| Harmison says Pattinson pick is snub to England youth | | 2008-07-20 17:11:00 | |

Stephen Harmison has said England's decision to select Darren Pattinson for the ongoing second Test against South Africa at Headingley betrayed a lack of confidence in the country's up-and-coming quicks.
Ashes winning fast bowler Harmison, currently out of the England side after being dropped following the first Test in New Zealand earlier this year, was one of several seasoned bowlers overlooked when Ryan Sidebottom became doubtful with a back strain.
Instead the selectors opted to hand a debut to Australia-raised but Grimsby-born Pattinson, 29, a Nottinghamshire colleague of left-arm seamer Sidebottom, who only began his Trent Bridge career at the start of the season.

Ashwell Prince's second hundred in as many matches against England helped give South Africa a significant first innings lead in the second Test at Headingley here Saturday.
The Proteas, when bad light forced an early close on the second day, were 322 for four in reply to England's 203, a lead of 119.
Prince was 134 not out, following his 101 in the first innings of the drawn first Test at Lord's, and AB de Villiers 70 not out after South Africa had lost just one wicket in the day's play
Their unbroken fifth-wicket stand was worth 179 in 61 overs after they'd come together at 143 for four.
South Africa vice-captain Prince has now turned nine of his 17 Test fifties into hundreds and at stumps he was closing in on his Test-best score of 139 not out against Zimbabwe at Centurion in 200 | | By: BrightCricket

The Australian cricket community was caught by surprise on Saturday at Australia-raised paceman Darren Pattinson's bolt from obscurity to the England Test team.
The 29-year-old Nottinghamshire bowler was a surprise choice to replace his injured county colleague Ryan Sidebottom in the England side for the second Test against South Africa at Headingley on Friday.
Although born in Grimsby, northern England, Pattinson grew up in Melbourne and his Australia-born younger brother, James, has represented the Australia Under-19 team.
Cricket officials from his home state Victoria admitted surprise that Pattinson, who is contracted with Cricket Victoria, was not an Australian citizen and even eligible to play for England.

Ashwell Prince's second hundred in as many matches against England helped guide South Africa into a first innings lead in the second Test at Headingley Saturday.
The Proteas, at tea on the second day, were 262 for four in reply to England's 203, a lead of 59.
Prince was 100 not out, following his 101 in the first innings of the drawn first Test at Lord's, and AB de Villiers 44 not out.
Their unbroken stand for the fifth wicket was worth 119 after they'd come together at 143 for four.
England took the new ball soon after it became available but Prince's response was to drive fast bowler Andrew Flintoff, appearing in his first Test for 18 months because of injury, down the ground for four to go to 99.

South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said England captain Michael Vaughan had got what he deserved from "Mother Cricket" after the first day of the second Test here at Headingley was overshadowed by two controversial examples of disputed catches.
Before lunch, South Africa third slip AB de Villiers claimed he'd caught Andrew Strauss on 23 but the England opener stood his ground and replays showed de Villiers had dropped the ball.
Strauss was out soon afterwards, caught behind having added just four more runs, but that didn't stop, according to Arthur, Vaughan from giving de Villiers a piece of his mind at lunchtime.
Then late in the day, Vaughan - diving forward at mid-off - claimed a low catch off the bowling of the recalled Andrew Flintoff which would have seen the in-form H | | By: BrightCricket

Surprise debutant Darren Pattinson took his first wicket for England but South Africa were still closing in on England's first innings total in the second Test at Headingley here Saturday.
The Australia-raised pace bowler, in for injured Nottinghamshire colleague Ryan Sidebottom, had the dangerous Hashim Amla lbw for 38 but that was the only wicket the Proteas lost in the morning session.
At lunch, South Africa were 158 for four, a deficit of 45.
Ashwell Prince was 34 not out and AB de Villiers seven not out.

