Olympic Charade Goes On ...While fearless Protestor Attempts to grasp the Torch
    2008-04-06 20:13:00
Sir Steve Redgrave started by passing the torch, where 80 sport and performers will continue on the 31 mile run from Wembley to the O2 Arena. Three arrests occurred as the torch arrived at a bus to carry the torch, within seconds.Nick Cleg Lib Dem Leader urged PM Brown not to accept his role in receiving the flame until China communicates with the Dalai Lama. Voicing how he felt he expressed Browns partaking in this, was just "wholly inappropriate".He continued by pointing out the reality how human rights have been continually abused. Dame Kelly Holmes will end the run before lighting the torch in front of 5,000 onlookers. This has high lighted the Chinese Olympics but not in the way they would Source: news.bbc.co.uk

    Fearless and willful
    2008-03-27 22:39:45
Stirring the wind, fearless and willful, frozen in flight. Some areas of the lower sparrow’s wings have been worn raw, a hard life I’m sure. Buy a print of this image. We’re snowbound again, a wintry spring start. See two sparrows battling the winter wind.

Fearless Forecast, Revisited: UEFA Champions League Round Of 16
    2008-02-18 21:42:00
When the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 pairings were drawn, this site offered a preliminary forecast, with a promise to revisit the matter closer to kick off. That time is now. Our main guide is still the Top 25 ranking of the world's soccer clubs, (the number in parentheses is the team's corresponding ranking this week; the first leg's home teams are listed first):Liverpool (unranked) vs. Inter Milan (1)Tuesday, 2:30pm EST (ESPN2)Most audiences in the U.S. will get this one tomorrow. A shame, because it's sure to be a blowout. Inter have better players at virtually every position, with Fernando Torres really the only Red capable of starting for the Milan side. To make matters worse, Reds just suffered a new low this weekend, when they lost at home to Barnsley in the FA Cup. Roberto Mancini's side have not lost to anybody since Sept. 19. Only the most delusional Scouser would give Reds any realistic chance of winning this one. And yet, many apparently still do. Pity the fools...Ro

    Tippi The fearless girl
    2008-01-13 22:48:00
Tippi is a tiny blond girl who lives in Africa. She has a brother by the name of Abu who weighs five tons, and her cats are huge and much stronger than her daddy. This may sound like surrealistic fiction, but it is the true story of Tippi, daughter of two French filmmakers and wildlife photographers, working in southern Africa. Their life in the bush, dunes and swamps, and about Tippi's endearing kinship with wild animals, particularly Abu, a five-ton elephant..

Fearless Playoff Predicitions - Divisional Round
    2008-01-10 06:38:11
A 3-1 wild-card round has me feeling confident as we head into a solid Week 2 in the NFL Playoffs.  Whether you are for or against the Patriots, their pursuit of perfect is must see TV, and a third matchup of the season between the Cowboys and Giants might be the best game of the weekend.  Fun, fun, fun.  Let's break it down, and as always, feel free to give your thoughts as well.... SATURDAY GAMES - Seattle Seahawks @ Green Bay Packers -- We all know my deep, heart-felt feelings about Brett Favre.  That said, he has had a great season and is a major reason the Pack is back in the NFC.  The bigger reason is a solid defense that has been rebuilt from the ground up by Tim Thompson and Mike McCarthy to be the calling card of the Pack for when Favre does finally decide to hang them up.  For Seattle, they could easily be the darkhorse of the NFC, and no one knows Lambeau Field in January better than Mike Holmgren.  The Seahawks are always prepared in the

Fearless Forecast: UEFA Champions League Round Of 16
    2007-12-22 10:01:00
It's time for the first-ever Soccer Source Fearless Forecast, as we zero in on the just-drawn UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match-ups. Our main guide will be the Top 25 ranking of soccer clubs, a season-long work-in-progress that attempts to gauge the standings of the best club teams in the world. The assumption here is that the Top 25 ranking--due to its superior use of data-mining and keen insight--is roughly accurate and as such a reliable prognosticator. A flawed assumption? You bet, but so too are all forecasts as well as all assumptions (remember that when you ASSume you make an ass out of you and me). Onward:Schalke (ranked 23 at time of this writing) vs. Porto (6)The German side just made their debut on the list, and to much contention at that. Readers made some excellent points as to why the Gelsenkircheners don't belong. Their issues will be addressed in Monday's Top 25 but for now the point is that Schalke look far inferior to their Portuguese opponents. Forecast: Porto takes it without problems.Roma (8) vs. Real Madrid (2)This one looks a bit closer to call. Real have spent most of the season in the top 5 but Roma have played well and are second in Serie A behind mighty Inter. Potentially the most entertaining match-up as Roma play an energetic, attacking (and I might add, un-Italian) style and Real have quite a bit of their own firepower (to put it mildly). This one will be fun. Who will win? Probably Real, but like I said the margin for error is not very wide at all.Olympiakos (9) vs. Chelsea (7)Another match-up featuring top 10 teams. As far as I can tell, this one hinges on who Chelsea have at their disposal when the sides meet Feb. 19. Drogba? Essien? Terry? If the answers are yes, yes and yes, then figure Chelsea to advance. But Olympiakos are tough and have shown they can play with anybody--even a fully-staffed Chelsea side. Forecast: Too close to call right now.Liverpool (14) vs. Inter Milan (1)Rafa Benitez' team (if it will in fact still

