Low Cost Bus Services in Europe
    2008-05-10 20:28:00
The abundant supply of low cost airlines in Europe has created the situation whereby flying can work out cheaper than getting the bus to some places. To counter the competition from the airlines, low cost bus services have started up across Europe. Traditional bus companies have also answered the call, offering cheap bus fares in the same manner that low cost airlines sell tickets. Here are some low cost bus deals for travel in Europe.U.KIt's no surprise that the leading country of low cost airlines in Europe should also lead the charge for low cost buses.Megabus offer bus tickets across Britain starting at £1, plus a 50p booking fee. The booking facility works like an airline booking service, so the earlier you book, the cheaper the ticket. Megabus is operated by Stagecoach, who also operate a train franchise in the UK, so as a bonus you can also book £1 tickets on their train services as well.Competition from Megabus stimulated the national bus service National Express into

Microsoft Appeals $1.4. Billion Fine by Europe
    2008-05-10 05:59:58
Microsoft asked Europe’s second-highest court to overturn or reduce a record fine of 899 million euros ($1.4 billion) from the European Union. The appeal was filed at the European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg, a Microsoft spokesman, Jesse Verstraete, said in an e-mailed statement. The European Commission, the E.U.’s antitrust authority, fined the company on Feb. 27 for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust order. Under that decision, in which Microsoft was fined 497 million euros, the E.U. ordered the software maker to provide data to rivals to allow servers to connect to the Windows platform.http://www.nytimes.com

Some Positive Feedback from Europe (Part II)

I received a comment from a gentleman living in Austria on Youtube that confirms that we are just all humans who will, at one point or another, wind up mixed in with “the hype”. Europe namely NATO must commit more to Afghanistan
    2008-05-09 05:41:00
Al-Qaeda may pose a threat to the U.S. however, the rise of Islam in Europe means that the continent has at least as much to lose with the terror group gaining a safe haven in Afghanistan. In order to combat a resurgent Taliban and al-Qaeda, the United States recently announced plans to send an extra 7000 troops to Afghanistan, conversely pledges made by Europe remain disappointing, as NATO members remain reluctant to pursue the same course. The problems appear to stem from a difference of opinion in relation to the success or otherwise of operations in the country. In spite of some 50,000 troops already there, the Taliban is still a force to be reckoned with, fuelled by the advantage of being able to disappear within the local population between operations. While not a crises, the situation is getting worse. NATO defense ministers have dismissed suggestions of failure or lost ground instead insisting that progress was being made. At a recent meeting in Lithuania, the ministers made it c

Some Positive Feedback from Europe (Part I)
    2008-05-09 01:36:52
In my last post, I asked some questions. If you are European or Canadian and aren’t Anti-American (see definition), can you have friends that are Anti-American and visa versa? Can you speak about any positive feelings about the US publicly in your country? How about Australians? Or New Zealanders? I’d be most curious. A gentleman who lives [...]

    9 May: Europe Day
    2008-05-08 19:36:00
Throughout Europe, 9 May is recognised as Europe Day, and marks the anniversary of the day in 1950 that the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech (Read here Schuman's declaration) calling for European countries to combine their coal and steel production under a single European institution, as "the first concrete foundation of a European federation".

Most Europe Markets Fall After Rate Decisions
    2008-05-08 13:46:39
LONDON - Most European stock markets ended lower Thursday, as the European Central Bank and the Bank of England kept interest rates on hold as they flag up inflation concerns in a period of record oil prices. The pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index closed a fraction of a percentage point lower to 329.28, with banks across Europe lower as the major central banks held rates unchanged. In London, shares of U.K. mortgage lender HBOS fell 1.2% and Barclays declined 2.5%, lower after the Bank of England kept rates on hold at 5%, a move that generated mild disappointment for investors hoping for a rate cut to shore up an ailing housing market. Likewise, the European Central Bank held its key interest rate steady as worries about euro-zone inflation outweighed concerns over an economy whose growth appears to be stalling. Jean-Claude Trichet, the ECB's president, emphasized in press conference after the rate decision that inflation risks rem