Andrew Flintoff's first Test innings for 18 months failed to prevent England being bowled out for 203 on the first day of the second Test against South Africa at Headingley here Friday.
Flintoff, back in the team at the expense of Paul Collingwood, following ankle and side injuries, had made 17 when he flat-footedly edged Dale Steyn through to wicket-keeper Mark Boucher.
But it was Morne Morkel, with four wickets for 52 runs in 15 overs, who led the way as the much-vaunted South Africa pace attack, who had been disappointing in the drawn first Test at Lord's, lived up to their billing albeit in helpful, overcast conditions.
Fellow quick Steyn was not far behind with four for 76.

| | The Church of England is Protestant again | | 2008-07-08 04:43:23 | | "A couple of hours ago, the Church of England decisively severed itself from its Catholic roots. By voting to ordain women bishops without significant safeguards for traditionalists, it reasserted its identity as a Protestant Church. Whether it will be a liberal or conservative Protestant denomination remains to be seen. But any hope of unity with Rome and the Orthodox has gone forever." So writes Damian Thompson in his Telegraph blog.It came as no surprise to me. I will see where we stand tomorrow, the we being the traditionalists. But I fear it's as the Rev David Houlding, a leading Anglo-Catholic, said. "It's getting worse – it's going downhill very badly. It's quite clear there is a pincer movement and we are being squeezed out. We are being pushed by a particular liberal agenda and we are going to have women bishops at the exclusion of any other view."As I felt this morning, precious little discernment. | | Sharia law in England? | | 2008-07-04 08:25:46 | | Once again the debate over whether Sharia law could, or should, be introduced into the UK is ignited. Previously the Archbishop of Canterbury put his head above the parapet. He got slings and arrows for his pains! Now the Lord Chief Justice has fared slightly better. He has at least been listened to.Basically all Sharia law is is a set of principles which govern the way many Muslims believe they should live their life. Not all Muslims by any stretch, but a goodly number. My view is that it is perfectly OK for this if it is wanted. After all, the Church of England has its own set of laws encoded into synodical law or canon. I can't see that a Muslim counterpart would be any different. Now, before the Sun hacks start debasing the noble and learned gentleman, we should understand what exactly Lord Phillips is saying. He says there is no reason Sharia law's principles could not be used in mediation. However, he emphasises this would still be subject to the "jurisdiction of the English and W | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

In our final installment of this Friday's version of Around the AFC East, MaPatsFan - head blogger at Pats Pulpit - joins us to discuss the New England Patriots' receiving corps.
How will the Pats' receiving corps work this year? With Donte' Stallworth out of the picture, is Wes Welker likely to be the team's #2? Who besides Randy Moss and Welker is likely to see the most playing time?
Pats Pulpit: First, let's delve into how the Patriots use their receivers. All have differing skill sets and aren't interchangeable, so there's really no #1, #2, etc... Randy Moss is the seam guy; his particular forte is running down the sideline and pulling down the deep ball. At 6-4 and 210 lbs, he's physically built for this, too. He's tall enough to pull down the ball over the heads of shorter defensive backs and he's got long legs to beat those same DBs. In the middle and on slants, he looks awkward. A Muslim Home Office adviser, for example, was responsible for Baroness Scotland’s aborting of the legislation against honour killings, arguing that informal methods would be better. Moving on to the 2nd installment of this week's "Around The AFC East," we now turn our attention to the New England Patriots. And helping us out is the relatively new blogger over at Pats Pulpit (who is doing a hell of a job, by the way), MaPatsFan. His response to my question is below. Head over to his site to see how I responded to his question.
Matty I: I haven't really talked with you about last season's Super Bowl, so let's start with that game. Seemingly everybody thought the Pats would win that game and complete the perfect season. What exactly went wrong in that game? Do you blame the offensive line the most for not keeping Tom Brady protected? Are the coaches also to blame for not really making any adjustments?

