    Articles about Faith
Endicott Peabody, Wyatt Earp & Faith

LESSONS IN FAITH & FORGIVENESSThere are some fascinating forums online dealing with the Wild West.  I think the best one is moderated by a friend, James Wright.  Earlier today James emailed that there was a heated discussion about one of my books, A Church for Helldorado, Endicott Peabody's 1882 Earp Era Tombstone Diary.  I am including my entire rebuttal, and additional comments.I learned something today.  I don't think we truly know how to forgive until we have experienced Christian forgiveness.  Forgiveness is a very important thing.  In the Lord's Prayer, we are taught, "Forgive us our ...

Faith-Based Currency, by US Rep. Ron Paul
    2008-07-21 12:13:00
The Latin term “fiat” roughly translates to “there shall be”. When we refer to fiat money, we are referring to money that exists because the government declares it into existence. It is not based on production or earnings, and not backed by any commodity. It is solely based on trusting the government. Fiat money is exchanged in the economy as long as there is faith in the government that issues it. Some are blaming the recent shakeup in the markets to “whining” or financial fear-mongering, which misses the whole point. History has shown that fiat money, or “faith-based currency” always fails, because when governments claim this power, they always behave irresponsibly. read more

    The Audicity of Faith
    2008-07-19 20:16:09
SATURDAY, JULY 19Today was the annual church bazaar.  For those of you following the sordid tale of my "raffle" traumas, we didn't do bad.  We sold nearly $1400 in raffle tickets.  The best part is my friend Raymona won the Grand Prize of over $1800 in jewelry and local gift certificates.  I have one friend, who, when last seen, was chasing her down the road trying to mug her for the spa certificates. The best part of the day was watching the fruits of one mother's Audacity of Faith.  The woman, who died several years ago, and my mother, ...

    Trust, Faith, ‘Your Walk”
    2008-07-19 00:36:59
FRIDAY, JULY 18I think many of us who are Christians give very good lip service about “faith” and our “walk” with Christ.  For nearly 8 years I have been writing a book about “praise”.  It is not finished probably because I have a heck of a lot to learn.  I live by the philosophy:  Rejoice Always, Pray Without Ceasing, and in Everything Give Thanks (for this the world of Christ).  Perhaps it would be better to say I try to live by it.  This week things have happened that have challenged me, my praise, and my basic Christian ...

    Blair launches his faith foundation
    2008-05-30 19:08:22
Tony Blair, now a Roman Catholic, is still, to my mind, a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character. That may sound terribly uncharitable and even downright unChristian, but I do think he has a few "issues" to confront. As an Anglican, apparently of the High Church tendency, he never really gave much support to Catholic issues. His ambivalence on homosexuality, abortion, and general moral matters seemed paramount in the New Labour pantheon. His wife, Cherie, and his children are all Roman Catholics. However, Blair thought it inappropriate to convert to Rome whilst Prime Minister. I cannot think why. Maybe he was under excruciating pressure from the secularists in the party, who are a bedevilment of control freakery. Maybe he felt the British public would rise up against him with Cromwellian fervour, seeking his head on a plate. I may find his politics unsavoury, but I do think Blair has his moral compass in the right direction. He's just a bit hazy with the pointing skills. His new organisatio

    Book Review - Bad Faith
    2008-05-29 10:40:00
Bad Faith chronicles the life and times of Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, one of the most vile, base, and idiotic Nazi collaborators in Vichy, France. While Carmen Callil's connection to Darquier (who added "de Pellepoix" himself to make his name sound more regal) via his daughter should make the book more interesting, it instead smacks of a very long personal quest with little outside interest.Callil, the Australian author and founder of Virago Press, began to see a psychiatrist in 1960 after a failed suicide attempt. She was referred to Dr. Anne Darquier in part because Dr. Darquier was part Australian, although born and raised in London. After a decade of three times a week sessions, Callil went to her appointment one day and the doctor was not in. Anne Darquier de Pellepoix (Calill saw her full name on her funeral program) had indeed committed suicide herself.Needless to say, when Callil saw this name while watching a television documentary about Vichy, France (Marcel Ophuls' The