Audi's new TT TDI is going on sale this spring in Europe
    2008-04-30 06:14:00
Audi announced their first diesel-powered production sports car back at the Geneva Motor Show in March and now it's going on sale. At least European drivers get a crack at the new TT TDI. The compression ignition version of the TT is powered by the 170hp version of the VW group's 2.0L TDI four cylinder. That's the same engine used in the new Jetta TDI Cup race cars. With this engine and a six-speed DSG gearbox, the TT coupe is rated at 44.4mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined cycle. The TDI gets to 62mph in 7.5 seconda and emits carbon dioxide at the rate of 139g/km. The heavier, less aerodynamic roadster model does only slightly worse at 42.8mpg and 144g/km. Unfortunately, American fans of the TT won't have the opportunity to experience this mileage for a while, if ever. The diesel-powered coupe will run buyers in Germany €34,850 while the roadster costs € 35,900. The TT TDI goes on sale this spring.Ingolstadt, 2008-04-28Performance and efficiencyThe Audi TT TDIPurist sportiness and comp

Europe Firm On Rates As U.S. Plans Cuts
    2008-04-28 17:00:32
LONDON - The European Central Bank has stuck to its guns by not cutting rates, but its received mounting pressure from rising inflation and little impact on prices. Meanwhile analysts in the United States are anticipating a quarter-percentage point rate cut on Wednesday. The European Commission warned that it expects inflation within the 15 nation euro zone to rise to 3.2% for the year. This adds to pressure on the European Central Bank to refrain from a confidence-boosting interest-rate cut.The euro slid to $1.5623 on Monday afternoon in New York from $1.5635 in late Friday trading in New York. The euro's 15.0% rise against the dollar over the past year is particularly painful for the continent's manufacturing companies, whose already-high labor costs rise relative to those in other currency zones. In its semi-annual forecast, the Commission said that soaring prices of food, oil and metals would raise the cost of producing other goods, sending inflation soaring well above l

iPhone : ça bouge en Europe

Radicalization on the web in Europe

European authorities are taking very seriously the threat of radicalization over the web. I just wrote an article for the Middle East Times on that topic. Here's some good news for Europe. The Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4 has been pulled forward to give it a simultaneous release worldwide. COD4 fans will be able to get their hands on it this Thursday, April 24th.As a result, the double XP weekend has also been brought forward and will commence at 12:01am GMT on Friday and finishing at 11:59pm PDT on Sunday. Because of the time difference, this means an extra 8 hours of double experience."Play with Infinity Ward" day is now Friday April 25th and members of the team will be playing between the hours of 11am and 2pm PDT as well as between 5pm and 8pm PDT. Sounds like fun to us, we'll almost certainly be playing. Our only question is, if Konami finally gets their act together and begins the MGO beta on Friday, how do we choose between them? It's going to be a busy weekend.

    Europe's Road Ever More Difficult
    2008-04-14 10:52:27
Several pieces today tie together to forma disturbing mosaic. The first two are the growing threat of radical Islam in Great Britain and the penetration of the structures of several elite universities there. The second is the new report by the NEFA Foundation on the Muslim Brotherhood structure in Belgium. The most disturbing to me is a report that Britain's Home Secretary Jaqui Smith believes the police are being overwhelmed by the growing threat of radical Islam in Britain. "There are 2,000 individuals...(read more)

Breaking News: Ford of Europe declares independence!
    2008-04-13 20:19:00
In an unexpected development we got to the knowledge that last night the European branch of Ford declared independence. According to our sources the situation was triggered during a transatlantic videoconference meeting between the European and American top bosses to discuss the implementation of the new Fiesta as a global vehicle. Things started on a wrong note when the American crew asked for “more and bigger cupholders”, but reportedly it was when they requested “a bigger grille with more chrome” that an angry German-accent voice was heard: “zwe are tired of your inability, zwe are the ones that make profit, zwe don´t need you, zwe are now independent and zwe vill prevail!..”. The Americans were quick to react and threaten to sue, pursue and generally kick butts everywhere but at that point the Germans were pumping Euro dance music through the videoconference speakers… several Americans simply collapsed with the atrocious sounds. The declaration of independence by Ford

