| Quick thoughts on Dolphins 24-0 win over KC | | 2008-08-23 23:01:05 | | Well that was certainly fun, wasn't it? If nothing else, this team is certainly giving fans reasons to be excited following a 1-15 season. I just wanted to quickly touch on some things from the game, with a longer post to come on Sunday night:
Chad Pennington isn't flashy or anything, but he gets the job done. He, again, moved the team down the field and produced points, including a nice TD pass to Anthony Fasano despite being under some pressure. To my count now, Pennington has picked up points in 4 of his 8 drives since becoming a Dolphin. Nice. And he continues to show the ability to move around the pocket to keep plays alive, which is really impressive. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: for the first time in a long time, this offense is not over-matched anymore with Pennington at the helm.

| | Dolphins release Kircus, Roberson | | 2008-08-22 14:13:02 | | The competition at wide receiver just got a little clearer. The Dolphins today announced that they have waived WR David Kircus, as well as CB Chris Roberson.
Kircus was the standout from the opening preseason game. However, that clearly wasn't enough for him to make it even to the 3rd preseason game. Now, guys like Davone Bess, Anthony Armstrong, and Jayson Foster will get more opportunities, both in practice and in the 2 remaining preseason games, to show what they can do.
As for Roberson, he was likely camp fodder all along. I think the battle for those last couple of CB roster spots will come down to Joey Thomas, Nate Jones, and Will Billingsley, with Billingsley being the odd man out there.
Thoughts on these two moves?

| Dolphins vs Chiefs: What to Watch For | | 2008-08-21 23:15:07 | | Well we are now getting very close to the start of the regular season. And on Saturday, the Dolphins will really play in a game that's as close to a regular season game as you can get in the preseason. The 3rd preseason game is when the "core players" - as Tony Sparano likes to say - will get the most work in preparation for the regular season. And while the team only game-planned for Kansas City for 2 days, it's still likely the most game-planning this team and this staff has done all preseason.
On Thursday, Tony Sparano did say that the "core players" will likely play into the 3rd quarter - and possibly all of the 3rd quarter. So we are going to really get a chance to see what we might expect once the regular season opens up. So let's talk a little about what we should be looking for on Saturday night:

| | "No chance" Dolphins trade Ronnie | | 2008-08-19 12:39:36 | | Can we now end this ridiculous talk?
Tony Sparano addressed these completely asinine rumors by saying this:
"No chance that we’re trading Ronnie. I understand another rumor is flying out there. Last week, it was Beck. This week it’s Ronnie."
“There was no discussion of that internally or externally. None.”
So let's just end this talk and move on. Because, seriously, anyone who thinks Ronnie Brown could be or should be traded must be out of their mind.

| | Dolphins Win 19-14: Some Quick Thoughts | | 2008-08-16 21:42:38 | | Well, in a game that really wasn't as close as the final score indicates, the Dolphins have picked up their first win of 2008. Sure, it doesn't really count, but it still feels damn good. Below are some quick thoughts on the game. More to come tomorrow on this one.
First of all, Ronnie Brown did hurt his thumb. We don't know how serious it is. All we know is what the Palm Beach Post has told us:
Brown disappeared for several minutes into the Dolphins’ locker room, and eventually emerged at the end of the half with a giant ice pack wrapped around his right hand.
Now it’s the start of the third quarter, and Brown is wearing what appears to be a hard cast. He’s standing next to Ricky Williams and wearing that big smile, so it doesn’t look like he’s too concerned about the injury.
We scored a touchdown!!!!! That's right, the offense actually looked like an actual NFL offense. They moved the ball with Chad Penningto... | | By: The Phinsider

| Preseason Game #2: Dolphins at Jaguars | | 2008-08-16 16:00:06 | | Miami Dolphins (0-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0)Saturday, August 167:30 pm ETTV: CBS 4, Radio: WQAM 560Jacksonville Municipal StadiumScattered T-Storms, 85 degreesLine: Jaguars -4, Over/Under 34.5Jacksonville SBN Coverage: Big Cat Country
As usual, by gameday, there really isn't much else left to say. We talked about what to watch for yesterday. Nothing to really add at this point.
It would be nice for this team to get off to a quick start, for once. But I guess I shouldn't hold my breath for that. The one thing I think everyone can agree on, though, is to hope for no injuries on either side of the ball for either team.
As always, use this thread for all of your live game discussion. Again, I'm not too sure how much I'll be around during the game. Look for a quick post with some thoughts later on tonight and then a little bit longer of a post on Sunday night/Monday morning with more discussion of the game.

Saturday, August 16th, 2008-7:30 p.m. Jacksonville Municipal Stadium Kickoff forecast: 82 degrees, 40% chance of precipitation
The second game of the Preseason Exhibition season is upon us. This will be the Jaguars final game at home until September 14th for their home open against the Buffalo Bills.
These two teams come in here with very different hopes for their season. The Jaguars are looking to make a Super Bowl run while the Dolphins would consider a .500 season a good year. Fred Taylor will see some action tonight for the Jaguars while the Dolphins will see Chad Pennington in action.
This is the 7th meeting in the Preseason and 11th overall for the Jaguars and Dolphins. Former Jaguars Ernest Wilford and Akin Ayodele will have a homecoming of sorts tonight.

