| | Anxiety Helps Elderly Women Live Longer | | 2008-03-16 02:08:00 | | (HealthDay News) -- Higher anxiety levels may help elderly women live longer, but may harm older men, U.S. research shows.A team at the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University followed 1,000 seniors in three Florida retirement communities for up to 15 years. They found that women with higher levels of anxiety at the start of the study lived longer than others. Year-to-year changes in anxiety levels didn't appear to affect women's survival, either. In contrast to women, men with higher anxiety levels at the start of the study were more likely to die earlier, the researchers said."Our research indicates that anxiety may have a protective effect on women, possibly causing them to seek medical attention more frequently than men," Dr. Jianping Zhang, of the department of psychiatry and psychology at the Cleveland Clinic, said in a prepared statement. | | Really funny jokes-Elderly lady | | 2007-12-07 22:32:02 | | An elderly lady finished her shopping and, upon return to the parking lot, found four men in her car. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, screaming at the top of her voice that she knew how to use it and that she would if required, so they should get out of the car.The four men didn’t wait around for a second invitation, but got out and ran like mad, whereupon the lady loaded her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver’s seat.Small problem — her key wouldn’t fit the ignition. Her car, identical to the one she was in, was parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into her own car and drove to the police station. The officer to whom she told the story nearly tore himself in two with laughter and pointed to the far end of the counter, where four men were reporting a carjacking by a mad elderly woman. No charges were filed. | | By: Really funny jokes | | |

| | Scandal of Elderly Abused by Their Families | | 2007-07-27 14:30:00 | | U.K. AT THE last census, 15,258 people out of the 80,287 living in the district were above the age of 65, which works out as 19 per cent of the population. However, both the county council and charity Help the Aged say that the true figure is likely to be much higher because there are still ongoing investigations and because a large amount of abuse goes unreported.Lizzie Jeans, the manager for Help the Aged's elder abuse campaign, said: "More often than not older people will not report abuse or maynot even recognise that they are being abused."Many elderly people have low self-esteem and think of themselves as a burden, so when people are being abusive, they often think that they deserve it."Recent research that we have carried out suggests that on anational level there maybe 500,000 cases of elder abuse that have gone unreported."The statistics reveal, quite shockingly, that family members were the main source of abuse....Of the other cases, four were committed by care home workers, on | | By: Elder Abuse | | |
| | Take Aggressive Steps Toward Protecting Elderly | | 2007-07-19 15:30:00 | | The elderly in our communities who rely on home care often are at risk of abuse, financial exploitation and theft. What's worse is in most cases the people committing these crimes against the elderly are not strangers, but in fact friends, neighbors and family members.Mary Alice Rountree, Caddo Council on Aging director, said much of the abuse is coming from the children and grandchildren."They're the ones who are stealing from them," she said.According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, 1 million to 2 million Americans 65 and older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone they depended on for care or protection. Most times elderly residents become so dependent on others they don't realize they are being victimized until it's too late and all of their finances are gone.So it's up to others to keep a watchful eye out for the elderly. And education is a start.Partnering with agencies to educate the elderly on how to protect themselves from exploitation willre | | By: Elder Abuse | | |

| | We Must Break Silence, Report Abuse of Elderly | | 2007-07-18 17:00:00 | | Illinois ..Please read this letter. It describes the fearsome existence that many of our elderly neighbors endure every day. They are the victims of financial exploitation, neglect and physical or emotional abuse. These frightened elders, from all walks of life, all races and ethnic groups, live in your neighborhood. But they cannot help themselves. They are afraid to speak out because the abuser is often a member of their own family or a caregiver upon whom they depend. They fear retribution, lack of care, embarrassment and institutionalization. This is not a pleasant topic. Elder abuse is a scar on our vision of a compassionate society. But, please, do not stop reading. There is something you can do; something you must do.Illinois law protects and supports victims, and it gets tough with those who act criminally. So if you suspect elder abuse, please report your suspicions, anonymously or not, to the Statewide Elder Abuse Hotline at 1-866-800-1409 (Voice) or 1-888-206-1327 (TTY).The trage | | By: Elder Abuse | | |

Justice Department Adult Guardian Dianne Pendergast said 145 cases of elder abuse were under investigation in Queensland. One woman lost her $750,000 home after granting a relative power of attorney.Another returned from hospital to find her house had been sold.Ms Pendergast said a growing number of "predators" wanted their parent's assets. They can't imagine that their children would want to do them any harm Recently there has been a spate of articles on elder abuse. The New York Times first took up the subject....And the consensus among the experts is that most elder abuse - physical, financial, psychological, even sexual - is carried out by relatives. "The rich and powerful are as helpless and vulnerable as anybody else," said one American specialist in the field. It is the same in Britain. The charity Action on Elder Abuse recently published a chilling report saying that middle-aged sons and daughters were the people most likely to rob their parents. It said that 53% of theft, fraud and deception against elderly people was committed by their children. It seems incredible that they should allow greed to override their natural affection....Maybe they just resent having been born.Story archived here >> | | By: Elder Abuse | | |

| | Stop the Abuse of the Elderly | | 2007-07-05 14:00:00 | | In the middle of June a major report into the extent of the abuse facing older people in the UK was published, to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.The study was commissioned by the Department of Health and Comic Relief, following representations by Action on Elder Abuse. And - despite not covering institutions or people with dementia - it has provided frightening conclusions that should make us all sit up and take notice. At least 342,000 older people face such abuse. That's greater than the populations of Leicester, Cardiff, Aberdeen or Belfast. We have the equivalent of cities of old people being neglected, assaulted, coerced, bullied and defrauded or stolen from. And it's their partners, sons, daughters, and care workers who are doing this to them. It's a sobering and solemn future for those of us not yet old, and a fearful reality for too many of those who should be enjoying their twilight years. It is about how we view and treat those who have become old in our society, | | By: Elder Abuse | | |

| | Western Pa. Scammers Who Prey on Elderly Targeted | | 2007-05-14 14:00:00 | | By Jason Cato TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, May 13, 2007Two brothers with ties to Mt. Lebanon made careers out of it. A former Beaver County accountant is sitting in a federal prison for his transgressions.A former Pine stockbroker faces a similar fate when he's sentenced in federal court next week.Though the crimes committed by these four men differ in the details, they were similar in one way: Each man preyed on the elderly in financial scams that involved millions of dollars.Pennsylvania is ripe with seniors, and seniors are ripe targets for con men, legal experts say. They’ve already used five rookie starters, and that didn’t work. Now they’re turning their lonely eyes to a guy who was a rookie two years before Phil Hughes was born. How desperate are they? This is the baseball equivalent of purchasing a mail-order bride from Outer Mongolia."Peter here...and I must disagree with a couple things.
