    Giant Catfish - Fishing Video
    2008-07-23 18:43:15
The catfish we get here in Australia can get big, but nothing like the sizes of the giant catfish caught in other locations around the world. Our catfish even have poisonous spines that can kill you which means that Australians like catching catfish about as much as catching a cold. However, since writing this blog, I have come to realize that catfish are a prized catch in certain parts of the world and if you are in any doubt as to why then just watch the fight from the catfish in the video!I have written about catfish before such as the biggest catfish ever caught, catfish noodling video and night fishing for catfish as well as the strange story of the catfish that swallowed the basketball. As this is my fifth catfish post I decided to try and find a really interesting video of a giant catfish to mark the occasion. This video of a guy catching an awesome giant catfish and is well worth a watch. This huge fish puts up a strong fight (take a look at the bend in that rod) and it was rea

    Grinner Knot - Fishing Knots
    2008-07-22 18:01:43
The grinner knot is not a knot I am very familiar with although I use variations of this knot for attaching braided lines to a swivel. It is reputedly one of the best ways to attach all the different line types (monofilament, fluorocarbon and braid) to a swivel or hook and in some cases lures. This makes it a very versatile knot and coupled with the knot strength (which is very high) the knot is certainly one all anglers should have in their arsenal. This knot is fairly easy to tie and after a couple of practice knots it became quite easy to tie quickly. I also found that the knot was surprisingly strong as when I got snagged it was very difficult to break! The knot is one of the most secure fishing knots I have used and it just does not slip. It is certainly worth a try.

    Finding cool fishing games
    2008-07-20 20:21:20
When the weather turns poor, its raining (hailing and snowing included), the boat is in the shop or other commitments keep you away from the water, fishing games can be a great way to pass the time. Fortunately the fishing game enthusiast is blessed with a number of games to choose from these days on a variety of platforms. The Playstation, Nintendo Wii and Xbox all have some fantastic fishing games that can be great fun to play. However, for choice and variety you cannot really go past the humble PC when looking for a fun fishing game.I was always a fan of the bassmasters classic fishing games and I have spent countless hours wiling away the windy days with these games. There are also some great free options available and a quick search of google can turn up some real gems that are far too addictive for their own good. Most of the games are centered around bass fishing, but there have been other ones produced catering for saltwater sportfishing species like marlin and sailfish. While t

    Black Drum Fishing Video
    2008-07-17 18:45:52
The black drum is very similar to one of the famous fish we catch where I come from (Australia for the new readers out there) so I have a bit of a connection with these great fish. They fight hard, grow big and taste great (in the smaller sizes) so it is little wonder they have a small, but dedicated following. The black drum gets its name from the weird sound it can produce and from its black color (obviously). They are capable of producing tones to 501 khz as a mating call.World record black drumThe biggest black drum ever caught was recorded at a whopping 113lbs (51kg for the metric folk out there). I can only imagine the fight that a fish that big would produce!Black drum fishing videoThis is certainly an amateur video and it is quite short, but it certainly captures the charm of these wonderful fish. Enjoy.

    Funny fishing quotes
    2008-07-14 21:51:38
I thought I would take a break from the usual "instructional" type posts and try something a little bit different and hopefully fun! Enjoy these funny fishing quotes:"The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad." - A.K. Best"My Biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it." - Koos Brandt"Today she met me at the door, said I would have to choose, if I picked that fishing pole today, she'd be packing all her things and she'd be gone by noon....well I'm gonna miss her!" - Brad Paisley"Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it." - Ed Zern"Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. Removing fishing line from your reel
    2008-07-10 05:51:47
As I was getting the boat ready for tomorrows fishing trip with my old man I spent quite a bit of time replacing old line on one of our many rods. Removing fishing line from the reel is one of my least favorite activities. As I was doing it today I spent some time thinking that there must be a better way and when I got back to my place decided to do a google search. I found a great little video of a product that fits into your drill and removes the old line in seconds. It looks like it would be fairly easy to make something similar for yourself with an old bait casting reel and a drill attachment. I know that there are some fancy electronic line removers that tackle shops use, but this method would be cheap, fairly easy to make and be very easy to use.If you do watch the video and/or have any grand ideas feel free to drop me a comment and tell me all about it.(sorry for the poor video quality)

