2007 A RECORD YEAR FOR ITALIAN WINE EXPORTS
    2008-03-02 16:32:00
2007 will be remembered as a record-breaking year for Italian wine on the U.S. market. A total 2.3 million hectoliters were exported for a total worth of 1.13 billion dollars, and a large jump ahead of the main competitors, France and Australia. In 2007, Italy exported double the quantity of its French rivals and 400,000 hectoliters more than Australia.“The most interesting aspect” – declared Jacopo Biondi Santi, Chairman of the Italian Wine & Food Institute – “is that Italy closed out 2007 with an increase of 9% in quantity and value, while Australia registered a decrease in quantity of 3.5% and only a slight increase in value of 3.2%. An even more significant fact, if it is taken into consideration that Italy had more difficulties to confront than Australia, above all, because of the strength of the euro over the dollar, which has reduced the competitiveness of Italian producers”.

India to slap steep duty on iron ore exports to China
    2008-02-23 21:08:00
The Indian steel ministry has decided to push for imposing a steep duty on iron ore exports. This view has been formed after a ministerial delegation led by steel secretary J S Sarma held wide ranging meetings with officials in the government and the steel industry in Beijing until Friday. India imposed a small duty of Rs 300 a tonne of iron ore last year. But it was forced to partially roll back the duty after Chinese buyers raised a hue and cry over it. China buys 85 per cent of India's exports of iron ore. The ministry's move, if successful, is bound to result in howls of protests from the Chinese steel industry. But the steel ministry is convinced it would be able to get away with the new duty because the Chinese industry needs Indian iron ore. The duty is necessary to discourage exports and preserve India's natural resources to the extent possible, it has argued. "Most countries in the world preserve their natural resources and meet their requirement through imports.

MEXICO: The President Felipe Calderon sees oil exports falling further
    2007-06-30 19:04:00
President Felipe Calderon said on Friday he expected Mexico's crude oil exports to slip further this year and next, underscoring the need for a fiscal reform to make the country less dependent on oil revenues. "Starting in 2006, the volume of our oil exports has been falling at an alarming rate and from what we have observed up until now, this year and the next will be no exception," Calderon told a banking event. Mexico's oil exports slipped 1.3 percent in 2006 to an average of 1.793 million barrels per day (bpd) as state oil monopoly Pemex grappled with lower output at its huge but aging Cantarell oil field. Oil exports have slid a further 4.4 percent from the 2006 average in the first five months of 2007 to average 1.714 million bpd. The declining volumes coincide with lower oil prices after the historic peaks of the last few years. Pemex has a target to keep oil exports at at least 1.648 million bpd this year, a Pemex spokeswoman said. Calderon is battling to get a key fiscal ref

RUSSIA: Oil Duties Go Up, Companies Prepare to Cut Exports
    2007-06-16 00:29:00
The oil export duty goes up from $156.4 to $200.6 per 1 metric ton on June 1, customs authorities reminded Thursday. Oil companies still find way to cope with changing duties, increasing exports ahead of the hike and planning a drop in sales abroad in summer. Oil export duties are reviewed in Russia every other month, benchmarked to world oil prices. Following spring trading, the government decided to raise rates for exporting crude from $156.4 to $200.6 for 1 metric ton. Russia sold 22 million metric tons of oil abroad in March. Higher export duties can bring an extra $970 million a month to state coffers, the government hopes. Meanwhile, customs officials reminded that there is no way to declare exports under previous duties. Earlier, exporters were able to declare oil beforehand paying old duties for the next month delivery, a loophole in the Tax Code that authorities stove to plug. The Supreme Court of Arbitration has recently a decision to ban this procedure. In search for othe
