| Northcote history and the River Falcon brook | | 2008-06-17 03:32:22 | | With the modern comes Companion's forte.. and that is the history. Of course, the book wouldn't be the same without some Northcote Road action and the following is a quick potted history of the Market and the underground stream running below it.The long-established market has recently seen local retailers priced out as rents have escalated. An action group has been set up to rightfully keep independent and local trade on Northcote Road. Shopkeepers' anger has long since lingered in the borough and stretches back to the 1890s. During this time there were costermongers in Falcon Road, Northcote Road, St John's Road sand Lavender Hill, much to the annoyance of other shopkeepers. The Ratepayers' and Tradesmen's Association lobbied for their removal on number of occasions and in 1910 the costers were evicted from St John's Road. It meant Northcote became established as the primary local street market in the area. The Falcon Brook's source was in Tooting and ran north-west to the Junction via | | By: The Wandsworth Companion | | |
| | First Drive: 2008 Ford FPV Falcon | | 2008-06-12 10:29:00 | | The United States and Australia have plenty in common. Both use an offbeat version of the Queen's English. Both are loosely agreeable to an open form of democracy. Both wonder about Paris Hilton. And both, despite recent assaults on bank accounts on either side of the Pacific by galloping gas prices, still worship the effortless performance and glorious aural delights available from big-capacity muscle machines.Ford Performance Vehicles, owned by Britain's Prodrive, is the Blue Oval equivalent to GM's down-under hot-shop, Holden Special Vehicles. While HSV produces Commodore-based Holden muscle (and some of the good bits behind the forthcoming Pontiac G8 GXP), FPV works its magic on the Aussie-developed Falcons. Such is the rivalry between Ford and GM in Australia that FPV has wasted no time getting its high-performance versions of the brand-new FG Falcon on the road. There are seven new FPV models for Blue Oval enthusiasts to choose from -- four sedans and three utes. | | Ford Falcon F6, Fastest Car of Australia? | | 2008-05-22 11:55:00 | | The new FG Falcon-based range of Ford Performance Vehicles includes an even more powerful turbocharged six-cylinder F6 model that is set to break the acceleration record for a locally built car.The FPV F6 launches on June 1, 2008 as part of FPV's new FG Falcon-based range and is expected to accelerate faster than the just-introduced HSV 6.2-litre V8 Commodores. FPV, as well as part owner Ford Australia, have a policy of not providing performance figure claims for their cars, but an FPV source told Drive.com.au that the higher-powered version of Ford's XR6 Turbo is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in the high-four-second bracket. Our insider says he would be surprised if independent performance testing by motoring media didn't see the F6 at least match the 4.8 seconds BMW claims for the V8-powered BMW M3. That would pip HSV's claim of 4.96sec for its updated, 6.2-litre V8 range. The battle for Australia's fastest production car will intensify later this year when HSV launches its 7.0-l | | By: Autos Space | | |

| | The Maltese Falcon | | 2007-07-23 04:21:41 | | If you follow the high-end, high-tech sailing world, then you have probably already ran across the Maltese Falcon, but if not, you might want to check it out. It's a real-world implementation of the DynaRig. The DYNARIG owes its origin to work done in the sixties by Mr W. Prolls, at the time he believed the system could provide additional propulsion for ships. The DynaRig is effectively a square rig, the mast is freestanding and the yards are connected rigidly to the mast, in this case each mast supports six yards.
I'm no expert on sails and sail plans, but advances in this age-old area of study seem to continue despite mankind using sails for thousands of years. Another example of us not knowing everything about the sea.
Its also true that sometimes materials science advances let us build designs that were impractical in times past. Any of these advances is worth keeping an eye on, in my opinion. Even though I'm building a power craft, advances often move across the "divide&q | | By: Craft A Craft
| | 2008 Ford Falcon Ute and XR6 Turbo Sprung! | | 2007-06-21 10:02:00 | | Unlike Holden, Ford seems to be preparing their Falcon Utility to coincide with the release of their new model - codename Orion. Our spy photographer has sprung the Falcon Ute during testing in an undisclosed location in Victoria’s bushy countryside. Although the photos aren’t quite crystal clear, there is an obvious indication that body size will remain similar to Ford’s currently successful utility range. The model photographed seems to be a base model with tray attached. It’s also nice to see the Ute decked out with a big set of alloy wheels which - I would think - probably won’t be seen on the ready model.Whilst waiting for the Ford Falcon Ute to come past, our sleuth photographer snapped off a few shots of a car we have seen before. This time around, the car was much closer, revealing some more information about the vehicle’s shape and contours. | | | Take flight, Falcon | | 2006-09-05 13:23:00 | | I haven’t been posting much recently. Readers write to me saying they hope I haven’t quit blogging. The reason for this lull was that I had been grappling with personal problems. Blogging was the last thing on my mind.I had been down in the dumps since two months with no real solution in sight and no one to turn to. Not even my best friend. (Why should he help me? He created the problem!)Thankfully, it’s all over now. Not only have I learnt I lot from this experience I am much happier now than I was before it happened.I am not much into Urdu and Hindi poetry but these lines from a Mohammed Iqbal poem titled Shaheen are some of most inspiring ones I have ever read. I had read it in one of his biographies. It keeps going when little problems bog me down.Tu shaheen hai /parvaaz hai kaam tera/Tere saamne aasmaan aur bhi hai.You are a falcon; your duty is to soar high. You have greater skies to scale. | | By: Crazy Quilt | | |
| | Flash the Falcon - Mascot Sevens | | 2006-06-17 12:52:37 | |
With the dance off and my "meet and greet" now complete, I had about twenty minutes to watch the game itself before heading back to the changing room for the main event, as far as I was concerned, the mascot rugby 7's!
When I reached the dressing room, the atmosphere was much more lively than before. There seemed to be a genuine anticipation around the place this time. I started to climb into the falcon suit and after a few minutes, I noticed that we had an extra mascot, although it wasn't until we were ready to go out that he put all his costume on and I could see what he as. I kid you not, he must have been at least fifteen foot tall! And a wooden spoon! Trying to get him out of the changing room was excellent, I can only liken it to three chaps trying to get a small wardrobe up three flights of stairs, lot's of "To me", "To you" and "You swing your end round and I'll walk forward" kind of talk.