| | Dolphins vs Jaguars: What To Watch For | | 2008-08-14 23:15:05 | | Well the 2nd preseason game is upon us. This past week was quite a week, wasn't it? The QB drama hit new heights this week. WE had a fight break out in camp between players. And we had our team MVP from 2007 cut in favor of a rookie.
But now it's time to focus on this 2nd preseason game. As Tony Sparano said earlier this week, now is the time for players to make their cases. It's time for them to prove why they should start, or even why they deserve to be on the final 53-man roster. So below is just a list of things that we should keep an eye on in Jacksonville on Saturday night.
CAN WE PLEASE SCORE A TOUCHDOWN??Last season, we all know our offense was bad. However, even the '07 Dolphins managed to put the ball in the endzone in the 1st preseason game. It took them just 2 and a half quarters before Jesse Chatman busted a 74 yard run to the house. Last week, this offense was only inside Tampa Bay's 30 yard line one time - and t... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Thursday Morning Practice Reports: Dolphins Rumble | | 2008-08-14 11:23:12 | | Sadly, today is the last day of these practice reports, as the following practices will be closed to fans and media. But the ultimate highlight of the day was a big-time fight that broke out, which you can read about below:
PALM BEACH POST PRACTICE REPORTHighlights include:
-Seems to be a lighter practice-Brandon Fields, along with Dan Carpenter, is practicing onside kicks-Vonnie Holliday not practicing with team, but is moving well doing during agility drills-A fight breaks out at camp, with Will Allen on top of David Kircus, "wildly throwing punches"-Pennington and Henne both throw interceptions during team drills-After practice, Tony Sparano keeps pretty much everyone who was on the team last year on the field for an extra little talk
SUN-SENTINEL FIGHT REPORTThis was the real talk of practice today, so let's talk more about it. It's being reported that the fight started when Will Allen, who was covering David Kircus, threw a cheap-shot elbow at Kircus' chin. Th... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins to shop Beck and McCown | | 2008-08-13 11:39:11 | | As if we didn't already know this, the Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins will indeed shop both John Beck and Josh McCown to see what they could get for either of them:
Former Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese, now with ESPN, said the notion of the Dolphins keeping four quarterbacks is ''unrealistic and outrageous'' and believes they will get only a late-round pick for Josh McCown or John Beck, if that. ''I wouldn't think they would have much value,'' he said. Miami reportedly will gauge trade interest in both but is on the hook for McCown's $2.5 million signing bonus if he is traded or cut.
This really isn't surprising, to be honest. It's pretty much well-known that the Dolphins really aren't going to keep 4 quarterbacks on the roster heading into the season.
Also, don't think that McCown won't be the odd-man out here just because the Dolphins would have to eat his signing bonus. McCown is scheduled to make $6.25 million over the next 2 years. S... | | By: The Phinsider

Well it's finally time to strap it on and play some football. We've already talked about some of the things we should all keep an eye on. So now there's nothing left to do but sit back and enjoy some football. And then second-guess any decisions that were made once the game is over, of course!
So use this thread for any and all live game discussion. I'm not sure how much I'll be around in this thread for this game. But my plan will be to do a "quick hits" post sometime tonight/tomorrow morning to quickly share some thoughts on the game and then post a longer summary on Sunday night/Monday morning with some more involved thoughts.

| | Dolphins sign Pennington | | 2008-08-08 23:55:19 | | Dolphins sign Pennington

| | Pennington to the Dolphins | | 2008-08-08 20:46:09 | | According to FOX Sports:
FOXSports.com has learned the man cut by the Jets to make room for Brett Favre has agreed to a two-year deal, worth $11.5 million, Friday with the Miami Dolphins.
Well, it looks like we will see how this plays out pretty quickly.
I'm hoping that the winner of McCown and Pennington starts and the other gets cut, letting the younger guys learn a year or so then battle it out. I think there is still a lot of potential with Beck. I know thats not the popular thought, but he has a good arm and I think he can turn it around and figure it out.
[Editor's Note by Matty I] I've edited this for front-page posting. My personal opinion is that this was way too much money to give Pennington. I mean, $11.5 million? Really? It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I'd bet this ends McCown's run in Miami before it ever started. But that's just me guessing. I'm going to look up McCown's contract info and see if... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins vs Bucs: What to Watch For | | 2008-08-07 23:15:06 | | Well we are now just one day away from the preseason opener on Saturday night against the Bucs. And as we sit here, there are, by far, more questions that surround this team than answers. And we can't expect many, if any, of these questions to be answered in just one preseason game. However, there will surely be some important things to note that could help us piece together the future of this team, at least in terms of 2008. So let's talk about some of those things to watch closely on Saturday.
THE QUARTERBACKSYeah, yeah, I know. It seems like all we have been doing is talking about the quarterback competition. But let's face it: QB is the most important position in the game. So we need to begin to get some answers here.
And considering both the coaching staff and the players aren't revealing anything to us about what the plan is for Saturday in terms of how the QBs will be used, we can't do anything but speculate and debate. In terms of... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins Reach Out To Pennington | | 2008-08-07 11:56:37 | | According to Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post reports that Bill Parcells and the Dolphins have reached out to Chad Pennington’s agent Tom Condon. | | REPORT: Dolphins reach out to Pennington (updated) | | 2008-08-07 11:33:02 | | Well this didn't take too long, did it? Sure, we all figured this might happen, but already?
The Palm Beach Post reports that Bill Parcells, who drafted Chad Pennington, has already made early inquiries into him:
Bill Parcells and the Dolphins haven’t wasted any time reaching out to Pennington’s agent, Tom Condon, an NFL source said.
This was to be expected, I suppose. We all know how much Bill loves "his players" - almost in a mancrush kind of way it seems.
Now listen, I'm not one of those guys who doesn't want Pennington in Miami simply because he's a former Jet. But I'm not 100% for this, nor am I 100% against it. I'm very curious to know who the odd man out would be here. Is it Josh McCown, who this regime just signed a few months back? Is it John Beck?
Things are bound to get mighty interesting here.
**UPDATE 3:08pm** The Miami Herald also reports that the Dolphins are indeed interested in Pennington. Jeff Darlington writes:

