The cast of characters that have been created to live within the paintings of Jeremy Fish are the major defining features of the artist’s work. “Once Upon a Time” demonstrates how the characters have taken on personalities and have evolved into a fully functioning, existing universe that is undeniably from the mind of Jeremy Fish. Salmon Sushi Roll - Fish Recipe
    2008-07-03 22:42:49
Before I start explaining this one I must admit that I am not a great fan of sushi. I love fish, but just can't stomach it sushi style. Fortunately you can use smoked salmon with this recipe and I have had no trouble with it. I can highly recommend it to all the sushi wary people out there! This is one of the simplest salmon roll sushi recipes out there and even I made it for my wife to test it before posting it. You will need some sticky rice (cook it with 25% more water), salmon (smoked it ok), soy sauce, wasabi, ginger and Saki. It takes virtually no time to make and the longest part of the preperation work is cooking the rice. How to make Salmon Sushi RollFortunately, for you and me, there is a great video I have found showing the process of making this recipe which is very easy to follow. It is supposedly a romantic dish, but I am not sure why, maybe it just sounds better that way! Enjoy!

    Bread and Fish
    2008-07-01 15:52:00
"They all ate and they were satisfied..." Mark 6:42. Five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish. This is my still life attempt on fish, given as a photo assignment last May. It took me more than two days to figure out how to interpret the topic. Finally, I decided it would be interesting if I can tell share the story of Jesus feeding 5000 people with just 2 pieces of fish and 5 loaves of bread in just one picture. I had to find a nice basket to place the bread and fish. The bread is actually sp

Three stories: water stories: dead zones, fish kills and toxic lakes
    2008-06-26 20:51:45
Lest we forget and think that global warming is our only environmental issue, three stories:Life may have been completely wiped out in the Sixmilewater and Ballymartin Rivers in Glengormley, NEWTOWN ABBEY, UK by a discharge of toxic chemicals from an as yet unknown source. More than 300 incidents of fish kill have been reported in the last five years. Someone's not doing good detective work! Newton Abbey Times. If you were a mining company in Canada with lots of toxic tailing to get rid of, and you wanted to get around laws prohibiting destruction of fish habitat, what would you do? How about getting the Canadian government to reclassify 16 pristine lakes as toxic dump sites? The lakes include prime wilderness fishing lakes from B.C. to Newfoundland. In northern B.C., Imperial Metals plans to enclose a remote watershed valley to hold tailings from a gold and copper mine. The valley lies in what the native Tahltan people call the "Sa

    One Fish, Two Fish
    2008-06-20 18:33:00
We missed Stephen's birthday during our honeymoon so we had to celebrate as soon as we got back. We ended up in my old high school neighborhood, at One Fish Two Fish One Fish Two Fish. Wow, does the area look different. The restaurant feels spacious, which is a rare pleasure in Manhattan when you're back is usually up against a strangers. Unlimited salad, 1 basket of garlic bread per table, and one side dish is included. They started out with a good impression.Sadly, the food did not impress but I'm not complaining to loudly because it was cheap and you get what you pay for. There was a wonderful aroma of garlic that we assume was coming from the garlic bread. Oddly, the bread tasted buttered, but not garlicky at all.Kasi ordered the Cheesy Garlic Bread too, which also did not taste like garlic. The red sauce was ok but the cheese and bread were amazingly uninteresting to me, and most know that I love melted cheese on bread with an obscene passion.Stephen's Clam Chowder was quite amusi

But if you eat salmon for its omega-3 then the salmon also has to eat the right things. For salmon farmers it is attractive to feed their salmon with vegetable fats, because they are convenient [...]

