I know of numerous dog owners that did just that, fed their dog the same food through out the dog's adult life until the dog has been eating the same food for over ten years. Then marvel why their dog stops eating their food and start eating table scrappes. Many world-renowned Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and Published "Dog Care Experts" universally allow any dog that eats commercial dog food is at a much serious threat of failing prematurely and by the time symptoms are noticeable, it's regularly too late to stop an agonizing death excluding by lethal shot. We hope that you have gained a clear grasp if the subject matter presented in the first half of this article. World-Renowned vet and dog care novelist Alfred Plechner, says the meager nutritional politeties of commercial dog food inevitably advance to disease. Raw Ingredients vs. Cooked Ingredients: People who supply their dogs raw food diets feel that nature planned for animals food vs. cooking human food. That all of the nutrients are still active in cooked food providing healthy meals for animals. People who consider in supplying their dogs raw food feel that no additives are wanted and that their animals are receiving all of the nutrients they oblige. They feel that the commercial food companies use additives to enhance the palatability of their food effectively "addicting" a dog to it. Commercial food advocates say that additives such as omega 3 and 6 greasy acids are central to the dog"s health system, while raw food is gone some central vitamin

Training Dogs: How To Raise A Pet Dog?
    2007-11-18 21:20:00
Bringing a dog home is just the beginning of the process of converting a predominantly wild animal into a pet. Dogs came from wolves and all dogs therefore carry a little bit of wolf in them. They are quite docile and can easily be turned into a faithful and dependable pet but that needs a little bit of patience and a considerable amount of tact. The first thing you must do after bringing a little pet home is to take it to a vet for a thorough check up. If he has any health complication, it could be detected early and treated forthwith. Second comes an anti-rabies inoculation to keep him protected against rabies and all those who accidentally get a scratch from his teeth. Besides the fact of course that the stray intruder who might get to sample a dog bite for accidentally or deliberately being where he or she is not supposed to be!Once these two things are taken care of, a pet owner must find as to what has been the dog's particular lifestyle-- whether he is an active kind or a simple, docile one; whether he needs to exercise strenuously or can do with an occasional walk. It is important because dogs are quite sensitive to abrupt sea changes in their lifestyles and may not take well to it. So, be a bit careful about it.Three things you must ensure on daily basis that the dog gets optimum amount of nutritious foods, gets to drink fresh and clean water and exercises. If your dog is the one with long hair, he needs regular baths to keep himself clean and disease free. Then comes training. An untrained dog can really be a bad pet. You must be careful while training that you teach him the right commands to obey without being too harsh on him. At the same time one must not be too light, for that could make the dog take training less seriously than he should.Dogs learn to obey easily and they are easy to train because of their natural urge to please the owner. Be affectionate to your dog at all the times, for nothing works better than strenuous training mixed with a little

Human Dog Affinity: Dogs Read Humans Like A Book
    2007-11-18 21:18:00
Risking the anger of cat lovers, I daresay that there is no other animal that has been able to establish as close a relationship with human beings as dogs. The question that lingers in many minds is "having descended from wolves which are known for their ferocity" how a dog can be a man's friend. It is not inconceivable that earlier in the history of human evolution the wolves must not only have vied for prey with humans but must have also been quite comfortable gorging upon human flesh. How did this very conceivable enmity turn into such close affinity? It is a known fact that dogs are very docile, unless of course they have been trained to fight or hunt. So, is it really true that dogs are the most compatible human companions. One Mr. Brian Hare of Harvard University performed an experiment some time back wherein he found that no animal is as sensitive to social cues from human beings as a dog. As per his study, even chimpanzees who are supposed to be closest to human being in the cha

Everything You Need To Know About Heart Failure In Dogs
    2007-11-18 21:07:00
Heart failure in dogs occur when any kind of heart disease becomes so severe that a dog's heart is unable to circulate enough blood to meet all the needs of his body tissues. As a result of associated blood-pressure abnormalities, fluid may begin to pool in some of his tissues, and the blood supply decreases to those body tissues that are furthest away from the heart. What can cause heart failure?Any form of heart disease can cause this condition. A dog may be born with a defect that leads on to heart failure - such as a hole in the heart or a major blood vessel positioned wrongly - but in most cases heart failure is associated with an underlying heart disease that is not present at birth. These diseases include the following:* Long-term disease of the major internal heart valves, making the valves ineffective as seals.* Diseases of the heart muscle.* An infestation of heartworms.* Diseases of the tissues that surround the heart, leading to a build-up of fluid.* Electrical disorders of

Dogs Fear Of Thunder And Lightning
    2007-11-14 00:30:00
There are various environmental sounds that cause a dog to become afraid or frightened. It doesn't matter whether the animal is living in a crowded metropolitan city or a spacious rural town; the chance of inclement weather causing physical and/or mental distress is high. A dog's fears of noise and light are big concerns for pet owners, but there are ways to decrease your dog's fear of lightning and thunder.Dog owners worry that a dog will become frightened during a thunderstorm. This fear results from the appearance and sound of lightning and thunder. Dogs have an instinctual fear of loud noises and flashing light. When two clouds are separated by a lightning bolt, then re-merge, a flash of light and sustained, loud 'rumble' occur. Upon seeing the flash, dogs are alerted, knowing that the sharp 'crack' of thunder will follow and scare them. When animals become fearful, their immediate reaction is physical. Dogs that fear lightning and/or thunder may react with destructive behavi