| | Don't expect the Dolphins to sign Carter any time soon | | 2008-08-01 13:42:51 | | At today's press conference in between the 2 practices, Tony Sparano was asked about how Quincy Carter's workout went yesterday. Sparano's response was this:
It was fine. I mean, it was just a tryout. And that's where it was...He looked fine. He threw the ball well. Did some things that way. But he looked fine.
Uh, yeah. That doesn't exactly sound like a ringing endorsement, does it? And if you watch Sparano's press conference over on miamidolphins.com, you'll notice that he seemed rather unenthusiastic about Carter's workout, and came across quite dismissive.
Maybe it was just me, but I almost got the feeling that Sparano didn't even want to waste any time watching Quincy work out. So perhaps this just was a promise that Bill Parcells made to a troubled person about giving him a look if/when he gets his life back together. So maybe Carter has gotten his life back together so Parcells was just following through with his end ... | | By: The Phinsider
| | CONFIRMED: Carter to work out for Dolphins | | 2008-07-31 11:45:03 | | Ugh!
I refused to believe these rumors yesterday, but now Tony Sparano has confirmed the rumors. The Dolphins will be working out former Cowboys and Jets QB (and former drug addict) Quincy Carter on Thursday. Says Sparano:
"Quincy is here and we will have a workout with Quincy. This is just a workout. That’s all it is. It’s a look-see. … Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells will do their due diligence on every player that’s out there, whatever way we can help our football team down the road."
What I'm hoping here is that this is just Bill Parcells doing an old friend a favor. Perhaps Bill, who likes to help improve people's lives, promised Quincy a work-out if he could get clean and keep his life in order. So since Carter has successfully rehabbed, Parcells is keeping his end of the deal and will work out Carter.
That's what I hope.
Another theory being floated out there is that this is just a move to light a fire under the current QBs' butt... | | By: The Phinsider
| | REPORT: Dolphins to sign Terry Glenn | | 2008-07-29 19:46:11 | | The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that the Dolphins are expected to sign WR Terry Glenn in the coming days.
Glenn, recently released by the Cowboys due to a dispute on an injury waiver, will be reunited with Bill Parcells, among others, in Miami.
I'll be very curious about two things here. First of all, what will the contract that Glenn signs with Miami look like? And two, how will Glenn be used? He's a very similar player to Ted Ginn. It'll be good for Ginn's development to have a vet like Glenn around. But I'm not so sure that I like the idea of a player like Glenn (who likely won't be around too long due to age/injuries) coming to Miami. Is he an upgrade? Sure. He certainly adds depth. But will he still be around when this team is finally contenders? Probably not.
This also makes some fan favorite underdogs like Davone Bess, Jayson Foster, and Greg Camarillo less likely to make the 53 man squad.
So do you all ... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins sign Henne; make some roster moves; and PM practice reports | | 2008-07-26 20:57:50 | | Well, first of all, (as many know already) the Dolphins finally signed Chad Henne to a 4 year deal worth a reported $3.5 million. So Henne missed just one practice, which isn't really a big deal.
The Dolphins also made a few other moves. They waived tackles Dan Gore and Julius Wilson as well as WR Justin Wynn. They signed WR Anthony Armstrong (an Arena League standout) and guard Reuben Riley. Riley spent all of 2007 on Carolina's practice squad. He graduated from Michigan in 2007, so both Henne and Jake Long must know him well.
Now for some practice reports from the afternoon session of day one:
PALM BEACH POST PRACTICE REPORT-Joey Porter and Michael Lehan both out of practice again tonight-Steve McKinney also didn't practice-Ronnie continues to impress with where he is physically, making catches out if the backfield and making cuts-Ricky Williams looks "awesome"-Beck looks "fine" while Henne looks "rusty"-Davone Bess "has vacuums for hands"

David Hyde lays out the facts very well here. And I'm in full 100% agreement with what he is saying. Josh McCown is certainly not the answer at QB. So what does it matter if the team can win 2 more games this year with him at QB? This year, we need to find out if John Beck can be the guy. If he can't, then we look to Chad Henne in 2009 - allowing him to have a full year to learn the offense and whatnot.... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Could Dolphins be better than Redskins in '08? | | 2008-07-22 14:30:33 | | Something that many Dolphin fans have thought about since the Jason Taylor trade is what if Miami turned out to be better than Washington. How would Taylor feel if the Dolphins finished the season with a better record than his new team?
Seem outlandish? Not according to former NFL executive and current SI.com columnist Michael Lombardi. Lombardi writes in his blog that he thinks the Dolphins will actually be better than the Redskins in 2008. Here's an excerpt from his article:
First, the Fins will be much better coached then a year ago. That's not a knock on Cam Cameron and the prior staff in Miami. It's just that, when things went bad it was hard to turn the tide. Replacing Nick Saban was tough and when you bring in someone who takes the opposite of his approach, it takes time. Unfortunately, time was not on Cameron's side last season. Players this year will be forced to improve, and as Churchill once said, "Fear does the work of Reason." Many Miami players wi... | | By: The Phinsider

They are after the jump...
Jason Taylor:
"As you might imagine, this is a bit overwhelming right now and I probably need a little time to digest it all. I love Miami, will always cherish my 11 years with the Dolphins and can't thank Mr. Huizenga, Bryan Wiedmeier and countless coaches and teammates enough for what they have all done. I will be a Dolphins fan now and wish them the best. Tony Sparano is great and I know I would have enjoyed working with him. And what can I say about the fans? This town has been supportive beyond belief, through good times and bad and I wish I could thank everyone personally.""Having said that, I'm looking forward to meeting with Mr. Snyder and getting to know my new coaches and teammates. | | Report: Dolphins trade Jason Taylor to Redskins | | 2008-07-20 18:06:21 | | FOXSports.com is reporting that the Miami Dolphins have traded Jason Taylor to the Washington Redskins. In return, the Dolphins will get Washington's 2nd round pick. Also, the Washington Post reports that the Dolphins will also get the Redskins' 6th round pick in 2010.
This move comes after the Redskins lost DE Phillip Daniels to a season-ending knee injury which he suffered during the first practice of training camp.
For the Dolphins, this move ends one of the most drawn-out soap operas in South Florida sports history. Now we can all move on and prepare for training camp, which is less than a week away, without any distractions.

| | Around the AFC East: Miami Dolphins | | 2008-07-10 23:15:07 | | It's Friday, and after a week's hiatus thanks to Independence Day, we're back with another Friday set of Around the AFC East posts. We're getting close to the start of training camp - it's almost football season! - so feel free to let the venom y'all feel for our AFC East foes flow freely (but civilly).
We'll start the day's festivities off by discussing rookie contracts and OT Jake Long with Matty I of The Phinsider:
Let's talk about rookie contracts, and Roger Goodell's claims that top draft picks make too much money. Jake Long is about as sure a bet as you'll get as an offensive line prospect, but was he worth the $30 million guaranteed that he got? How upset would you be if a ruling was passed down limiting rookie salaries, making Long the last highly-paid #1 overall pick?

