The Feast Day of St. Peter & St. Paul
    2008-07-01 00:56:42
MONDAY, JUNE 30I'm finally getting the hang of the DSL here.  It is faster than mine at home, but very quirky.  I think if I were closer to the hub I might not have as many problems with it.  It is a good 15 degrees cooler this summer here in Tombstone than it was last year.  I'm still hot and bothered, but it is mainly frustration tempered with exhaustion. Last night I slept for 10 hours.  It is probably because I drove the whole way, after having no sleep the previous night.  Doc was celebrating the fact that Rumsfeld ...

    A feast of St. Bush
    2008-04-06 15:13:30
All through the long winter, I dream of my garden. On the first day of spring,I dig my fingers deepinto the soft earth.I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar. (H. Hayes)I haven't done any work here for a while. Shame on me. Instead I spent the last few days having to do nothing but gardening. And all thanks to George Bush, spoiling us with a prolonged weekend. One of the greatest living dumbbells decided to visit the capital of Lilliput, Zagreb, for two days. And despite of all the annoyances, traffic jams, and the security measures that preceded and followed his parade, I spent a few lovely spring days digging the dirt and fighting the weeds. To my utmost delight, the Botanical garden opened its door the other day but it was within the parade zone so instead of green thumbs visiting, it was full of Double You's secret agents. I can't wait to visit next week. The buzzing of the military aircrafts is gone, that must mean that Air Force One has taken him to another country ''to sprea

Feast For Your Eyes: Italian Tuning Show Babes
    2008-04-01 17:27:00
“My Special Car Show” is an automotive customisation exhibition that took place at Rimini Fiera in Italy from 28 to 30 March, 2008. As with all tuning salons, there was no shortage of babes at “My Special Car Show”. Luckily for us, our fellow blogger-buddies at Autoblog.it were kind enough to capture many of the babes on film so we can get a taste of what we missed out on. Did we mention that there were a lot of poles at the exhibition centre in Rimini? –Image gallery after the jump Via: Autoblog.it

I was going to post a Friday's feast today but then, I couldn't find the one I wanted to post here due to that the Friday's Feast's site has moved to a new host. Now there is no archive, I can't find any post I want to share. So I guess, I am out of ideas for now. I will just have to come back someday, or maybe not since I am too late to catch up. Mario Vargas Llosa: The Feast of the Goat
    2008-02-14 04:44:00
Francisco Goldman reviews Mario Vargas Llosa's The Feast of the Goat. The Feast of the Goat, nearly documentary in tone, is a dense, dramatic, at times almost unbearably cruel and relentless political novel. It belongs to the illustrious tradition of the Latin American–dictator novel, in this case the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. But it is also a culmination of two searches

    A South African Feast
    2008-02-04 02:33:00
Although I have never been, I have always had a bit of a love affair with South Africa. Back in my singing days I almost had the opportunity to play Carmen in Johannesburg, but unfortunately it fell through. At the time I did a lot of research and was thrilled at the thought of living in such a diverse and historic place, if only for a month or two. Going to an international school meant I had several South African friends as well. They have the most beautiful accent, a soft lilting melody that just makes me smile.Given my obsession passion for food, this was obviously a big part of my research. I remember loving the sound of Bobotie, a dish that every South African has their own version of, perhaps a bit like our own Shepherd's Pie. I used to read a lot of Wilbur Smith and this dish would come up in his books as well. I love the history of the dish. I can just imagine the first European settlers discovering wonderful new flavours and spices in Africa and coming up with this un