Fun Fearless Female 2006 (FFF 2006)

    Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart
    2007-12-18 07:21:00
While doing the research for the 50+ books I selected for the Changemaker Library, I realized that I love writing about good books. I have been reading for 60 years so I have a long history of what books can influence lives. I don't do book reviews. Instead, I give the book title, the author, the ISBN number and a link to Amazon to buy it. I also include excerpts from the book chosen so that a reader can decide if this book is a good match for him/her. Every Tuesday, I’ll include one of the books which is chosen to match the weekly topic. Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart Brian Luke Seaward ISBN 0-471-67999-2 Amazon link From the author— “Current statistics suggest that 1/3 of the American population is one anti-depressants. Alcoholism, drug addiction, self-mutilation, and suicide are just some of the more popular ways that people cope with their stress today. Through these tactics, people merely avoid the problems at hand, rather than work to resolve them. For stress to be dealt with effectively, no matter how much pressure is bearning down on use, avoidance is rarely a viable option.” “If you listen closely to people’s conversations, yu might notice how they tend to be stuck: not processing every aspect of a given situation to make sense of it, but rehashing thoughts and feelings, which, in turn, only validates their stress.” “In what is often called the Universal Law of Attraction, a critical mass of negativity forms, and like a magnet, our mental focus begins to attract more things to complain about. As a result, we get caught in a whirlpool of negativity, from which is is really hard to escape. In the words of Marcel Proust, “The real act of discovery is not in finding new lands, but in seeing with new eyes.” Attitude, once again, is the paintbrush with which we color our world.” From Chapter 5: The Human Equinox: Six Ways to Bring Balance into Your Life— 1) Work life balanced with personal life 2) Freedom balanced with discip

    2007-08-02 20:51:12

Yikes. Last week, well, aaah, well, ummm, ahem, wasn’t anyone’s best week, including TFF.  The cool thing about anti-picking palindromic tickers is that when they go in TFF’s favor, it’s a double victory, and when they don’t, well, let’s not dwell on the past. Today Credit Suisse upgraded CME, which opened today at $541, so TFF is downgrading EMC, which opened today at $13.45, and today Bank of America downgraded ALD, which opened at $30.00, so TFF is upgrading DLA, which opened today at $17.00. The complete numbers for the year so far, complete with closing prices from Friday the 2nd, are here.

The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for February 26th, 2007
    2007-02-26 16:31:28
The background info about The Fearless Frog is here. WPS is now TEG due to a merger.  Number of shares, price, etc. are not affected by this change and TEG is still the company picked by TFF as the inverse of Deutsche’s SPW upgrade. The last couple of weeks, while TFF was on vacation, TFF’s portfolio must have gone along as well.  The TFF portfolio slipped a little against the Wall Street portfolio, but a couple of big winners will turn that around.  And, wouldn’t you know it, here are a couple of big winning picks now!  Today Friedman upgraded NSM, which opened today at $26.10, so TFF is downgrading MSN, which opened today at $3.37.  TFF would prefer not to include stocks that trade at less that $5, but when there is only one ticker in the Wall Street upgrades/downgrades list that is an actual ticker when reversed, TFF has no choice.  William Blair downgraded CC today, which means TFF is upgrading it.  CC opened the day’s trading at $20.39. The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for February 12th, 2007
    2007-02-12 16:55:46
The background info about The Fearless Frog is here. While TFF was ill this past week, the TFF portfolio most certainly was not. TFF picked up .20 percent percent this week, and is breathing down The Wall Street portfolio’s neck (but only in a competitive way- not in a way that would cause the WS portfolio to feel uncomfortable). TFF was blessed with a couple of palindromic tickers, so that chocolate cake that TFF’s wife’s cousins left here last night won’t have to go uneaten for long (TFF finished all of the homemade power bars, so that leaves chocolate cake as the only thing in the house for breakfast).  Pity.  Today Matrix downgraded CLC and CIBC upgraded Q, so TFF is taking the opposite position on those two stocks.  CLC opened at $33.51 and Q opened at $8.10.  The complete numbers for the year so far, complete with closing prices from Friday the 9th, are here.