| | ESPN: The Dolphins offense is pathetic | | 2008-07-09 23:15:05 | | That's right. Read the headline above. Because that's basically what the boys at Bristol are saying.
They think the Dolphins offense is quite possibly the very worst in the entire NFL. And this is despite the fact that the Dolphins, despite all their faults last year, finished tied for 26th in the league in points per game in 2007. That means 5 offenses scored fewer points than the Dolphins did in '07 - despite the fact that this team had 3 different starting QBs, lost their best offensive weapon in week 7 to a torn ACL, and traded away their best receiver after just 6 games.
When you consider all those above variables and you also take into account the fact that this offense will likely be better in 2008 thanks to improved coaching and an improved offensive line - at the very least - I really don't understand how ESPN can make these assumptions.
And that's exactly what they are: assumptions. And we all know what happens when you assume things, don't... | | By: The Phinsider
| | A Look Back: Dolphins/Jets Season Opener | | 2008-06-24 23:16:50 | |
When the NFL's 2008 regular season schedule was announced earlier this year, I (like many) was thrilled at the idea of opening up the season - and this new era of Dolphins football - at home against the Jets. The last time the Dolphins opened up the season with the Jets was back in 1995. And we'll get to that game in a moment.
But first, over the past 15 years, the Dolphins have opened the season with a divisional opponent 6 times. And all of those times come in a row, from '93 to '98. In those games, the Dolphins are 6-0. Since '98, though, the Dolphins have not started the season with an opponent from the AFC East. So it's about time we kick things off with a divisional opponent. Oh, and by the way, the last time the Dolphins lost a regular season opener against a divisional opponent was back in 1991, in Buffalo against the Bills.
Now like I said above, this is the first time the Dolphins and Jets will open the season against one another s... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Around the AFC East, Week 5: Miami Dolphins | | 2008-06-20 10:45:01 | |
We're back with the second of three Friday installments of Around the AFC East. With Darrelle Revis on the back burner, it's time to turn our focus to Miami, Florida, where the aquatic-loving football fanatics are placing the hopes of their favorite gridiron bunch in the hands of rookie coach Tony Sparano. Matty I of The Phinsider joins us to discuss...
Please talk about Tony Sparano for us Bills fans. We know he's a Parcells guy with a Parcells pedigree, but that's about all we know. What type of coach is he? What philosophies does/will he preach? Are you comfortable with him as your coach?
The Phinsider: I think the thing that excites Dolphin fans about Tony Sparano is that he's the complete opposite of Cam Cameron last year. There were reports last year that Cam wouldn't put in the hours during the season that other coaches would. He reportedly would scour the internet and read blogs/foru... | | By: Buffalo Rumblings
| | Top 5 Miami Dolphins Moments of Past 15 Years | | 2008-06-04 23:16:01 | |
So a couple of days ago I was watching the classic Dolphins/Jets game from 1994 on NFL Network and I got to thinking (which I try not to do too much). And what came from my thinking was deciding to take a break from all the recent Dolphins news and take a trip down memory lane.
So today, I present to you all the top 5 moments (in-game moments, that is - not as in when the Dolphins drafted "X" player or traded for "X player) of the past 15 years, in my own personal opinion. And that's the fun of this. Some you might agree with. Some you probably won't. But it makes for a fun debate and is something to help past the time until this weekend's mini-camp, which the media is able to access (meaning we'll have some good reports on what is going on).
So let's get into my top 5 moments of the past 15 years:

| | Dolphins sign rookie Shawn Murphy | | 2008-05-30 12:22:21 | |
[Editor's Note by Matty I] As I type this note, it's currently 4:30 pm EDT. And right now, there are no other reports of the Dolphins signing Murphy. So take the below KFFL report with a grain of salt and wait to hear further confirmation. And if anyone sees, hears, or reads a report that talks about Murphy potentially having his deal done with the Fins, please post it in the comments. [end note]
[UPDATE 4:49 pm] The Miami Herald is now also reporting that the Dolphins have signed Murphy with an official announcement coming shortly. [end update]
[UPDATE #2] And here's the info on the signing from the team's official site. [end update]
According to a report on KFFL.com, the Dolphins have signed rookie guard Shawn Murphy to a contract. The terms are unknown at this point.
This isn't surprising, considering the Dolphins had 2 new roster spots cleared following the waiving of Tab Perry and the retirement of undrafted free agent Kory Robertson (which still hasn't ... | | By: The Phinsider

[Editors Note by Matty I] This was originally posted by "JMFlyer" as a fanpost, but I bumped it up to the front page. Also, here's the official story from MiamiDolphins.com. [end note]
Miami signed rookie 6th round pick Donald Thomas to a 4 year contract according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Thomas is expected to compete for a starting guard spot this season. Thomas was a former walk on at Connecticut. He is the 5th of the Dolphins 9 picks to sign. Only Phillip Merling, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford, and Shawn Murphy remain unsigned. No other NFL team has more than 1 player signed. Nice work by the front office!

| | Jason Taylor Mad with Bill Parcells, Tony Sparano and The Miami Dolphins? | | 2008-05-21 21:49:00 | | Folks I’m MAD...what the HELL is this new Miami Dolphins organization doing? Why is my homie, Jason Taylor upset? What is Bill Parcells and the new head coach, Tony Sparano, doing to Jason Taylor? They must be saying or doing some rather brutal things for this loyal and All Star, Pro Bowl Defensive player to not want to participate with his beloved Miami Dolphin teammates. Jason Taylor is a true gentleman and has always been 100% with the Miami Dolphins - a true warrior. Something ain't right folks. Now, I almost lost it when they relaesed Zach Thomas, another true Dolphin...now there after Taylor. I’m telling you, this mess happens every year with this troubled team and I am so tried of it. I do trust Bill Parcells, he’s a proven winner, I feel he is needed here, but what’s going on? Could Bill Parcells be antagonizing, harassing my buddie, Jason(Superman) Taylor? Well, that’s what’s floating around in my Miami Dolphin mind, somebody saying something or somebody doing some... | | By: Glendell's Art And Music | | |

| | 6 new Dolphins I'm most excited to see: Defensive edition | | 2008-05-19 23:15:01 | |
We're now just 3 days away from the first veteran mini-camp under the new regime, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. The next round of OTAs are also underway. So with that in mind, it's time to talk about the new defensive players that I'm most excited/anxious to see on the field.
You'll remember that I gave out my offensive list last week, and you can click here to revisit that. Below are the 6 new Dolphins on the defensive side of the ball that I can't wait to see:
Phillip Merling - Besides just being the Dolphins top 2nd round pick (and the 32nd overall), there are other reasons to be excited or anxious to see him on the field. He was widely regarded as the best run-stopping defensive end in the draft and now he'll be attempting to learn a new position: the DE in a 3-4 scheme. Some also think Merling might be able to transition to the pass-rushing OLB spot in a 3-4. While I really don't see this as an option, it'll be interesting t... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins Sign 4 | | 2008-05-19 18:01:00 | | The McKinney deal has finally gone through, which is good news. He should be a nice fit as the 5th starter on the offensive line, barring a stellar training camp by one of the two rookies.I'm pretty pleased to see that the Fins have already signed about half of their 2008 rookies. Granted, one was a given in Jake Long and the other 3 were low round guys that might not even make the team, but it's a start. I really hate seeing rookies hold out into training camp and miss out on the really important first few weeks of their NFL careers. I don't know of many players who have done that who didn't end up struggling in the NFL (see Jason Allen). We won't have that problem this year because usually it is the first round picks that hold out and we already have ours locked down. I expect Merling to take a little longer than expected because he was a first round grade and was drafted in the 2nd, but it shouldn't be too much longer. Everyone else would be wise to sign their deals and get into camp... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins sign 3 rookies | | 2008-05-19 17:16:10 | |
As "JMFlyer" points out in this diary, the Dolphins today signed 3 more rookies, bringing their total of signed draft picks to 4.
The 3 they signed today are RBs Jalen Parmele and Lex Hilliard, and DE Lionel Dotson. Parmele and Hilliard were 6th round picks, while Dotson was a 7th rounder. The terms of the contracts weren't disclosed, but it's likely they each signed 3 year deals. As soon as I hear or read any figures, I'll pass them along.
The Dolphins now have 4 draft picks signed while no other team in the NFL has even signed one. Kudos to this front office forworking quickly.
The Dolphins also added an undrafted free agent, center Matt Spanos. Spanos is out of USC and started 9 games for the Trojans last season.