The Feast of the Black Nazarene
    2008-01-08 22:51:00
The feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9 is considered one of the most spectacular religious events that take place in the Philippine history.Every year thousands of devotees from all walks of life come to the district of Quiapo to take part in the procession as a way of strengthening their faith or fulfilling their “panata” (vow) to Lord. The Black Nazarene is the patron saint of Quiapo, a small but well-known part of Manila, a hub of trade and commerce because of the Quiapo market and the many stores located there. The life size image of the Black Nazarene shows a “black” Jesus Christ carrying a cross. The statue has been housed at the Saint John de Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila also known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene since 1787. The image of the Black Nazarene is brought out in procession on its feast day and Good Friday. The statue was brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607 aboard a ship. The ship caught fire, burning the image and thus came to be known as the Black Nazarene. Though the image was burnt, the people decided to preserve and honor it. Since then, miraculous things have been reported to those who touch the image. The celebration starts as the huge door of Quiapo Church opens and the image of the Black Nazarene is within sight. The ocean of devotees start to yell “Viva Señor” while some wave white towel high in the air along with the scripture of the Black Nazarene. The statue is placed in a gilded carriage for the procession. As the procession starts, procession participants garbed in maroon tops grab two long ropes and pull it to make the carriage move. Many will attempt to touch the image while some throw their handkerchiefs and towels in the air. People who join in the procession walk barefooted as a sign of humility. The devotion to the Black Nazarene is long time practice of the Filipino Catholics and they believe that through their faith with Jesus Christ, there will be peace and harmony among families, long

    To feast upon souls
    2008-01-06 00:00:00
I feast on the blood of his soul, bathing my body in in the crimson fluids of eternal life. Shedding my earthly clothing, exposing my flesh as blood covers me. Feeling the power my hands wield, fixated on the kill before me. As if a mighty lion, its belly thin, wrought with hunger, before it devours it feast. Raising my hands outstretched unto heaven, as the dark red juice of life, flows over my face. My lips awash with it as I drink it in, feasting on the immortal flavor. The warm wash of life, stains my skin as I devour its enchanting power. I reel in horror and ecstasy at the same moment, as I engorge myself on the blood of my kill, the blood from his soul, that is now mine. I drink it in total splendor, draw forth from it my reward. As the faces of demons howl about me, chanting that I consume. Coaxing me to join their evil banquet, to take my part of the feast, before they may partake in it. Waiting to rip the departed soul, rip it in pieces and devour their fill. Surreptitious

And am not I life and health? In my lap art thou, and counted as mine. What more dost thou need? I shall show my tender clemency for those who love and seek me, for all who implore my protection, who call on me in their labors and afflictions. - - Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego I also wanted to share this great video from Love to be Catholic: God bless, Jay

Feast of our patron Immaculate Concepcion
    2007-12-08 22:07:00
Last day that was December 8 Baranggay Bulua celebrated the feast of Immaculate Concepcion. I would say that Bulua is one of the biggest Baranggay in Cagayan de Oro City; there are twelve zones in this Baranggay and our house is located at Zone-8 sea side. The Baranggay officials offer lots of activities to the people to have fun and enjoy the feast. December 6 there was a coronation night for “Mutya ng Bulua” held at Bulua gym. The youth also enjoyed the disco party and singing contest. Friday night we’re too busy cleaning the house, washing dishes in preparation for the feast. At the morning of the feast there was a mass at the church and a procession of the patron Immaculate Concepcion. Sad to say I wasn’t able to join the said procession, I and my sister are too busy with the household task. For me the mass is very important but I was not there, huhuhu. When the feast come our relatives, neighbors, family friends, co-workers and friends joined us for lunch to thank our patron for the abundant blessings she gave. Having a feast is not easy; I’m so tired until now, huh! I got only two pictures to share with you. I no longer took pictures then because I’m too busy entertaining, chit chatting with my visitors, hehehe.our foods! wlai lechon kai crisis hehehemy sis making fruit salad

