On June 5th, Alain Robert (aka French Spiderman) boldly scaled the 52-story New York Times building in Times Square to call attention to global warming. This afternoon, he climbed the 32-story Dresdner Bank building in Frankfurt. No environmental activism or political intervention behind today’s stunt, though. It’s all legal, secure (Robert wore a safety harness) — [...]

    Top 10 Emerging Environmental Technologies
    2008-06-09 01:28:03
Just because you're concerned about climate change doesn't mean you have to live in a yurt in outer Mongolia. You can be passionate about the Environment, without strapping yourself to a whaling ship or using yourself as a human shield against bulldozers that mow down old-growth trees. All it takes are a few smart, fuss-free choices to make the change you wish to see in the world, while rejuvenating your body, home, and planet at the same time. Choosing green might even save you some green in the process. This list of ten is by no means exhaustive, but it's a righteous start. One Bright IdeaIf you're going to do just one thing for the planet, make it the switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Although they cost several times more upfront than regular incandescent light bulbs, they also last about 10 times longer, which means that for every CFL you screw in, you'll be saving eight incandescent light bulbs from landfill purgatory. Plus, you'll save some serious cash in the lon

TÜV picks the Kia cee'd for latest environmental certificates
    2008-04-30 06:07:00
In the process of creating and building the Kia cee'd, Kia has won two environmental certificates from the well-known German institution TÜV. At a ceremony in Seoul, Korea on Friday, TÜV gave Kia DFE (Design for Environment) and a LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) certificates for the way Kia is building the cee'd in Zilina, Slovakia. The DFE award certifies that the car was environmentally designed and developed. The LCA takes a broader look, and is given to vehicles that have a lower lifetime environmental impact. TÜV certificates for green cars are not often awarded; when the 2008 Mercedes C-Class won a similar certificate from TÜV last year, it was just the second such certificate for a car, ever.Press Release:Kia cee'd receives environmental green light from TÜVKia Motors has been presented with two international certificates which recognise the advanced environmental design and manufacturing processes behind the Kia cee'd.Globally recognized, German-based, TÜV presented Kia with

CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) And Environmental Issues
    2008-04-24 08:55:44
CFL (Compact fluorescent lights) bulbs are seen as an environmentally friendly replacement for incandescent lights. But are they really as good for the environment as claimed? The two issues often raised as arguments against using CFL's are1 - It requires more energy to manufacture a CFL than an incandescent lamp.2 - CFL's contain mercury which can potentially end up polluting the environment. The first issue is fairly easily answered in that even though they do require additional energy to manufacture; this is soon offset as CFLs last a lot longer than incandescent bulb.On this issue of mercury pollution I have summarized some of the for and against points of view below:Arguments For CFL'sOverall mercury emission by compact fluorescent lamps is less than the mercury released into the atmosphere by coal-fired power generation for an equivalent incandescent lamp over the same period. This assumption is based on the electricity generated to run lighting in your local area being generated

Should A Global Climate Agreement Hold The US To A Higher Environmental Standard
    2008-03-12 11:18:53
Yes, the US should be held to a higher environmental standard than the rest of the world. We have benefited from a superior economic growth powered by consumption of a major share of the world's fossil fuels, causing a major share of the world's environmental pollution. We are technically equipped to lead toward a higher environmental standard. Currently, however, it would be a major challenge for the US to assume this leadership role. We will have to wait for a new administration that, hopefully, will want this role for us.The Bush administration has continued to reject actions to reduce global warming pollution. It has refused to require cuts in heat-trapping carbon dioxide pollution, significantly raise fuel economy requirements, or hold companies accountable for improving their energy efficiency using wind, solar and other renewable energy sources. In his final FY2009 budget request, President Bush accurately reflected his administration's low priority for environmental help.Again,

Indonesia: Muslim values in line with environmental concerns, say scholars
    2007-11-16 02:50:00
AKI - Scholars who met in the Indonesian capital Jakarta to discuss Islam and the environment, have concluded that Muslim values support Indonesia's efforts to face its environmental challenges. The dialogue was held on Wednesday at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) in cooperation with the British Embassy in Jakarta. The director of the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences (IFEES) in England, Fazlun M. Khalid, said that in contrast to common misperceptions, Islam was more than a ritualistic religion; Islam also provided universal values that underlined the importance of maintaining a balanced interaction with nature. He said Islamic teachings helped position human beings as the khalifah or administrative deputies of God on earth."Ulemas in Indonesia are way ahead ... in translating the sharia into fatwa (religious edicts)," he said. Khalid also said Indonesian ulemas issued many Islamic edicts that affirmed various environmental problems, including