| | Dolphins to Sign McKinney | | 2008-05-18 15:58:00 | | No, not Seth, thankfully. Instead the Fins are on the verge of signing his brother, C/G Steve McKinney. It looks like the Dolphins might not have all that much faith in their drafted guards. That or they are just being careful and making sure they have a veteran option available should the young guys struggle to make the transition to the NFL. I would certainly be more comfortable having Steve in at RG than an unproven rookie. Then again, I'd like to see what the rookies have to offer, because we had a lot of holes on this team and used two picks on guards, so I expect something to come from that.... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins Cut Mormino | | 2008-05-17 22:51:00 | | This week's cutting of Drew Mormino was a bit of a surprise to me. Going into the draft, I felt comfortable with our young line, having Vernon Carey, Samson Satele, Justin Smiley, and Jake Long as 4 of the 5 starters. Any 5th guy, even if serviceable, would be enough for the Dolphins to put out a top 1/3rd offensive line next season.I fully expected us to draft a guard, and indeed the Dolphins picked up two. However, I fully expected Drew Mormino to be the guy starting at right guard. He had impressed last year in training camp before getting hurt, but I guess the front office felt he was another Joe Toledo. Toledo if you remember, had also impressed, but failed to stay healthy while a Dolphin. It's a shame, but if Jake Long can be effective, it doesn't really matter who is playing at right guard. Plus, they drafted those two guys for a reason right? We'll just have to trust their judgment.I'm more interested in who will be the QB. Drafting Henne meant John Beck is on a short leash. | | Dolphins waive Drew Mormino | | 2008-05-16 15:47:42 | |
Today the Dolphins announced that they have waived guard/center Drew Mormino after failing his physical. Mormino was entering his 2nd season and was expected to compete for the starting guard spot opposite of Justin Smiley.
Instead, Mormino (who spent the '07 season on IR) will be searching for a new job.
For the Dolphins, this means a couple things. First, it shows that this new regime has no tolerance for players who are often injured. So everyone better get in shape and stay healthy. Second, it means Jake Long will get to wear the #77 that he wore at Michigan that was previously worn by Mormino.
Most importantly, though, it means that, as of now, the two players competing for the remaining starting spot along the offensive line will be two rookies, Shawn Murphy and Donald Thomas, and the inexperienced Ikechuku Ndukwe. I'd also expect a veteran or two to join the competition by the time training camp rolls around.
Thoughts on this move?

| | 6 new Dolphins I'm most excited to see: Offensive edition | | 2008-05-15 23:15:59 | |
Well in one week, the Dolphins will be holding their 2nd mini-camp. Though it is "voluntary," it's expected that most of the veterans will be in Davie for the camp. After all, with Bill Parcells in town, "voluntary" means "you better be there." This will be our 2nd chance to see the rookies and our first opportunity to see the other new players that this regime has brought in.
So what I wanted to do was just talk about some of the players I'm most excited/anxious to see in a Dolphins uniform as we head towards training camp in July. Today we'll look at the offensive side of the ball and then we'll talk about the defensive side of the ball some time next week. The list isn't in any particular order and I'm sure everyone's list would be different, which is why I encourage you all to tell us who you are most excited to see. My offensive list is below:

| | | First over/under for Dolphins win in 2008 | | 2008-05-13 20:37:28 | |
Sportsbook.com has released their over/under win totals for all NFL teams for the 2008 season. The Dolphins come in with the 2nd lowest total, with the win total for 2008 set at 5 1/2 wins. They are tied with the Chiefs, who are also pegged at 5 1/2 wins. The lowest total belongs to the Falcons, with 4 1/2 wins.
As for the rest of the AFC East, the Patriots' total is set at 12. The Bills and Jets are both pegged at 7 1/2 wins.
But back to the Dolphins. Five and a half is a tough play and both the over and the under pay out less than even money. I think most realistic Dolphin fans would tell you that 5 to 6 wins is probably what we should expect.
So what do you think? If you HAD to bet, would you take the over or the under for the Dolphins in 2008?

| | Pats Taped Dolphins | | 2008-05-07 21:54:00 | | Apparently, some time between 2000 and 2002, the New England Patriots videotaped games of the Miami Dolphins for future access in stealing our signals. They also taped 4 other teams in 5 other games. This revelation comes from Matt Walsh, who's saga continues now with more evidence that the Patriots are bigtime cheaters.Granted, they are likely not the only team to have been doing this. Regardless it should be interesting to see what kinds of punishments they will face for this if the NFL finds them guilty of cheating. I personally don't know what they were doing taping the Dolphins, when Wannstedt's offense was run left, run right, run backwards, and his defense was straight up cover 2 man.Hopefully they'll get more than a slap on the wrist. It would be fun to see some real chaos in the NFL, with a Super Bowl title stripped from those damn Patsies.... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins sign 2, waive 4 | | 2008-05-05 15:50:12 | |
The Dolphins today have announced the signings of CB Scorpio Babers and LB Keith Saunders. Both were undrafted free agents who were given the opportunity to workout at the team's recently concluded rookie mini-camp.
Also, the Dolphins have waived 4 players, two of which were with the team last year. Those two are LB Abraham Wright and DE Derrick Robinson. Wright, you'll remember, was a training camp standout last year under Cam Cameron and Dom Capers. Many thought he would make an ideal pass-rushing outside linebacker in Miami's 3-4. Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland clearly disagree.
The two other players Miami has let go are WR Marcel Reece and CB Aaron Lane, both of which were undrafted free agents who the Dolphins signed last week after the draft.

| | Dolphins Minicamp: Day One Notes | | 2008-05-02 18:47:58 | |
As you all know, the Dolphins have their first minicamp this weekend and it features just rookies. Below are some of the highlights from the day courtesy of the local papers:
First are some notes from Edgar Thompson:
-Henne does have a long windup at times, but was accurate on many of his passes in windy conditions. He definitely throws a nice long ball.
Henne also was the victim of a lot of drops. That’s to be expected for a QB working with a bunch of jittery rookies hoping to make a good impression.
-One of them did stand out - Hawaii WR Davone Bess. He didn’t get drafted despite catching 108 passes last season and scoring 41 TDs in his college career. Bess (5-10, 195) is a little small and a tad slow (4.63 in 40), but he catches everything thrown his way.
He made the best catch of the day, a diving grab on a down-and-in route thrown by Henne.
-Jayson Foster also looks like he’s pretty dynamic. But at 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, the former Georgia Southern star ... | | By: The Phinsider