Fish recipe - Salmon Cakes (fish patties)
    2008-06-17 19:22:42
Salmon cakes (or patties as I call them) is one of my favorite go to recipes when I can't decide what I want for dinner. Salmon is tasty, very good for you and is readily available in most parts of the world. You can also replace the salmon in the dish with other similar fish which maked this a very versatile dish. The recipe I use for salmon cakes is a Creole recipe that is full of flavor and I found a great video showing the process. The chef in the video also makes his own mayonnaise, which isn't too hard and tastes fantastic. I know what I am having for dinner tonight! For this recipe you will need:3 cups of Salmon1/4 Veg Stock1/2 OnionRed Bell PepperGreen Bell PepperOrange Bell PepperCeleryLemonSesame SeedsBreadcrumbsRed Pepper FlakesCayenne PepperChilli PepperSaltPepperExtra Virgin Olive Oil

How to fillet a fish (with video)
    2008-06-10 23:45:26
I have been trying to find a really useful and good quality fish filleting video to show my readers for ages now and I had almost given up. This video is not fantastic quality, but is probably the most complete and easy method to fillet a fish that I could find on the Internet.Like the guy in the video suggests, if you are only going to be cooking the fillets (without skin) there is no reason to go through the less desirable processes of scaling, gutting or removing the gills. This makes this method much less icky for people who are new to filleting or are simply a little squeamish. All you will need to this method is some newspaper to keep the bench clean, a clean plate and a sharp (it must be sharp) filleting knife. If your filleting knife is a blunt and don't know how to sharpen it your local butcher will do it for you (if you ask nicely). How to fillet a fishThis method can be used for most types of fish.

Rumble: No fish today: Italian fishermen on strike.
    2008-06-08 10:36:56
Often, in weekends, I stroll along the port of Fiumicino near Rome, a base for the local fishermen. Today, there was something different: there was no activity by the fishing trawlers, they were on strike.Banners on the boat said in Italian (and strangely enough, also in Arabic): "High Fuel Prices Kill the Fishery", "High Fuel, On Strike" and "Fuel Prices Kill Us. Only Imported Fish Today."More posts on The Road about Rome.

Fishing Video - Mahi Mahi (dolpfin fish)
    2008-06-07 21:04:02
Mahi Mahi or dolphin fish are one of the most popular sportfish in the world and on light tackle provide one of the most spectacular fights of any fish. Unfortunately most people encounter these fish on heavy marlin tackle which diminishes their fighting qualities quite a bit. They are a pretty fish that are also spectacular eating. Mahi Mahi often school around FAD (Fish attracting devices) and are often found under floating objects like logs. They are usually taken on marlin type lures, but will take a wide variety of lures and bait. This is one of the best fishing videos I have found on youtube and there is over 20 minutes of fishing action. Enjoy!

100 Miles per Fish, South Devon
    2008-06-01 08:46:01
We had been looking forward to going sea fishing in South Devon since we booked the cottage this time last year. Alas - things we not to go as we'd hoped. We managed to find the local tackle shop which I'd found on the internet and initially they seemed very helpful, with all sorts of information on where to fish but in our eagerness to catch we were blinded by our own enthusiasm. The first place we tried was Beesands, a very steep slopping beach, we didn't know what state of tide to fish it or really what bait to use so we took everything... and caught 2 spider crabs in 4 hours! We tried all sorts of places but most of the rock marks we were pointed towards needed climbing gear or a helicopter to reach the water. One of the nicest places we fished was Prawl point but after being told the water was deep we were a gain disappointed to find casting out only landed your bait in very shallow water. Wendy did manage to catch a couple of small Wrasse but again, I had nothing.Another problem we

your ham is a fish, bao bao meow piao
    2008-05-28 18:53:00
Meow meow meow...I'm having a pretty good week, so I wore a feel good outfit, super supple leather skirt. It's very loud and the embellishments have an art deco feel to it so I figured I'd try to keep it around that era. I guess it worked, SpindleFingers said all that was needed was a pipe and smoke screen. This is the necklace I had in mind. From helloagain. I might not go back this week like I planned, methinks another sample sale beckons..... what d'you think? Either that, or shoe shopping (in which I am in dire need to do, seriously I live in these shoes.)What I like about this outfit is that it really mixes up rich/poor. I absolutely hate wearing all from one store (twitch, twitch) and all of these items were purchases at different point of life, different places, with different places in mind. But together, it fits .I'd make this post of more substance but I've got a few tests to study/freak out over so Ursula-Agnes, Dan, Jimbo and Bambi shall see you out. See ya.Edit: Detail shot