Good Deeds Won’t Save Us – Only Faith in Jesus Will
    2008-05-23 14:16:00
Most of you reading this article already know that good deeds will not help you into heaven. I could help all of my neighbors financially, and I could feed and clothe all of the hungry and poor in the world, but that is not what God wants from me. What does God want from me? God wants me to have faith in Him! And the funny thing about that is, faith is a gift from God. God wants us to “believe” with all of our being that Jesus is who He says He is, and then God will bless us with faith. It’s not that God does not want us to do good deeds and help our neighbors, friends, brothers and sisters in the Lord, but that is a given of being a Christian. On the contrary, it is our Christian responsibility to always do what is right. But first, to be responsible stewards, we must believe in and love God with all of our heart, mind, and soul. Did you know that as a believer you have a duty to “go” and preach to all nations about the awesome power of Jesus? There are many different ways a

Faith, el perro que camina en dos patas

The end of god-6: The biggest menace of religion: faith
    2008-05-07 09:06:56
By Mano Singham The most basic problem with almost any religion is the fact that they raise 'faith', which is the irrational acceptance of things in the absence of, or even counter to, credible evidence and reason, to the level of a virtue. This is simply asking for trouble. read more

Finding God In The Movies: 33 Films Of Reel Faith
    2008-04-14 09:24:51
The book 'Finding God in the Movies: 33 Films Of Reel Faith', published in August 2004, was a tremendous resource for those seeking light inside the cinema. The authors of this book are Catherine M. Barsotti and Robert K. Johnston, both of whom are Evangelical Protestant Christians. More than just a guide to great films, this book is a window into how to engage them; and find on the other side, a deeper understanding of the Lord. This is not by any means a definitive guide or a parental-guidance for the religious or spiritual community. It was meant to provoke discussion on the depth, meaning or interpretation of 33 movies which were supposed to combine the love of God and the love of reel. It will be pointless to question why your favorite movies were not listed or why on earth some were. I guess the selections were made randomly as I don't expect both Catherine and Robert to have watched more movies than Roger Ebert, the famous movie critic. So, which is your favorite movie in this lis

Hopefully it doesn't take Giradi long to realize that this guy cannot pitch more than one inning. Then there's this from Joel Sherman's blog today: Joba Chamberlain The other day I was in Joe Girardi’s

    Story #58: "Overcoming Faith"
    2008-02-13 16:01:00
(Via Caleb T.)I was raised by hyper religious parents, and I went to a private Christian school for the first decade of my education. Quite literally everyone I spoke to, every friend I had, and every adult-figure in my life was a fundamentalist Christian. The thought of atheism was to my young mind silly, though I felt sorry for all the people for their future stint in hell.At the age of seventeen, I began to question things. I am bisexual, and it was at that age that I began to realize this fact about myself. For the first time I picked up a Bible and read it completely - from Genesis to Revelations, and for the first time I began to realize how barbaric and silly most of it was. It was at this point I became a deist. (I did not as of yet have the courage to reject God completely.)I quickly graduated to an agnostic, and then more slowly developed into the militant atheist I am today. I still find myself mumbling prayers to myself, and I still have a bit of a fear of hellfire. These t

Presuppositions, Faith, and Reason: Which One is Out of Place Here?
    2008-01-29 08:59:16
Atheists and others who buck the established religious systems have suffered from a bit of a PR problem since the beginning of recorded history. There are countless stories of the heretics, the blasphemers, and the impious being imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Atheism wasn't even a prerequisite; Socrates was sentenced to death for only believing in one of the gods in the Greek Pantheon. The official charge: impiety. Why is it that this stigma has taken root so firmly within the minds of human beings? Why has this trend persisted for millennia? The answer is faith. Faith is the cause of this discrimination against the religiously atypical. The situation is as true today as it ever was, although in most civilized lands the punishment is much less severe. Perhaps one will only be ostracized by their family, classmates, or colleagues after revealing their lack of religious affiliation. The Islamic countries appear to be the main protagonists of violence in the name of religion thes