Super Swing Golf teeing off in Europe this June
    2008-04-12 17:57:23
Manga-fied golf title Super Swing Golf (or, as U.S. readers may know it, Super Swing Golf: Season 2) will be appearing in terminally neglected Europe this June 27th, courtesy of Rising Star Games. As most Americans may well have already played/completed/traded in/completely forgotten about Tecmo's criminally under-rated golf game (it launched stateside back in December), it probably won't hurt to remind you that there's plenty of mascot cameo goodness, and quite a lot of a very serious sport not being taken seriously in the slightest. Which is for the best, really.[Via press release]

Operation Darkness: will it ever see release in Europe?
    2008-04-10 19:43:00
Operation Darkness Inserito originariamente da Abriael Operation Darkness is a tactical RPG by Atlus released last year in japan on Xbox 360 and slated for release in the US in June. The game isn't groundbreaking graphics-wise, but the pairing between the World War 2 setting and classical fantasy/horror cliches make it an interesting title, expecially due to the the solid story, that revolves around the assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler. The characters are quite interesting too, even if in the US website many haven't been introduced yet, it's quite noticeable that the heroes are a sort of "legacy of extraordinary men", sporting, between the others, Jack the Ripper, Van Helsing (in female form, actually) and Herbert West (coming straight from an H.P. Lovercraft novel). But the true question is, will the game ever see an European release date? Combining Germany's absolute terror for any kind of media that displays Nazi iconography (there are even laws against it) with Atlus poo

    A Giant Mosque in Europe
    2008-04-01 06:15:00
The Brussels Journal -- The Regional Council of Alsace (France), consisting mainly of UMP members, voted in favor of a 420,000 euro subsidy for the construction of the Grand Mosque of Strasbourg. The UMP is President Sarkozy’s party. The Concordat is a special agreement decreed by Bonaparte dating from 1801 that grants public status to religion, and that permits priests to be paid by the State. In 1801, Alsace was part of France. However, when in 1905 the law separating Church and State went into effect in France, Alsace was part of Germany. After WWI Alsace again became French but never renounced the Concordat.

Why Has Milk Been Banned At WalMart and In Europe?
    2008-03-31 07:36:00
Milk: America’s Health Problem. I've been buying unpasteurized (raw) milk for my family for some time. Not because of the information you will read here, I didn't even know about this until recently. I just know pasteurized milk is not as good as "the real thing."Why is American Milk Banned in Europe?American dairy milk is genetically-modified unless it’s labeled “NO rBGH”Genetically-engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk increases cancer risks.American dairy farmers inject rBGH to dairy cows to increase milk production.European nations and Canada have banned rBGH to protect citizens from IGF-1 hazards.Monsanto Co., the manufacturer of rBGH, has influenced U. S. product safety laws permitting the sale of unlabeled rBGH milk. (Monsanto would lose billions of dollars if rBGH were banned in America.)Is there any milk not contaminated with rBGH and IGF-1?Yes. Milk that is clearly labeled “NO rBGH” is free of rBGH and does not contain excess levels of IGF-1.What about c

Ford Europe’s ECOnetic vehicles selling well
    2008-03-22 17:57:38
Click the S-Max for a high-res galleryFord has already sold 3000 Euro-market Focus ECOnetic models prior to the vehicle's official on-sale date. Many of these units are headed to businesses interested in lowering their fleets' carbon footprints. Because of the low added cost, the vehicles are proving to be more popular than expected; popular enough that Ford is rethinking how many ECOnetic Mondeos that they need to make. The Focus ECOnetic emits just 114 g/km of CO2, and the new Mondeo is rated at less than 140g/km.In other related news, Roelant de Waard, head of Ford U.K., says that an ECOnetic S-Max is a possibility, but don't expect any hybrids from Ford's outpost in Blighty. Instead, the EurOval is looking at stop/start technology and low-emission diesels, which have a proven track record of selling well in Europe.[Source: Business Car]

