Blogging Ethics-Can you be paid and be ethical?
    2008-07-02 14:52:00
Interesting question with an assumption you have ethics which often isn’t clearly demonstrated in many of today’s businesses. I guess it depends on what you write about and how honest you are in writing. As a retired, fixed income kind of guy, I look for things that can bring in gadget or book money without a great deal of sweat on my part. Since I am a technut and booknut, writing about that is a no brainer. Now to get paid for it would be exciting but am I hungry enough to ignore my conscience? I can answer that by the fact that I have been offered industry related jobs by former competitors since I sold my business. As enticing as some of the offers were, I declined as I had signed a non-compete agreement with the guy who bought my computer business. Several times I have been told that those agreements are impossible to enforce. That may be the case but since I agreed not to compete and I shook hands on that agreement, I “ethically” can’t ignore the agreement, regardless o

    The Ethics of Good News
    2008-06-25 10:00:00
I f a scientist discovered the cure for cancer, we would expect the discovery to be shared with the world. Basic ethics requires that good news not be kept secret. When the king of Syria laid siege to the city of Samaria, the food supply was cut off. Four men with leprosy, deciding it would be preferable to die at the hands of the Syrians than to starve, went to surrender to the enemy. But when they came to the camp, they found it deserted. The army had fled in the night.Food lay everywhere. The four men stuffed themselves, and they were tempted to remain silent about the good news. But then the memory of Samaria with as famished inhabitants came back to them. "We are not doing right," they said (2 Ki. 7:9). So they became evangelists bearers of good news-and told others. Ultimately, evangelism comes down to this: one starving person telling another starving person where to find food. You and I have discovered the salvation that is found in Jesus Christ. It is a breakdown of basic integr

FOUR councilors reject ethics proposal-- what are they afraid of?
    2008-05-26 08:52:25
Mike Plaisance did a nice piece of reporting yesterday in the wake of City Council's failure to pass an Ethics proposal, 's today in the wake of the faulure of an proposed ethics law which would have required financial and conflict of interest disclosures. It turns out that all nine of Springfield MA's city councilors have spouses or family members who work for a government agency, or they themselves do.Now, this isn't a bad thing per se. On the face of it, it simply means a family committed to public service. Making this information public-- and of course, it's no secret to those in the know anyway-- just puts potential conflict of interest issues aboveboard for all to see. Financial disclosure shouldn't be very controversial, either.Yet the Gang of Four-- Bill Foley, Tim Rooke, Jimmy Ferrera and Bud Williams voted against the ethics proposal, with reasons ranging from too much paperwork to protestations of honesty. The proposal was sponsored by Bruce Stebbins and Pat Markey and s

Possible Ethics Violation by Massachusetts Speaker of the House
    2008-05-03 06:20:43
There seems to be a trend in Massachusetts. Sal Dimasi, the Massachusetts speaker of the house, charges are beginning to surface about possible ethics charges. This would be the third straight Massachusetts speaker of the house to face an ethics probe. Three times a charm. The last speaker of the house, Tom Finneran, pled [...]

Reviewing Ethics: A Question For All
    2008-05-02 19:48:00
I have a question that I think needs answering from more people than just myself (which is why I'm asking the question):Is it unethical for me to enter into contests on a blog I do reviews for even if I'm told it's okay by the owner of the blog?I ask this question because SQT of F & SF Lovin' Book Reviews often has some really good little contests for free books. As most of you know I do reviews for that blog. So, while SQT says that it's okay for me to enter, I feel some apprehension because I have a feeling that there is something unethical about it. Some part of me doesn't feel right about entering those contests because I get this sense that I shouldn't be entering seeing how I'm a member of the reviewing crew. What do you think on this issue? Am I just being silly?(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

All the Candidate’s Men (or) Obama to Hammer Hil on Ethics?

THE BARACK & TONY SHOWFirst, you might want to bookmark the blog Rezkowatch.  I think it’s going to be very busy for awhile. Rick Moran has an excellent summary of all the Chicago-Style fun and games with Barack Obama’s little associates. Now there are allegations that Tony Rezko may have found jobs for more than a few of Barack Obama’s staffers.   Of course there are also allegations that Barack Obama is not being treated fairly by the media.   The big problem with that theory is it isn’t quite true. The one fortunate aspect of this is the fact ...