Blog Action Day : Environmental (Save The Earth!)
    2007-10-15 14:57:00
I love this phrase, “What would happen if every blog published posts discussing the same issue, on the same day? One issue. One day. Thousands of voices.” Yep! I have join in the “blog action day” and today I’m going to write my first “blog action day” post. If you know about the “blog action day”, you know they would like us to donate our Google ads earning for today. OK, so for today. If on the 15th of October 2007, my google adsense for today hit $10, THEN I’M GOING TO DONATE IT. I’ll donate the full sum. And no spammers please. Please don’t click on the ads 1000 times just so to make me donate 10 bucks. Click only if you see ads that “interest” you. I dun wan Google banning me. Today, we are talking about the environment. I’m gonna write a very long post, so make sure you read them. I’ll try to solve the wordy problems by finding pics. Hope you don’t mind ar. When I think about saving the environment, it always links me back to the 3Rs.Reuse, Reduce And Recycle. Honestly, I think they are useless. Let’s go through them briefly because I know a lot of people know this.Reuse Ok, we Reuse stuff like plastic bags, paper bags and plastic bottles. But we still have to throw them away someday. And using plastic bottles harms our body overtime, so it’s not advisable to do so. But reusing paper bags and plastic bag is a good way of help the environment. Have lots of rough paper? Use both side of that piece of paper. Are you a student practicing maths? Lemme teach you a trick. In maths, you need to practice like hell right? The 1st time you write both sides with a pencil. Then, you write over the pencil marking with a green pen. Because the green pen has a very light color, you can use a black pen/marker to write over it. Reduce Why Reuse and Recycle when you can Reduce? The next time, you go shopping for groceries, bring your own bag! Stop using the un-classy plastic bag they give you. You can always use a “save the earth” message bag.And if you only need a drink, avoid taking a plastic bag or even a straw. Save plastic! When you go for BBQ, do you find yourself with a lot of leftover plastic utensils? Do you find people changing utensils like there’s not tomorrow? Stop buying those extra plastic bowls and plates. Not to forget those plastic fork, knife, spoons and the wooden chop sticks. Reduce them! Buy just enuff for the people that are coming and only give one set of utensils for each person. Recycle You can reduce and reuse, but it will end up in the dump. Now is the time to recycle! When Reuse and Reduce can’t help, we need to recycle. Like papers could be made into lower quality rough paper or even the toilet rolls. Recycle is the ultimate solution! By using the 3Rs, we are making the product itself outlives it’s usefulness for a very long time. It’s just like nasty Bosses who squeeze every ounce of energy from their workers just to make sure they earn the maximum profits and work done and with the minimum expenses. But the 3Rs are not enough. Why? Let me ask you a few question. Are the manufacturers gonna cut down lesser trees because you use lesser paper? Are they gonna make lesser plastic utensils because you reduce your usage? Are they going to manufacture less can and bottled drinks because you quit soft drinks? Most probably not unless NOT a SINGLE living SOUL uses the product they produce. So we need more than the 3R. What can we do to help earth? Hmmmm, Water. One of the most precious resource on earth, you think you can abuse it because water will rain down from the sky? Wrong! If we continue to abuse water, it’s gonna deplete someday. How can you help? 1. Stop those drips! Every time you let a drop of water drips, you are wasting water! You can waste 20 gallons of water a day just because that tap is faulty and that leaking toilet will cause you 90k gallons of water a month. Stop being selfish and go repair your faulty faucet before it drains all the water in the world. 2. Water saving equipment, myth or fact? Hmmm, personally… those dual flush and low volumes flushing system doesn’t work for me. Because when they use lesser water, they don’t clean off your waste and the smell linger. In the end, if you can stand the smell (o.o), then you can just flush it in 1 go after you use the toilet a few times. =.=''' Yucks! Or even better, heard of the family that drinks urine? You can follow their tradition. It’s said that by drinking/bathing/washing our own urine, we get healthy. (Not for the faint hearted). But all in all, the water saving shower heads actually helps to reduce water, so get the right and useful equipments and not those useless ones. 3. Bottled water and drinks Compare to water, they are less healthy. Not only do they harm you, they harm the environment. Their left over bottles and cans create waste. Water that came from Wadeva Mountains is probably just some crap they made up! Truth is, 70% of the mineral water out there is tap water. Just drink your healthy plain old water will ya? 4. Harvest that free water! Free? Excited? Lol? Remember how your grandmas used to collect that rain water? Remember those times they saved up the water they used after they mop the floor or those rice water? This water is absolutely free and you can collect them and use it to water your plant. Don’t waste it! 5. Are you evil? It’s upbringing and habits that helps the environment too. If you have good water habits, you won’t need someone to remind you to turn off that tap, to save water, to take shorter show, using cups when you brush your teeth. Simple stuff like that contributes and that really helps. Of course, if you are not a super big villain, then I’ll not be expecting you to pour chemical wastes into the oceans or rivers. I also hope you won’t litter in the lakes and seas. This way, we have less pollution and more clean water to use! Just remember, water is our source of life. So shouldn’t we preserve our life? Electricity! Definitely something we need in this modern time. But do you know that producing electricity with coal is harmful to the earth? Yet coal is still the main way we produce electricity and that’s not very good. So let’s save some energy from electricity. 1. Control yourself! When you are at home alone, do you switch on your Computer, TV, Air-Con, every single lamp you have at home? Don’t overuse what you can! Remember to switch off anything you are not using and don’t on every other things for the sake of running it. 2. Air-Con Probably the best invention ever, Air-con has changed our life greatly but it’s heating the earth not cooling it. When you are using the air-con it’s advisable to keep the temperature at 25 degrees to save electricity. And you know, if the weather isn’t really that hot.. why not use a ceiling fan? A ceiling fan can cool your room temperature by 2 -3 degrees. 3. Energy Efficiency Nowadays, Electrical appliances that we use are running on different energy consumption rate. Seek the most efficient energy saving appliances to save more electricity, you don’t want to waste energy you are not using, don’t ya? 4. Reduce! Whenever energy is consumed, our pocket starts to burn till there’s a hole. Electricity cost us a bomb every month right? So we should reduce using it. In the afternoon, try not to switch on the light. Are you still using your washing machine to dry your clothes? Why not try Mother Nature’s solution? The breeze and wind dries your clothes without a sweat and the best of all, it’s free! In fact, we’ll even bundle in the Sun to help dry your clothes too! *Disclaimer* Products not available for use on rainy days. Electrifying huh?Let's hope some other source can take the baton from coal! Maybe the wind energy?but the wind energy is so dependent on the wind! what if there's no wind? How about The Solar energy?but then It's limited to only the day and it's not able to fulfil the amount of energy human use.Surely we know, the earth is dying… Global warming is killing me… the temperature is rising so high… I dun wan the North Pole and South Pole to melt! Let’s work together and save the earth yea?