Catholic Carnival 154: Our Culture: Faith, Media, Politics
    2008-01-08 07:12:24
This week's Catholic Carnival seems to be all about the pieces of our lives that make up our national culture. It seems appropriate to discuss our culture at the start of a new year - we even have posts challenging us to improve it (through learning and teaching our Faith). So without further adieu, here's the Catholic Carnival: Faith: that sustains us and our culture. As a first time religious ed teacher (I have first graders), I can attest to the truth of Catholic Matriarch in My Domestic Church's submission. But it's more than that! She offers A Catechetical Challenge for 2008. Are you up to the task? Father V at Adam's Ale throws a little humor, a lot of truth, and some thoughtful opinion in a post on eulogizing called Not Such A Dead Topic. Think a eulogy should be done at Mass? Read this post first . . . My Domestic Church gives us a little More on Saint Columba. It all starts with an email - and I would be surprised if you don't learn something new. And with more to learn, CatholicLand! gets us started learning in O Holy Name. It offers ways to venerate the Holy Name during January (and anytime). And now for something completely different. Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering offers us a unique look at life in Lambing Season. I can't say I've seen a lamb born (city boy and all that), but I do appreciate the little lesson on God. Not to be outdone, Cause of Our Joy tells us that Pope Benedict and I are cat people. Unfortunately, her cat died last week, but this is a great eulogy (don't worry, Father V, it isn't in a Mass) of her favored pet. Another great story comes from The World . . . IMHO with Wisconsin Bishop Breaks from Conference and Opposes Emergency Contraception in Catholic Hospitals. It's great to see a Bishop stand up for life no matter the situation, in my humble opinion. Go read the whole story - and don't miss the "update." It is a new year and Simple Gifts offers us New Year's Resolution: Elimination Diet. It's not

    On Faith and Politics
    2007-12-26 01:11:00
Politics has generally been put on hold for Christmas, although some people in the early caucus and primary states might not think so, as they are bombarded with flyers, pamphlets, and phone calls from the various campaigns on an almost daily basis. The Christmas holiday has served three purposes this year as it relates to the politics. First of all, it provides campaigns, candidates, and voters alike a brief respite from the daily stump speeches, meet-and-greets, interviews, and crowded school gymnasiums. Secondly, it has given pundits and the media a chance to dissect the candidates' Christmas ads, how authentic they are, and how well they connect with voters. And finally, it serves as the impetus of this particular writing: the role of religion in the presidential campaign.Christmas is obviously a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and is probably the single most important holiday of the year for Christians around the world. However, these candidates' Christmas ads do not exist in a vacuum. Rather, they form the latest chapter in a disturbing series of overtures that blur the line between being open about one's faith and overtly trying to appear more religious than one's rivals. And that is very dangerous.Perhaps the United States has been on this course for years, given the ascendancy of the religious right, composed primarily of conservative evangelical Christians. There have been several high profile cases and news events that have been of the utmost importance to these evangelical voters: assisted suicide, Terri Schiavo, gay marriage bans, and getting closer to overturning Roe vs. Wade due to John Roberts' and Samuel Alito's confirmation to the Supreme Court. The threat from radical Islamic terrorists has also heightened the sense among many people that a religious war between Islam and Christianity is imminent or already upon us. The media have addressed religion in extended documentaries this year, as was done by CNN with its highly ac

Reinventing Yourself, Changing Your Destiny – Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith book review
    2007-12-22 12:28:56
When we claim a moment to be magical, we feel as if that moment transcends our normal experiences, our ingrained rules, and our cultural outcomes. Magic raises us out of skepticism slowly but if it is good enough, we become fervent believers.Magic realism is a literary term describing how a story is told. The stories are grounded in reality but some characters have "supernatural" or larger-than-life abilities. With magical realism, women can take flight with dewy, velvet wings, fleeing a life that only had one outcome by trying to escape her iron-clad destiny.Authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez (author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera - which was just released as a movie) and Isabel Allende (author of The House of Spirits) and Gina B. Nahai (author of Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith) are some authors who write magical realism. Gina Nahai's character, Roxanna the Angel, took flight from a generational destiny and from Tehran where a woman's ability to escape her fate is so difficult that she must don silky white wings and leap from a balcony with all the faith that she will land softly in a new place."Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith" is a powerful, compelling, and fascinating novel depicting several women's lives, women who refuse to meekly accept the lot they were assigned in life and women who forged a new life for themselves. These women didn't create their new lives without sacrifice, humiliation, pain, loss, or mistakes, yet they succeeded in reinventing themselves and elevating their human experience beyond the level of survival.Mercedes the Movie Star used her extreme beauty to control the men who thought they controlled women. Fräulein Claude completely overhauled herself by denying her national heritage and insisting that she was of German noble descent. Alexandra the Cat also claimed a noble birth and presumed all the dignity that comes with such a claim. Roxanna the Angel literally flew away from her destiny until s

