Does this make sense? Canadian Gov't pays farmers to kill 150,000 pigs
    2008-05-09 18:39:26
The pork industry is on the verge of collapse in Canada and so the government will be paying $50 million to kill off 150,000 pigs. Each farmer who wants to participate must kill off an entire breeding barn of pigs and agree not to restock the barn for three years. About 25% of the meat will go to food banks; none will enter the market.Besides the rising price of feed, new rules from the U.S. which will require "Country of Origin" labeling is reducing the demand for Canadian pork from American companies.Farmers are encouraged to send their iigs to euthanizing centers, although nothing prevents the pigs from being killed on the farm. Article at Canadian Press. How about if the government helps these farmers transition to crops that will always be needed, that helps the environment by reducing methane, and that doesn't require the taking of a life?Atom

Is Monsanto Targeting Farmers in Scorched Earth Policy?
    2008-05-06 11:27:29
SHOULD WE CARE?If I had a child (and thank goodness I DO NOT) I would not allow them to consume hormone treated anything.  I have a tendency to use organic when I think about it, but then we’re just dealing with me.  I’m not all that worried about what I consume at home.  If I’m cooking it, there’s a 90% chance it will not be edible and I’ll end up throwing it out.  I HATE COOKING!  Seriously, when it comes to children, I don’t think I would do anything but organic, and then would want to trace where ...

    Humor jokes-Old Farmers
    2008-05-04 23:12:57
Two old farmers had hauled a truck load of squirming hogs eighty miles from their west Kansas farm to the nearest market. The old truck had overheated twice; the hogs were keeping the truck rocking, even when it was stopped, and the hot summer Kansas wind was drying them out fast.Within three miles of the market, they passed a tavern and pulled in for a couple of draft beers. The place was dimly lit and air conditioned. After about 20 minutes, one says to the other, "It's going to be really hard to get up, but I reckon we ought to."About that time, a quite obvious prostitute walks up to the bar, works her way in between them, and says, "You guys look about ready for action. I'll do anything you want me to do for $60."The old farmer pulls three $20 bills out of his pocket and replies, "Here you go, Ma'am; git that load of hawgs to the Maple Street auction barn."

Catfish farmers wriggling as prices jump
    2008-04-22 01:01:00
The price of tra and basa catfish has leaped about 1,500 VND/kg in the past month, but the opportunity for a bigger profit may be tempting some farmers to breach existing export contracts in favour of new buyers. High demand on the world market, as well as input costs, drive the price increases, said Buu Huy, deputy director of the An Giang Food and Agricultural Produce Import-Export Co (AFIEX).

    Find Colorado Farmers' Markets
    2008-04-06 10:00:39
The Colorado gold rushes filled many with hopes of wealth and encouraged them to go to great lengths to pan for rare gold nuggets. Today, living in a state where most think vegetables and fruits come from a major grocery store, I feel like the dedicated gold seeker as I look for fresh, locally grown early spring produce. The longer spring days are urging my body to find local produce that still has its water and nutrient content in abundance. Because our climate is not like California or Florida, most of us have to wait until June or July to shop our local markets. At least that is what I used to think but Santa Fe has a winter farmer's market. I haven't been yet, but I am curious to see what is available there. Maybe Coloradan's just aren’t that committed to local produce.Thankful a few hearty souls open the farmer's markets early so I plan to show up right away to see what is available.Boulder's Farmers Market opens April 5, 2008 Fort Collins' Farmers Market opens April 19, 2008High

Picky Eaters In Your Family? Try Buying Fresh From Your Local Farmers Market For Better Taste –9 More Reasons…
    2008-03-28 07:40:00
My son will not eat grocery store fruit because it's too hard, too soft, too sour, too whatever. He will eat any fruit I buy from the farmers market because it tastes good and has the right texture. I know fruits and vegetables from the store do not taste the way they did when I was a kid. It's because of many things like chemicals, being picked unripe, poor soil and the time it spends in trucks before it ever makes it to my store. I buy local because I want my son to eat fruits and veggies and I want them to be clean (remember the recalls.)Why buy local? 1. Locally grown food tastes better.Food grown in your own community was probably picked within the past day or two. It's crisp, sweet and loaded with flavor. Produce flown or trucked in from California, Florida, Chile or Holland is, quite understandably, much older. Several studies have shown that the average distance food travels from farm to plate is 1,500 miles. In a week-long (or more) delay from harvest to dinner table, sugars