| | Flash the Falcon - The Dance Off | | 2006-06-05 21:43:49 | |
After a week of high anticipation, the big day arrived! Today was the day I would become Flash the Falcon, mascot to the Newcastle Falcons!
I arranged to meet Jon at Twickenham train station to pick up the various passes and instructions for the day, given the occasion I felt there was no better way to do this than to be dressed as a gorilla. It's only a short walk but in that time I managed to get harassed by a mobile phone salesman, waved at by a bunch of old ladies on a bus (when you're hot, you're hot!!) and scare the crap out of some poor kid who just didn't see me coming. Fantastic!
Passes in hand (and now out of the gorilla suit), Lucy and I made our way down to the ground so I could have a quick pint of Guinness before heading to the changing room to transform into a Falcon. At this point, the only photo I'd seen of Flash was on the Newcastle Falcon's website, and my excitement was beginning to be tinged with a degree of nervousness. | | Flash the Falcon - 2 days to go | | 2006-05-26 13:52:22 | | Day 3 was a good day, but sadly not a good day for my training programme.
It started off well enough, healthy breakfast, bit of a walk, healthy lunch, and I still haven't had a cup of tea, water all the way! Then came the beer, I could probably be forgiven the six pints of Carling if I didn't follow it up with a kebab on the way home.
On the plus side, I got my very tasty kebab from the Golden Grill and would you believe it but there's a photo of me on the wall, dressed as a gorilla with the kebab chaps. I didn't reveal my secret identity, I shall keep that under wraps for the time being! | | By: World of Vince.com
| | Flash the Falcon - 3 days to go | | 2006-05-24 23:19:26 | |
It's day 2 of my training programme, only 3 days until I become Flash the Falcon! I had intentions of stepping up my efforts today, it didn't quite work out that way.
Exercise
I started this morning by getting up at 6am for an early morning run, when my alarm went off, I quickly changed this to a mammoth session of lying down...in my bed...asleep. I managed to keep this up for an impressive 75 minutes!
When I got home from work, I thought another bike ride would be in order, or at least a short run, I don't know what actually happened but somehow I managed to bypass all this, head to Marks and Spencers and spend the next half hour eating chicken and playing Xbox.
I did manage a few weights though, does that count?
Diet
Today I gave up drinking tea. Normally, our tea round at work gets through about eight cups of tea each from nine to five, I had none today and drank lots of water instead. I feel knackered!, but Lucy has told me this is normal as the caffeine leaves my syst | | By: World of Vince.com

Jon Duckworth is a legend!
Jon, my best man, has got me the position of Flash the Falcon, the Newcastle Falcons mascot, at the inaugural Guinness Premiership Final 2006 at Twickenham. Duties include the Furry Mascot Dance-off before the game and the Furry Mascot rugby 7's at halftime.
I'm hoping that my adventures as Vince Kong will adequately prepare me for the role but I don't want to let Newcastle Falcons down, so I've put myself through a rigorous physical and mental training program to get ready and in shape for the big day. The programme was introduced tonight, with a full day planned tomorrow!
Exercise
To get those leg muscles back in shape, I've just been on a 6km bike ride. I followed this up with 10 press up's and 20 sit-up's, not a great deal but it's just day one. I've also run around the flat like an idiot for a few minutes, but I normally do that so not sure it counts.
Diet
I've adjusted my diet for the big event, gone are the pies and the lager, repla | | By: World of Vince.com