    My Faith Journey Part 2
    2007-12-22 02:06:31
    2. What impact has your family had on your beliefs? Do they support your search?Only my father is Catholic, and it is thanks to him that I and my siblings have been baptised and sent to Catholic schools. While my mother is technically Anglican, a structured religion for her children is only as important to her as it is because of how important it is to my father. I have been encouraged to embrace my religion, but it doesn’t occupy a huge place in my family’s life. Religion seems to be something we forget about for a while, until suddenly Easter or Christmas comes around and Dad remembers that we should probably go to Church more often. I seldom discuss my beliefs with my parents, or they with me. It was always assumed that Dad followed Catholicism inwardly as well as outwardly and that Mum wanted us to do the same, but I had no idea what she believed herself until I asked her very recently. When I was about twelve or thirteen my father asked me whether I believed in God. It had been relevant to the conversation – we weren’t deliberately discussing spiritual matters. That was the first time I verbally expressed my thoughts that there could be a God, but I wasn’t sure. Before then I’d just accepted God as a fact, and was surprised to meet people who didn’t share the beliefs I’d been taught. I told Dad that I didn’t know why our beliefs should be definitely true, like I’ve always been told they are, when someone following a different religion could believe different things and be equally secure in the knowledge that they are right. He told me that was fair enough.Mind you, every time my being agnostic has come up since then he has threatened to send me to a public school, so he’s not entirely accepting. The one concession made has been that I was told (when I was young enough for them to think I would forget) that when I turned sixteen I could elect whether or not I went to church. I held them to it and decided that I would only go on Christmas Eve

    My Faith Journey Part 1
    2007-12-14 00:45:44
Faith can go jump in a hole and die. Sick of it. But here's Part One of what I submitted to my Religion teacher. She better like it, it took me two months to write. Or get around to writing, anyway. It's surprising how difficult it was. Enough beating around the bush. Here it is.1. Do you believe in God?I believe that there is a possibility that there is a God. I know as a Catholic I am supposed to believe in God as a certainty. I know I'm supposed to use my unwavering faith to dispel any doubts regarding the existence of God. I know I'm not supposed to be cynical, I'm just supposed to believe. I also know that I'm not satisfied with that. I've been brought up to think that my religion is to be one of the most important elements of my life. Knowing that, I'm not prepared to just accept the one religion I was born into, without looking thoroughly at why I'm supposed to believe these things, why my father's religion is any better than the Muslim's down the road and why I need a religion so badly in the first place.I believe that since I live in a world where so many people follow such different religions or spiritual paths I couldn't possibly place all of my faith in just one. Not when the only reason I can discern for following Catholicism is that it's the religion my parents want me to follow. I don't believe I could truly respect other people's beliefs unless I accept that they have just a great a possibility of being true or valid as the beliefs that I was born into. For that reason, I cannot place all my faith in God the way I am supposed to as a Catholic. To me, putting so much trust in something so uncertain feels like I'm bowing blindly to what's expected of me, rather than using my own mind and realising that there is a strong chance that there is no God, just the same as there is a chance that there is a God and the Catholics were following the right system of beliefs all along, or perhaps there's an Allah, or maybe Jesus really was a proph

    faith not fear
    2007-12-08 11:23:51
Today the Lord is replacing fear with faith. He is removing the places that are consumed by fear and replacing them by faith and trust in Him to complete the good work in usDeuteronomy 33:26-29"There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!' 28 So Israel will live in safety alone; Jacob's spring is secure in a land of grain and new wine, where the heavens drop dew. 29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD ? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will trample down their high places."---------------------------------------------------------------------

These days, it’s even less cumbersome with the advent of online dictionaries and the added benefit of providing multiple sources from which one can gain a better understanding of a particular word. In order to correct the compilation of fallacies presented in this piece, we need to start at the beginning—definitions. READ MORE » Bookmark/Search this post with: | | | | | | |