October 15, is Blog Action Day , and the theme this year is "environment".Joanne of Laidback Buddhist, pointed me out about the Blog Action Day. I've been planning to write a short post about a beach near my hometown, in north-east of Surabaya, Indonesia. There is a small population of fishermen, where all the people depending so much to find living from the seashore until 5 kilometers far of radius from it. The fisherman community would about to vanish in another 5 years or shorter. It was started when the local government decided to build 10 km Highway Bridge to connect the main island of East Java, Indonesia to a small island called Madura. According to one of the fishermen community member, they are now can hardly find fish and their income has been decreasing ever since. The sea environment was destroyed by the massive highway development.Read More

    Environmental 5S
    2007-09-15 21:07:49
How can 5S contribute to helping the environment? Well … Painting the machines and the equipment light colors and cleaning the windows, often done under the Shine pillar, decreases energy needs associated with lighting. Painting and cleaning makes it easier for workers to notice spills or leaks quickly, thereby decreasing spill response. This can significantly reduce waste generation from spills and clean-up. The removal of obstacles and the marking of main thoroughfares decreases the potential of accidents that could lead to spills and associated hazardous waste generation (e.g., spilled material, absorbent pads and clean up materials). Regular cleaning, as part of the Shine pillar, decreases the accumulation of cuttings, shavings, dirt, and other substances that can contaminate production processes and result in defects. Reduction in defects has significant environmental benefits (e.g., avoided materials, wastes, and energy needed to produce the defective output; avoided ne