How to fish crankbaits (with video)
    2008-05-26 20:14:02
Crankbaits are right up there with the most popular lures for bass, but they also are very popular with many other saltwater and freshwater species. They are available in every color imaginable and designed to run at a certain depth, which means working your lure in the strike zone is made easier. Every serious angler should have a selection of shallow, medium and deep running crankbaits in their tackle box.A lot of anglers don't realize there is more to fishing crankbaits than tying one on the line, chucking it in and winding it back. Ideally you want to make sure your crankbait gets down to the bottom and "hops" over the structure, but they can also be used in free water when fish are holding at a known depth. When choosing the color don't get too obsessed and remember that action and retrieve make much more of a difference. Stick to natural colors found in the local baitfish populations and you will be fine.Fishing crankbaitsAs I am not an expert in this area so I found a couple of

    Fish Story
    2008-05-26 19:42:00
We went fishing again this afternoon at the pond, to end the long weekend. Natalie has quite a fish story to tell. How do you catch 2 fish at the same time with one worm, one hook, and one fishing pole?Natalie casted out her pole, waiting for the bobber to drop, and then it did! Natalie started reeling in her blue gill, when all of a sudden, an explosion in the water! All kinds of crazy stuff was going on. Long story short, Natalie caught a blue gill in the mouth of a huge bass. I didn't have my camera there tonight, but it certainly was entertaining! Fortunately for the blue gill, during the fight to land the bass, the gill escaped the mouth of the bass and was flung off her line. It was his lucky day! How that happened, I'm not sure because when I saw the bass mouth the blue gill was in the mouth sideways.....Wow, what a fish story!

Ah, the fine art of the “non-apology apology.” It’s a careful tight rope balancing act of flatly denying any rumors involving you while simultaneously addressing them compassionately, thereby reducing the perception that you’re hiding guiltily from the public eye. Behold, Rickey’s in depth analysis of Roger Clemens’ recent statement made to the Houston Chronicle:“I know that many people want to know what I have to say about the recent articles in the media.”Well no, not particularly, but Rickey’s been running low on blogging material lately, so sure Raj—let ‘er rip. What say you of the recent allegations of pederasty swirling around you?“Even though these articles contain many false accusations and mistakes, I need to say that I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry.”For those keeping score at home, that’s as close as Clemens ever comes to making an actual apology. And you know what? We should give Raj some credit for putting in the eff

How to make beer batter - fish recipe
    2008-04-18 20:49:20
I must admit I love fried seafood and one of my favorite batter recipes is beer batter. It has such a lovely flavor and creates a delicious crispy coating on almost anything you can think of frying. I have personally used it on everything from fish to zucchini fritters and friends always comment on it's flavor and crispiness (and it is a great way to get your kids to eat their veggies!).For this recipe you will need the following ingredients:Plain FlourGround Nut Oil (this can be substituted with other oils)BeerSalt and PepperSpices (optional)Seafood to batterThis recipe is very simple, but it makes great batter. You will probably find that it makes better batter than packet batter and contains much less salt than the packet variety, which is better for your health.I recommend experimenting with different foods to batter as you never know when you will find a gem of a battered dish that you had never thought of (a bit like my Zucchini fritters).Beer Batter RecipeIt is all explained in

One thing I just don’t understand about the UK is the fascination most Brits seem to have with preparing fish and chips in a way that makes the dish basically inedible.  Above you can see two versions of the classic take-away food - on the left is the UK variety, on the right, the Australian.  [...]

