Automakers using more plastic to reduce weight and emissions
    2008-08-21 14:35:00
Plastics make things possible, or so say the major plastic manufacturing companies in their ads. It turns out that there's some truth to the tagline, as automakers are increasing the amount of plastic parts in vehicles in an attempt to reduce weight and emissions. While many consider steel to be the most desirable material to pound out automobiles, the use of plastic is outgunning metals pound for pound on new cars. Even luxury brands like BMW and Porsche are using more plastics in their vehicles than ever before, and both see the trend continuing. Composites such as carbon fiber and kevlar prove that plastics can perform just as well as steel when properly designed and engineered.Despite the overall goal of reducing weight and cutting vehicle emissions, most plastics still trace their roots to petroleum. Automakers such as Mazda and Mitsubishi are experimenting with bioplastics, which are made from natural ingredients such as sugars.[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]Tag: Trends, G...

Zero Emissions Racing Comes to The Isle of Man TT
    2008-07-16 18:54:42
I know, it’s bikes, not cars, but I’ve noticed, historically speaking, bikes can lead the way in a bunch of interesting ways. As I have longed hoped for, someone has decided to make saving the planet, reducing carbon emissions and generally being green a whole lot more interesting: They’ve decided to put their money (and their [...] ...

G-8 leaders pledge to cut emissions in half by 2050
    2008-07-08 21:26:43
RUSUTSU, Japan: President George W. Bush and leaders of the world's richest nations pledged Tuesday to "move toward a low-carbon society" by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050, the latest step in a long evolution by a president who for years played down the threat of global warming. The declaration by the Group of 8 — the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Russia — was the first time that the Bush White House had publicly backed an explicit long-term target for eliminating the gases that scientists have said are warming the planet. But it failed to set a goal for cutting emissions over the next decade, and drew sharp criticism from environmentalists, who called it a missed opportunity. In a sense, the document represents an environmental quid pro quo. In exchange for agreeing to the "50 by 2050" language, Bush got what he has sought as his price for joining an international accord: a statement from the rest of the Group of 8 that developin...

Lamborghini Not Worried About Engine Emissions
    2008-06-11 08:57:26
According to Autoblog, the CEO of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, isn’t all that worried about any impending emissions regs coming out of Europe. You would that think that, on the face of it, a company like Lamborghini would have a lot to worry about. Their cars are really inefficient, last time I looked, a Diablo got around [...] ...

Lamborghini CEO: Emissions be damned, we'll make big engines
    2008-05-28 13:05:00
How can a company like Lamborghini be expected to adapt to tightening emissions regulations? It's a reasonable question, and according to the company's chief executive Stephan Winkelmann, it simply can't. In an interview with Automotive News, the supercar exec justifies that its production is so limited and its vehicles are so rarely driven that its overall environmental impact is negligible. As such, Lamborghini will not be switching to downsized engines, like Ferrari has been discussing.Winkelmann also reiterated that Lamborghini is not interested in significantly boosting production, or in developing SUVs or four-seaters. Business as usual, then, for the Raging Bull, and you know what that means: powerful, loud, exotic supercars that you can't get your hands on... and hopefully, neither will the bureaucrats.[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]...

London’s Congestion Charge will increase CO2 emissions?
    2008-04-12 20:56:49
We don't want to take sides on London's Congestion Charge, but we are keenly interested in what the charge will mean for the environment and motorists. Ken Livingstone claims that the charge is intended to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions while Porsche claims that the charges are unnecessarily high and unfair. New evidence that Porsche has located, though, indicates that CO2 emissions will actually increase if the charges go into effect as planned. In fact, Porsche claims that the mayors office was aware of this report and chose not to release it. The report, prepared for Transport for London by King's College London's Environmental Research Group, predicted that the charges would create a "very high disbenefit" not only for CO2 but also for NOx, NO2 and particulate matter. The reason cited for the increased emissions is that drivers will choose to drive around London instead of driving straight through, which would be a much shorter trip. London's emissions may drop, but the surrou...

