    Conquering Emotional Eating
    2008-07-15 21:30:16
In recent years more emphasis has been put the emotional side of eating. It is now a widely accepted concept that weight loss will not and can not be permanent if you fail to recognize and deal with the emotional issues that have caused you to over eat in the first place. Many individuals get stuck on this point as they can not pin point some deep dark event in their lives that would cause them to over eat. We have all heard of individuals who have been raped or abused as children who then understandably have issues with over eating as adults. Luckily however is not the case for most of us, emotional over eating does not just occur for those individuals who have experienced a horrible or traumatic event. Some individuals do indeed realize after some thought that they do consciously or unconsciously hide behind a layer of fat to help keep themselves protected. If this is representative of you or your situation then it is easy to see why in order to achieve permanent weight loss you must

Eating The Right Way Towards A Healthy Weight Loss
    2008-07-14 06:43:05
Here are some tips to eliminate bad eating behaviors. It may actually help you in your weight loss plans.1. Eat SlowlyTo begin with, it is important to eat slowly. Studies have shown that at least 10 minutes is required before the brain receives the message that the stomach is full.Your meals should last at least ten minutes. Lengthen your meal by engaging in conversation, resting your fork between courses, chewing slowly and drinking plenty of water between courses. You should also wait at least ten minutes after your main meal before deciding if you need dessert. Within that period of time, you may discover that you weren’t really hungry after all. Also, do not eat directly from an ice cream carton, tortilla chip bag, or cracker box. Otherwise, you could find yourself easily overeating.2. Eat At The TableEating at the table prevents you from trying to engage in multi-tasking, such as surfing the ‘Net, watching television or flipping through magazines while you eat. At the table, y

Diet Eating - Super Salads is The Best Food.
    2008-07-14 05:53:00
The foundation of any healthy low-carb eating is in its vegetable content. Any low-carb eating which does not include enough vegetables to provide the vitamins and minerals lacking in high-protein foods may lead to weight loss, but it will also lead to trouble if it continues for more than a few weeks. Many people today, however, are not big veggie eaters; the fast food culture has often restricted the daily vegetable intake of millions of rushed diners to the pickles, onions, wilted lettuce, and barely pink tomatoes on their burgers or chicken sandwiches. So it’s not surprising that those who decide to try low carb diet eating neglect the veggies.Go OrganicBut after a few days of low carb diet eating of nothing but meat, eggs, and cheese, even lettuce may start to look good. So when you feel the cravings for carbs kick in, be ready to head them off with a power salad, which will not only be a tremendous treat after all that protein. You can get pre-packaged salad mixes at the grocery

    Are You Eating Healthy?
    2008-07-10 06:46:26
Is there an easy way to determine if your diet is healthy? Fortunately there is.First a list of the obvious factors in an unhealthy diet: too much sugar, too much fat, too much alcohol, too much caffeine and too much salt. Nobody recommends that you cut any off these things out entirely, but you must control your intake. Some antiaging experts such as Dr. Perricone think American women in particular eat too little fat.Alcohol and caffeine have been show to be good for cardiovascular health.Salt is necessary to life.So everything in moderation. Now, how do you determine if your diet is healthy?Do you eat a variety of different foods. No one food contains all the nutrients you need to be fit and healthy. Fruits, grains, breads, vegetables, diary products, protein from meat and fish, beans, nuts and even herbs and spices should all be consumed. There is some speculation that some of these foods interact in such a way as to improve their antioxidant or their disease fighting power. Also by con

