An Old Friend Signs With the Enemy
    2008-06-26 11:47:00
Andy Phillips, who was recently released by the Cincinnati Reds, was picked up off waivers yesterday by the New York Mets. Phillips was a big part of the Yankees' turn around last season, and I still think he could have been a useful part of this year's team. It's good to see such a nice guy get another chance, even if it is with the bums from Queens. Although his stay there may be short-lived.From MLB.com:But his stay may be short-lived. The Mets have identified him as “an inventory” player,

Know thy enemy, why do start-ups fail
    2008-05-27 08:17:00
This article discusses why start-ups fail, I could add a few to the list, but to keep your read short I have just included what David Feinleib who is a partner at MDV – Mohr Davidow Ventures, talked about. Why start-ups failAn entrepreneur recently asked me why startups fail. Startups fail because they run out of money. You’re probably thinking, “Tell me something I don’t already know!” Read on and you’ll see that statement is deceptive in its simplicityThis post is based both on my experience as an investor and as entrepreneur (when I’ve boot-strapped and venture-funded).They spend too much on sales and marketing before they’re ready. Many venture companies move to a high burn rate too quickly and it’s hard to go back. Sometimes even a frugal entrepreneur winds up spending too much either because he doesn’t manage the money or is tempted by having money in the bank. This often happens when a startup raises too much money too early.Other times, this occurs with entr

    Real enemy?
    2008-05-23 19:17:00
Sasuke definitely will fight Naruto sometime in the future. But right now, Madara is doing his manipulation on Sasuke in order to use him to his advantage. Akatsuki organisation is never being for good. Madara surely has something on his nerve and probably he is waiting for this moment as well. He is waiting for Itachi to die. from what I can see, Paine is probably still stronger than Madara at the moment but he is taking order from Madara not because Madara is stronger but because madara shares the same pain as Paine felt and Madara is the founder of the organisation which allow Paine to carry on his ambition. Instead, Madara is using Paine as well in this case. The final enemy will be madara, not Paine. Paine might not be as evil as we thought of since during the battle between Paine and Jiraiya, we didn’t witness any evidence and reason why Paine becomes bad guy. This is probably due to Madara's manipulation as well. Btw, what is the code that jiraiya pass to the frog about Paine

U.S. Detains About 500 'Enemy Combatant' Children in Iraq, 10 in Afghanistan
    2008-05-20 10:03:00
A total of 2,500 youths under the age of 18 have been detained, almost all in Iraq, for periods up to a year or more in President George W. Bush's anti-terrorism campaign since 2002, the United States reported last week to the U.N.'s Committee on the Rights of the Child.Civil liberties groups such as the International Justice Network and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced the detentions as abhorrent, and a violation of U.S. treaty obligations."The juveniles that the United States has detained have been captured engaging in anti-coalition activity, such as planting Improvised Explosive Devices, operating as lookouts for insurgents, or actively engaged in fighting against U.S. and Coalition forces," the U.S. report said. Sleeping With The Enemy?
    2008-05-13 10:04:06
Add another name to the list of candidates for the Colorado Avalanche head coaching position:  Todd McLellan.  Who is Todd McLellan?  Why, he's one of the assistant coaches with the Detroit Red Wings. If you want to know more about his resume, read Terry Frei's article (linked above). From what I can tell, this is the current short list for Joel Quenneville's old job (in only somewhat particular order), according to the actions of Francois Giguere and the astute journalistic hounds at the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News: Pat Burns Todd McLellan John Tortorella Patrick Roy Kevin Dineen Ron Wilson (doubtful) Bob Hartley (highly doubtful) Personally, I don't care where a guy used to coach.  If Mike Babcock was looking for a job I'd trust Francois Giguere would pursue him, too, because Babcock is a good coach and that's what the Avs need.  It's not like Peter Forsberg playing for the Red Wings or Darren McCarty playing for the Avalanche.  Playe

