| | More children studying finance exams. | | 2008-04-22 07:58:00 | | Personal finance is firmly on the school curriculum with over 10,000 pupils in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland looking forward to gaining finance qualifications, that they hope will enable them to pursue careers in the financial services industry. The teenagers are studying optional GCSE, AS and A-level equivalent courses that have been designed as ‘stand-alone’ qualifications, and are delivered by the IFS School of Finance educational charity. Although approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) schools can choose whether or not to offer the additional subjects to students. [ finance ,savings ,money ]The GCSE equivalent courses were only launched a year ago and have already attracted 5,700 students. This follows on from the success of the AS and A-level equivalent courses that have attracted 4,500 pupils to enrol since 2005. I wanted to take a Belgian publication ("De Standaard", april 5, 2008, page 8) as an opportunity to point the finger at entrance exams.
A concept you meet around the globe.
Now, sometimes it is indeed a good option:
- the universities only want to put efforts in the best of the best.
- there are limited facilities, so they have to make a selection.

| | Licensure Exams for OFWs in Saudi | | 2008-01-25 10:54:00 | | Last month, the PRC under the supervision of Department of Labor and Employment conducted board examinations on different testing locations in State of Saudi Arabia. The goal is to reach out OFWs based in Saudi who are eligible to take the licensure examination so that they could be certified in accordance to Professional Regulatory Commission once they passed the exam. The last time PRC administered a board examination in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is on 2004 and there were only two exams available during that time: Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. With the licensure exam held on December 2007, PRC was able to conduct test for Mechanical Engineering, Professional Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Master Electrician, Electrical Engineering and Architecture. For OFWs in Saudi, this is the opportunity that nobody wants to miss. I admire the PRC for this reaching out activity that gave our kabayans in Saudi a chance to take the board even if they are working overseas. A month later, PRC released the result and I congratulate all the successful examinees, our new OFW Engineers - Welcome Aboard!.. | | Exams ‘07, day five | | 2007-06-21 04:21:23 | | To the person who found this site searching for “last minute chem regents review”: I am truly sorry. I have failed you.
To the person who found this site searching for “June 2007 chemistry regents answers”: I have failed you too, but I’m considerably less sorry about that.
In other news: I am feeling excessively tired right now, but I feel obligated to write in order to finish up this string of exam-related entries.
The Chemistry Regents was fabulous. Nothing difficult on electrolytic cells or esterification reactions. There was also no question on Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, which I was so sure would be on there– oh well.
Afterwards I had a long phone conversation with Jodi, in which we discussed picnics and killing turtles (which I do not advocate, just for the record). The rest of the hour before the buses came was spent thinking about thistles, broccoliflower, and cauli with Eva, and reminding Karin that &ldqu | | By: Circadian Rhythms
| | Exams ‘07, day four | | 2007-06-19 01:27:18 | | The Latin Proficiency:
Easiest. Test. EVER.
It is a common belief that you don’t really need to know Latin in order to successfully pass a state Latin exam. What is less well known is that it’s true. Too true. All you need is a capacity for reasoning and a cursory knowledge of ancient Roman culture– e.g. a mythology book and a year spent with PB. Any bits of arcane information can be happily ignored, as you can skip like 20% of the test.
Everyone was done within 45 minutes, easily. But we had to stay for the full hour anyway. Rules, rules.
I also encountered a couple teachers in the hallway and learned I did quite nicely on various final exams. Am I being a smidgen vague here, by any chance? They were the English and Math finals. Yes, they were really good grades. Yes, I’m very happy about them.
Good then. Proceeding.
The school looks so strange when it is empty, the quad and hallways peaceful, lockers gaping open, classrooms devoid of desks. I alw | | By: Circadian Rhythms
| | Exams ‘07, day three | | 2007-06-16 02:01:02 | | Thank goodness the German Regents was easy. If it had been even remotely difficult, I would have burned with the fire of a thousand suns. Yes, I am in fact beginning to hate having all these tests. By the Chemistry Regents I will be just filling in random numbers on the answer sheet, having ceased to care in the least.
But back to the German. We had our good friend Mary as our proctor (half the time, anyway), which meant unnecessary reminders that we “really want to do well on this test,” and other more, ah… useful information. Not that it was cheating at all, oh no.
I sort of went nuts on the writing section, throwing in 50% more words than required (I wanted three paragraphs…) and formulating such convoluted sentences that I started losing track of all my verbs– which is apt to happen in German. Stupid subordinating conjunctions.
Afterwards I journeyed into the lair of Jodi’s voice teacher, where a couple awkwa | | By: Circadian Rhythms

| | Exams ‘07, day two | | 2007-06-14 22:10:08 | | Today was kind of not so very cool.
What was cool (both literally and figuratively) was testing in York Lecture Hall. It was nice being in a room where the only people present were Combined students and teachers, all people you know very well, so you could crack jokes about ringing cell phones and things without worrying about proctors storming over and sternly berating you for having a sense of humor. It was a very relaxed environment.
What wasn’t cool was the test itself, which covered a lot of material we had never really gone over in class and therefore could not have been expected to study. Exempli gratia: question(s?) on Regeneration, which only a few people read, myself not included. Granted we could skip some questions, but not as many as I would’ve liked.
The essay was relatively straightforward. At least I wrote about the correct number of people, unlike for the Global Regents. Yeah. That was the other uncool thing: discov | | By: Circadian Rhythms
| | Exams ‘07, day one | | 2007-06-14 03:00:08 | | To start with, we had to find our desks.
This was no simple task, considering the substantial number of students taking Algebra/Math 12/Precalculus tests.
Steve: “Yeah, this is actually the first part of the test…”Me: “So if we fail this part–”Steve: “–The rest of it will be a lot harder.
It was, too.
Not only were there problems that I had no idea how to do, or even begin, but it was also probably the longest math test I’ve ever taken. Maybe the best part of it was when I randomly guessed an answer, then went back later and waded through the icky mathness part of it and found out I’d guessed correctly to begin with.
I should use that strategy more often. Not.
The worst part was that ugly derivative problem! And afterwards, my mom taught me a nifty trick for figuring out the derivatives of the products of functions. Curse you, Steve, for not teaching us this vital piece of information before! Alt | | By: Circadian Rhythms
