The Buffalo Bills spent the early portion of their 2008 off-season attempting to remedy a porous run defense. After finishing 25th in the league in that category in 2007 - surrendering 124.6 yards per game on the ground - the Bills tried to fix the problem by signing beefy linebacker Kawika Mitchell and trading for beefier defensive tackle Marcus Stroud.
So far, the remedy is working wonders.
Though the first-unit defense has only seen a few series' worth of action through two pre-season games, Buffalo's revamped rushing defense has done a great job thwarting two solid rushing attacks in Washington and Pittsburgh. In their pre-season opening loss to the Redskins, Clinton Portis was held to just 18 yards on 7 rushes (though he did score a touchdown against Buffalo's second unit defense). The Giants don't play again until Monday, Aug. 18 against Cleveland. That's 12 days between games Then, the Giants play on the 18th (Cleveland), Saturday the 23rd (Jets) and Thursday the 28th (New England).
That's two exhibition games in six days and three in an 11-day span.
That is insane scheduling. I know the reserves will get most of the snaps, but I don't see how the Giants can get to the season opener against the Redskins healthy after that stretch.
On top of which, that kind of screwball schedule will make having the Giants ready for the Sept. 4 opener a real challenge for coach Tom Coughlin.

| | | Toulouse-Lautrec Exhibition | | 2008-01-14 06:12:00 | | I spent a couple of hours Friday morning at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art viewing the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition that ended last weekend.Subtitled "la vie parisienne" it covered the last 10 years of his short 36 year life.On display were some 300 odd works including paintings,drawings and the posters for which he is widely known for.According to my copy of Art for Dummies Toulouse-Lautrec "was and wasnt an Impressionist and stands alone with a personalised and quirky form of realism"(pg 155).I was intrigued by the inclusion of a number of Japanese wood block prints in the show.These woodblock prints or ukiyo-e(literally "pictures of the floating world") began filtering into Europe from the 1850s and became available for purchase in some specialised stores in Paris.A number of the European painters of the time,including Toulouse-Lautrec, adopted in their own work some features of the prints.In his posters,you can see for example, his use of black silhouetted figures and black,background shapes that were commonly employed in ukiyo-e.Some of the poses and stances of figures in his posters again look reminiscent of the earlier prints.As does his use of clear outlines and the use of contrasting flat areas of colour with areas of patterns.It was interesting to walk back and forth between the Japanese prints and the posters and compare the styles.I was pleased I made the effort to see this show.Even though there were no real stand outs for me on display it was still worthwhile seeing the paintings and posters first hand.I also appreciated the opportunity to see how Japanese wood block prints influenced his work particularly in the design of his posters.... | | By: porcelain-monkey | | |

A new exhibit called “Imperial Russia - from Peter I to Nicolas II ” will open on October 25th at the D. Luis Gallery of the Palacio da Ajuda in Lisbon. This groundbreaking event will be inaugurated by the Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who will be in Portugal to attend a summit between the European Union and Russia. It will be the biggest exhibition that the Hermitage Museum ever offered outside Russia. Most Hermitage exhibitions showcase about 250 pieces.
This will be the first of three temporary exhibitions that the Portuguese Government has agreed to offer together with the Hermitage Museum from now until 2010. It will feature a variety of art masterpieces, such as decorative arts, paintings, sculptures, furniture, textiles and jewellery. “Imperial Russia - from Peter I to Nicolas II” will run until February, 2008.