    Environmental risks?!?! Grrmph!
    2007-09-10 05:08:26
IIPM AlliancesGuess what! Companies are now refusing to reveal environmental risks! Now that the climate change discussions have moved from controversial to conventional, and economists expect the world to lose a mammoth 2.6% in terms of GDP this year due to extreme weather events (in fact, the loss in regional GDP will be a killingly massive 6% for the developing and South Asian nations by 2100 – see B&E issue dated February 22, 2007), the question that surfaces is how deep, financially, will the cut be in the global corporate world?Digest this! The most famous and recent survey conducted on S&P 500 companies by US based Ceres, the leading coalition of environmentalists and institutional investors, found out that only a quarter of the respondents posses measurable emissions reduction targets and have decided specific time frames to accomplish the same. On the other hand, “Most companies in sectors with lower emissions, such as healthcare, retailers, and banks, have been largely unresponsive to the financial risks they face from climate change,” Ceres spokespersons bemoaned to B&E. In a benchmark fashion, by picking up the impact of hurricanes in 2005 as an example, while nearly half of S&P 100 companies reported definitely measurable impacts from these hurricanes, the losses related to ‘Katrina’ and ‘Rita’ in the third quarter of 2005 were estimated to be nearly $4.5 billion. Compellingly, top of the line companies like Bell South recorded a loss of $102 million for asset impairment and $136 million in other expenses. But now comes the most worrisome of all the findings of the Ceres survey. Analysts forecast that the impact on investors is going to be disastrous, especially for the long term ones, as most of the companies still do not provide any kind of climate risk disclosure to their investors, clearly ignoring the investors’ right to know the environmental risks attached with the company they are investing in. Astoundingly, nearly one thir

Canada's increased military presence in the Arctic poses environmental dangers
    2007-08-22 19:30:00
The Canadian Forces mounted four operations in the Arctic this year, one more than in 2006, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently promised to build a deep-sea port and military training centre to bolster Canada's claim over the region. Russia recently made its own move to assert its sovereignty over the top of the world by placing a flag beneath the North Pole. The federal government has carefully documented its stepped-up Arctic presence with official photographs on the National Defence website showing soldiers firing ammunition rounds.

Al Gore: More of an Environmental Disaster than a Compact Florescent Light Bulb
    2007-07-20 07:01:00
Al Gore was recently quoted saying, “There's an African proverb that says, ‘If you want to go quick, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ We have to go far quickly.” Well, by now the African people are thinking that Al Gore and his environmentalist lunatics can “Go f&%$ themselves.” It makes me sick to my stomach to think of the arrogance and ignorant condescension instilled in liberal elitists like Al Gore. In his latest scare tactic rhetoric he also spouted, “Worldwide atmospheric carbon has jumped from 280 to 383 parts per million in the last century; the polar icecaps are melting three times faster than anyone's direst prediction; China is on the verge of surpassing the United States for greenhouse gas emissions; bark beetles and wildfires are sweeping across Western forests; temperatures are climbing, sea levels rising, glaciers vanishing. By some estimates, humans must pull 30 gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere to have a shot at reversing such e

    2007-07-02 21:46:00
Subaru Marks Three Years of Zero Landfill- Subaru Sells 100,000th PZEV VehicleSubaru is celebrating its three- year anniversary of zero landfill status at its manufacturing plant, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) and the sale of its 100,000th PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions) vehicle. Both milestones reflect the long-standing commitment Subaru has to safeguarding the environment that so many of its customers avidly enjoy."We are pleased to mark these milestones," said Tomohiko Ikeda, Chairman, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. "At Subaru, we are committed to not only maintain an effective environmental management system, but also to integrate sound environmental practices throughout our business."The Subaru plant in Indiana sends nothing to a landfill. That means, if this press release was printed and not recycled, it would result in more trash sent to landfills than the entire Subaru manufacturing operations. The Subaru plant was the first US auto plant to achieve zero landfill

Environmental activism is a religious experience
    2007-05-16 09:47:00
Environmental activism is a religious experience. What else can explain the utter pointlessness of trying to "save" a world you believe arose by accident and is ultimately destined for destruction? The majority, or at least a very large number, of environmental activists are atheistic evolutionists who believe that life is the result of an accident that occurred billions of years ago. If life is an accident then so is the sun, and when the sun burns out a few millenia from now, all life will cease to exist. It will be as if nothing ever happened. All the environmentalists' efforts to prolong the inevitable will have been forgotten by...well, there actually won't be anyone left to remember! Apparently there really is a God-shaped hole that we all need to fill. Many people are filling this void in their lives by dedicating themselves to stopping climate change, an impossible task to accomplish on a planet that has been through several ice ages and periods of warm. At least

    Environmental problem here in Botswana
    2007-05-09 07:00:00
All AfricaPlastic bags are an environmental problem here in Botswana. They are not disposed of properly and they take years and years to breakdown - even in our scorching sun. The good news is that the government has passed legislation to try to make used shopping bags less of an eyesore, but some people fear they may be going about that task in exactly the wrong way. Instead of legislating that bags should be thinner so they would decompose more quickly, the government has raised the quality requirements for all plastic bags so each one will in fact last far longer...