    Portable fish finder
    2008-04-08 21:17:55
Portable fish finder Portable fish finders are designed to do the same job as a regular fish finder with the added benefit of being portable. Choosing a portable fish finder In certain situations portable fish finders are preferable over fixed fish finders. Portable fish finders can be used from land based situations (like ice fishing), in hire boats and in any other situations where portability is required. Castable transducers – These portable fish finders are fantastic from shore as you can attach the transducer to your line and cast it to the area you will fish to assess depth and structure (as well as fish). This type of portable fish finder is also very useful from a boat and you can cast the transducer into snags and shallow areas to check out the area without moving the boat into position, which can scare the fish. Suction cup transducers – This type of portable fish finder is fantastic for people who fish out of hire boats. This works exactly as it sounds and th

Stop Eating Fish Oil! Omega-3 Fatty Acids Don't Help Prevent Crohn's Relapse
    2008-04-08 17:23:00
April 8, 2008 - Taking omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful for many things, but maybe not for preventing a relapse of Crohn's disease. Two related studies show that omega-3s are not effective in preventing inflammation associated with Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect anywhere along the digestive tract. With Crohn's, a patient may experience periods of remission and recurrence. Researchers looked at whether high doses of omega-3s worked as maintenance therapy in patients with Crohn's disease in remission. A total of 738 people participated in two studies. No significant differences were observed between the two treatment groups in either trial. In one study, 363 participants were assigned randomly to take either a daily omega-3 supplement or a placebo for 52 weeks. In the second study, 375 participants took the pills for 58 weeks. Researchers say the results in the first and second study were similar. Here are some of t

    How do fish smell
    2008-04-04 03:04:02
The title of this post could be taken two ways. I was temped to simply write BAD in big black letters, but April fools is long gone (thankfully), and fish don't really smell that bad.The sense of smell is extremely important to a fish. It gives them ability to smell out food and in some cases return to the correct breeding location years after leaving "home." The salmonoid family of fishes can detect a certain amino acid in quantities as little as 1 part per 8 billion, which is quite amazing really. This ability means that fish are just as easily put off by smells they are unfamiliar with. The can include the following sunscreen, motor oil and petrol. How do fish smellFish don't have nostrils like mammals, but have a very similar set of holes called nares which lead into a chamber full of sensory pads. The fish smells by moving water through this chamber and over the sensory pads and in general the faster the water moves through the better the sense of smell. Most fish need to keep swim

How to fly fish for steelhead
    2008-03-26 22:09:03
Steelhead, called ocean trout in my home of Australia, are simply ocean going Rainbow trout. The time spent at sea causes their color to become silvery and their red band to fade. They have been introduced into every continent on earth (excluding Antarctica) and present a challenge to anglers around the world. They are most commonly targeted on fly tackle and provide great sport and excellent eating. How to fly fish for steelheadSteelhead are a difficult fish to catch and that is what makes them so special. They can be hard to find, finicky at certain times and down right frustrating. There are many "steelhead anglers" who have actually never caught a steelhead, and this fact alone is a testament to their appeal. Even though I have been lucky enough to catch one or two on a trip to the southern parts of Australia I am, by no means, an expert on the topic. So I went about finding the best articles from the web for you to read.Steelhead ArticlesArticle 1Article 2Article 3 - This whole sit

    Walleye fish
    2008-03-25 17:04:00
Walleye : The fishWe can currently find Walleye mainly in Lake of the Wood on the border of Ontario, Minnesota, the Missouri River and home of of the walleye world record: Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee (walleye trophy of 25 pounds caught in 1960).Blue Walleye Do you know that by 1971, the real blue walleye was considered extinct? Some anglers might think that they had caught a blue walleye since then but they were not true blue walleye. Here is a good hint to validate if it's a true blue walleye: wrap your blue walleye in newspaper and the slim will come off and the newspaper will turn blue; it's not a true blue walleye!Walleye closest relative: the saugerThe closest relative to a walleye is the sauger, a fish often mistaken for the walleye. Here is a quick tip on how to compare a walleye with a sauger: saugers have a blackish overall body and on the dorsal fins, the sauger has dark blotches that the walleye does not have. The sauger will usually spawn later then the walleye, so

