Fermented Crap Mixture Is The New Drug: I'll Stick With Beer
    2007-11-10 03:55:00
The simple fact that anyone could even dream something like this up astounds, but doesn't amaze me. When you consider a mentally deranged wheelchair bound pervert was capable of creating a fortune by putting pictures of naked women into magazines and getting it classified as art, nothing really amazes me anymore.Moving on,...Supposedly, this is some new phenomenon among teens. I guess kids will in fact be kids, and some people will try anything once. Glenn Beck even had a mention of it in one of his newsletters HERE. The so called "drug" I'm referring to here is called 'Jenkem' and it's made by fermenting raw sewage. Basically, your supposed to put urine and excrement in a bottle and let it sit for a few days, with a balloon stretched over the top to catch the escaping gas. Then your supposed to inhale that gas.Right......I'll take a beer, you can have the 'turd-gas'.Fortunately, it's not the massive problem that the Glenn Beck newsletter could potentially cause people to bel...

    Fermented Herring
    2007-08-16 12:47:43
I promise. I would never force you to eat fermented herring (sw. surströmming). It is a northern Swedish delicacy food. However, many people never get used to neither the smell nor the taste. They are avoiding this fermented food dish forever. Those who are familiar with the durian fruit say that fermented herring stinks worse. The Baltic herring is caught in spring, when it is just about to spawn, then fermented in barrels with a minimum of salt for one to two months, and finally tinned where the fermentation continues. The third Thursday in August is traditionally the right time to eat fermented herring (surströmming). It smells so bad you have to open the can outdoors. It is best eaten indoors because the smell attracts the flies. Then "the gas" will fill the whole house for at least a couple of days. Despite the disgusting smell, this is how we like to eat fermented herring.INGREDIENTS:serves 2 - 4* 1 tin fermented herring (10 - 12 herrings )* new potatoes, boiled with dill* red onion, finely chopped* tomatoes, finely chopped* dill, finely chopped* crème fraiche* soft thin bread* butter* beer* a mix of Swedish spiced vodka (Reimersholm Swedish Schnapps)METHOD:1. Fork a whole fish from the tin, and slice it down the middle.2. Remove its soft insides, and open the herring.3. Stamp it with the fork, the bone loosens and it can be filleted.4. Cut it into small pieces.5. Take a piece of soft "tunnbröd" (thin bread), plaster the bread with butter.6. Slice boiled potatoes, place the slices evenly on the bread.7. Sprinkle with herring pieces and the tomato-onion mixture.8. Finally put a big dollop of crème fraiche on top.9. Roll it up, make a wrap, take a bite and wash it down with beer.A Herring WrapSchnappsA spiced schnapps is often a must. There should be a great variety to choose from. A warning though: Eating fermented herring and drinking too much alcohol will get you hangover. "You open your eyes the next morning, wishing you had not”.Singing schnapps songs when lifting the glass is an old tradition. The most well-known Swedish schnapps song is "Helan går".Hell and goreChank happ fallerallan-layHell and goreChank happ fallerallan-layOh handsome in the hell and tarand hell are in the half and fourHell and goreChank happ fallerallan-lay (An English version)http://minareceptsamlingar.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss...

    Fermented Clothing?!?
    2007-03-16 23:14:00
The geek in me is grinning from ear to ear after reading this:Bugs Make Dress Smell Like Old WineHere's a brief excerpt:Australian researchers have combined art and science to make dresses from fermented fabric, using bacteria to 'grow' slimy dresses from wine and beer."We're looking at [the dresses] to provoke some discussion about future fashions, about the possibility of other material we can use instead of our normal cottons and silks," says Gary Cass, who works on the Micro'be' project at the University of Western Australia.Cass is a laboratory technician at the university who, among other things, writes science fiction. He says he was inspired to grow the dresses when he was working in a vineyard many years ago.He noticed that when oxygen got into the vats and turned the wine into vinegar, a slimy, rubbery layer grew on top. This layer was cellulose, produced by acetobacter bacteria as a waste product when they convert wine into vinegar. To ferment fabrics, Cass and his collea...