Web-based tool to assess environmental impact of meetings now available

MeetGreen is the pioneer's choice for environmentally sound meetings. MeetGreen is a line of tools and certifications that give guidance for green meetings.Green meetings have been defined as a "meeting that incorporates environmental considerations throughout all stages of the meeting in order to minimise the negative impact on the environment."A small meeting may not seem important, after all what difference does a few dozen cups and napkins make? But think about what happens when it is on a large scale. For example, during a typical five day conference, 2,500 attendees will use 62,500 plates, 87,500 napkins, 75,000 cups or glasses and 90,000 cans or bottles. Plus there are all the greenhouse emissions from people travelling to and from the conference and paper and plastic waste from conference handouts.A typical 5 day conference for 2,500 attendees will use 90,000 cans or bottles, 750,000 cups and 87,500 napkins (Meeting Strategies Worldwide, 2003).Here are 10 top tips for green me

    Trash (environmental)
    2006-08-15 19:43:00
Recent publicity over nasty chemicals such as arsenic, lead and zinc in hundreds of millions of dumped cell phones highlights a side to technology that we'd rather not think about. People know that burning oil is polluting, but would converting to cleaner energy prevent the earth turning into a toxic waste dump? For example, if we had electric cars how long would the batteries last before being ditched? At a macro, and visibly interesting end of the junk problem I stumbled on photos of aircraft discarded in US desserts. Phantom fighter squadrons, 747's, Airbuses, B52 bombers and other assorted aero trash. We know that cars wear out but somehow it's hard to imagine someone tossing out a Boeing 747. Air travel is sublime and quick but an airliner is a big piece of space junk for the local tip. Even recycling when economically viable ultimately sends many of the most poisonous elements to landfills.Warren Snow, chairman of Zero Waste New Zealand, commented to me some time ago that external observation of our economic system would conclude that its entire purpose was to move natural resources to landfills as quickly as possible. One problem is the increasingly disposable nature of the gadgets we buy. A skill saw that costs forty dollars has a similar resource and energy cost to produce as one that costs eight hundred dollars. The forty dollar one may get biffed after a couple of years, whereas the eight hundred dollar saw may outlive its owner. A law of sales is that 80% of the market is at the bottom end, so despite the inherent wastefulness the forty dollar skill saw will be more popular. But maybe even worst than the things we buy are the things we don't buy. You will notice that packaging comes free with everything. In our grandparents day mum made lemonade and put it in a pitcher made of pottery or glass. Unless it was knocked over and smashed that pitcher might last twenty years. Now we drink 390ml of lemonade and we are left with a nice plastic bottle to get ri

New theory of environmental inheritance ('05 Press Release)
    2006-07-28 02:32:46
New research has provided evidence for 'environmental inheritance', a radical theory of transgenerational genetic adaptation proposed by Professor Marcus Pembrey of the Institute of Child Health, UCL in the mid 1990'sThe latest evidence challenges accepted thinking on genetic inheritance, suggesting that historic events can contribute to some common modern illnesses. The research, published by the Children of the 90s study based at the University of Bristol in collaboration with Umea University, Sweden, could have far-reaching implications for our understanding of modern health epidemics - such as obesity or cardiovascular disease.Conventionally scientists believe that how we develop as adults depends on two factors - the genes (DNA) we inherit from our parents, and the environmental influences, such as diet, lifestyle, exposure to pollution from conception onwards.Professor Marcus Pembrey, who is also head of Genetics at Children of the 90s, says that over the long term, the process of Darwinian evolution by random errors in DNA followed by natural selection ensures that the human race adapts to changes in our environment. But it takes very many generations. Now there is evidence for another mechanism which no-one had considered... some of the father's own experiences in his childhood are captured in some way by his sperm, so affecting the genes that he bequeaths to his descendants.[NB Although this is only a press release I've got at least one relevant technical paper which I'll be posting soon - when I find it!]14th December 2005technorati tags: research, theory, adaptation, marcus+pembrey, obesity, cardiovascular, disease, genes, dna, parents, diet, lifestyle, pollution, genetics, darwinian, evolution, natural+selection, environment, mechanism, sperm