    Ethics in SEO Competition 2008
    2008-03-05 01:02:00
By the title of this post we dont mean the seocontest2008 thing we are messing about with at the moment, but we mean the competition we face in the SEO arena from other SEO Companies operating in our marketplace. We are now approaching full dominance (for the moment anyway) in almost all of our localised business target terms, except one. See SEO Demonstration for the list.In this particular phrase however, we are amused on an almost daily basis lately by the antics of one of our competitors who despite being an extremely good web design company with a string of great client websites out there, and an excellent link profile inbound from those websites giving them a PR5 main domain, are up to all sorts of funny antics. Most would likely not see this, but as we work across .com, .co.uk and .es we see a lot of different search results, and this company seem to have an identical domain for each engine and geographical location. With the resources they obviously have at their disposal, the

Moral Righteous Ethics Required on Human Research
    2007-12-07 03:59:00
by Adam Abdullah26 September 2006In this era of scientific advancement in the field of medical science, Muslim physicians and Islamic scholars need to establish clearly rules and guidelines concerning medical research on human. This was stressed at the 8th conference of the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences, where they urged medical nstitutions to take ethical principles into consideration when conducting biomedical researches on human beings.“All research involving human subjects should be conducted with three basic ethical principles, namely respect for persons, beneficence, if benefits outweigh harms and justice,” said Nazih Hammad, a member of the Islamic Fiqh Academy, an affiliation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).“The performance of research on human subjects is Islamically acceptable. However, it should be useful and responsive to the purposes of Islamic law including the safeguarding of one´s religion, life, intellect, progeny and property, and that it should cause harm to none of God´s creatures,” added Dr. Hossam E. Fadel, director of maternal foetal medicine, University Hospital, Georgia, USA.He stressed that in cases where less substantial instance of harm and an outweighing benefit are in conflict, the harm is forgiven for the sake of the benefit. Fadel regretted that medical research involving human beings have created “a lot of potential pitfalls” that led to tragedies in the last century. One of the overriding issues at the conference sessions was what doctors call the “informed consent,” meaning that medical research should be conducted at the consent of individuals. He/she, in other words, must have a prior and thorough knowledge of the nature of the research, so that they become “informed”. “It is a prerequisite for the validity of informed consent which an investigator must obtain from the subject that it should be given with full knowledge and correct understanding, on the part of the subject, o

    Corporate Ethics
    2007-11-27 05:23:00
Primarily, corporate ethics strategy embodies the ethical standards and values in an organization and the rationale upon how cold it be inculcated and maintained over time. Hence, it encompasses the two categories namely: compliance-oriented strategy and the integrity-oriented strategy. The real score of these can somehow help the organization gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of the employees on how they handle risk and how they adhere to the company’s commitment to ethics and compliance. To be effective, a certain company must obtain and procure these corporate ethics strategies specifically the integrity-oriented strategy, which focuses on self-governance according to guiding principles. This strategy also lies on the concept of organizational identity that includes not only commercial objectives, but also a set of organizational ideals and responsibilities.Ethical standards are inculcated and maintained through the organization’s central management systems, which encompass

Look who voted against ethics reform!!
    2007-08-02 18:11:00
The U.S. Senate passed the "Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007," by a vote of 83-14 today. The bill is a key ethics reform measure which now goes to George Bush for approval. No surprise though that all 14 "no votes" came from Republicans!!!! Who were they? Bennett (R-UT), Burr (R-NC), Coburn (R-OK), Cochran (R-MS), Cornyn (R-TX), Craig (R-ID), Crapo (R-ID), DeMint (R-SC), Ensign (R-NV), Graham (R-SC), Inhofe (R-OK), Kyl (R-AZ), Lott (R-MS), and McCain (R-AZ). So Presidential hopeful John McCain doesn't think Congress is in desperate need of ethics reform? Interesting. Let's review the key provisions of the measure via Politico: Requires disclosure on the Internet of lobbyist fundraising for lawmakers, including the amount of direct campaign contributions and bundled contributions and who raised them, as well as which lobbyists hosted fundraising events and how much was raised. Lawmakers must disclose the names of those lobbyists who have raised $15,000 or mo