    Smart Eating
    2008-07-06 19:00:35
For several years, I ate a vegetarian diet; the only problem was that my definition of "vegetarian" was too limited; I had a meatless diet, but in the regimen that I kept, there were very few alternate protein sources, like soy or fish. I ate mainly low-fat complex carbohydrates ( brown rice, whole grains, pasta, vegetables and legumes),believing that as long as I avoided fat, I was on the path to nutritional salvation. Despite my running, my weight soared. I was hungry all the time. By 5 o'clock, I felt I had been run over by a truck and more often than not, steered straight to my favorite Tim Horton's for my almost daily fix—coffee and bagel. Those were the days I felt sanctified for not succumbing to a donut; but little did I realize then that my whole-grain bagel fared little better than a Boston Crème in terms of body mechanics: both were filled with carbohydrates which shot up my insulin level, which in turn increased my appetite and made me feel more tired. The bagel was a te

    Ugh - The Eating Continues
    2008-07-02 02:08:00
Honestly, I don’t know what the heck is wrong with me.  I’ve been eating like a pig… just 2 weeks ago I was rejoicing in dropping 12 pounds almost and tonight I was laying on my couch eating an entire tub of spice drops - a TUB I say… you know the ones that have like 1000 spice drops in it?  Yep, ate it.  My neighbor gave it to me as a little token of appreciation for helping her out with her computer.  Some token :( I haven’t eaten sugar and I can’t tell you how long and I figured I’d just have a few, but I didn’t stop till there was like only 20 left and THEN I put it away.  Not when there were like 200 left, nope, just 20.  This was after I ate doritos which I bought at the grocery store after a moment of weakness.  It is the classic case of deprivation.  I deprived myself for so long and then I just went nuts.  I’ve been really stressed lately and food has certainly become my comf

    2008-06-26 19:25:00
In about couple of days ago, I was thinking to eat our dinner one of our favorite Thai restaurant. This afternoon, my husband asked me if I am hungry and I said “yes” and asked me if I will like to eat in Thai restaurant and I just say immediately “yes” and saying also “let’s go.” I never refuse when he urge me to eat out in any Asian restaurant as I like to eat rice and veggies. My favorite food is Thai food since the foods they have are tasty, aromatic, and satisfying and if you are Asian like like me or if you are fond eating Asian foods. I liked Thai Am restaurant, as mostly the servers knows us. Additionally their menu prices are cheap and the food are great (yum yum!) My husband ordered their dinner special the pepper steak that comes with rice, salad and spring roll and I ordered for myself seaweed salad, napa cabbage soup, emerald green curry, which mixed with veggies as you can see the pictures below. ( Do you like Thai foods like me?)

Spur of the moment last night, when Bart was missing some ingredients for what he planned to make for supper, we headed to Buffalo Wild Wings for 40 cent wings. On the way there, I was trying to find the camera and Ricardo said, "Whose birthday is it?" I told him nobody had to have a birthday to take pictures.Wilson piped up, "It's my butt cheek's birthday." "Which one, right or left?" I asked. "Well, they're TWINS" he replied. Two of our PCAs joined us. They are always welcome because Tony and Dominyk are so much more tolerable when they are around ... plus, if one of them can't handle it, a PCA can have the privilege of having to leave the restaurant with them and Bart and I can enjoy the meal. They are both really good with the kids and fun to have around as well.Dominyk almost lost it when we decided we would all have water instead of pop, but he pulled it together. The kids were telling "My Momma" jokes. Brain-Eating Amoeba Strikes in Summer causing Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis
    2008-06-20 02:34:39
Swimming in the pool having warm water may be dangerous, as it provides the favourable medium for the growth of brain-eating amoeba. There are reports of death last year after swimming in lakes or pools infested with a brain-eating amoeba. The bad blobs -- known as Naegleria fowleri or N. fowleri -- thrive in warm, fresh water all over the world. But the key word here is warm. The amoeba loves heat. In the U.S., it inhabits the relatively hot waters of lakes, hot springs, and poorly maintained pools in Southern or Southwestern states. How Brain-Eating Amoebas AttackThat food source is the human brain. It actually is using the brain for food. After the amoeba enters the nose, it finds its way to the olfactory nerve. N. fowleri appears to be attracted to nerve cells, so it follows the nerve into the brain. That's when bad things happen. The amoeba has mouth-shaped structures on its surface called food cups. It's perfectly capable of chewing up brain and blood cells with these food cups, but