My Favorite Fish is Clown Fish (Finding Nemo)
    2008-03-21 10:25:00
As my husband and I went to the Epcot in Disney, one place that we did went too was one of the aquarium they have which full of clown fish and I am glad I took one which is clear. It is hard to take a pic of them when they keep moving and it took for me for a while to get a good picture of it and the good thing is that I am using a digital camera if any pictures I do not like I can delete it. Speaking of clown fish, it reminds me when my husband and I doing snorkeling in Palawan, Philippines and I saw that kind of fish in there when I see them makes me so happy (lol), it is just an amazing fish and imagine it is with stripe and orange color and that my husband’s favorite color too. Perhaps, since the movie of Finding Nemo released and I watched it I started liking the clown fish and now it is my favorite fish and maybe when we have a tank we might have a clown fish but salt water fish easily die than fresh water fish though and we will find out later if we are going to have clown fi

1/2 cup vegetable oil3/4 cup onion -- chopped3/4 cup catsup3/4 cup water1/3 cup lemon juice3 tablespoon sugar3 tablespoon worcestershire sauce2 tablespoon prepared mustard2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon pepperSaute onion in oil in medium heavy saucepan over medium-high heat until tender. Combine with all ingredients and simmer 10 - 15 mins. Using any mild fish, fileted or whole, place fish in wire basket that will hold fish firmly in place or put a wire mesh on your grill. Brush fish with seafood sauce occasionally until fish is flaky. This sauce is also excellent on shrimp. Oh, and if you're not happy with the freshness of your fish, soak it in milk for a few hours. It takes the "fishy" smell out of the fish.

    How do fish reproduce
    2008-03-20 20:07:43
For some time I have been thinking of writing a how do fish post a week, but have never really gotten around to it. I plan to cover a range of topics including how do fish reproduce (todays topic), hear, smell and many more. If you like (or hate) the idea feel free to leave a comment. How do fish reproduceWhile there are exceptions to the rule most fish reproduce in a similar fashion. In over 97% of fish species the eggs develop outside the mothers body. The male fish then fertilizes these eggs in the open water and they are left to hatch. The newly-hatched young are called larvae. Usually they are poorly formed and carry a large yolk sac, which they use for food. At this stage they will look very different from the adult fish and are susceptible to predators. This period lasts for a few weeks during which the larvae grow and change their appearence and structure to resemble a juvenile fish. At this stage the fish will swich from feeding on the yolk sac to feeding on zooplankton prey.In

    How to fish a river
    2008-03-19 21:22:09
It would be hard to find something more relaxing than walking along, in or sitting on the bank of a river casting a fly, lure or bait. While all rivers require slightly different fishing techniques there are many techniques that will remain the same. How to fish a riverWhenever you are fishing it pays to think like a fish and this is no different when fishing a river. Remember that the food will be flowing past the fish very quickly and they will not have much time to decide whether to eat it or not. Whether you are fishing with bait, lure or fly remember to make your presentations look as close as possible to the natural food sources in the river. Sometimes fish will prospect with their mouth (they don't have hands after all) eating everything that flows past, they swallow the food and spit out the rest. When the fish are in this mood you will need to be aware of any indications of a bite and strike early. When the fish are not feeding you can try to annoy them into biting with repetit