Will Russia Recognize the Georgia Breakaway Regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia? - NATO/U.S. Policy in Eastern Europe
    2008-03-21 20:32:23
Reuters: Russia MPs urge recognition of Georgia separatistsBackgroundGeorgia, a former Soviet colony, has two de facto independent states within it: South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Neither region is recognized by any country internationally. Both regions have strong economic and political connections with Russia, and Russia has peacekeeping troops in both regions. In other words, Russia has a lot of leverage in these two areas.Russian MPs voted unanimously yesterday to urge the Kremlin to recognize the two regions as independent if Georgia succeeds in its goal to join NATO. Russia has already decided to send more peacekeepers to both breakaway states. Why is Russia being provocative? There are four main reasons Russia flaunting its influence and being confrontational:• Possible NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine• Kosovar independence• American approval of new shipments of arms to Kosovo• The European missile shieldThe first impetus for Russia’s actions is the same impetus for

It also menaced the Vatican with retribution for an alleged role in incitement "against religion." This al Qaeda warning would have been normal in Salafi Jihad logic. Diesel taxes in Europe
    2008-03-17 11:12:13
"The European Commission says the wide variation in rates of diesel (officially known as gas oil) taxes creates distortions in the road haulage market – and also increases environmental damage by encouraging “fuel tourism” by hauliers (i.e. making special journeys or using longer routes in order to fill up in a country with low taxes). Also, since diesel and petrol have similar impacts, especially from the point of view of CO2 emissions, there is no environmental reason for the two minimum rates to differ. The Commission is therefore proposing to raise the minimum rate on diesel up to the minimum rate on petrol.""Adopting by 447 votes in favour to 64 against with 39 abstentions a report based on a draft by Olle Schmidt (ALDE, SE), MEPs agreed with this in principle, but said the minimum taxes on diesel should rise more slowly, from the current level of €302/1000 litres to the current petrol level of €359/1000 litres by 2015 rather than 2012. Here is an excerpt: Last November, Gilles de Kerchove, the European Union's anti-terror chief, said that al-Qaeda was the biggest threat to Europe. To confirm this, Western intelligence services have recently established operational links between al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and al-Qaeda in The Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) whose goals include striking at the heart of Europe. Easter in Eastern Europe
    2008-03-08 02:57:00
Easter in Eastern EuropeEaster's the most important festival throughout Eastern Europe, and food preparations begin in earnest during the week running up to Easter, known as Passion Week. An enormous range of pastries, cakes and biscuits are enjoyed during the Easter celebrations. Easter Saturday - a basket of food, known as the blessing basket, may be taken to the priest to be blessed. Only at that stage will people believe that Lent truly is over. This beautifully decorated basket is crammed full with symbolic foods such as a figurine of a lamb made from sugar (as a symbol of Christ, the Lamb of God), decorated coloured eggs (to represent resurrection), bread and salt (for prosperity and health - the bread represents hard work, the salt protects from rotting), meats and sausages (for bounty and fertility), and horseradish (which stands for the bitterness of Christ’s suffering). Easter Sunday - families break their Lenten fast by sharing a blessed egg, which is cut into sm

Tata to sell Nano microcar in Europe?
    2008-03-05 09:51:57
Tata to sell Nano microcar in Europe? When inexpensive microcars get unveiled, they usually don't garner much attention. But when that microcar is as revolutionary as the Tata Nano, the world takes notice. The Nano is so important, in fact, that the Indian automaker saw it fit to put its microcar on the world's stage at the Geneva motor Show. The Nano is here in Geneva for two main reasons: the first is to get even more media attention — since the Nano's unveiling was at a rather small event in India — and the second is to gauge European reaction. While Tata head Ratan Tata says there are no current plans to bring the Nano to Europe, he did admit that he would like to bring the premium edition of the car here eventually. The up-scale model features flashier wheels and an overall nicer interior, something Tata feels could appeal to some European buyers. However, since the Nano has the fit and finish and quality of materials you would expect to find i
