    Skirret - everlasting vegetable
    2008-07-10 17:59:00
As more and more of our vegetable needs have been met with visits to the green grocers, costermongers and supermarkets more cottage garden vegetables have been lost to us all. An old and useful vegetable that would benefit everyone is skirret. Skirret is a root vegetable ... to best describe its flavour would be to imagine a cross between a parsnip and carrot. Once a skirret plant in the garden then it's there forever as they are said to be everlasting. As with carrots and parsnips they have green foliage on top but then they produce a multitude of roots or root tubas and as the roots or tubas are broken off for use then more grow in their place. Skirret can be used in stir frying, soups, stews, casseroles, baking, chipping ... in fact, it is a welcome addition or substitute to any other root vegetable and therefore can be used to vary old favourite recipes. This lovely, Elizabethan vegetable is worth a place in anyone's garden or back yard. It can be grown from purchasing a small ...

The First (and Last) Kanrei Sermon of Everlasting Peace, Harmony, and Brussel Sprouts
    2007-09-22 04:12:00
Today, my friends, we are going to talk about “perspective” and all the evils contained within. For some may blame religion for many of the world's ills, but I say “nay brother, nay!” Some may blame politics for many of the world's ills today, but I say “nay brother, nay!” No sir, nothing has created more evil; has committed more murder; has spread more sorrow I tell you than that evil, wicked, nasty, naughty demon named “perspective.” I ask you, all of you right now, what can turn a terrorist into a freedom fighter? That's right my friends, perspective! What can take the best movie and make it a pile of steaming, dripping crap? That's right my friends, perspective! What makes a good leader stand apart from a bad leader? Hell, what makes the difference between the two? That's right my friends, perspective. Perspective justifies every war that ever was. Every murder is an act of self preservation in some manner from the right perspective.I know you are scared now and you should be. Any lucid person would be, but I offer salvation in addition to problem revealing my friends. I offer a solution. The solution is simple and obvious- just accept my perspective as the right one. It clears everything up and makes life so much simpler. If you find yourself in disagreement with me, then quite simply you are wrong. Simple or what? I am a June Gemini after all. Trust me, from my perspective, this is the best solution to all the world's problems. Just leave the key under the mat. Everything will be OK from now on....

    Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis triplinervis)
    2006-10-24 12:07:00
Pearly Everlasting Anaphalis triplinervis(a-NAF-uh-lus) (trip-lee-ner-viss)This was a cute little plant that I saw at Wave Hill. It was intermingling with several other plants out in front of the Conservatory. It looked like it would be fun for the fall border. It has a strange crossover branching pattern. The foliage is a nice color gray. Since it is native to the Himalayas it is hardy to USDA Zone 3. The gardens at Wave Hill were full of a lot of great botanical surprises. It is always nice to visit there. It was really windy but I managed a few snaps in between giant gusts. Yesterday, I planted most of the large trees in my new project. Only 2 more to go but they are probably the worst, they are two huge 5 foot across Globe Blue Spruce. They really look a lot bigger now that they are next to the front door then they did at the nursery. I am sure they will draw some blood when we are planting them. After that it is all container stuff, which should be easy. I will try and post a pict...