    How to fish swimbaits
    2008-03-12 08:54:32
Fishing for bass, and other species, with swimbaits is becoming increasingly popular. Fishing with large swimbaits has become one of the most popular methods of catching very big aggressive bass especially during the spawning season.Choosing a swimbaitSwimbaits vary greatly is sizes, colors and design. You can find tiny shad, crappie, and bluegill imitations to huge 12" trout swimbaits that will run very deep. Just like the fly fishing saying it is best to "match the hatch" and choose a swimbait that resembles what the bass are feeding on at the time. For really big bass during spawning try a large trout swimbait. When to fish swimbaits?Simbaits can be fish all throughout the year with some success, but they seem to be very popular between January and May in the pre and post spawn. How to fish swimbaits?Fish swimbaits around structure and when during spawning near spawning areas. Fish finders for kayaks
    2008-03-09 21:33:19
Fishing from kayaks is becoming quite a popular pastime. Even where I live I have seen people in ocean going kayaks going out to the close inshore reefs. That might not seem like such a big thing, but I live in an area famous for big crocodile attacks. Anyway onto todays topic...Fish finders for kayaksFish finders for kayaks are really not much different than fish finders for boats. The main difference being that space is a premium and you will probably want a slimmer receiving and sending unit. Any portable fish finder will work as well as any streamlined boat model. However, make sure the model you purchase is usable with a portable re-chargeable battery.Choosing a fish finder for your kayakSelect a model with as many pixels as possible for better definition. Spending a few extra dollars in this area can make a lot of difference. A cone angle of 20 degrees will be perfectly adequate. The power of the fishfinder is not really a concern when fishing from a kayak unless you are planning

    Angler fish facts
    2008-03-07 22:27:28
I first saw an angler fish in the Iron Chef "angler fish battle" or was it Finding Nemo - I can't remember now, but it is one weird looking fish. However, angler fish are one of those weird creatures that seem to capture everyones imagination. It's weird looking, a little scary and apparently the liver is the only part worth eating (according to the Japanese anyway).Angler fish factsThe angler fish is so named because of its strange method of catching prey. They dangle and wiggle a filament attached to their head (see the angler fish pictures below) to look like prey and attract small fish. When these fish get close enough the angler fish swallows them whole. Their jaws are actually controlled by an automatic reflex when their is contact with their tentacle.Angler fish are deep sea fish by nature and are found worldwide. There are many different species of angler fish - some are pelagic, while others remain on the bottom of the ocean floor. In Japan the liver of the angler fish is worth

    How do fish finders work
    2008-03-06 18:18:13
If you are a regular reader of my blog you will have noticed I have been answering some of the questions I get asked via email the last few weeks and this post is no different. I must get asked about this at least once a week so I thought it was time to tackle the subject of how fish finders work. How do fish finders workA fishfinder (also called a depth finder or sounder) is made up of two parts that work together seamlessly. The receiving unit processes the signal and interprets the data which it displays on an LCD screen. The sending unit, called the transducer, sends the sonar signal to the bottom and when it receives the signal back it sends this signal to the computer for interpretation and display. The underwater partA fish finder sends an acoustic pulse directly downwards to the seabed and records the returned echo. The sound pulse is generated by the transducer that emits an acoustic pulse and then “listens” for the return signal. The time for the signal to return is recorde

    Tuna fish and mercury
    2008-02-24 20:43:08
In recent times there has been some controversy about fish and mercury and the often confusing news reports do not help to clear up matters. Currently there are warnings that have been released for the bigger predatory pelagic fish that seem to have a mercury accumulation problem. This happens because these bigger fish eat many smaller fish with trace amounts of mercury and the mercury level accumulates in the bigger fish. The fish that carry some level of risk include (but are not limited to):SharkSwordfish King MackerelTilefishSome tunas (bigeye, ahi, yellowfin and canned albacore) other tunas are safe in moderate amounts.MarlinOrange RoughyIt is important to remember that all fish contains levels of mercury and fish consumption (particularly when pregnant should be monitored). Low levels of fish consumption should not be a problem. What about tuna?Tuna can be classified as a medium to high risk fish and consumption should be monitored.
