    2008-08-14 07:00:09
ESPN's Matt Mosley spent some time at Giants' training camp this week, and came away with some interesting stuff. Mosley had a very entertaining interview with general manager Jerry Reese. Here is Reese explaining what he saw as the main reasons the Giants are DEFENDING SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS. "We played as a team, and I give Tom Coughlin all of the credit for that. He changed some things about his approach, and the players responded to him." "We cut way down on our penalties last year. You can't beat yourselves with penalties." "In the playoffs, we won the physical battles. This is a physical, physical league and we were prepared for that. Mosley also had some thoughts about what he saw during practice on Tuesday. He promised more from his visit to camp Thursday, so be sure to check it out.

ESPN: The Dolphins offense is pathetic
    2008-07-09 23:15:05
That's right.  Read the headline above.  Because that's basically what the boys at Bristol are saying. They think the Dolphins offense is quite possibly the very worst in the entire NFL.  And this is despite the fact that the Dolphins, despite all their faults last year, finished tied for 26th in the league in points per game in 2007.  That means 5 offenses scored fewer points than the Dolphins did in '07 - despite the fact that this team had 3 different starting QBs, lost their best offensive weapon in week 7 to a torn ACL, and traded away their best receiver after just 6 games.  When you consider all those above variables and you also take into account the fact that this offense will likely be better in 2008 thanks to improved coaching and an improved offensive line - at the very least - I really don't understand how ESPN can make these assumptions. And that's exactly what they are: assumptions.  And we all know what happens when you assume things, don't

The Canessa CornerBy Kevin Canessa Jr.If you read this blog periodically — and if you’re a fan (or former fan) of the Imus in the Morning Program — chances are, by now, you’ve been through the gamut of emotions when it comes to April 2007. We all know what happened on a fateful day that month on the radio and on MSNBC.Of course, we all remember the outcries that followed the so-called “Rutgers Incident.” Whether it was Al Sharpton, Gwen Ifill … whomever … there were so many people who had an opinion on Imus, Sid Rosenberg and Bernie McGuirk it wasn’t even funny. And even more ironic is that for many who opined, a first-hand knowledge of the aforementioned and the kind of people they really are was non-existent.One of the people who cried out loud for Imus, Sid and Bernie’s heads was a woman by the name of Jemele Hill.OK — say it out loud.Who?Turns out she’s a columnist for ESPN.com and a periodic contributor to the all-time ESPN great show “Cold Pizza.” When

    Cuffs007 relays ESPN's camp review...
    2008-06-08 01:01:19
(Editorial Note: Cuffs007 compiled this from a Mini-camp review by ESPN. Thanks Cuffs!   -Collin) Training camp report from ESPN Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas are Some observations from the first workout of Jacksonville's minicamp: We'll have to wait and see how this truly plays out, but the trade for wide receiver Troy Williamson from Minnesota might turn out to be a steal. All the Jaguars had to give up was a sixth-round pick for a guy who had first-round talent when he came into the league. Williamson flashed that talent today, making several nice catches. He also talked after practice and it sounds like he's out to prove Vikings coach Brad Childress wrong. If Williamson and Jerry Porter can play up to their potential, the Jaguars suddenly could have a strong receiving corps, although Matt Jones, a first-round pick in 2005, still hasn't shown much and could be playing for a roster spot. In a nice gesture by all the Jacksonville coaches, they wore "AP Falcons'' hats

    ESPN's Gomez remembers roots
    2007-08-06 17:38:00
It’s always nice when somebody becomes nationally-known and still recognizes his roots.Take Pedro Gomez of ESPN for example. He’s been on the Barry Bonds beat for a couple of years now; an experience he can’t wait to get off as soon as Bonds hits another home run to break Hank Aaron’s all-time record.Gomez still remembers where he once was, though. Over the weekend, he reminisced about covering prep sports for the San Diego Union-Tribune in 1989-90.Rather than talk about the Bonds beat, he recalled covering the South Bay portion of San Diego.“Is George Ohnesorgen still the football coach at Chula Vista High School?” he asked.Actually, Ohnesorgen is now the principal at the South Bay high school. But it’s nice for Gomez to remember his South Bay days; even while being among the media circus of 300 people following the ultra-moody Bonds.