    2007-10-17 09:29:24
Whatever is done without faith - whether it is ritual, charity, austerity, or any other act - is useless. It has no value here or hereafter, O Arjuna. (The Gita, 17.28)..If you are unable even to do any spiritual discipline, then dedicate all your work to Me, or do your duty just for Me. You shall attain perfection by doing your prescribed duty for Me - without any selfish motive - just as an instrument to serve and please Me. (12.10).:: previous posts on Gita. Obama on Faith and Energy
    2007-10-09 07:43:00
Today Barack Obama addressed a "multiracial evangelical congregation in traditionally conservative Greenville, South Carolina" (which is a really nice place) and stated "I think it's important, particularly for those of us in the Democratic Party, to not cede values and faith to any one party,"from CNN:Obama: GOP doesn't own faith issue"I think that what you're seeing is a breaking down of the sharp divisions that existed maybe during the '90s," said Obama. "At least in politics, the perception was that the Democrats were fearful of talking about faith, and on the other hand you had the Republicans who had a particular brand of faith that oftentimes seemed intolerant or pushed people away." Obama said he was pleased that leaders in the evangelical community such as T.D. Jakes and Rick Warren were beginning to discuss social justice issues like AIDS and poverty in ways evangelicals were not doing before. "I think that's a healthy thing, that we're not putting people in boxes, that everybody is out there trying to figure out how do we live right and how do we create a stronger America," Obama said. He finished his brief remarks by saying, "We're going to keep on praising together. I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth."If Obama keeps talking like this (and walks the walk) he may be able to shore up some of the the gap between himself and Mrs. Clinton. Obama has Clinton beat when it comes to seeming genuine. Any large scale attempt by Hillary to bring faith into the picture risks seeming calculated and may ultimately backfire against her.Additionally the details of Obama's energy plan were distributed today to the news wires in preparation for an upcoming speech. From the AP:Obama proposes deep greenhouse gas cuts"Our energy problem has become an energy crisis because no matter how well-intentioned the promise, no matter how bold the proposal, they all fall victim to the same Washington politics that has only become more divided and dishonest; more timid and calculating; more beholden to the powerful interests that have the biggest stake in the status quo," Obama said. There are some in this race who actually make the argument that the more time you spend immersed in the broken politics of Washington, the more likely you are to change it," he said. "I find this a little amusing."Without naming Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton or other rivals, Obama said those with long Washington experience have failed to act on issues such as higher fuel economy standards for cars and trucks."When they had the chance to stand up and require automakers to raise their fuel standards, they refused. When they had multiple chances to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by investing in renewable fuels that we can literally grow right here in America, they said no," he said.He proposed a modified "cap and trade" approach to reducing emissions that would require businesses to buy allowances to pollute, creating an incentive to reduce energy usage.Under a traditional cap and trade system, power plants or businesses that exceed pollution caps must buy or trade for additional capacity, generally from plants that have taken steps to reduce their emissions. Unlike some of his rivals, Obama said he would auction all allowances rather than grandfathering some to big emitters such as oil and coal companies.Obama proposed using $150 billion from the sale of allowances to stimulate climate-friendly energy and economic development. Included would be developing the next generation of biofuels and fuel delivery infrastructure, accelerating commercial production of plug-in hybrid vehicles, promoting larger-scale renewable energy projects and low-emission coal plants, and making the electricity grid digital. He also called for making government, businesses and homes 50 percent more energy efficient by 2030, with all federal government buildings carbon neutral by 2025. Incandescent light bulbs would be phased out by 2014, a measure Obama estimates would save consumers $6 billion a year on their electric bills. Not bad but Obama and Dems in general need to start painting reducing greenhouse emissions in the terms of fighting terrorism first and fighting global warming second in order to appeal to more swing voters and energize the public. Terrorism is a far less nebulous threat than climate instability after all. Now all Obama has left to do is gather enough swing voters, independents, and moderates to gain 19 points in the polls. That is no mean feat but maybe if his message is different enough from Clinton's and he borrows a few pages from the Ron Paul / Howard Dean play book he canat least split the difference. I'm still counting on him taking a VP slot late in the primaries.h/t to Gristmill and Memeorandum

The Religious Faith of the Candidates
    2007-10-08 02:28:25
It seems many voters apply a religious test to our Presidential candidates. This has been going on for a long time now and I can't help but wonder, what has it brought us? Our national debt has soared, crime and poverty haven't gotten any better, and those who aren't at the top are struggling even harder to survive. One thing it has brought is another tool for helping the politician get elected. I'm sure most of the candidates are sincere about their faith, but I'd be willing to bet there is a small percentage who are faking it. In all the discussion about a candidate's faith there is little or no talk about where they stand on religious freedom. This should be the most important area of concern. Should a candidate's faith really matter as long he or she believes strongly in defending religious freedom. I would rather have a candidate with no faith who truly believes in religious freedom than a candidate with faith who believes everyone should follow his or her religion. I understand that this issue is important for many people, but I feel it is more important that we elect someone who will get America moving in the right direction.

Tensions started to rise last month, when the government drastically raised fuel prices in the impoverished country. Persecution of Buddhists in Myanmar and Tibet have consistently garnered media attention and cries for justice from activist groups in the United States.