Low Fat Eating – A Lifelong Diet Plan
    2008-06-18 18:51:28
It seems as though every few years, a new diet fad comes along. The low fat approach was popular last decade, only to give way to a type of diet that is almost its complete opposite – the ‘low carb’ Atkins or Zone approach. It’s easy to forget that it was only about a decade ago when pasta was considered healthy – in fact, athletes were told to ‘load up’ on carbohydrates such as pasta before a big race or sporting event! That sort of advice would be ridiculed today, and maybe that’s understandable. But the low fat approach to eating and weight loss deserves a second look. After all, there are so many harmful types of fat out there. Nowadays, most of us know that we should avoid the ‘trans fats’ that are in many snack foods, and we try to avoid foods that are high in saturated fat or cholesterol. There is solid medical evidence that shows us that eating low fat is better for heart health.Susan Powter, a popular fitness guru, lost more than a hundred pounds using a low

At the broad appetit food festival in downtown Richmond, Va., visitors can stuff themselves with pizza, Thai noodles, fried chicken and--this being Virginia--smoky barbecue. But some of the biggest crowds are gathered around David George Gordon, a cheerful 58-year-old writer from Seattle. Gordon isn't cooking anything that complex--just some pasta, prepared on a hot plate--but scattered among his orzo like tiny six-legged meatballs is a show-stopping ingredient: crickets. The author of The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook, Gordon considers Orthopteran Orzo his signature dish. He scoops the pasta into paper cups and begins handing out samples to the more adventuresome onlookers. That includes me--I have a deep fear of insects, but I have a deeper fear of my editors. The crickets are pretty good; they give the pasta a tangy crunch, though a few of those legs stick in my throat on the way down. Jon Fuller, 16, agrees. "It's really not that bad," he says and takes a second helping. "The goal is to get f

    Mindful Eating
    2008-06-02 22:07:58
By Christine Gonzalez, Pharm DIn Vision Magazine Turn off the DistractionsHow many times have you found yourself mindlessly eating while watching your favorite TV show, checking your E-mail, or driving around town? I am even guilty of finishing up my breakfast as I blow-dry my hair. While technology imparts convenience, it can actually be viewed as a double-edged sword because it creates huge distractions to our ability to connect with our body and mind. One result is the lost ritual of mindful eating. You are probably familiar with the old saying, “you are what you eat.” But have you ever considered that “you are how you eat?” Eating can transcend a basic biological necessity. The intentions we establish during the act of eating provide an opportunity to nourish ourselves on multiple levels. By minimizing distractions, slowing down, and chewing our food thoroughly, we can enhance both the nutritive and spiritual value of the food we eat.As Americans, we are famous for our inst

    Tips to Avoid Mindless Eating
    2008-05-31 05:54:00
Healthy foods for a healthy life.People seem to gain weight easily but have a hard time taking it off. Healthy eating can play an important role in helping you avoid excess weight. Here are some tips to help you avoid mindless eating:Be aware of the size and shape of containers. It's the amount of food that counts, not what it looks like.Serve food on smaller plates and bowls. Empty plates and bowls cue some people to stop eating.Use nutrition labels, paying attention to the serving size listed. Consider the facts; don’t guess at how many calories you're eating.Look past the packaging. A food's package or the language on a menu can lead you to actually like a food better, increasing your chance of overeating.Keep visual reminders of how much you're eating. Keep wrappers, empty containers, bones and other reminders of how much you've eaten nearby.Think about eating a healthier meal. Don't just focus on separate parts of the meal.Control your purchases. Don't let signs lead you to buy

