by Ed LapizFrom the Special issue of Light Touch Magazine, vol. 8 number 3, Copyright 2004, Glad Tidings PublicationFilipinos are Brown. Their color is in the center of human racial strains. This point is not an attempt at racism, but just for many Filipinos to realize that our color should not be a source of or reason for inferiority complex. While we pine for a fair complexion, the white people are religiously tanning themselves, whenever they could, under the sun or some artificial light, just...

    Letter To All Filipinos
    2008-03-02 23:06:00
by Gemma DimaculangansTo all Filipinos Everywhere:I used to think that corruption and criminality in the Philippines were caused by poverty. But recent events tell me this isn't true. It is one thing to see people turn into drug addicts, prostitutes, thieves and murderers because of hunger and poverty, but what excuse do these rich, educated people have that could possibly explain their bizarre behavior? And to think I was always so relieved when petty snatchers got caught and locked away in jai...

    Meeting a Lot of Filipinos
    2008-01-01 09:44:00
Here in Tokyo, you can test the resilience and value of Filipinos by the way of Bayahinan. Yes, Bayanihan is still active here. Here in Tokyo, people gather almost every month in form of organizations, friends, even party friends to celebrate Christmas and help each other. When I went last week to a party in Meguro, someone even gave me 500 yen worth of call cards, in a way of marketing, and a way to call my love ones back home. Most Filipinos have the same story of how hard it is for them for live here in Japan and sadly have met a lot of them. I met someone who even has no VISA, or what they call here BILOG, and on that day, lost his father (died), and I can see in his eyes that he wants to cry but he can't. It was so sad. I even heard he called his family in Taguig about confirming the transmittal of 20,000 yen to his family. So sad. He can't even celebrate Christmas and New Year here in Tokyo. There were other stories of success where people have earned a lot but yet, some of them lost their relationship ties with their love ones, amongst all, is because of temptations. Especially when you have a lot of money here, there are a lot of temptations.I have also met a colleague of mine way back from Makati where he lives in an ice-filled town and worked as a full-time mechanical engineer. I was glad I was able to meet him in Akihabara. Also many Filipinos are willing to help you here. Especially in my case, having no heater in the room, caused some of my friends to look for other friends who have heater. And luckily, I have on now. To my surprise, a Japanese gave it to me. Here, it is their constant habit to throw all the OLD things they have. If they move out to an another house or their appliances are already more than a year or two, they throw them out. But they would prefer giving it out to someone as the government charges them 1,000 yen for every electronic item they dispose as a disposal fee. It is really strict and they really love the environment. As to not l...

Response On Divisiveness & the Overseas Filipinos
    2007-07-06 18:00:00
Jose Ma. Montelibano emailed a response below on my "critique" of his article Sons and daughters quite intriguing and insightful. Fidel Umaga has Alimangong Bukid and Henry with his take on Filipino Ego as mere pretensions. While we may see different variations on our views on the issue raised there is a commonality that we can all explore especially the common good that was raised in the said...

On Divisiveness and the Overseas Filipinos
    2007-07-06 00:20:00
The article Sons and Daughters by Jose Ma. Montelibano in his Inquirer column Glimpses is almost accurate to a tee, good read for Overseas Filipinos. It has some minor points that he may have missed. I don’t blame him though for the slight inaccuracy since he wants to send a message to these fools’ errrr people that one of these days we may find the unattainable dream of “unity”. Overall I...
