En una actitud muy humana, Elton procedió a hacer análisis de este fracaso y llego a una terrible conclusión: la culpable es Internet. Elton dice ser tecnófobo y no tener ni celular ni iPod y concluye que “Internet ha hecho que la gente deje de comunicarse y encontrarse, y evitó que se creen cosas”, que es responsable de la destrucción de la industria musical y por lo tanto propone que la cierren. La noticia esta acá. Elton está cometiendo un error bastante común. Está siendo autocomplaciente e ignorando el resultado de los tiempos. Pocos artistas pueden mantenerse exitosos toda su vida a pesar de haber dejado una huella. Algunos desaparecen después de un hit y viven el resto de sus días o de royalties o lavando vidrios, dependiendo de que tan exitoso fue el hit. Otros desaparecen lentamente, con el tiempo, a medida que las modas cambian. Tipos que eran exitosos a los 20-30 años de edad descubren que cuando tienen 60 años los escucha cada vez menos gente. Supongo que es difícil aceptar que uno paso de moda. O aun peor, que su último disco tal vez sea realmente malo. Echémosle la culpa a esa cosa que no entendemos bien, Internet, supongo que es más fácil. Así, el mantiene su ego intacto pero tampoco va a progresar. Otra cosa que parece molestarle es hacer poca plata con su nuevo CD. Supongo que Elton John no tiene dinero suficiente y necesita comprarse un par de nuevos yates y siente que ese dinero es su derecho y no algo que se ha ganado, así que sus CDs tienen que vender siempre, más allá de que a la gente le interesen o no. Dejando de lado las discusiones filosóficas acerca de si un tipo que canta tiene que ganar tanto dinero más allá de lo que dictamina el mercado, bajo las propias reglas que Elton acepta el que manda es justamente ese, el mercado. Si la gente quiere escuchar a Shakira en lugar de a él, supongo que lo que podría hacer es tomar un curso para aprender a mover las caderas. Y lo que resulta más ridículo de su postura es la serie de afirmaciones que hace sobre Internet, en particular que Internet esta destruyendo la industria musical y que esta debería ser cerrada. No se si Internet esta destruyendo a la industria musical o no. Pero sin duda que la esta haciendo sacudirse. Las disqueras hicieron dinero durante años porque la gente dependía de un medio físico para recibir la música. Ahora ya no y eso hace que las reglas del juego cambien, de vuelta, que el mercado cambie. Esto indica que si éstas quieren supervivir deben adaptarse a estos cambios. No pueden pelear contra algo que es indetenible. Así como las empresas que trabajaban llevando carga a caballo tuvieron que adaptarse cuando llego la locomotora, las disqueras tendrán que adaptarse a esta nueva realidad. Pero no destruirla. ¿Se imaginan que el mundo no tuviera avances tecnológicos para satisfacer los deseos de industrias atrincheradas? Y finalmente, hay que ser muy ingenuo para pensar que Internet puede ser “cerrada”. Es lo que tienen los inventos, una vez descubiertos no pueden “desinventarse”. Además de ser una postura similar a la de “la TV pudre la mente” (que implica que el medio es culpable de lo que se transmite por el) implica negar la súper dependencia que tenemos de Internet. El mundo de hoy no puede existir sin Internet. La semana pasada hubo problemas con los ADSLs en Montevideo por lo menos, y todo el mundo hablaba de eso. Pero no solo se depende como medio de comunicación e información, sino que además Internet es una herramienta de trabajo. Cientos de negocios se sustentan gracias a que Internet existe. La verdad es que Internet le da de comer a mucha gente. ¿Podemos vivir de vuelta sin Youtube, Wikipedia, Google y otros? Claro que podemos, de la misma forma que podríamos vivir sin autos o sin TV, sin radio o sin teléfono. Pero no solo eso, sino que Internet abre muchísimas puertas a cualquiera que pueda acceder a ella. Quien esta en Internet esta expuesto, sujeto al juicio de todos con todo lo bueno y lo malo que ello implica. En algún sentido, pone el poder en manos de la gente común. Hace unas semanas el Manchester contrato a un niño de 9 años que vio jugar a través de Youtube. Hillary Clinton respondió preguntas de gente común en un debate, de vuelta, todo organizado a través de Youtube.
