    Gaza: better shape than Egypt
    2008-02-19 04:14:00
A little travel has gone a long way toward changing perceptions in Gaza. After excursions to Egypt across a border breached by Hamas militants, some Palestinians pepper their local Arabic dialect with Egyptian expressions while others say they are shocked by the poverty there.A trickle of Egyptians also made it into Gaza. Mohammed, an Egyptian truck driver who rented his truck to Palestinians to ferry goods into Gaza, pointed to cars crowding a nearby street and said: “I thought conditions here would be harder than this. I thought people would be starving.”

    Give Gaza to Egypt
    2008-02-12 11:21:00
Daniel Pipes - On January 23, Hamas pulled down large segments of the 12-km long, 13-meter high border wall separating Gaza from Egypt, dragging Cairo into the picture. What might Western states now do? The border breaching, ironically, offers an opportunity to clean up a mess.Washington and other capitals should declare the experiment in Gazan self-rule a failure and press President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to help, perhaps providing Gaza with additional land or even annexing it as a province. This would revert to the situation of 1948-67, except this time Cairo would not keep Gaza at arm's length but take responsibility for it.Culturally, this connection is a natural: Gazans speak a colloquial Arabic identical to the Egyptians of Sinai, have more family ties to Egypt than to the West Bank, and are economically more tied to Egypt (recall the many smugglers' tunnels). Further, Hamas derives from an Egyptian organization, the Muslim Brethren. Why not formalize the Egyptian connection? Among

DENIAL is Not a River in Egypt
    2008-01-10 20:01:46
Feeling a bit like I've lost my mojo lately. In the writing department that is. By that I mean it seems much harder than usual to find something to passionately write about. Usually politics or the frustrations of our health care system are enough to get me started but as of late the angst and fervor have failed me. Just the fact that Bush will be gone in less than a year should be plenty but I'm not feeling too excited about even that. I think I may have become disillusioned by the political system over the years, expecting more of it than it can really deliver. I no longer have any trust in the system and see the politicians mostly as actors that paint an illusion of reality for the citizens. I should be elated and jubilant for the accomplishments of Barack Obama but when I think of him I see images of John and Robert Kennedy followed by the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. playing over in my mind. I'm not a pessimist by nature nor am I a true conspiracy theorist but I do feel that some skepticism and no gullibility diminish disappointment. I remember the feeling when I found out Santa was a fake. Christmas was never the same. I wasn't bothered nearly as much about that cheap tooth fairy. As an adult, I questioned the validity and plausibility of the Good Book. Still haven't quite got that one worked out. We need things to believe in so that we can make some kind of sense out of this sometimes senseless existence. I've grown to define my job as helping people find their way back on track. The stressors encountered during life often lead to such derailment. Since that person may be on a different track from myself it's amazing to witness the clarity of his or her problem or situation when exploring these things with a patient. Many patients end up in treatment for the very reason of overlooking their own problems to try and help another fix theirs. I can say that at least I do get paid for it, most of the time. I thank God for the

    History of Ancient Egypt
    2007-11-30 13:06:00
Egypt has often been called “the gift of the Nile”, and with good reason. The Nile, the longest river in the world,13 winds its way north from the mountains in east central Africa on up to the Mediterranean Sea. Every year (until more sophisticated dams and irrigation sluices were built in the mid-19th century), rainfall in the tropical belt and the summer monsoons of Ethiopia14 caused the Nile to flood. The maximum territorial extent of EgyptAs it flowed, it picked up rich soil from central Africa and deposited it on the banks of its valley in Egypt, and its delta at the Mediterranean. This produced a layer of excellent topsoil which gave the ancient Egyptians their agriculture and thus their life. It is because of this fertile mud that the Egyptians called their country Kemet, “Black Land” (to contrast it with Deshret, “Red Land”, the desert which surrounded it), and why in Egyptian magic and symbolism, black is not a color of death, but of life. People sometimes say t