Meanwhile in London, Chelsea, who was still mathematically alive today, as both they and Man U were tied on points, faced Bolton.Chelsea led 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, but the result at Wigan made it a foregone conclusion that they wouldn't take the title. Kroszner touched on transparency in lending standards and standardization aiding the sub-prime mortgage market, but suggested the financial markets remained “bogged down by unease.” Troubled news continues to flow from the financial sector as the second largest U.S bank, Bank of America Corp., reported a 77% drop in Q1 profit brought about by US$6bn of credit write-downs. I will be returning to regular blogging once finals are over and I'm back from my trip. I apologize if you're expecting lots of well thought out posts or grand ruminations on the state of science fiction or fantasy in the world of literature. Finals are, to put it simply, somewhat more difficult this quarter than last considering that I actually have tests this time around, instead of essays. I am, by nature, far better at writing essays than taking tests because I feel I have more to offer from a writing perspective--when it comes to the material read--than I do from a memorization perspective. I learn far more from forcing myself to write essays than I do from forcing myself to cram information into my head that will, in a few months past, be largely forgotten. As such, I am generally against the idea of testing beyond quizzes or the occasional refresher to make sure one is actually reading. | | Fly fishing England | | 2008-02-27 19:48:53 | | There is no doubt that England has some great fly fishing opportunities. The lakes and rivers are some of the most pristine environments you can imagine and are often specially manicured for fishing access.Target speciesThere are two main fly fishing targets in England, trout and grayling, but there are many other available fly fishing targets that are less popular. There are some traditional non fly targets too that are waiting for someone to catch on a fly.Fishing techniquesMany fishing locations in England consist of small streams and lakes and while these are idyllic locations they can be a little bit tricky to fish. Remember that on small streams you wont need to make very long casts and you may need to use a shorter back cast on very narrow rivers. Another important factor to consider is that the water is very clear, which will require a stealth approach of quiet observation and stalking the fish. Fly fishing techniques like upstream dry fly and upstream nymph are the most popula | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog

The peer review process is used to vet papers before publication and is a cornerstone of the research world.

| | NEW YORK GIANTS UPSET THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS AND WIN SUPERBOWL XLII | | 2008-02-04 13:48:00 | | Yesterday in Arizona, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots for Super Bowl XLII. This was probably one of the biggest upsets in Superbowl history, because the Patriots had a record of (18-1) and hadn’t tasted defeat in more than one year. All throughout the game, the Giants gave the Patriots a taste of their unstoppable defense and the remarkable comeback with 35 seconds on the clock. | | The New England Patriots Are No Miami Dolphins | | 2008-02-01 20:54:00 | | The big game, “The Super Bowl”, is here and everybody is awaiting the best two teams of the NFL to engage in battle. But this will be no average championship contest, one of the teams has captured our attention. These New England Patriots have achieved something that no other team has - except one other team - their nemesis - The Miami Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins(1972)Now these Patriots are a special bunch, this can easily be seen by any football spectator even if their knowledge of the game is a little shaky. This team wins so seeming effortless that you wonder if their opponent is really trying to defeat them. That’s how good the New England Patriots are, they have excellent players in every position. Here’s where the train goes off the tracks for this team and glorious NFL franchise: They are cheaters. | | HAPPY 2008...Bob Ryan's Take On The State Of Sports Euphoria Here In New England | | 2008-01-01 05:10:00 | | Well, it's Tuesday morning, January 1st, 2008, and that is actually the first time I've typed 2008, our NEW year. Will the new year hold many surprises for us? Will the Celtics continue to march through their NBA schedule while taking no prisoners? They sure have so far. Will those New England Patriots, the object of both love AND scorn throughout this nation of ours, win three more games and firmly establish themselves as one of, if not THE greatest football teams of all time? I don't know, but I am sure of one thing....January will be a fun month just because of them. And of course there are the Bruins, the also-rans, that team who has so far to go to recapture their "glory days." Bob Ryan, in an article from the Boston Globe last week (last year!), encapsulates all of those teams, including the three teams I call "my own," the Pats, the Celts and, of course, the Sox, OUR Sox. Here's a little bit of that aforementioned article, borrowed from the Boston Globe. Click on the title for the entire piece. Here you go...."It appears that allowing the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics to shower the sports fans of New England with victory after victory - with one championship secured, another very likely to follow, and a third now a reasonable goal - does not spoil any vast eternal plan whatsoever. The State of Our Teams is embarrassingly good."Peter here, and I say this. "SHOWER AWAY!" The entire article, which includes each team and their 2007 fortunes or MISfortunes, is an entertaining one. I'd love your comments, even though I know that some of you, if not most, will be sleeping late this morning after celebrating the arrival of 2008 with family and/or friends, maybe with a cold one or other type of adult beverage. It's ridiculously early right now anyways, with the arrival of dawn's first light not expected for more than 40 minutes. But this is the most peaceful time of the day for me, the hours between 6am and 7:15am....I always write my morning post and have it u | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | New England Patriots finish undefeated regular season 16-0! | | 2007-12-29 22:18:00 | | The Patriots have done it and have become the first team in over thirty years to finish the regular NFL season undefeated. The Giants played a close game, even holding the lead for a good amount of time, but when the final whistle blew, it was New England who had come out on top. The Patriots capped off a record breaking 2007 regular season with a 38-35 nail biter of a win. Tom Brady and Randy Moss became proud owners of all time single season touchdown records for their respective positions. Brady bested Peyton Manning's mark of 49 passing touchdowns in a single season. Moss topped Jerry Rice's all time mark of 22 receiving touchdowns when he brought in a 60 yard bomb from Brady. The Patriots also set the single season team record for points scored. The Patriots finish the season an unparralled 16-0, but the real test comes in the playoffs where they will have to contest with tougher competition. New England could be challenged by the Chargers, Jaguars, or be faced with another classic showdown against the Colts before likely being matched up against the Cowboys or Packers in the Super Bowl. The 2007 Patriots have staked their claim as one of the greatest teams in football history, but none of that means anything to the Patriots or their fans if they don't bring home another Lombardi Trophy. | | By: Sunrise on the Sufferbus | | |

