    Update on Winter Sowing Experiment

Believe it or not some of my wintersown seeds that actually bore seedlings are just getting into their permanent home in the ground.  I have some White Swan Echinacea and Japanese Irises that actually sprouted in June and survived the heat and rains.  They are going to find their home next to some hollyhocks behind [...]

    Random Stock Picking Experiment Update
    2008-06-07 00:39:00
About six months ago, I started a random stock picking experiment. I wanted to randomly select (method explained in link) 10 stocks a week, and judge their performance against those of investing newsletters I planned to review. My hypothesis was that as long as a large number of stocks was picked, the random stock portfolio would perform roughly the same as the market. And this, I thought, would be better than the majority of the investing newsletters out there. (Basically, can a monkey pick stocks better than professionals? Or, are you better off just buying an index fund?)I only did the experiment for six weeks, picking 60 random stocks. The process of picking the stocks, noting their prices, etc, was somewhat tedious, and I slacked off. However, 60 stocks is a pretty good number. My original goal was to hold each stock for a year and a day. While I don't know what I'll be doing six months from now when the first batch matures, I thought I'd update the random stocks' (all six batches

Applied Computational Materials Modeling Theory, Simulation and Experiment
    2008-05-17 13:43:23
The scope of the proposed book is to identify and emphasize the successful link between computational materials modeling as a simulation and design tool and its synergistic application to experimental research and alloy development. Compared to other areas in science where computational modeling has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of a particular field, computational materials modeling has been rather limited in its ability to insert itself as a major tool in materials design. The impression that computational modeling is simply an intellectual pursuit with no real life application has, in the long run, hindered the more widespread use of computational materials procedures by the mainstream materials community. The purpose of this book is to provide the average person working in the materials field with a more balanced perspective of the role that computational modeling can play in every day research and development efforts. This will by done by presenting a

    The Starbucks Experiment
    2008-03-03 16:46:00
I have hated Starbucks for a long time. They are symbolic of what I hate in the American food industry, a well marketed company with bad to mediocre product making the most money. I can't blame them for trying to be successful but as a true lover of food/beverages, I cringe at the thought of their coffee.Last Tues, Starbucks closed all 7100 stores across the country to re-educate their employees on how to make their drinks. I thought to myself, great, they are going to improve their product and I won't have to suffer during all the casual business meetings held at Starbucks. Today, I had some time to kill between lunch with my friend Dot and an acupuncture appointment, so I went to Starbucks to see what improvements they've made. I walked in, stood on line, bought my coffee, put my sugar and half & half in, walked out and took a sip. Nothing had changed. The experience was surely the same and the coffee was just as burnt as before. I took a few more sips and thought about it again.

The Making Money Experiment blog - In review

Since this blog was created, back in August 2007, there have been written many reviews about various websites, blogs, products and services I've considered them to be useful to you, my readers and visitors. But it've been quite a while since I haven't reviewed a blog of one of my fellow bloggers and friends. This is why today I will present you a blog called The Making Money Experiment, which belongs to Peter Leitsch, better known as Querblogger ( a very friendly and like-minded friend of mine from Germany..the country of Michael Ballack ( for those who are soccer fans :) ).Before going in to more details about his online journal, let's see how our friendship started. For sure, we first met many months ago, in 2007, via LinkReferral ( not only that this is a good traffic source, but you can also make some new friends there too ). Can't remember exactly if Peter reviewed my blog at LR or if I was the first to review his blog, but we soon become friends. And from there on, we've started

Experiment for the Sporty or Nutty
    2008-01-31 22:54:00
Weight training suits/jackets (like a lifejacket but heck heavier) are commonly used to develop muscle and put on weight. Experimenting with the complexities, I realised that they would be the PERFECT to do the reverse. Extravagant at first thought, but think again. Is it really?Love it or hate it! The maths:Build muscles = Increased weight = Increased energy burntBuild muscles + Balanced diet = Weight loss + Yah!As explained in my post on building muscle to lose weight, the heavier you are, the more energy you use. Wearing a weight suit removes the building muscle part from the equation, making it all into one step. Wear the suit and you will lose weight in theory (with a reasonably balanced diet), or at the minimum stabilize your weight. Booty bonus time: As luck would have it, any weight based exercise will build muscles, sexy rippled abs here we come.More menacing numbers:Weight training suit = Increased weight = Increased energy burntWeight suit + Balanced diet = Weightloss + Musc