The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for February 5, 2007
    2007-02-05 16:32:42
The background info about The Fearless Frog is here. TFF leaned on the flippers this week, and now is a mere 2.36 percent behind Wall Street for 2007. Today BB&T downgraded FL, which opened at $22.68, so TFF is upgrading LF, which opened at $10.39. AG Edwards upgraded NNN, so TFF is downgrading it.  NNN opened today at $25.00. The complete numbers for the year so far, complete with closing prices from Friday the 2nd, are here.

The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for 1/29/2007
    2007-01-29 18:30:49
The background info about The Fearless Frog is here. TFF came storming back this week and made up 3 percent on Wall Street, and now trails by a mere 2.70 percent.  Today Robert Baird upgraded OMI, which opened at $33.75, so TFF is downgrading IMO, which opened at $34.28.  Bear Stearns downgraded MGM, and since TFF came out on top last week in the head-to-head CVC matchup, AND since TFF got off to a late start this morning and you wouldn’t believe how many stock symbols DON’T wind up spelling a legitimate stock symbol when you reverse the letters and how tiring it gets seeing the Yahoo page say “INVALID STOCK SYMBOL,” TFF is upgrading MGM.  MGM opened at $69.60. The complete numbers for the year so far, complete with closing prices from Friday the 26th, are here.

The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for 1/22/07
    2007-01-22 18:28:03
The background info about The Fearless Frog is here. TFF still trails Wall Street in this early stage of 2007, but has narrowed the gap to only 6.03 percent.  This week UBS upgraded VOD, which opened at $29.50, so TFF is downgrading DOV, which opened at $48.84.  Citigroup downgraded CVC, so, in a particularly aggressive move, since when you read “CVC” backwards, you get, well, CVC, TFF is upgrading it.  Keep your eyes on this one.  CVC opened today at $29.90. The complete numbers for the year so far are here.

The Fearless Frog’s Stock Picks for January 16, 2007
    2007-01-16 16:09:42
My Monday column has been moved to today, because the markets were closed yesterday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   If, by the way, you live anywhere within a million miles of Memphis, you should go to The Civil Rights Museum.  Very, very moving.  TFF took it on the chin this week, but, flipper raised high, will continue on.  TFF trails Wall Street by 6.27 percent after the first week of the new “Alphabetic Inversion and Chart Reversal” investment plan.  TFF’s web hosting service is doing maintenance on the control panel, so the spreadsheet cannot be posted at this time, but it was ugly.  It’s too bad TFF was too honest to include the thumpin’ handed to Wall Street last year in the numbers.  You had better believe TFF shareholders are upset about the change in strategy.  But, as we like to say at TFF, “The early bird is late if you look at it from another time zone.”  We’re not sure what that means, but we like to s

    The Fearless Frog Opens 2007
    2007-01-08 16:21:23
Fresh off a 2006 victory, TFF will begin implementing a new strategy in 2007.  Instead of finding strange and unusual ways to generate random stock picks, TFF will simply go through the list of upgrades/downgrades each Monday on the MSN Money page and make picks based on reversing the letters of the Wall Street picks.  Today JP Morgan downgraded ESV, which opened at $48.41.  So TFF will UPGRADE VSE, which opened at $18.50.  Cowen upgraded GD, which opened at $76.10, so TFF is DOWNGRADING DG, which opened at $16.50.  Interestingly, DG is one of the stocks TFF traded on the options floor of The Pacific Exchange a few years ago.  DG didn’t really make or lose money for TFF, so the pick today isn’t an emotional one, just an example of the “Alphabetical Inversion and Chart Reversal” stock picking technique first unveiled here and now.   Thus opens 2007.

The Fearless Frog’s 2006 Stock Market Performance Review
    2006-12-31 16:38:26
Now, then.  If I was a self-interested con artist, or a marketing executive, or in advertising or promotion, I would start this post with something like: “THE FEARLESS FROG’S PORTFOLIO BEAT WALL STREET BY 17.34%* IN 2006!” *Annualized amount based on 4 months of results Then I would tell you to send me lots of money for my hot stock tips.  The truth is, however, and this is what the whole Fearless Frog is based on, I don’t know what stocks are going to go up or down, but neither does anyone else.  The final 2006 numbers, for the picks made completely at random every Monday since September 11th (except the last 2, partly due to laziness and partly due to slow updates on the MSN upgrades/downgrades page), TFF is positive 4.29% and the The Wall Street portfolio, made up of the most strongly worded recommendations from Wall Street on those same dates, is down 1.49%.  This gives TFF a victory margin of 5.78%.  All of the final 2006 numbers are here.