    Is the sun my enemy?
    2008-05-06 07:06:33
OK, I know severe sunburns are bad for you, especially if you get them as a kid-- it increases your risk of melanoma as an adult. And if you want the skin of a thirty year old when you're sixty, by all means avoid the sun. But otherwise, why is it again that I'm supposed to think the sun is my enemy? I've never really bought it.Last month the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology came out with a report saying there were no health benefits in drinking eight glasses of water a day. Hmm...and yet:Up to 60 percent of the human body is waterThe brain is composed of 70 percent waterthe lungs are nearly 90 percent water.83 percent of our blood is water, which helps digest our food, transport waste, and control body temperature. Each day humans must replace 2.4 litres (about 2 1/2 quarts) of water, some through drinking and the rest taken by the body from the foods eaten. The Continuing Debate Over "Jihadists" As The Enemy
    2008-04-30 23:00:54
Last week , the Associated Press reported that the State Department approved National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) guidelines for terminology in defining the enemy created by NCTC's Extremist Messaging Branch, based on a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report "Terminology to Define the Terrorists: Recommendations from American Muslims". In these new guidelines, the term "jihadist" (among others) was not to be used in defining the enemy or its actions. But this week, it is apparent that these...(read more)

Irradication of the enemy - total blitz
    2008-03-15 15:32:00
I have had to resort to placing the gardenia in a black plastic bag or sack so that I can spray away to try and kill off the little bugs or mites that are killing off my plant. I liked the idea of trying to do this using something natural and so have mixed up a solution of washing-up liquid, lemon juice and tea tree oil. So far the plant has now received three heavy sprays and has been left dripping wet. It has been a good idea to contain it in the plastic bag as all of the loose drippings have been caught in this. I now have to play the waiting game to see whether the minute creatures have finally been obliterated.

A look at the 'Boys from behind enemy lines
    2008-01-10 06:18:56
Here is today's Jessica Simpson Photo of the Day. I asked Dave Halprin, the fine editor for Blogging the Boys, if he would share some insights into the Cowboys with us, and he has obliged. Below is Dave's scouting report on the Giants. In return, I've given him a look at the Giants from my perspective. Greetings Giants fans, Hello from the enemy, the Dallas Cowboys. It's been a good year for the Cowboys, a 13-3 record and the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs has us once again feeling good about our beloved 'Boys. But, we know it doesn't matter a lick if you don't win in the playoffs. We've spent a year thinking about playoff victory, ever since that K-ball slipped through the hands of Tony Romo and our win at Seattle slipped through all of our hands. We've been dreaming playoff dreams. Now the moment is almost at hand, and wouldn't you know it would be against an NFC East foe. There's no Book of Secrets in this game, these t

    Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
    2007-11-30 17:35:00
Quake Wars is a class-based game. There are two opposing teams; the GDF (Global Defense Force), who are humans, and the Strogg, an alien race that are invading Earth. For each side there are five classes, and while these classes are essentially the same on both sides, there are small variations in the way they perform as well as differences in names. The classes of Global Defense Force consist of Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops, and Covert Ops. The corresponding Strogg classes are Aggressor, Technician, Constructor, Oppressor, and Infiltrator. The main drive of the game is to either capture enemy territory by completing objectives, or defend said objectives for a specified amount of time. It has been said that each side will alternate between attacking and defending. In addition to the overall mission for each map, sub-missions are available, such as destroying an obstacle to make progression easier. As you complete objectives, cause damage, and aid your team with your specific class

    Akaash Maharaj - Maclean's 50: My Enemy's Enemy
    2007-11-09 16:35:03
With General Musharraf declaring martial law in Pakistan, I argue in my commentary for the Maclean's 50 that by joining hands with the dictator - even in an obvious alliance of convenience against the Taliban - we sent a message to the people of Pakistan that we were prepared to try to purchase security for ourselves at the price of oppression for others. If history has taught us anything, it is that such a Faustian bargain is a fool's bargain, which leaves everyone but the devil worse off... My enemy's enemy is not always my friend; all too frequently, he is just as odious as my enemy himself.

Finally, A Focus on the "Near" and Lethal Enemy
    2007-10-26 21:01:06
While Islamist terrorism has been the focus of almost all counter-terrorism policies since 9-11, there are some indications that the long-standing and equally intractable struggle with drug-related terrorist gangs is coming back on to the radar screen. It is worth remembering that the damage done by drug trafficking structures, due to the huge amounts of revenue and violence that they generate, do considerable damage as well. This is not a debate or whether drugs should be legalized, but a recognition...(read more)