    Random Stock Experiment List 2
    2008-01-27 00:20:00
Last week I started my random stock picking experiment, to see how random stock picking compares in performance to that of professionals, my hypothesis being that it will do better than the majority. Here are this week's 10 random stocks with their closing prices on 1/25/08.Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) $32.94Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd. (ENH) $38.61AZZ Inc. (AZZ) $33.25Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc. (ALSK) $12.73AMIS Holdings Inc. (AMIS) $7.71OPNET Technologies, Inc. (OPNT) $8.6Royal Gold, Inc. (RGLD) $30.23Aircastle Ltd. (AYR) $22.5Valassis Communications, Inc. (VCI) $Hercules Technology Growth Capital, Inc. (HTGC) $10.72I mentioned last week that I would use Stockalicious to track the stocks. I've decided against this, however, as half the time the widget wasn't loading. A few days ago, it prevented this blog from loading. I'll be looking for something better.

    Random Stock Picking Experiment
    2008-01-19 22:55:00
At some point in the (near) future, I will review various investing newsletters and investing gurus. For some time I've had a theory that most newsletters and gurus that have decent performance records owe them not to their investing acumen but to the number of their picks. Over time stocks as a group tend to go up. You pick enough stocks, and your performance shouldn't be bad. That is my hypothesis. In the late 1990s, there used to be something called Monkeydex. It was an index of stocks picked by a monkey, and its performance beat that of many professionals. Sadly, it appears that the index is no more. I've decided to create my own version. Its results will be one measure against which gurus and newsletters will be compared.Every weekend, I will randomly pick 10 stocks, and their performance will be monitored for a year and a day (so they would be taxed at the long term capital gains rate). I will use the picked stocks' closing price on the last trading day before they are picked (usually a Friday), and keep track of them on Yahoo! Finance's portfolio feature and on Stockalicious (look for the widget on the left hand side). My method for randomly selecting 10 stocks a week will be as follows. As I could not find a list of the stocks tracked by the Wilshire 5000 or the MSCI Broad Market Indexes (please email me or post a comment if you happen to know where a list can be found), I decided to use the holdings of Vanguard's Total Stock Market ETF (VTI). It has over 3,600 stocks at the time of writing. You can see the list here.I will take this list, and paste it at a list randomizer. It "generates mathematically random numbers based on noises recorded by a microphone in Ireland, and then returns your list in the randomized order." The top 10 will be the random stocks of the week. There will probably be a bear market in the near future, but I think it's too much work to have both buy picks and sell picks (I'm a slacker, after all). Over time, I think the random p

    2007-11-17 10:43:49
Well, in this post I'll talk about getting traffic to your site or blog, via a low cost method: ImmenseHits.com. You may think why would I waste my money on a traffic resource that it may not send me one single visitor? The answer: I thought to give ImmenseHits a try, since I've never purchased traffic for this blog, from the day I've started it. And, to be honest, not all the advertising methods that you may encounter will turn up to be a good investment for you. Now, let me talk about the website mentioned above..I found ImmenseHits via a Google AdWords ad, on HiStats website, as far as I remember. They were claiming that would send you lots of visitors, for low prices. Of course, many of this sites are just a waste of time and money and they'll never deliver you the promised visitors. And if you will see a slight change in your traffic stats, don't get excited: those may not be real visitors at all ( just crap traffic, generated by automated software or scripts. So basically, y

Video: Interesting Experiment - Richard Dawkins on the God Machine
    2007-09-19 05:58:08
Michael Persinger is a neuropsychologist at Canada's Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. His theory is that the sensation described as having a religious experience is merely a side effect of our bicameral brain's feverish activities. He has attempted to create experiments to show that when the right hemisphere of the brain is stimulated in the cerebral region presumed to control notions of self, and then the left hemisphere is called upon to make sense of this nonexistent entity, the mind generates what is felt as a 'sensed presence.' Many of Persinger's studies detail the reactions that people have when their temporal lobes are stimulated with complex magnetic fields. Some of the subjects experience a 'sensed presence' in the form of the deity from the culture that they were raised in. They see the God (or spirits associated with their God - the Virgin Mary, Mohammed, etc) that they believe in. Others have had experiences that mimic the feeling that one would have during alien/UFO visitation - these people tend to be more agnostic. In 2003 the BBC arranged for Prof. Richard Dawkins to be a subject in one of Persinger's experiments. The results are shown in the video below:

One More Experiment Before the Wife Returns
    2007-06-30 03:30:03
My God, she has been away a long time, hasn’t she?… As I mentioned in my last post about food experimentation at home, I mentioned that I wanted to try a turkey burger recipe that I had a modification for that I first read about on Avocado Green Oven. The idea was simple, make a turkey burger, top it with caramelized onions and apples mixed with reduced balsamic vinegar and topped with fresh arugula and toasted almonds. All in all, I thought I had an idea that surpassed the original recipe which called for just incorporating the caramelized onions and apples (no balsamic) into the burgers themselves, and then topping them like regular burgers. Don’t laugh, the bread tasted fine. Well, I gave it a shot, and to my dismay, I discovered only after the burgers were on the grill that I did not have any hamburger buns. So I had to put them on some nice whole wheat bread instead. So yeah, they may look a but odd, but I can still judge the result of my experiment. Ag

Make Money with Pageflakes - An Experiment.
    2007-06-22 09:58:00
I’m sure some of you would have heard of PageFlakes, an personalized start page that you can set to show up whenever you turn on your computer and open your internet browser. This page is customizable and you can use it to display your address book, to-do list, blog or news feeds, calendar and many other widget-like applications. Why should you use a personalized start page?Because you’ll get to squeeze all the important information you need on one page, allowing you easy access once you open your browser. If you’re a blog reader, you can use it to display feeds from blogs that you usually read. You can also use it as a web-based for jotting down short lists, ideas, events or to-do tasks.Like other start pages like Netvibes, Pageflakes is heavy on Ajax, which means that you can drag and drop most elements on the page itself. It’s very user friendly and you can easily integrate a lot of feed-based media onto your startpage. For example you can get feeds from Youtube or Flickr for

A Community Feed Tracking Experiment: Do you Want Me to Read Your Blog?
    2007-06-14 10:32:51
Copyright © Dosh Dosh (http://www.doshdosh.com) I’ve been terribly busy lately with several online projects and haven’t had the time to follow the blog feeds I have in my Google feed reader. There’s around 100+ feeds, each with dozens of posts patiently waiting to be read. It almost feels like a chore. I’ll probably spend some time in the next few days going through each feed and picking out the interesting articles for further reading/linking. While this is a solution for now, I’m thinking of a better way to monitor my feeds in the long run. Megite might be a solution. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Megite’s interface and have recommended them as a content aggregator to help you create blog content. I’m thinking of taking things one step further by exporting all the feeds I monitor into Megite and thereby creating my own personalized content tracker. Want to Join Dosh Dosh on Megite? I’m quite sure that I’ve missed

The Technorati Favorites Experiment: A Final Traffic Report and Analysis
    2007-05-19 00:54:57
Copyright © Dosh Dosh (www.doshdosh.com) I started Dosh Dosh’s Technorati Favorites experiment on the 9th of April to measure the value of the Technorati Top 100 Most Favorited list in terms of traffic. The experiment is now over a month old and I’ve finally decided it was the right time to draft up a statistical report on the nature and amount of visitor traffic from Technorati. This detailed report was compiled using the Google Analytics stats package and its verity is demonstrated through screenshots of the specific Technorati referral traffic channels. I have not read any other detailed statistical reports on Technorati Most Favorited list and I do think that this presents important information which allows you to determine if it is worth your time to actively encourage favoriting from your readers or other sources. Setting a Timeframe for the Traffic Report Dosh Dosh broke into the Technorati Top 100 Most Favorited on the 10th of April, one day after initiating th

DIY Security system experiment You have seen in the movie that some security system uses laser as the trigger/sensor. You actually can built a simple version of that by using the cheapest material you can get in the market. Apparatus or material you need 1. Light sensitive light/chime/music box 2. Laser pointer 3. Mirrors First thing that you need to so is to install the light sensitive light or some call it "cat eyes". Then to protect it from the high intensity laser you can paste a thin film on the sensor. The more opaque the film the brighter place it can be installed to. But not too opaque because it will not function well. Set the light sensitive light/etc to switch on when the laser is pointed at the sensor and off then the laser is not pointed at it. Secondly is to install the laser pointer. Anywhere you install you need to direct the ray of the laser to the sensor or the light sensitive light/etc. Then you are done. Try to block the ray of the laser. If the light sensiti