In 2007, Vietnamese rice exports were just $5 cheaper than rice exported from Thailand. Prof Vo Tong Xuan tells the Sai Gon Economic Times why he doesn’t think this is indicative of a narrowing price gap. The Greatest Wonders of Farmers Auto Insurance in Flint, Michigan
    2008-02-22 18:06:24
Often, by the time that they reach young or middle adulthood, individuals and families have located an insurance company in whom they have trusted for several years. These companies, such as Farmers auto insurance in Flint, Michigan, have demonstrated an excellent track record of customer service and less costly premium rates. When people move from state to state, they often take these preferences along. Drivers with Farmers Auto Insurance who lived before in Georgia, for example, will usually prefer to continue working with the same insurance company as long as this company is licensed to provide insurance in the new state. They will probably, however, need to locate a new agent after moving. While many companies are licensed in nearly all of the 50 states, a few are not, and it is important to check and make sure that the company you want to use is licensed in the state in which you reside. In addition, the company that you have used before may or may not offer the best rates in Michig

Spending Money on Farmers Through the Tax Code
    2007-09-11 07:00:00
We all know that farmers don't get enough money from Washington through traditional spending means (i.e. direct appropriations). So Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) feels it is necessary to further increase spending to farmers indirectly through the tax code. From the Associated Press:The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee is proposing a series of agricultural tax credits, bonds and a trust fund as part of a farm bill that would give billions in aid to farmers and pay for the nation's nutrition programs.Montana Sen. Max Baucus, a Democrat, said Tuesday that his committee will find an extra $8 billion to $10 billion through new agriculture-related tax proposals. That would be added to the bill's baseline spending, estimated to be more than $280 billion over five years....The finance panel's proposals include a trust fund that would pay for weather-related disaster assistance - a priority in Baucus's home state. That could set up a fight with Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin

    Shop green at farmers markets
    2007-05-19 13:00:09
One way to make sure that your weekly or daily grocery shopping trip is as eco friendly as possible is to find a local farmers market and get your groceries there, of course you may not be able to get everything that you need, but as far as food is concerned there is nothing more eco friendly than buying from the person who grows it. By using local resources you are cutting out on all the traveling that your food would normally be doing, supermarkets and food manufacturers transport food all over the country, sometimes it is bought in one place gets transported to the central distribution points and finally sometimes returns right back to where it started from, all those miles to end up a few hundred yards from where it was grown, now that is defiantly not eco friendly. Why not give it try; you never know it could start you on the road to a new eco friendly life. Farmers given a greater gas allowance
    2007-05-04 07:00:00
Delaware onlineOnce upon a time -- before the Internet -- people sought out plant experts such as Eddie and Debbie Morris who absorbed knowledge the old-fashioned way, at the hands of parents and grandparents. As third-generation growers at W.D. Martine & Sons Inc. on their spread along Shipley Road in Brandywine Hundred, Eddie and Debbie are caretakers of a business, as well as inheritors of a lineage of knowledge that stretches back 100 years. A sign still refers to Eddie, 69, and Debbie, 68, as floriculturists (flower growers), a term used to refer to the business since World War II. With gas rationing, flower growers were considered farmers and given a greater gas allowance than horticulturists, considered plant specialists....

    Solemn Ritual of Rice Farmers
    2007-02-08 01:54:00
It's the regular ceremony performed by farmers in Klungkung regency, notably in the subak teritory of Kacang Dawa located some 4.5 km south of Semarapura city. This ceremony is executed when the planting season comes. Within a year there are paddy and and crop plant seasons. They cultivate twice crops and one paddy. The most unique ritual can be encontered on the paddy season (usually in November to December). Prior to planting the rice, they cultivate the soil twice. The second one is meant to eradicate the entire weeds so when the paddy flourishes the growth of weeds could be minimized. When the soil has been cultivated for two times, farmers get down to find the propitous day to plant the rice seedlings. More than that, on commencing to scatter rice seeds is also carried out on a finely selected day. A propitous day to do this is called meniwih. By such propitous day, they believe that the rice planted seeds will develop in a healthy or vigorous way, away from the plant’