I'm disappointed that the rookie minicamps aren't open to the public. I'm not sure how they've done it in years past, but I would definitely attend this year's if they allowed it. My question is, how can we get Matty a media credential? lol. Any ideas? I want a first hand account of how the rookies look instead of getting a recap on the radio from a clueless Joe Rose or a drunk Jim Mandich.

| | Quick Hits: Dolphins cut 2; Ginn off return duties? | | 2008-04-29 19:45:58 | |
GINN BEING REPLACED AT KR?
There's an interesting little piece of information buried deep in a Sun-Sentinel article about the recent signings of a couple of undrafted free agent: Hawaii WR Davone Bess and Georgia Southern QB Jayson Foster. The quote from the paper says:
Foster and Bess have been told they will compete for kick return roles, an indication the Dolphins are intent on lessening the workload of second-year receiver Ted Ginn Jr.
Foster is an electrifying runner (see here ) who is being brought in as a wide receiver and return man. I'm a little surprised to see Bess was told he'll also compete for kick return duties, as he isn't as fast. But he is quick, reminding me of a Wes Welker kind of return man.
The good news here is that this new regime does seem to want to lessen Ginn's workload, allowing him to focus on being the team's #1 receiver. I just wonder if we are losing some value in Ginn because of how dynamic of a return man he can be.&... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Dolphins Draft Recap | | 2008-04-28 14:23:00 | | I wish I could tell you I knew anything about any of our Day 2 picks, but I don't. I had never heard of any of them, and I follow college football pretty closely. Those types of drafts are ones I get apprehensive about, because we are putting our full faith in the front office. Unfortunately it looks like we have no other choice at this point. From what I've read, it seems like they got some decent value out of the 6th round Guard and the 7th round DT they picked. The 3rd and 4th round picks were viewed as reaches by some. I don't really care either way, as long as 60% of the guys we picked end up being contributers. People don't realize sometimes that the draft is such a crapshoot and that having that sort of success rate is enviable. Hopefully they made the right decisions, because I can't even begin to assign them a grade.I didn't like the fact we didn't draft a WR or a CB, but I guess they felt that there wasn't much available that would make this team that much better. I don't necessarily love the pick, but you had to bring in a QB at some point in the draft to compete with John Beck. There was a lot of talk of Henne leading up to the draft, so this selection is anything but surprising. I would have gone elsewhere, but this isn't a bad pick at all. Great first day for the Dolphins. Things are looking good Dolfans. Things are looking good. Then again, it takes a couple of years to see if this draft made an impact. | | Dolphins Draft Merling | | 2008-04-26 18:10:00 | | Well, there was no real suspense with our 1st pick. We've known its been Jake Long for a while now. It was still good to see him out there and officially get drafted though. However, as the picks went by, things got very interesting for the Dolphins and the #32 overall pick.I advocated drafting Lawrence Jackson, but unfortunately he got picked up by Seattle just before our pick. I was then rooting for Quentin Groves, but I guess the front office felt there was more value in drafting Phillip Merling out of Clemson. I was still right about going after a DE, but frankly, I don't know a damn thing about Merling.Scouts had him rated as a mid 1st round selection, so it is surprising that 1) I had no idea who he is and 2) we still had the opportunity to draft him. If they have faith in the guy, then I'm happy with the pick. We needed that position and got it. All that remains is to see if he is any good.I was quite relieved to see that we didn't trade up for Joe Flacco and that we didn't re... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins acquire LB Ayodele, TE Fasano from Cowboys | | 2008-04-26 01:28:49 | |
I'm a little late to the party with this one. While I was out tonight, I received a surprising text message that read "Dolphins acquire Akin Ayodele and Anthony Fasano." And to my delight, the text wasn't a joke.
Various sources, including ESPN , the Palm Beach Post , and NFL.com are reporting that the Dolphins have indeed acquired LB Akin Ayodele and TE Anthony Fasano from the Cowboys in exchange for Miami's 4th round pick.
Ayodele, who will be 29 in September, spent his first 4 seasons in Jacksonville. He won the starting job midway through his rookie season and really excelled from there on out while in Jacksonville, averaging 87 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in his 4 years there. He then went on to Dallas, where he didn't make as much of an impact as I thought he would. But at 6'2, 250, Ayodele has the speed that Bill Parcells is known to covet from his middle linebackers. He's a player I've always liked, dating back to his Jac... | | By: The Phinsider

I planned on the Dolphins taking a TE in the 3rd round, but now the Dolphins have traded their 4th round pick for Anthony Fasano and Akin Ayodele from the Cowboys. This gives us the necessary depth at TE and LB. I like the Fasano trade because we weren't likely to get anything much better in the draft. That does rule out my draft picks, and I might consider doing a new mock draft before 3pm tomorrow. At least I was right about the Fins going after another TE. They may go elsewhere with that 3rd round pick now. Don't be surprised if they go after the best DB available with that pick.... | | By: State of Miami
| | REPORTS: Dolphins have offered Jason Taylor to Redskins, Bucs | | 2008-04-25 18:35:10 | |
I'm sure these rumors will continue from now until tomorrow night, but here's the latest.
First, as originally pointed out by "Layuma" in this FanPost, the Washington Post reports that the Dolphins offered Jason Taylor to the Redskins in exchange for their 1st round pick, number 21 overall. The report says that the Redskins are indeed shopping their pick, but the Redskins "don't see Taylor as a goof long-term fit with what they are trying to accomplish."
Meanwhile, the St. Petersburg Times is reporting that the Dolphins and Bucs have been involved in talks regarding Jason Taylor:
Here's the latest tidbit I've dug up through various channels: there appears to have been some discussion between the Dolphins and Bucs about a possible deal that would bring Jason Taylor to Tampa, probably for the Bucs' second-round pick. I've also been told that Taylor is not opposed to the idea because he has informed associates he would like to remain in Florida if traded.