Unable to 'win', Bush Re-names the Enemy
    2007-09-20 10:42:33
Posted by The Existentialist CowboyDon Rumsfeld said that you go to war with the army you have --not the army you might want. Bush, losing his war against an enemy he didn't want, re-named it the enemy he does want. As a National Intelligence Estimate revealed that terrorism had gotten worse since 911, the Bush regime renames an insurgency (against which it was losing) "al Qaeda in Iraq" against which it hopes to win. Re-naming is easier than winning. The GOP rationale goes like this: if the GOP can but change the terminology, a war lost on the ground might yet be won in the focus group. It's the GOP way. When people hear "al-Qaeda," it's natural that they think of Osama bin Laden and the Sept. 11 attacks. The insurgency, sectarian violence and opposition to the US occupation in Iraq are not about fighting al-Qaeda, but that's how Bush's fiasco there is being branded.McClatchy Newspapers' Baghdad correspondent Mike Drummond exposed the sinister rhetorical shift, noting in a recent report, "US forces continue to battle Shiite militia in the south, as well as Shiite militia and Sunni insurgents in Baghdad. Yet America's most wanted enemy at the moment is Sunni al-Qaeda in Iraq. The Bush administration's recent shift toward calling the enemy in Iraq 'al-Qaeda' rather than an insurgency may reflect the difficulty in maintaining support for the war at home more than it does the nature of the enemy in Iraq." --Al-Qaeda In Iraq Bush's Creation, Niagra Fall Reporter"Al Qaeda in Iraq" might have been brilliant if it had not been so transparent. In three little words, Bush wraps up a complicated lie of several hundred words. Even the man who "read three Shakespeares" and a Camus in a single weekend would have problems with that many words. Bush's consultant would hope that just three little words might make the people forget that al Qaeda had not been in Iraq until the US attacked and invaded. Bush would hope that you forget that his policies have never and will never defeat terrorism of any sort at any time. The US in Iraq is a terrorist recruitment poster. Does it really matter what Bush calls those whom his and US presence recruits?Informed of his many failures, Bush's response is typically GOP: blame the critics. About our nation's own intelligence agencies White House spokesman Peter Watkins is quoted in the Nation as having said "their hatred for freedom and liberty did not develop overnight. Those seeds were planted decades ago." This position is outrageous and incompetent. This utterly failed administration obviously lashes out blindly, stupidly at any criticism of his utterly failed and incompetent policies. Though Bush has never been right, he is never wrong. He's not "resolute", he's stubborn, stupid and pig headed. What are the odds that a man so lacking in talent or intelligence is so otherwise infallible and wise? But, he's not right about terrorism, he's the cause of it. He's not winning in Iraq, he's lost it. Winning implies an exit strategy that Bush doesn't have. Re-naming an "enemy" is not the same as defeating one.For all those reasons, Bush's homestretch is no time to relax. His failure in Iraq, his sabre rattling toward Iran makes this period the most dangerous in his occupancy. Despite having been thoroughly discredited --not by critics but by facts --Bush persists in waging a messianic campaign. Until a new GOP focus group had done its work, Bush called our enemies "evil doers". I always found it interesting that Bush targeted only those "evil doers" who were oil rich. Poorer "evil doers" get a pass. The lesson the world learned from Bush is simply this: if you wish to do evil, liquidate your oil assets. Bush's zeal with respect to Islam may have consolidated radical theocratic zealots at home but inflamed and radicalized theocratic zealots abroad. Shakespeare was more eloquent. A plague o' both your houses. If we can but avoid a nuclear holocaust despite Bush's best efforts to effect a nuclear armageddon, it will be a relief to see the end of Dick "Darth" Cheney, a goulish, snarling spector of no humanity and less good will toward man or beast. The list of those already departed this evil administration include John Ashcroft, a baritone whose tones we could bear no more easily than his contempt for the rules of evidence, due process, and or freedom of speech. Also gone is Al Gonzales who got the job because Bush wished to appear friendly to the fastest growing population segment in the US. Gonzales was Ashcroft with a tan with just as much antipathy to the principles of our founding --the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the presumption of innocence. It would seem that all Bushies have problems with the Fourth Amendment, about which the Bush line was that "reasonable suspicion" not "probable cause" was the standard upon which investigations and/or arrests were made. Not surprisingly, the Bushies are dead wrong. All one need do to end this stupid debate is to simply read the Fourth Amendment for one's self. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Amendment IV, Bill of Rights, US ConstitutionGiven the record of this administration, this Orwellian nightmare, it is surprising that the actual text of the Bill of Rights is still available. Perhaps, the de-centralized nature of information is the only thing not anticipated by Orwell, who foresaw every other outrage to civilization, Democracy, and the spirit of free inquiry and truth.Bush who cannot pronounce "Machiavellian" ought not indulge Machiavellian machinations. That Bush thinks himself smart proves he's not. Bush labels "terrorist" anyone who disagrees with his stupid policies, his incompetent regime, his illegal war and occupation. Author E.L. Doctorow got it right when he called Bush the "unfeeling President". The lack of "feelings", the utter lack of empathy describes evil itself. And that's what he have soiling the White House with venom. E.L. Doctorow: The Unfeeling PresidentDoctorow might have added that Bush is also lazy and incurious. His arrogance is inversely proportional to his intelligence. Many world leaders have been liars but none so transparent. I want to play poker with Bush and then retire. Bush will leave a legacy of state-approved torture, illegal wiretapping and domestic surveillance, concentration camps, kidnappings, the coddling of corporate polluters. The Creation of Doctorow's "Ragtime"E. "Enemy Media" Contorts, Distorts And Lies About Alan Greenspan. . .
    2007-09-18 20:57:43
Watching the “Enemy Media” completely distort (Chris Mathews seemed to be having on air orgasms) what Alan Greenspan said regarding the economy, The Bush Administration, the War and just about everything else is maddening. I’m still not sure if they are just so uninformed that they are not aware of how dumb they sound to informed audiences (which sadly given my experience is like 10 of us) or if they are actively inventing facts. My gut tells me it’s a little both.In his interview with the WSJ, Greenspan stated that “The Clinton administration was a pretty centrist party. … But they’re not governing again. The next administration may have the Clinton administration name but the Democratic Party … has moved … very significantly in the wrong direction.” Greenspan is referring to the modern Democrat Party’s war on prosperity and free trade. On 60 Minutes, Greenspan referred to Hillary Clinton as “unquestionably capable” and “very smart.” To this statement they