If you overeat on a regular basis in order to cope with stress or negative feelings then it is quite possible that you suffer from a binge eating disorder. In addition, the over eater feels even worse after they have finished their binge. An important point to note is that this condition is treatable. Therefore, please consult a physician as soon as possible if you suffer from this condition.A binge eating disorder is seen as compulsive overeating where the person eats a large amount of food without being able to stop eating or control their eating. These episodes can last for a couple of hours at a time. In some cases, the individual will eat off and on all day long. They will eat when they are not hungry and will not stop eating even when they are completely full. Another symptom is that they could eat so fast that they do not even register what they have just eaten. As you can see, a binge eating disorder can be extremely harmful. It leaves the person with feelings of guilt and feeli

How To Save Money Eating Healthy
    2008-05-19 08:39:00
We have all talked about how expensive it is to eat healthy at one point or another.  The fact is that it does cost more money to eat healthy - but there are ways around it.  Just because food is on the rise when it comes to price doesn’t mean that we have to eat crap food just because “it’s cheaper.” Ramen noodles may be cheap, but they sure don’t offer much in the way of nutrition. In fact, it seems that all the affordable foods in the grocery store are pretty bad for you. However, there are ways to maintain a healthy diet for less. It takes some commitment and a little creative cooking, but the 10 tips below should help you out. Stretch Your Meat - If you are indeed a carnivore, then you know how expensive meat can be. However, you can stretch your poultry and beef out by using healthy fillers like tofu and grains. Make a Shopping List - By planning meals ahead of time and sticking to a shopping list, you will avoid any unnecessary (and unhe

Eating Our Dinner at Champs Restaurant, Indianapolis
    2008-05-12 19:02:00
My husband and I decided to eat in “Champs Restaurant,” I suppose to eat in P.F Chang’s but my husband insisted that we will eat in “Champs.” And before we went there, we did walk in Canal Walk 1st as it nice outside as it’s sunny. We walked for about 30 minutes and decided to eat our dinner in “Champs Restaurant.” I did order sautéed mushrooms and spinach au gratin and my husband did order their veggie patty melt. I am glad my husband did decide to order healthier food. The restaurant is very popular as almost full tonight when we were there.

    Eating slowly to lose weight
    2008-05-12 09:07:18
Girls....I just found another easy way to lose weight. It even easier than walking to lose weight because all you have to do is eat slowly. Wow sounds easy right? ;)"Did you ever notice that thin people take an awfully long time to eat their food? Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. That's because from the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness before the 20 minu

    Eating Disorder - Binge Eating
    2008-05-11 06:27:47
Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which the sufferer consumes food, unusually large amounts of food, on a regular basis in a brief period of time, hungry or not and continues to eat until they feel rather uncomfortable. These bouts are usually followed by feelings of guilt. Here the sufferer does not induce purging after binging unlike in the case of bulimia. This eating disorder is a problem, which affects both men and women but it is more common in women. This unhealthy habit of overeating tends to develop during childhood. What are the possible causes of binge eating disorder? It is still difficult to pin point the exact cause or causes of this disorder. However, the following may be some of the causes of this eating disorder:Depression - No one actually knows for sure if depression is a cause or an effect of binge eating disorder but it has been noted that about fifty percent of the individuals with this disorder have a history of depression or are depressed. A Practical Approach To Healthy Eating
    2008-05-07 21:25:21
You will never be healthy, eating healthy foods occasionally. You have to make healthy eating a habit if you want to obtain nutritional health.I have been doing push-ups five days a week for over 25 years. My arms are pretty strong but it did not happen overnight. I did not do push-ups for a couple weeks or months and then stopped. I had to make push-ups a habit if I wanted to continuously get the results I have. Exactly the same holds true with having a healthy diet.People jump on the "band wagon" of healthy eating when they read books or view web sites that talk about nutrition. While many of these books and web sites tell you what you should eat in-order to be healthy, they fail to teach you how to make healthy eating a habit. Thus in a short period of time when temptations come, people fall right back into their unhealthy eating habits. What is a Habit? According to Webster's dictionary a habit is "a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows

Changing Eating Habits to Lose Weight
    2008-05-06 03:52:00
Even if you are doing all the right exercises and all is perfect from this point of view, you might still end up needing something else due to the fact that you are still not losing weight. If this is your goal and when you step on the scale you see the same weight, you might want to turn towards your eating habits as they are most likely to be the problem. If you eat right and exercise right (and of course sleep as much as your body needs) you will notice that results will appear in no time at all. All you basically need is determination, will power and a positive attitude. The first step you need to take is to be realistic. It much easier to constrain yourself 70% of the time with your food plan every single day than just being perfect 3 days per week. Do not overdue it! Every single individual is different and this basically means that there is a big chance that you will not be able to keep hold of the nutrition program you setup if it is not in your nature. Learn about all the high

    Eating For A Healthy Life
    2008-04-23 19:38:39
Few people have given any thought to what their nutritional needs are or how important nutrition is to their overall health. They don’t know that, for example, if the human brain doesn’t get enough protein, it won’t develop correctly, or that if a female body doesn’t get enough of certain nutritional substances like flax oil, the metabolism will be impaired, and the body will gain weight. This information highlights and emphasizes the critical importance of determining what our needs are and meeting our nutritional needs through good eating habits.Experts in the media often remind us to take our vitamins and to eat fortified cereals and to drink out milk, but what we really need is information about how our eating habits and the foods we eat contribute to nutrition on a daily basis. We must learn how to provide our bodies with everything they need – food, vitamins, minerals – to maintain optimal health. In order to determine our basic nutritional needs, we need to educate our

Eating This Chocolate Will Better Your Health
    2008-04-20 11:53:16
Who doesn't love chocolate? Well there are some but for the majority of us with a sweet tooth we just can't resist that second, third (is there any need to go on?) bar of that lovely, creamy, succulent chocolate. The chances of feeling guilty after eating those lovely bars of chocolate are quite high. We all know how difficult it is to find great quality chocolate that is not only low in fat and sugar, but low in carbs and made with natural sweetener. The chocolate also contains what is known as Inulin. Inulin is a dietary fiber that is a pre-biotic. This means it is good for your body on the inside and the outside. It helps digestion and promotes good health throughout. So, just because you want a low carb, low calorie diet doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the good stuff. We make all of our chocolate with real cocoa butter and it is packed full with fiber-rich Inulin. Even if you are not on a diet, what better way is there to have a treat without having all the guilt that goes

Stop Eating Fish Oil! Omega-3 Fatty Acids Don't Help Prevent Crohn's Relapse
    2008-04-08 17:23:00
April 8, 2008 - Taking omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful for many things, but maybe not for preventing a relapse of Crohn's disease. Two related studies show that omega-3s are not effective in preventing inflammation associated with Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect anywhere along the digestive tract. With Crohn's, a patient may experience periods of remission and recurrence. Researchers looked at whether high doses of omega-3s worked as maintenance therapy in patients with Crohn's disease in remission. A total of 738 people participated in two studies. No significant differences were observed between the two treatment groups in either trial. In one study, 363 participants were assigned randomly to take either a daily omega-3 supplement or a placebo for 52 weeks. In the second study, 375 participants took the pills for 58 weeks. Researchers say the results in the first and second study were similar. Here are some of t

Do Birds Know More About Eating Fruits Than Humans Do?
    2008-04-02 19:41:00
Fruit-eating birds actively select fruit with the highest concentrations of antioxidants – compounds that help them maintain a healthy immune system – ecologists have found. This is the first time that a group of antioxidants known as flavonoids have been found to boost the immune system in studies on living animals, as opposed to test-tube studies. The results are published online in the British Ecological Society’s Functional Ecology.Researchers from the University of Freiburg and the Max Plank Institute for Ornithology in Germany offered a group of blackcaps a choice of two foods. The foods were identical in all respects except for the amount of flavonoids they contained, and the researchers found that the blackcaps actively selected the food with added flavonoids. As well as the food selection experiment, the study also looked at whether or not the flavonoids had an impact on the birds’ health. They found that, compared with birds not fed the antioxidants, blackcaps that ate

