Midwest Floods Devastate The Farms Of America's Breadbasket As The Global Food Crisis Deepens
    2008-06-17 12:17:00
The New York Times had an excellent article on the Midwest floods and how they are playing havoc with America's breadbasket at a time when the world food crisis is getting worse by the day.The article contains these stunning statements by one Iowa farmer:“In the lean years, we had beautiful crops but they weren’t worth much,” Mr. Timmerman said, surveying his farm, which his family has tended since his great-great-grandfather. “Now, with commodity prices sky high, mother nature is throwing us all these curve balls. I’m 42 years old and these are by far the poorest crops I’ve ever seen.”These floods seem to be coming at the worst possible time. Food riots have been popping up in the poorest countries of the world, and commodity prices are flying through the roof. One billion people in the world do not have enough food right now. What is going to happen if these floods continue and things get worse? One thought to ponder: Right now as you read this, the strategic reserve of t

The Loss of the Small Family Farms to Build New Houses, Stores, Roads, Power Lines, My Thoughts
    2008-06-16 10:17:20
I grew up on a dairy then beef cattle farm. When I was a young girl so many dairy farms around each mile, now there is not even a farmer within a mile. It is the same story for many others it is a sad moment in many lives with people in my farming community that is no longer a farming community. Why did small farms go out of business is because not making a profit and then larger cooperate farms took over. The bigger farmers have more cows than the smaller farmer then that makes them go out of

Organic Consumers: Small farms more profitable
    2008-06-01 12:44:13
SMALL FARMS ARE MORE PRODUCTIVE AND PROFITABLE A 1,000 acre U.S. corporate farm growing genetically engineered crops nets an average of $39 an acre.In contrast, a four-acre family farm nets, on average, $1,400 per acre.Small organic farms are proving to be even more profitable. With oil prices on the rise, growing food without petroleum-based pesticides/fertilizers, and delivering that food to local markets will quickly prove to be the most affordable food available. Source: New York Times http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_12216.cfmVery hopeful, informative article on the roots of Community Supported Agriculture at Rodale, which is where the photo is from, including mention of Indian Line Farm is South Egremont, MA.Atom

Most Google adsense due to link farms
    2008-04-09 08:14:42
But let’s start with the part that really gets my goat, which is the buying of advertising. As a small software vendor with a number of products I’ve some time ago turned to Web advertising with Google because the magazine market at which I had frequently advertised in the past has simply disappeared. When [...]

    Tom's Farms
    2008-03-27 23:54:00
If you happen to be in the Corona/Lake Elsinore area sometime, make sure to make a pit stop with the family at Tom's Farms. My husband and I lived in Corona for a couple of years and anytime we had friends or family come out and visit we made sure to take them to this little gem. Tom's Farms is nestled in the Temescal Canyon and it first started out as a little produce stand more than 30 years ago. Tom's farms has come a long way from a small produce stand and is now home to a couple of restaurants. My favorite is Senor's Frogs(mmm.. they have the best nachos and breakfast burritos),they are also home to Tom's Olde Fashioned Hamburgers and Patio Pizza. On the weekends you can take the kiddos on a ride on Tom's Farms 1800's steam-propelled train! Tour the property and beautiful countryside, including a trip under an Amish-style covered bridge. The kids will also love the carnival rides, balloon artists, face painting and every one's favorite and old fashi

    Strawberry Picking at Tanaka Farms
    2007-06-18 21:11:00
We visited Tanaka Farms on Saturday to do some strawberry picking. Tanaka is an organic farm located on 30 acres in Irvine, California. It's a beautiful place to tour and has something for kids and adults. During the tour, you take a ride around the farm while learning about and tasting a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. The strawberry picking tour included samplings of organic green beans, celery, carrots, maui onions, and more. Then, you get to explore the strawberry fields where you can pick and eat as many strawberries as you like. They are incredibly delicious and a lot of fun to pull right from the vine. After the strawberry patch, the tractor ride takes you back to the storefront where they give you a basket of strawberries to take home with you. The Strawberry Tour is less than $15 per person and is a great way to spend an hour with your friends and family. It's also a nice way to teach kids about healthy eating habits and trying a variety of fruits and vegetables.

400 farms opened on Open Farm Sunday
    2007-06-14 07:00:00
FwiMore than 400 farms opened their gates last Sunday as part of Open Farm Sunday. Attendance figures are still coming in, but Caroline Drummond from organiser LEAF reckons that more than 50,000 members of the public turned out to enjoy a vast range of activities on farms across the nation. And, best of all, the rain held off and the sun shone. For host farms it was the culmination of weeks of preparation, marking out farm trails, tidying up farmyards, putting up signs, dreaming up imaginative games for children, readying vast barbecues, washing down tractors and preparing to field the odd challenging question...

    Farms and the Upcoming Season
    2007-04-18 07:00:00
East bayriSpring has sprung, and while it may seem a little too chilly just yet to consider digging in the garden, area farms are hard at work getting their crops ready for the spring and summer rush. In the north end of Seekonk, R&R Farm on Newman Avenue opened earlier this month selling Easter flowers the owners purchased, but now Richard Curzake, who was named for his father, Richard, (hence the "R&R" name) is focused on annuals, perennials, mulches and soils....

    Lilac farms
    2007-04-17 07:00:00
SlateWhen we drive by farms in the northern tier of the United States and much of rural Canada, and you will see groves of lilac bushes next to outhouses. Or, more probably, next to the places where outhouses used to be. It was a common practice to put lilacs by the privy, though the flowers with the helpful mitigating scents lasted only about two weeks...