    Healthcare Bloggers Code of Ethics
    2007-07-20 07:15:36
The HONcode is the oldest and most widely used ethical code concerning the quality and trustworthiness of medical and health related information available on the internet. It was created for evaluating medical and health websites and outlines eight ethical standards in the presentation of medical and health information online. To become HONcode accredited and display the HONcode seal, there is an application process and an annual review. The aim of the HONcode is to protect the reader by ensuring that they know the source and purpose of medical and health information they read on the internet. A new ethical code designed specifically for the healthcare blogger is the Healthcare Blogger Code of Ethics. The code allows the blogger to identify the standards by which they blog. The Healthcare Blogger Code of Ethics covers issues pertaining to confidentiality, privacy and commercial disclosure. It offers some protection for both the reader, in terms of blogger disclosure of credentials an

Blogging Ethics - Project I, Blogger
    2007-07-14 03:03:00
Desty Online has a project on the go that I think is well worth contributing to:Project: I, BloggerDesty is on a quest to discover what bloggers see as the universal ethics of being a blogger. He is visiting blogs, asking the question of as many people he can, and inviting his readers to give their views by commenting or contacting him via his blog. He is approaching this from the perspective of individual bloggers themselves; what they think is the acceptable way to behave and how they act accordingly, rather than what they perceive to be any hard or set rules on the matter. Desty's latest update on the project can be read at Project: I, Blogger UPDATE!. I wrote a post a while ago on what I consider to be my blog etiquette, Betiquette, which touched on the subject of my own blog ethics. If you are going to contribute to Desty's study and read other articles on the subject, I suggest you try not to be influenced by what you read but give some thought to what you think yourself. How

Token Ethics Bill Passed in the House
    2007-05-26 00:02:21
Ethics Legislation Easily Passes HouseBy Elizabeth WilliamsonWashington Post Staff WriterFriday, May 25, 2007; A01Prodded by Democratic leaders and by freshmen elected partly on promises to clean up Washington, the House approved new ethics legislation yesterday that would penalize lawmakers who receive a wide range of favors from special interests, and would require lobbyists to disclose the campaign contributions they collect and deliver to lawmakers.Party leaders and new lawmakers worked until the day before the vote to sway some longtime members who had balked at the proposals. It took weeks of persuasion by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other key lawmakers to convince recalcitrant Democrats -- among them some members of the speaker's inner circle. The new proposals, which in the end passed overwhelmingly, would expand the information available about how business is done on Capitol Hill and make it available online. They would provide expanded, more frequent and Internet-acce

What are the ethics involved in property management companies also providing maintenance and repairs?
    2006-08-30 16:20:07
What are the legalities involving a property management company (pm) that charge you a low management fee but have an in-house maintenance and repair company? In my opinion this is a bait and switch concept. Though not illegal it could be unethical especially if any profit derived from the maintenance company is not disclosed to the owner. Property managers are licensed by the state and owe the owners a fiduciary obligation, which means in simple terms to act in a position of trust for the benefit of the principal (owner).

Does Anyone Care for Business Ethics?
    2006-06-01 14:28:00
As the businesses become globalize, the competition intensifies at the same time. Mergers and acquisitions become in common in order to capture the market share. The size of a company becomes matter. The pressure to increase bottom line from the shareholders and the environmental changes are rapidly affecting day-to-day corporate business decisions. Yet, investors rely on companies' business ethics and honest marketplace.Since the Enron, Tyco, and Tenet Corporations have become a fraudulent symbol of American corporations, many companies business conducts have been in question and forced to make significant changes in their business practices. Some companies built their businesses under 'doing a right thing' and lived by their ethical principles. Now a day, 'doing a right thing' is not an option, it is a must. However, it is a challenge and requires discipline thinking and courage particularly in the business world. It must apply ethical policies from the executives to the bottom of the