Environment-Friendly Emissions from Your Honda By Anthony Fontanelle
    2008-03-28 18:24:41
Catalytic converters might be your first thought when it comes to auto parts used for anti-emissions. While a catalytic converter’s main function is to prevent toxic emissions, your car is equipped with other car parts that ensure clean exhaust fumes. One such car part is the Honda oxygen sensor. With these two components working together, you can be sure you’ll get both great performance and fuel efficiency from your car.Through the Honda Oxygen Sensor, your car is assured of more efficient combustion and clean exhaust emissions. This car part is responsible for measuring the oxygen content present in your car’s exhaust fumes. In doing so, Honda Oxygen Sensors make sure that your car’s exhaust emissions have the right amount of air and fuel. After determining the oxygen content in the car’s emitted gases, the Honda Oxygen Sensor sends a signal to the car computer. The computer then makes the necessary changes to correct the air-fuel ratio. If the ideal ratio is not sustained, the...

China to ban cars from the Olympics, comply with international standards for car emissions
    2008-03-11 07:53:44
China will ban about half of its 3.3 million cars from the streets during the Beijing Olympics (August 8-24) in an attempt to cut air pollution. Necessary cars like emergency vehicles, buses and taxis will be allowed but only if they have an even or odd number license plate number that matches the even or oddness of the date. China may also change the emissions standards of cars and gasoline sold in Beijing to comply with international standards. Will all of this lower the air pollution at the Beijing Olympics? Not likely. Recently, China tested the car ban and discovered it actually increased air pollution.[Source: Guardian, Xinhua News Agency]...

Audi to mimic Efficient Dynamics to reduce fuel consumption and emissions
    2008-01-29 11:17:25
Following on the heels of BMW and their Efficient Dynamics initiative, Audi seems ready to mimic their Bavarian rival. With some sort of mandatory European CO2 limits almost certain to be passed, almost all manufacturers who do business on the continent will have to do something. Audi has already shown their hybrid system on the A4 drivetrain at the Detroit Auto Show, in addition to the Q7 hybrid that is coming. On top of that, they are developing simpler automatic start-stop systems and working on weight reduction. They are also working on a system of thermostatically-controlled flaps behind the grille that would cut air-flow through the engine compartment when cooling isn't needed. This is a similar system to what Cadillac showed on their Provoq concept to reduce drag under light load conditions. [Source: What Car?]...

INDIA: Global power cos look at ways to cut emissions
    2007-06-17 17:47:00
For India, which maintained that it will not sign any global agreement on limiting emissions, rather that it will take voluntary steps in the area of energy efficiency and reduction of emissions, the ninth annual PricewaterhouseCoopers report, Energy and Efficiency: Utilities Global Survey 2007, comes as a shot in the arm.For the report shows that while power companies across the world consider global warming and climate change as issues that concern them, they are looking at voluntary ways in which technology and fuel choices can help them address these concerns. So renewable sources of energy, nuclear power, cleaner fuels and energy efficiency have now made it to the agenda of 114 power companies across 44 countries. Nearly 50% of the power utilities polled for the report expect wind and nuclear power to provide an increasing share of their market’s energy consumption in the next five years. This compared to only 17% and 19% of utilities who held a similar view last year. Climate ch...

Canada will cut emissions by 20 pct by 2020
    2007-04-25 17:23:18
By David Ljunggren Yahoo News OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada aims to bring greenhouse gas emission 20 percent below current levels by 2020 under an environment plan to be unveiled this week, the government said on Wednesday. Environment Minister John Baird is to unveil his plan on Thursday. His speech on the issue was released ahead of time on a government Web site after a copy was inadvertently sent to an opposition legislator. Baird said Ottawa’s plan would stop the rise in greenhouse gases in three to five years, and he promised to halve air pollution by 2015. “We find ourselves today with one of the worst environmental records among industrialized countries. Now, we need to turn things around,” he said, blaming the previous Liberal government for inaction. Story continued here....