ESPN uses Philly Bar to film Jets MNF ad
    2007-07-17 11:30:14
From the Philadelphia Inquirer: It is 3 a.m. on Friday morning, and last call at Manayunk’s Liberties U.S. Hotel Bar & Grill was supposed to be an hour ago. There are no patrons tonight, or, at least, no ordinary ones. Instead the bar in the green heart of Eagles country is occupied by actors adorned in New York Jets gear, a bartender who’s only played the part in movies, and dozens of crew members working on everything from lighting to costumes to props. ESPN has taken over this modest Main Street nightspot, one of five sets in the Philadelphia area used for seven Monday Night Football commercials. “We chose Philadelphia for an authenticity standpoint,” said Jarrett Dube, an ESPN marketing manager. “Philadelphia is obviously a very big and well-known football market. . . . The people here are die-hard football fans.” In addition to Liberties, the commercial sites were McFadden’s at Citizens Bank Park; Finnegan’s Wake in Northern Libe

ESPN Still Sipping The Jets Kool-Aid | QB Rankings
    2007-07-10 04:28:30
Scouts Inc has a team QB rankings list. Not just the starter, but the depth also. 12. New York Jets You have to admire Chad Pennington’s perseverance. He came back with a throwing shoulder that has been surgically repaired twice and still played all 16 games in 2006. He is a cerebral QB with superior leadership qualities. He has an excellent touch and is a master at reading defenses and making plays in the short passing game. However, his lack of arm strength can tend to hinder his effectiveness. Defenders jump his routes and his accuracy has to be nearly perfect because it takes so long for the ball to get there. Backup Kellen Clemens is the QB of the future. He has better physical skills and arm strength, but he’s not quite ready to take over. Ex-Raider Marques Tuiasosopo will fill the No. 3 role and has solid NFL experience. Even if Pennington struggles in 2007, it is unlikely Eric Mangini would make a midseason change. …Nice to see Pennington complimented. He

"World Leader In Sports" Invokes Many, Many Other Four Letter Words Than "ESPN"
    2007-07-08 05:22:00
ESPN is no doubt the World Leader when it comes to sports. We know this because absolutely nothing even remotely considered a sport is left uncovered by the tireless sports journalists at the network. But it's not just the reporters, anchors and talking head opinionists (™ 2007, DLS) that should receive commendation. The program directors are true heroes as well.Because, without them, we would all miss the 2007 Bud Light USA Rock Paper Scissors League National Championship in Las Vegas, which aired Saturday night on ESPN2. That's right, rock-paper-scissors. Finally, ESPN has the courage to air a true athletic event which only the A&E network had had the balls to do in the past. Why waste time on a sport like ice hockey, which involves keen hand-eye coordination, well-developed leg strength and balance, a high level of aerobic endurance and a strong, physical body type? After all, hockey doesn't translate well to TV and just gets so boring. Not like golf or tennis, or NASCAR,

ESPN Showing The Jets Some Respect
    2007-07-06 23:30:00
In ESPN’s latest power rankings, Matt Mosley has the Jets checking in at 8th overall. 8. Jets-OK, here’s where I’m going to lose a lot of you guys, but bear with me. This team made it to the playoffs last season with a rookie head coach and some pretty lackluster rankings on offense and defense. I think the addition of running back Thomas Jones will have the Jets looking at an 11-win season. ..Personally, I like this ranking. It may be a little high, but I agree that we are a top-10 team. The Jets have gotten better since last season’s 10-6 record. Thomas Jones is huge for our offense, D’Brick and Mangold have a year under their belt and should improve, Pennington appears to be back at full-strength, and everyone is more familiar with Schottenheimer’s playbook. Hopefully our defense can step up also…

    Dater VS ESPN, Round 3
    2007-06-21 22:00:00
A day after the initial scandal created by Adrian Dater's now-infamous anti-ESPN rant on his blog at the Denver Post's web site, Greg at the AOL Fanhouse and Eric at OffWingOpinion have picked up the story. In the meantime, as everyone now knows, the rant and Dater's non-apology follow-up post have been removed from the Post site, the follow-up forever lost into the memory hole (I wasn't able to save that one before it was gone). But who's decision was it to remove the outbursts? According to Dater himself, it was a mutual decision by him and his bosses at the Post to remove the blog entries because he was "a little over the line probably." In an email he sent me today, he wrote:The one thing I do regret is naming individual names at ESPN. I just ticked off some names of reporters off the top of my head at that moment. I was trying to criticize in the collective sense, not the individual, so naming any names was dumb and I am sorry for that. And I'll let that be the final word on

Avs Beat Writer Says ESPN Blows Goats. Goats Not Available For Comment.
    2007-06-20 19:57:00
(Dater VS ESPN, Round 1)A couple of weeks ago, when I interviewed him about his book, Adrian Dater seemed like a pretty laid-back, friendly guy. Cool and calm, he responded to each of my silly questions and graciously humored a blogger he probably couldn't care less about. Today, though, the gloves are off. He's got an axe to grind with a little network called ESPN, and he's not afraid to let it all out:You can take your ESPN and all the alleged superiority that comes from being on it every day and you can shove it in that little space where there is very little sunlight, ever.Hmm, a classy way to get the ball rolling. He goes on:Do you hear me, ESPN producer schmucks? You didn’t break JACK SQUAT. Some real journalist at a newspaper broke that story. You’re nothing more than a bunch of pathetic piggybackers, trying to fool that gullible sports audience out there - of which you have legions of the duped tuning in daily. This is getting good.We newspaper people - the real journa