Research indicates dogs have some ability to read minds (11/7/2007)
    2007-11-07 08:20:00
Dog owners who think their beloved pooch can read their mind may be right.Canterbury University psychology student Michelle Maginnity has just completed a masters research project looking at whether the domestic dog has a theory of mind - that is, whether they can think about the thoughts and feelings of self and others. She said after carrying out a range of experiments which tested the cognitive skills of dogs, she believed they were not only sensitive to human cues, but also had the ability to think about what their human companions may be thinking."So, in a way, dogs may be able to read minds," she said.Michelle's research involved testing the social-cognitive skills of 16 dogs, some pure bred and others of mixed breed, in a food-finding task. In four different experiments the dogs had to decide where the food was hidden by following cues from people who either did or didn't know where the food was.http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/naOQ

    Blue Dogs Diss the DCCC
    2007-10-25 02:18:15
by not paying their actual dues. From The Politico:A large group of “Blue Dog” Democrats has refused to give money to the party’s campaign committee so far this cycle, underscoring simmering tension inside the Caucus and concerns about the caustic language of at least one anti-war Democrat. According to a review of Federal Election Commission records, 15 Blue Dogs have given no money to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as of Sept. 30, despite heavy pressure from party leaders. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (D-Ga.), one of the 15, said he had donated on Oct. 1, but his staff would not say how much the congressman gave to the DCCC.An additional 16 Blue Dogs have not given any cash but were exempt from party-mandated contributions because they are top GOP targets for defeat in 2008, party officials said. ...Members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 47 moderate-to-conservative House Democrats, point out that they often represent tough, hard-to-hold swing districts that could easily go Republican, meaning they must build sizable campaign war chests in order to ensure their reelections, even if they look safe right now.But there is also lingering concern among the Blue Dogs — and resentment, in some cases — over comments made by Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) to leaders of the anti-war movement. In a late-August conference call, Woolsey encouraged the anti-war groups to field primary challengers to any Democrat who does not vote to end the war. While she later moved to repudiate the remarks, saying they were misunderstood, Woolsey’s statement angered many Blue Dogs and led some to withhold their DCCC dues.“What [Woolsey] said was reprehensible,” said one Blue Dog who has so far declined to hand over any money to the campaign committee.A Democratic strategist with strong ties to the Blue Dogs said the Woolsey incident is being seized upon by some conservative Democrats, even those who don’t yet have an opponent, as an excuse not to give to the party committee.“Some of these Blue Dogs are saying, ‘If I have to defend myself in a primary, the DCCC is just going to have to wait,’” said the strategist.Further proof there are some Dems who would Stollerize (ie. purge those that think differently)the party. What they either don't realize or care about is that they only have the majority in the house because of the Blue Dogs. In their quest for idealogical purity or party unity they would embrace the tactics of Tom Delay and browbeat/arm twist/and outright threaten those that vote the views of their constituents and ultimately doom the party to a minority in the process. What's sadder still is that they fail to realize that by using intimidation and coercion they have become their enemy. Why is it that many who feel oppressed eventually end up adopting the tactics of their oppressor?

Book Review: Shaggy Muses: The Dogs Who Inspired Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edith Wharton, and Emily Bronte

Author Maureen Adams wrote a wonderful overview of these famous women writers in her book Shaggy Muses. She explores each writer's life within the context of their relationship and dependence on their dog(s). If you are a dog lover, you can connect to the strong bonds between the women and their dogs. A dog is always accepting and incredibly tolerant. These dogs were no different and constantly, devotedly listened to their mistresses recite their work without ever appearing critical. They also kept the writers from feeling too much loneliness during their literary solitude.Even if you are not a dog lover, this book offers a great overview and introduction to some of the most famous women writers of English literature. I do have to warn you; however, some of the experiences these women went through were painful.Pick up a copy of "Shaggy Muses: The Dogs Who Inspired Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edith Wharton, and Emily Bronte" by Maureen Adams.Published 2007.Women's Success History Modernizing the wisdom and trials of the women who blazed the paths before us. Dogs and Puppies
    2007-09-28 06:40:15
There are beautiful dogs and ugly dogs, but for every dog, there should be someone who loves them. I say “should” because the shelters are full of dogs who need a home. Please have yours spayed or neutered so there won’t be more. The joy of a dog is in his loyalty and unconditional devotion to his leader (alpha). When no one else loves you, your dog does. While your cat may want to be alone occasionally, your dog never does. Your dog is always open for suggestions, and almost always wants to do whatever activity you are doing. You can’t find a spouse like that! Or friends! Or children! Dogs Just Want To Have Fun (via Arbroath) The dog’s name was Shithead. Puppy tummy. (via Dump Trumpet) A puppy with a heart-shape spot in its fur was born in May in Japan. Breeder Emiko Sakurada has no plans to sell "Heart-kun". (via Fark) Sugar, the two-legged wonder dog.