| | Dolphins' Pick is In; Good News for the Bills | | 2008-04-22 14:00:05 | | In a development that has taken place remarkably early, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with offensive tackle Jake Long on a 5-year, $57.5 million contract ($30 million guaranteed), which will make Long the first overall pick in Saturday's NFL Draft. The Dolphins have been negotiating with Long for over a week; the team, headed up by Bill Parcells, had also been rumored to be interested in defensive ends Chris Long (Virginia) and Vernon Gholston (Ohio State). While at first glance it may not be the best news to hear that the draft's elite tackle prospect will be playing in the division, this is a development that could be a favorable one for the Buffalo Bills. It has been quite some time since the clear best option for the Bills in the draft has been to trade down; the Bills, who are likely to target a wide receiver or cornerback with their top pick, could trade down and still pick up the top player on their board (whoever that may be). ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with Michigan OT Jake Long to be the team's #1 overall pick in Saturday's draft:
he Miami Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will select him with the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday's draft, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

| | Reports: Dolphins/Jake Long not as close as originally thought | | 2008-04-21 21:33:28 | | One of the most reliable NFL reporters is the NFL Network's Adam Schefter. In my opinion, he's the best and most accurate of all the analyst and reporters. And on Total Access today, Schefter had this to say, per rotoworld: As to reports the Dolphins are nearing an agreement with Jake Long, NFL Network's Adam Schefter says the sides are "closer," but wouldn't characterize them as "close." Meanwhile, the other reporter I most respect after Schefter is ESPN's John Clayton. And here's what Clayton writes in his blog on ESPN.com about the situation: People rushed to judgment on Monday thinking the Dolphins are close to a deal with Michigan tackle Jake Long. Tuesday and Wednesday will be critical in the negotiations because Miami has to determine if it can get a deal done. The Dolphins are naturally trying to get Long signed to a contract for less than the six-year, $61 million deal signed by JaMarcus Russell last season. | | RUMOR: Jake Long to Dolphins Hogwash? | | 2008-04-21 16:40:26 | | [editor's note, by Matty I] The following was originally posted by "Matt" in the diaries. I've just reformatted it for front-page posting and added my thoughts below the quote. The entire article is right here. [end note] Surely, the Fins and Bill My Way Or The Highway . . . And A Foot Up Your Ass Parcells would have to do everything in their power to squeeze Long into considering the offer, especially since Parcells is by all appearances committed to paying the No. 1 overall pick in 2008 less than what the first selection received in 2008. Absent such hardball tactics, the only deal that Jake Long would be doing is the JaMarcus Russell package, plus 15 percent. So we think that these reports are all part of the broader ruse to get another player to jump on an offer that currently is on the table. And we suspect that the other player in question is Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston. | | REPORT: Dolphins close to deal with Jake Long (updated) | | 2008-04-21 12:56:57 | | NBC Sports' Tom Curran is reporting that a deal is almost in place between the Dolphins and Michigan OT Jake Long. Curran writes: The Dolphins flirtations with Michigan tackle Jake Long over the past few weeks have been well-publicized but this morning, with six days to go before the draft, a league source is indicating that a contract agreement is nearly in place. Word that Miami initiated talks with Long's agent, Tom Condon, surfaced almost two weeks ago. Condon actually was in South Florida to meet with Dolphins officials. Miami's also made overtures toward Vernon Gholston but little other progress has been mentioned. We knew this week was going to be interesting, and it's started already. So far, I haven't found any other source corroborating Curran's report. However, Peter King, in his article today, writes the following: So before I give you my first-round picks, understand the following things that I know to be true this morning make this draft hard ... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Dolphins low-balling Jake Long? | | 2008-04-16 22:47:37 | | Here's an interesting report by Rob Rang, who is a senior analyst at NFLDraftScout.com. He reports that the Dolphins initial offer to Jake Long was low. How low? While insiders maintain the Dolphins have Jake Long as the highest-rated prospect in the draft, their grade on the All-American offensive tackle is only slightly higher than that of pass rushers Vernon Gholston and Chris Long. The Dolphins are so torn as to whom to select, they're essentially auctioning off the pick - for the lowest contract. Insiders tell me the initial offer sent to Jake Long's representatives was $10-15 million less than what the first and second picks of last year's draft (Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell and Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson) stand to earn with their rookie deals. Should one of the three be willing to sign for a significantly lower sum, the Dolphins could find themselves drafting a player who they don't necessarily have ranked at the top of their board. | | Dolphins begin contract negotiations with Vernon Gholston | | 2008-04-10 11:40:38 | | Yesterday, it was announced that the Dolphins had begun contract talks with Michigan OT Jake Long. Now today, as pointed out by bassman, it is being reported by the Sun-Sentinel that talks are also underway between the Dolphins and Ohio State DE/OLB Vernon Gholston. Nit surprisingly, the Dolphins are going to enter contract talks with basically all of the players that they might pick as a way to pit one agent against another, allowing the Fins to get the best deal possible. Yesterday, you'll remember, John Clayton reported that the Dolphins will also likely enter contract talks with Virginia DE/OLB Chris Long and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey. Both Clayton and and Adam Schefter believe that they will not talk with Matt Ryan, though I wonder why they wouldn't. After all, the more people the Dolphins to contract with, the better. But as of right now, we know that the Dolphins are talking to two players, Jake Long and Vernon Gholston, about becoming the #1 overall pick. &nbs... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Dolphins Negotiating With Jake Long | | 2008-04-09 22:22:00 | | Many of you have probably seen the Herald story regarding the Dolphins opening up negotiations with Jake Long. This could be a sign of many things. It could mean the first thing that comes to mind: that the Dolphins like Jake Long and plan on making him their #1 pick. The chatter around the NFL has been that Jake is the newest frontrunner for the selection if Miami cannot trade down. That's fine. We need a LT badly and it would solidify our line with Smiley, Satele and Carey for years to come. The Michigan LT would probably be the best fit for the team right now. However, it doesn't necessarily mean he is the target. He could just happen to be the first player the Dolphins have contacted. Maybe it's a ploy to drive down someone else's price, namely the guy we are really after. At this point, it's supposedly down to the two Long's and Matt Ryan.Salguero says Ryan is not an option, and I believe him. Ryan is not a top selection. All the buzz surrounding him and the #1 pick is ridiculous. T... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins Begin Negotiations With Jake Long | | 2008-04-09 16:48:48 | | Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins have formally begun contract negotiations with the agent for Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long. The Dolphins would like to have a contract in place with their first pick before the draft on April 26, which would allow them to avoid a holdout like the [...]... | | By: JetsCentral.com | | |
| | **BREAKING NEWS: Dolphins begin contract negotiations with Jake Long** | | 2008-04-09 16:26:02 | | Update [2008-4-9 21:17:4 by Matty I]: Besides Jake Long, ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that the Dolphins will also talk contract with Chris Long and Glenn Dorsey. Clayton writes that no deal with any of these players will likely be struck until a day or two before April 26's draft. Clayton, along with Adam Schefter report that the Dolphins will not enter contract talks with Matt Ryan, all but ending the speculation that Ryan could go number one overall. I hate to say "I told you so," but I did tell you so!! Anyways, it's interesting that Dorsey is in the mix. I do think, though, that he is in the mix more so as leverage for the Dolphins while they talk to the two Longs. But Clayton seems to think Jake Long is the preferred pick if they can just get his agent, Tom Condon (who is an ass) to come to terms on a deal. Interesting times ahead, guys and gals! | | Dolphins doing homework on "post 1st round" players | | 2008-04-09 13:58:26 | | We've spent a lot of time talking about what the Dolphins should/might do with the first overall pick in the draft. However, like many of you, I also feel that the key to this draft will be those middle rounds where valuable starters are found (rounds 2-5). Well Barry Jackson has some info for us on who the Dolphins will be bringing into Davie in the coming days: The Dolphins, who are making linebacker a priority, are bringing in Auburn's Quentin Groves, a potential second-rounder with 26 career sacks, and UNLV's Beau Bell, a potential third-rounder. (FYI: Miami requested more tape of Georgia's Marcus Howard and has closely studied several potential second-round linebackers, including Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, USC end/linebacker Lawrence Jackson, Purdue's Cliff Avril and Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, although none of those five was booked for visits.) The Dolphins scheduled at least two left tackles for visits, Nebraska's Carl Nicks (highly skilled, but character issues) and Virginia T... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Dolphins Offensive Mock Depth Chart | | 2008-04-09 00:05:59 | | I recently received an e-mail from one of our regular readers/community members, OnTheGo, with an idea for a post. He believes that a good way to try and predict what the Dolphins might do on draft day is by taking a good look at the current roster. He suggested doing a mock depth chart. So, being a man of the people, I've decided to take action on his suggestion. And I look for you guys to do the same in the "comments" below. Today we'll look at the offense and tomorrow we'll focus on the defense. Now, a few notes about this depth chart. First, it isn't 100% complete in the sense that it does not list everyone currently on the roster. Second, you will see some players listed twice. That's not a mistake. Rather, it's probably because that particular player could play more than one position. Look for this, especially, when talking about the lineman. QUARTERBACK Depth Chart: John Beck, Josh McCown, Casey Bramlet, Matt Baker As you can... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Dolphins LB Chatter | | 2008-04-08 18:03:00 | | Just saw that both the Herald and Sentinel Dolphins blogs address the Dolphins' options at linebacker in the upcoming NFL Draft. Both suggest that Chris Long may no longer be the frontrunner as the #1 selection because Miami has been bringing in guys like Quentin Groves and Tavares Gooden for workouts.I would agree with their assessments. Long is great, but is he that much better than the next level of guys available in rounds 2 or 3? I personally think Lawrence Jackson is a beast and would be a great pickup in the 2nd round. Same for Gator-killer Quentin Groves. I support Tavares as he is a Cane, but I don't think he is an option for this team because he doesn't fit the bill as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. Not big enough.Assuming this is where the Dolphins are going, I would hope this means they are seriously considering Jake Long or trading down at a bargain price instead of drafting Matt Ryan. At this point I don't care if we get equal value according to some dumb trade value cha... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Should the Dolphins Pass? | | 2008-04-03 13:04:00 | | Much has been made about the possibility that Miami will simply let the clock expire and let someone else pick #1 overall. I find this an intriguing option. The sheer amount of guaranteed money that we'd have to give to Chris Long or Jake Long or whoever is insane. An unproven rookie instantly becomes one of the Top 25 paid players in the NFL. I think there is something seriously wrong with the way rookies are getting paid right now.Letting the Rams pick ahead of us would be optimal. I don't believe the Rams are big on Chris Long and they would rather draft Jake Long or Glenn Dorsey. That way, we could still land the guy we seemingly want and pay him less. Heck, the Falcons might take Matt Ryan next and let us slip down to 3. The Raiders might target Darren McFadden. And so on. The reality is that the top 6 prospects in this draft grade out pretty evenly and Miami shouldn't have a strong preference over any of them. At this point I would rather be the Jets with the #5 pick than the Dol... | | By: State of Miami | | |