Know Thy Enemy -- 5 Questions With Blogging The Boys.com
    2007-08-18 22:16:52
We're just a few hours from game time, and the bitter annoyance of not being able to watch the game live is beginning to become more than I can bare.  I will have an open-thread up a little later for all of you to talk about it and I will be listening via Sirius Satellite.  For those of you in the same boat as me, the NFL Network will be re-broadcasting the game tomorrow. To help get you ready, we asked Grizz over at Blogging The Boys to answer a few of our questions about the 'Boys.  He was nice enough to accept.  Here is what he had to say -- 1. How long should we expect to see the starters play on Saturday Night.  Anyone not going to play? BTB -- Wade Phillips said that the starters would play the first half, but he added some qualifications. Certain guys may go longer or be pulled earlier, and he may keep one side of the ball on the field longer than the other. In other words, who knows? But I'd guess somewhere in the 2nd quarter he'll start pulling pl

    The Enemy Within: Islamist/Jihadist Websites
    2007-08-04 11:12:00
One can hardly imagine the growth of radical Islam and its jihadi organizations in recent years without the immense reach, impact and capabilities of the Internet. The threat posed by Islamist websites has recently been demonstrated by three cases: the case of the New Jersey group that planned a terrorist attack on Fort Dix; the planned terrorist attack on JFK; and the attempted car bombings in the UK. According to media reports, the terrorists in all three cases were inspired by jihadist websites. There were also two recent court cases in Britain and Switzerland in which terrorists were convicted of using Internet sites to promote terrorist activities. The jihadist terrorist organizations utilize the Internet for two main purposes: for operational needs, and for indoctrination and da'wa (propagation of Islam). The Enemy of My Enemy....is Israel?
    2007-07-26 09:24:40
Arab League extends 'hand of peace' to Israel JERUSALEM (AP) — Arab League envoys paid a historic visit to Israel on Wednesday to present a plan for a regional settlement, saying they were extending "a hand of peace" on behalf of the Arab world. The one-day visit by the foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan marked the first time the 22-member group has sent representatives to Israel. The Arab League peace plan envisions full recognition of Israel in return for Israeli withdrawal from lands captured in the 1967 Middle East War. full articleSimply put Iran and its proxies have overplayed their hand. By showing that they are willing to train, arm, and finance terrorists/militias within their neighbors borders they have proven themselves to be the greater evil. (Plus there is that whole nuculer weapon thingy.)Additionally since America has essentially turned a Sunni controlled sectarian state into a Shiite controlled semi-religious state the balance of power in the region has been broke