| | Poll Update: England Outlook For World Cup Qualifiers And Beyond | | 2007-12-12 21:50:00 | | With Fabio Capello reportedly set to take over the England manager job vacated by Steve McClaren, now is as good a time as any to close two concurrent polls Soccer Source has been running for the past fortnight. The polls asked readers to predict where England will finish in their qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup and inquired if the Three Lions "will win a World Cup or European Championship in your lifetime?"I originally intended the mini survey to gauge England fans' moods after their team's historic collapse against Croatia. But it soon occurred to me that this method was flawed on several levels: there was no way to limit participation to England fans and the "your lifetime" bit was by definition subjective--and potentially self-fulfilling, if particularly distraught fans decided to take their lives into their own hands in the near future (a very real concern, judging by what was portrayed in the country's media. The recommendations are cost-effective levels of insulation for this area.Ceilings/Attic = R38 to R49Walls = R11 to R22Floor = R25Basement / Crawl Space Walls = R11 to R19Most states (NH for sure) require that new homes that are built meet certain energy code minimum values. The minimum values are based on the recommendations for the U.S. Department of Energy. In NH, the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission oversees the compliance of the state energy code requirements. Most states, towns and government bodies require that the energy code compliance be issued as part of the building permit process. | | Fergie happy to help England’s hunt | | 2007-11-30 09:39:46 | |
Twenty-four hours after it was confirmed Ferguson would be among a hand-picked group of football men FA chief executive Brian Barwick would talk to over hiring Steve McClaren's successor, the United boss accepted he had a part to play. There might be a certain irony in such a fiercely patriotic Scot speaking on St Andrew's Day about helping England but, after 21 years as United boss, Ferguson knows his experience can prove invaluable as Barwick begins the hunt for a man who can restore the fortunes of a national team who so miserably failed to reach Euro 2008. "Obviously, I will try to help the situation," he said. "A lot of people want to do that because it is important to our game that England get the right man to replace Steve and try to drive the team on. "It is not easy to get international managers. It is not an easy job and it is not an easy selection process. "No-one at the FA has spoken to me and I don't know if they will or not but there is nothing wrong with them askin | | By: Worldwide Sport News