| | Dolphins Get More Picks | | 2008-03-31 20:41:00 | | Thanks to one of countless NFL rules addressing parity, the Dolphins will receive two extra compensatory picks this year, one in the 6th round and another in the 7th. According to Armando Salguero, the picks are 204th overall and 245th overall. Not a huge deal when you look at overall numbers regarding players from late in the draft and their success at the next level, but you have to take anything you can get. The Super Bowl Champs made good use of their late picks, turning them into Kevin Boss, Michael Johnson and Ahmad Bradshaw. Lately, we haven't been doing anything with those picks. Granted, we haven't done much with any of our picks of late.Salguero also reports that the Dolphins already know who it is they'll be drafting with the #1 pick assuming they can't trade down. I'm going to take that as a sign that Miami has a clear choice, because otherwise they would still be deliberating. It should be interesting to see how they negotiate deals with the potential prospects, because if ... | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Dolphins pick up two draft picks; and other notes | | 2008-03-31 15:55:26 | | The compensatory picks have been released and the Dolphins have picked up 2 additional draft picks. However, they aren't anything spectacular. For losing the likes of Sammy Morris, David Bowens, and a few others, the Dolphins received an additional 6th round pick (204th overall) and an additional 7th round pick (245th overall). Sure, it's nothing special. But these late round picks can eventually become solid contributors, especially with solid talent evaluators running the show. Other Notes from Owners Meetings -The primetime games for week one have been announced. The Giants will host the Redskins on Thursday, September 4 in the season's first regular season game. Week 1's Sunday Night game will be the Colts hosting the Bears. Monday Night will feature a double header yet again, with the Packers hosting the Vikings at 7 pm eastern, followed by the Broncos visiting the Raiders at 10:15 pm eastern. -The 50% sale of the Dolphins to Stephen Ross has been approved by ... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Dolphins Sign Another Safety | | 2008-03-28 21:48:00 | | Ever heard of Chris Crocker? I haven't. Apparently he started 14 games for the Falcons last season. The Dolphins just picked him up on a one year deal for 1.15 million dollars.I'm not sure what this transaction means. We have a bunch of safeties already, and we have signed a bevy of special teamers to boost that unit. Is Crocker going to get a shot at the starting job? What does this mean for Keith Davis, who we signed to compete for a starting position. Heck, what does it mean for Yeremiah Bell and Jason Allen, two guys who weren't handpicked by this regime. I'd say Allen better step it up and quick, because he is likely getting cut next season if he doesn't become the high caliber defensive back Nick Saban thought he was.... | | By: State of Miami | | |