    2007-05-09 02:06:00
I originally submitted my site to Blogcatalog when I first started blogging but did not revisit, as it seemed only a run of the mill submission and search site. With recent 'social networking' changes and a makeover it has become, for me, a contender with MyBlogLog - with regard to the amount of traffic from the site and the number of contacts that have added me. This is early days too, with membership levels on the rise; many people not yet knowing about the changes.iwebis has a explanation of the new features as well as running an experiment to increase awareness of BlogCatalog. It is asking members to post a "BlogCatalog Community Mass Buzz" post 0n Monday May 14th . Post about what you like about BlogCatalog and link to your blog detail or profile page. Dealing with Some Criticisms on the Technorati Favorites Exchange Experiment
    2007-04-30 11:55:44
Copyright © Dosh Dosh (www.doshdosh.com) There has recently been some criticism about the Technorati Favorites exchanges that have been taking place around the web. Amit Agarwal from Digital Inspiration has a particularly curt analysis which suggests that reciprocal favoriting harms the credibility or legitimacy of the Technorati Top 100 and reduces its value for Technorati users. Darren Rowse from Problogger has followed up Amit’s post with a more detailed argument that addresses similar issues. I disagree with the statements made by both parties for several reasons and I think that it is necessary to continue this discussion on Dosh Dosh, because after all, this is the origin and source for all the recent Technorati Favorites exchanges. Debating about this topic is highly important because we are all Technorati users and therefore share the same social space. Offering useful input and feedback is one of best ways to improve Technorati’s user functionality and feature s

    Result of My Evil Experiment
    2007-04-27 22:53:18
Last time, I come up with a evil scheme to direct Komiku's reader to my blog. The result is not impressive. I got about 10 new vistors who is searching for "Technorati top". They all click the Technorati favorite's button. I guess they thought I make it to the top 5,000 in Technorati. I try to be the next John Chow, but end up becoming Dr. Evil -- the guy who has all the evil ideas but not able to finish it. I learn this trick from King Gary's blog. On last Wedensday when Sanjaya got voted out, Gary was the first blogger in the entire blogosphere who blog about it. For a brief moment, Gary's post is on top of Google Blog Search for "American Idol Sanjaya". This brought his blog flood of traffic and also got dugged. Gary is working at b5media. The company who is co-found by Darren Rowse.

An Update on the “Chinese Yuan Carry Trade Basket Experiment”
    2007-04-08 02:29:30
The success of this basket so far is exceeding my initial expectations. I have uploaded a spreadsheet of the account transactions, including interest payments, available for download if you wish to inspect the results. While the overall sentiment over the past few weeks (since March 20, 2007) has been bearish the dollar, I still feel that this basket can still continue similar returns in any currency environment. I am a bit disappointed with Oanda for increasing the interest rate at which an investor can borrow at in Chinese Yuan (Previously it was -1%; now it has increased to .5% for a total increase of 1.5%), but we can make due with what we have. I remember a few weeks ago I was lucky to get 7 sign-ups in a week. I know everyone is really excited about the release of the Viewbar and they want to get all of the sign-ups they can before. (Umm… OK you found me out, I don’t know but I’m guessing…) But you should remember that for a lot of people it will be easier to get sign-ups after the Viewbar is released. So don’t don’t worry if you are having trouble getting people to sign-up right now. Just keep plugging away and you will get there. The biggest thing you have to remember is that the more you put in the more you get out. AglocoNews.com Still #5 on Google, which I’m psyched about. All of the other searc

The Chinese Yuan Carry Trade Basket Experiment
    2007-03-24 07:35:07
After writing about the viability of a carry trade involving the Chinese Yuan, I got to thinking about how I could develop a basket of currencies to create a diversified carry basket involving a number of major and exotic currency pairs. This basket would seek to profit from the low volatility of the Chinese Yuan and from the large interest rate spread received for holding the USD/CNY. In my previous post in regard to using the Chinese Yuan as a short, I illustrated the interest rate spreads with ten different currencies; I have taken those ten currencies and equally invested them against the Chinese Yuan. The basket is currently set up to make approximately 38.05% in interest a year, at the current interest rates. At first glance the strategy may appear to be risky, but this basket is only leveraged at 5 times the balance. The asset allocations for the basket are below with unit values and approximate USD values. As you can see from the $100,000 basket, I am short $500,000 worth