The Feast of The Exaltation of the Cross
    2007-09-14 16:23:16
Today is the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. For many Catholics it is just another feast day. Yet what is the reason for feast days (another article, for another time)? Why did the Church feel compelled to create this feast day? What is its significance to you and me? The origin of this feast is a little cloudy, most Church historians trace it back to Pope Sergius I (687-701). It originally commemorated the recovery of the True Cross from the Persians who had taken it (or at least a portion of it). However, over time the feast also became linked to the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena. Today we commemorate both events. Down through the ages, Catholics have always felt it necessary to honor the cross, as the instrument of our salvation. This feast calls us to rejoice in that reality, both from a salvific prespective and in its material presence - the True Cross. Pope Benedict in meditating on the Cross wrote: Looked at more deeply this sign, which forces us to look at the dangerousness of man and all his heinous deeds, at the same time makes us look upon God, who is stronger, stronger in his weakness, and upon the fact that we are loved by God. It is in this sense a sign of forgiveness that also brings hope into the abysses of history... God is crucified and says to us that this God who is apparently so weak is the God who incomprehensibly forgives us and who in his seeming absence is stronger. - Benedictus: Day by Day with Pope Benedict XVI This is the call to you and to me....we must recognize how dangerous our fallen nature is, but, at the same time, how great the love of God is and how powerful His forgiveness is...capable of transforming us, renewing us. Yet that transformation always contains the Cross, for in imitating Christ was must follow Him for He is the Way. That Way leads inevitably to Calvary, to the Cross. Thomas a Kempis, in his Imitation of Christ, wrote: If you would be high in heaven, be lowly in this world. If you want rule beside (Him), carry the cross at (His) side; it is only those who are servants of the cross who find the road to happiness and unfeigning light...so come on, brothers, let us advance together; Jesus will be with us. It is for the sake of Jesus that we have taken up this cross; for His sake let us keep on with it to the end. He will help us, for He has gone before us to be our guide. May this feast day be a constant reminder to you of our Lord Jesus' love for you and of the sign of our salvation. In Christ, Joe

And so I unveil - The Ultimate Family Feast
    2007-01-29 16:30:18
"If our family came together in one giant reunion and all had to prepare something for us to feast on, what would they bring? The scenario is hardly feasible considering our family spans half of the world's continents, but the question is certainly interesting when the family is full of foodies. The Ultimate Family Feast brings together the families’ favourite recipes retaining them for the future. With an eclectic mix - spanning generations and cuisines. From war time rationing, “Mystery Tart” to decadent homemade croissants. From Mexican rice pudding to Finnish “Pulla” and Australian pavlova. The 33 recipes would surely make an ultimate feast for any large family." And so says the back of mine and Dan's new book, that yesterday we finally uploaded and published on lulu.com. I really can't describe the relief of having it done. It was meant for a Christmas present for our family. Unfortunately, our due date slipped away and we had to make a push this January to really get it done. A good reason, I think, for an absence on the blogging scene. With this post, I unveil it to the world, including our family - who are still waiting patiently for their Christmas presents. To them: as soon as we receive our tester print - your copy will be in the post! The book, in some way, also reflects on the kind of cooking I've done in the early months of my blog. During the last 9 months or so, I've rekindled my passion for food, re-discovered recipes I've loved, and lightly dabbled in new techniques and styles. For the next year, I'm aiming for more experimentation, more recipes, less guff and hopefully, a more technical style. With this last project completed, I can now focus on the future.Of course, please feel free to head over to our lulu storefront to preview the book, and of course, purchase it if you so desire!I'm certainly looking forward to 2007!

    A Christmas feast for two
    2006-12-27 13:34:26
Indeed, this was a Christmas feast for just the two of us. We hardly even got through a third of it - though we did have a good go. From left to right - not including the magnificent goosey gander we had: my homemade fruit mince pies, creamed brussel sprouts, roasted parsnips, roasted potatoes, sage and onion stuffing and a couple of yorkie puds. The parsnips, potatoes and yorkies were all cooked in goose fat which achieved crisp, tasty results. The goose itself, was, and still is, intensly rich and flavoursome. Tonight we're having goose hash. I bet Mum wishes she was here.Over Christmas, I've had a bit of time to reflect on what my blog is about. Hopefully, in the new year I'm planning to push my boundaries a little bit further and attempt dishes and flavours that I haven't perhaps tried before. I want to visit different cuisines and techniques and explore my own personal tastes. With that in mind, I'm going to take a bit of time off, not only to recover from my illness but to spend more time searching and thinking about where I want my blog to go. I'll start posting again from about the 12th of January and I look forward to seeing everyone on the other side. I hope everyone has had a feastful Christmas and I wish everyone a wonderful and joyous New Year.Without further ado, my much anticipated Christmas pudding.