    Gods of Ancient Egypt
    2007-11-30 12:58:00
The ancient Egyptians believed in many different gods and goddesses, each one with their own role to play in maintaining peace and harmony across the land. Some gods and goddesses took part in creation, some brought the flood every year, some offered protection, and some took care of people after they died. Others were either local gods who represented towns, or minor gods who represented plants or animals. The ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to recognise and worship these gods and goddesses so that life continued smoothly. The origins of Egyptian religion, like the origins of most things Egyptian, can only be deduced second-hand from the statements of classical authors (who were as far removed from those early events as they themselves are from us) and from the scattered remains uncovered by modern archaeologists. As mentioned above, the Predynastic Period already exhibited some typically Egyptian religious practices in rudimentary form—notably reed-hut shrines devot

Jewelry from 3000 BC Egypt to the 21st Century
    2007-11-17 02:57:06
Egypt The use of gold jewelry can be dated back to Egypt 3000 BC. Goldwas the preferred metal for jewelry making during ancient times. Itwas rare, it was easy to work with, and it never tarnished.Magnificent bracelets, pendants, necklaces, rings, armlets, earrings, collars, and head ornaments were all produced in ancient Egypt, theland of the Pharaohs. In 1922 Howard Carter's excavations led to the discovery ofTutankhamun's tomb and many gold artifacts, all showing the art workof ancient Egypt. Greece In ancient Greece, gold beads in the shape ofshells, flowers and beetles were very common. In Northern Greecebeautiful necklaces and earrings have been excavated from burial.By 300 BC the Greeks were using gems such as emeralds, garnets, amethysts and pearls. They also created colored glass stones andenamel stones. Carved agate cameos and gold filigree work were widelymade. Italy The Italian Etruscans produced granulated textured goldwork. They made very large, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Theywere also known for producing hollow gold pendants that were filledwith perfume. Even today the Italians are still known for the qualitygold jewelry.Rome The Romans used 18 and 24 carat gold for their coins. Coinagegold was readily available so it was popular with craftsmen fordecorative jewelry. Over 2000 years ago the Romans were usingsapphires, emeralds, garnets, and amber in their jewelry. EuropeDuring the 13th century the Medieval Sumptuary Laws were enacted whichput a cap on luxurious jewelry and clothing. The town folk of France, banned from wearing girdles made from pearls or any other gemstone. They were also banged from wearing gold or silver. Similar lawsexisted in England banning artisans from wearing gold and silver. These laws show how fine jewelry had spread beyond nobility to thetown folk. Real and Fake Gems and Pearls For as long as mankind hasexisted gems and jewels have been used as token of ones love foranother. While many pieces of jewelry existed ado

    King Tut Returns to Egypt!
    2007-11-04 13:21:47
I was browsing the web for news on the game between the New England Patriots and the Indiana Colts when I came across news on King Tut. The linen-wrapped mummy of the Golden Boy was put on public display in Egypt for the first time, 85 years after the 3,000-year-old boy Pharaoh's tomb and mummy were discovered in the Valley of the Kings.I have always been fascinated with King Tutankhamun since I was a kid. So imagine my surprise when I came across the news! I wasn't even searching for it! I remember that one summer day (I was still in grade school) when I deliberately skipped my music lessons ('twas a Tuesday) because Channel 7 had a special on King Tut! Moreover, I collect commemorative plates from different countries, and some of my favorite pieces are those from the Land of the Pyramids. And guess what? I have a number of plates on King Tut, including some that depicts him with his golden mask. Some of my best and rare finds in my stamp collection are from Egypt, too.My interest