Remember After You Read This...I'm NOT The Enemy!!!
    2007-07-10 16:47:00
But I will give you my opinion on this commentary from MSNBC online. It has to do with the pennant races, and this excerpt is all about the AL East. My comments (be kind!) will follow........OPINIONBy Michael VentreMSNBC contributorUpdated: 10:04 p.m. ET July 8, 2007 *RED SOX ONLY TEAM WITH A LOCK ON THE POSTSEASON* Michael Ventre"Now that more pressing matters such as which sluggers passed up the Home Run Derby or why the Supreme Court failed to meddle in Barry Bonds’ late voting surge like it did in the 2000 presidential election are off the radar, it’s time to focus on the races. No, I’m not talking about our inherent differences as humans, but rather the division races in baseball. At this time of year, they can be just as much of a hot-button topic. The All-Star break is a chance for everyone involved to collect their breath, relax, count their money and complain about why they’re not featured more often on “Baseball Tonight.” But really the key issues involve teams vyin

Sleeping With The Enemy - Broncos and Chiefs Talking Trade
    2007-06-23 05:42:05
Dude Needs To Tackle Better Than That!Could it happen?  I mean really, could the Broncos and Chiefs, bitter AFC West rivals form way back int the AFL days really consummate a trade, really agree to a deal that could make each team better in some way, shape or form?   If you believe what the newspapers in Kansas City are saying the Broncos and Chiefs are in discussions on a deal that would send disgruntled Chiefs safety Greg Wesley to the Broncos for a draft pick.  In fact, the Kansas City Star goes so far as to say the two teams have agreed to the compensation, with the Chiefs holding off final approval of the deal becuase, well, after all, the Broncos are a divisional rival and Wesley is a pretty decent safety.   In reality this story, which you have heard nothing of in the Denver media, was probably leaked by the Chiefs in hopes of generating interest in the seven-year vet around the league.  If nothing happens, and the way the Chiefs have handled their per

    Getting To Know The Enemy
    2007-06-21 07:39:32
Earlier this week I posted about a phishing scam — an email designed to cause you alarm and to take action by downloading an attachment. It sounded official, and, to the unsuspecting eye, could really get your attention. I have another one to show you. My decision to include this is to serve as another example of how we can become fooled with fancy words and the sense of urgency. But remember this: the more you know about your enemy, the less likely you are to become their victim. In this particular instance, an attachment was included, but with an icon embedded in the body of the email. The phrase, “Word has encountered an error, please double click on the icon above to relaunch msword.exe” was included. The purpose of this was to lower your defenses — your mental defenses, that is — because you’re more likely to think that some sort of “processing” has taken place on your computer, and if your computer knew to do something, then it must

Politics: Bush Administration Owned by the Court, Court Says Military Cannot Hold ‘Enemy Combatant’
    2007-06-12 16:04:57
In a stinging rejection of one of the Bush administration’s central assertions about the scope of executive authority to combat terrorism, a federal appeals court ordered the Pentagon to release a man being held as an enemy combatant. In War of Vague Borders, Detainee Longs for Court (January 5, 2007) “To sanction such presidential authority to [...]

    Seaweed is Cellulite's Enemy!
    2007-05-28 16:34:00
Seaweed is Cellulite’s Enemy! Did you know? Cellulite affects more than 80% of the women in the world? There isn’t one ethnicity that isn’t affected by cellulite. What is Cellulite? Cellulite is an area or pocket of excess body fat that is trapped between the layers in your skin. This usually happens on the back of your thighs and buttocks; where blood circulation isn’t strong enough to flush

My husband snores a lot. You could actually tell just by looking at his chubby physique that he can snore to as loud as 70 dB. Your worst enemy to successful investing - the media
    2003-05-19 04:12:00
How do you make your investment decisions and where do you get your information? If you're like most of the people I know, you look to the experts. That's fine, however it's important to be aware that for every expert, there's an opinion and for every opinion there's an expert. I have a friend who says that opinions are like noses: everyone has one but you wouldn't live in anyone else's nose!