    Eating Local in Colorado
    2008-03-31 06:17:43
The Colorado growing season is starting to take root and I can't wait. Last summer my husband and I visited a local farm using "zero impact" agriculture methods to grow the most delicious, satisfying local produce I've ever tasted. When I eat fresh organic vegetables and fruits I need to keep a napkin handy because they burst with water and flavor. Organic vegetables and fruits make conventional fruits and vegetables taste like Styrofoam blocks in comparison to organic live foods. I didn’t think eating vegetables could taste any better until I tried the produce from Willow Grove Farms in Castle Rock, Colorado. Located just off Highway 85, Willow Grove Farms is oddly sandwiched between Castle Pines and a large new-home development in Castle Rock called The Meadows.Willow Grove is a sustainable farm whose compact rows of vegetables and herbs takes up little space and minimal water but provides ample supply and abundant flavor. I created the most interesting, nutrient rich salads using

Table Manners - Eating Without Prejudice (?)
    2008-03-28 15:45:56
In Indonesia, when we go to restaurants, there are no other ways to grab waiter's attention but calling {this can go from mbak (sister) or ibu (ma'am), to unnecessary flirtatious remarks like sayang (darling) or cantik (gorgeous)}, waving (hand or napkin), or - these are extremely rude manners - whistling, clapping and flicking your fingers.I am told that in UK you should not do anything but engaging eye contacts (and souls, perhaps), until they realize that your plate is empty and you are ready for your second course. Rather than eye movements, any gestures will be considered rude. No calling "xcuse me!", no frantic waving, and don't you dare to whistle, clap or flick your fingers if you want to be ignored for the rest of the night, or worse, have your soup tasted like feet because probably someone dropped his shoes accidentally into it. So imagine that you're extremely thirsty and longing to have your glassed refilled, and you desperately are staring to those busy waiters, hoping th

    Eating to Avoid Breast Cancer
    2008-03-23 21:01:00
Breast cancers tend to be seen as a completely feminine affair but the truth is, men too are at risk, albeit very rarely, of developing breast cancer. Despite medical advances several things are still not clear about breast cancer and in most sufferers of this a disease, a clear cause can still not be shown to be responsible for the disease.Breast cancer is not hereditary, though a family history of breast cancer increases the risk. Certain other factors linked with developing breast cancer include; the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer is increased by being overweight, the use of hormone replacement (HRT) increases the risk, having the last menstrual cycle from the early 50's and older increases the risk, having the first menstrual cycle at a later age and being pregnant at an early age lowers the risk. Although most breast cancers are hormonally related other factors may affect the risk, such as stress, carcinogens, use of stimulants, exposure to pesticides and oral contraceptive.

    Optimal Eating
    2008-03-11 08:50:00
I often eat too fast in effort to eat certain foods at their peak of optimal pleasure. I scarf down pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches before the cheese starts to solidify. I take large spoonfuls of ice cream (often causing brain freeze) because I don't like it too melted. I chug coffee and hot chocolate while it's piping hot and I inhale French fries before they loose their crispiness. This concerns me because I can't take the time to savor each bite and enjoy the company of others. Eating too fast also leads to eating too much and leaving dinner in a half-comatose state with a belly ache.Optimal eating can also lead to eating too much just because most things just taste better when they're fresh. I'll eat a whole loaf of bread when it comes out of the oven, because it won't taste as good tomorrow. The same goes for dough nuts, croissants, and pastries. I eat too much when it comes to food that I don't want to reheat to eat again, like fish, seafood, and red meat. No, I don't have a

Reasons for Eating: Motivate Yourself to Eat Healthier!
    2008-03-06 21:11:00
In the quest for weight loss, the diet industry puts a lot of attention on what we eat but focusing on why we eat may be more important.