    Egypt under the Hyksos
    2007-10-24 08:31:00
The Hyksos tolerance of rival claimants to the land, Eventually, beginning in the 15th Dynasty would spell their expulsion by the end of the 17th Dynasty, beginning with the reign of king Kamose. By now, the baleful experience of foreign rule had done much to shatter the traditional Egyptian mindset of superiority in both culture and the security of the Egyptian state in the face of external threats. Egypt, Yet, would eventually benefit considerably from their experience of foreign rule, and it has been suggested that the Hyksos rule of Egypt was far less damaging then later 18th Dynasty records would lead us to believe. It would make Egypt a stronger country, with a much more viable military. Because of Egypt's strength and ability to isolate and defense herself from the outside world, cultural and technological growth was often stagnant. Until the Hyksos invasion, the history of Egypt and Asia were mostly isolated, while afterwards, they would be permanently entwined. The Hyksos broug

    Geography of Ancient Egypt
    2007-10-12 16:34:00
The desert and the Nile River emerged when the ancient sea that covered most of Europe and northern Africa 45 million years ago shifted, forming the Mediterranean Sea basin. This shift occurred when the earth’s plates moved, creating the Himalayas and the Alps. As the Mediterranean basin sank to a much lower level than it is today, the Nile rushed down to it from the Ethiopian highlands. Over thousands of years, it evolved into its present shape. Fossils from the ancient sea can still be found throughout Egypt. The Nile RiverThe northern region of Egypt is surrounded by two deserts, the mountainous Eastern, or Arabian, Desert and the sandy Western, or Libyan, Desert. In ancient times, the Egyptians called the desert the “red land”, distinguishing it from the flood plain around the Nile River, called the “black land”. These colours reflect the fact that the desert sands have a reddish hue and the land around the Nile turned black when the annual flood waters receded.Egypt LandI

Egypt: Tourist Destinations the Latest Places to Join Hot-Spot Roll-Out
    2007-08-31 09:54:00
The tourist destinations of Sharm el-Sheikh and Luxor are the latest cities to get on board Egypt's fast-moving roll-out of Wi-Fi hot-spots.Although prices in these places will be expensive, they are considerably cheaper than the current alternatives in local tourist hotels.Under a USAID-sponsored project, "While in Egypt Stay Connected," tourist destinations in Sharm el-Sheikh and Luxor are serving as pilot cities for Wi-Fi deployments. In each city, sixteen Wi-Fi access points swathe tourist areas. Visitors purchase prepaid Internet access cards for about US$6.74 an hour.Although hotels in Cairo have been offering Wi-Fi, there has until this point been little in the other two tourist destinations. Cairo's Marriott with its relaxing courtyard garden offers a 24 hour access card that lasts three months for US$30 and it is always full of people using laptops. What they might lose one way, they gain by users paying for their premium price drinks. In Luxor, Wi-Fi covers a 5 km stretch of

Egypt's options when it comes to Hamas' control over Gaza
    2007-07-17 22:47:00
Hamas' control over the Gaza Strip is posing new challenges for Egypt. The least of these challenges is the concern that Hamas' rule over Gaza would benefit Egypt's banned Islamic movements, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas' control over Gaza brings to Egyptian borders two security threats that have been, for years, kept at bay. Hamas' seizure of Gaza is likely to grant Iran additional access to the core of the Middle East. The cornered Hamas is likely to consolidate its alliance with Iran, which would bring the rising tension between Iran, the United States and Israel closer to Egypt. More...

Hamas Completes Gaza Takover, Fatah Men Flee to Egypt
    2007-06-14 17:57:00
Hamas continued its campaign of destroying Fatah in Gaza and killings its leading officials. Hamas terrorists fired mortar shells and rockets at the three remaining Fatah compounds in Gaza City – those of the PA’s Preventive Security Service, Intelligence Service and the Presidential Guard, as well as Fatah chief and Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s main compound. Hamas said it was in control of the Preventative Security compound and would be holding Friday's Islamic prayers in Abbas's former office. Ancient Egypt Researchers have uncovered an Ancient Egyptian mandible, dated to approximately 2650 BC, with two perforations just below the root of the first molar, indicating the draining of an abscessed tooth. Recent excavations of the construction workers of the Egyptian pyramids also led to the discovery of evidence of brain surgery on a labourer, who continued living for two years afterwards.