ESPN: Cubs Trade Barrett to San Diego
    2007-06-20 16:22:10
Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that the Cubs have traded catcher Michael Barrett to the Padres in exchange for catcher Rob Bowen, a minor league pitcher and cash. Steve Stone, appearing on the Mike North Show (WSCR Radio in Chicago), at 9:00 a.m. local time, confirmed that Barrett was being traded, saying he (Stone) had spoken to a friend who had gotten off the phone with Barrett just minutes before. Stone also said that a source told him the Cubs had become “frustrated” with Barrett’s inability to improve his defense over the past couple weeks, which led Stone to infer that the team was pursuing a deal. Stone pointed out that Jim Hendry avidly pursued Barrett during the catcher’s years with the Expos and that Cubs player personnel exec Gary Hughes was also a huge Barrett supporter, having drafted him when Hughes was employed in Montreal. Mike North further reported that according to rumors that WSCR was hearing, the Cubs would be receiving Bowen and set-up m

ESPN Columnist George Johnson Loves Mike Keenan, Too
    2007-06-15 21:09:00
The hockey writers at ESPN.com aren't too keen on the hiring of Mike Keenan to coach the Calgary Flames. Yesterday, Scott Burnside dissed him. Today, aloof and mustachioed columnist George Johnson chimes in with words that are slightly south of supportive:Yes, "Iron Mike" Keenan is back. Harder to get rid of than a zit a day before the prom. His authoritarian jackboots traded in for a pair of cow-pie clogged cowboy kickers, bringing his blunt, uncompromising, signature style to Calgary.Zits and jackboots. Now those are some lovely images to invoke, George. But Johnson isn't done, not hardly:Historically, his abrasive style has the shelf life of a wheel of unrefrigerated cave-aged Gruyere. He hasn't had success of any kind since commandeering the Rangers to that 1994 championship (a Cup that really belonged to Mark Messier , anyway). In subsequent pit stops in St. Louis, Boston, Vancouver and Miami, he got no closer to the Stanley Cup than during his days in charge at the Univer

ESPN and CBS Serve Up a Banquet of Baloney
    2007-06-04 06:56:00
I wish ESPN would just let Larry Rawson and Dwight Stones do their thing. They've forgotten more than I'll ever know about track and field and they would be fully capable of announcing a world-class meet in a world-class way if they were ever allowed to do so.Instead, the producers at ESPN insist on showing those stupid human-interest clips even when the subject (Anthony Famiglietti) of the feature story then proceeds to lose the race by over 50 (!) seconds, they keep cutting to commericals during the middle of longer races, they keep an Americacentric focus during post-race interviews even when the Americans lose (did you catch the way Lewis Johnson shoved Canada's Tyler Christopher aside after asking him a quick question or two about his fine 44.93 victory in the men's 400m dash so that he could focus on Lashawn Merritt?), and – worst of all – they insist on showing major meets like the Reebok Grand Prix on tape delay. Reebok, as it is every year, was a fine meet (5 world bes

Johnson To Retire; Already Offered Job at ESPN
    2007-05-23 20:35:14
So much for the comeback.  ESPN is reporting today that veteran wide out Keyshawn Johnson, who just was taken out of the picture of possibly joining the Raiders, will announce his retirement later today.  Johnson, an 11-year vet, had a few teams in the mix early on after he was released by the Panthers just after draft day.  Those teams slowy went away one by one, and in the end, about the only team that showed any true interest was the Tennessee Titans. Johnson and the Titans did meet, but according to sources, Johnson was not happy with what his role would have been on the team, as well as the fact that it did not look like he was going to get much of a salary, which he was upset about as more and more teams shyed away from him.  “He still played at a high-level last year. He takes very good care of himself,” Fisher said. “He hasn’t had any injuries per se. Anytime you get a chance to bring an experienced veteran in to add to your roster then it’s a

ESPN's Phillips looks like a genius
    2007-05-11 19:25:00
Credit Steve Phillips for looking like a genius thus far in 2007.The ESPN analyst more than went out on a limb before the baseball season when he picked Milwaukee to win the NL Central. At the time, I’m sure most of us were laughing. But look who’s laughing now (Phillips) with Milwaukee leading the NL Central by seven games over the Chicago Cubs.St. Louis was the obvious preseason pick in the division, coming off its 2006 World Series title. Houston can always be figured on to make a late-season run, and Cincinnati was hot most of last season. Then there are the Cubs who spent $300 million in the offseason; but are still the Cubs (see: losers).Hardly anybody could have rightfully picked Pittsburgh to win the division, which left Milwaukee as a solid choice to finish fifth.Obviously, Phillips saw something that the rest of us did not.