    Heli Fishing (Helicopter Fishing)
    2008-07-08 22:01:15
Traditionally heli fishing is about using a helicopter to get to remote locations that not many people fish. People who have undertaken this type of fishing tell stories of some of the best fishing and remote locations on the planet. Some heli fishing operations are set up exclusively for fishing, but many anglers simply hire a helicopter and pilot for the day. The second option will only work if you know exactly where you want to fish as only the specialist heli fishing operations will take you to the hot spots they have already found.Advantages of helicopter fishingFish almost untouched locations.Get to remote locations in comfort.Superb views from the helicopter.Disadvantages of helicopter fishing Cost - it can be very expensive (get a group of mates together and split the cost!).Generally heli fishing charters are shorter than a mothership based charter. If cost is really a problem for you then you should check out this video below. It is heli fishing with a difference and is absolu

Loop Knot (Anglers Loop) - Fishing Knots
    2008-07-06 03:44:56
My wife decided it would be a good day to have a walk along the beach and a bit of a fish and then some breakfast (I wasn't going to argue). As I was setting up for tomorrows fishing trip I was experimenting with a new rig and remembered a great knot for attaching lures which I thought I would share with my readers. The loop knot or "anglers loop" is one of the most popular methods of attaching a lure to a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. It is extremely popular because it allows the lure to swing freely which means the lure can swim with a more natural action. A lure with a quality action often leads to more bites and more fish! How to tie a loop knotThe loop knot is quite simple to tie with a bit of practice and is absolutely essential if you are an avid user of lures. It is a sufficiently strong knot and can be tied in both light and heavy line strengths. This instructional video shows the process very clearly.

The Dropper Loop - Fishing Knots and Rigs
    2008-06-29 04:20:20
The dropper loop is probably my most used fishing knot (I suppose it is more that a loop than a knot). Before I head out on the water I have usually tied at least ten of these loops. The dropper loop is used above a sinker to attach a hook and this type of rig is perfect for bottom fishing. Where I come from this is called the paternoster rig and is widely accepted as one of the best reef fishing rigs available. The dropper loop knot is fairly easy to tie after a bit of practice. I personally prefer to tie a twisted dropper loop as I find that the loops don't tangle with the main line as easily as the hooks sit away from the leader. This loop works well in both monofilament and fluorocarbon leader materials. How to tie a dropper loopThe first video shows a regular dropper loop and the second demonstrates a twisted dropper loop. I would advice to test both loops out and see which works best for you.

    Fewer Canadians fishing for recreation
    2008-06-25 10:25:00
Statistics Canada says fewer people are fishing for fun these days, which is good news for the fish, at least. The agency says 3.2 million adults bought fishing licences in Canada in 2005, down 25 per cent from the number who hit the water in 1995. Overall, it says, recreational fishermen are getting older - the average age is 48 for men and 44 for women. Anglers tend to fish for the same

    Blood Knot - Fishing Knots
    2008-06-22 23:31:09
The blood knot is probably the most famous fishing knot and is also called the clinch knot in various parts of the world. It is probably one of the first knots most anglers learn and some people may even remember their grandpa teaching it to them like I do.The blood knot is popular as it is easy to tie, can be used in many different types of line and is sufficiently strong for most fishing situations. It can also be tied in the dark making it quite popular amongst night anglers. This knot also comes in a couple of improved forms, which I have posted instructions to before, including the:locked blood knotimproved clinch knotDespite the fact that many people eventually graduate to more advanced knots the blood knot is an important knot to have in your knot tying arsenal. How to tie a blood knotThis is a great little animated video showing the process of correctly tying a blood knot. King Salmon fishing video
    2008-06-19 18:52:26
The king salmon is a pacific ocean salmon that comes under many other names including chinook salmon, black salmon, tyee salmon, just to name a few. They have a large growth potential and can reach the up to 1.5 meters (58 inches) and 130 pounds (59kg), but most anglers encounter fish up to 50 pounds. King salmon have the strange distinction of dying after breeding, which was highlighted in an episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe.King salmon are a popular angling target as they fight well and large fish are often encountered. They are also regarded as a top eating fish and the flesh is high in omega 3 which is an essential fatty acid linked with many health benefits. You should always check your local regulations as some chinook salmon populations are listed as endangered.Enjoy this video of a big King Salmon caught in Alaska

Figure Eight Knot - Fishing Knots (with video)
    2008-06-15 20:27:10
The figure eight knot is one of the easiest fishing knots to tie and can be used for terminal tackle or as a very good stopper knot. It is generally used at night and in low light conditions because it is very easy to tie. It is sufficiently strong for some situations, but is certainly one of the weaker connection knots used today. A popular way to strengthen the knot is to double the line to tie this knot. However, this knot is still not recommended for tackling big fish. This is also a popular rock climbing/boating knot that provides a strong connection and can be tied in a matter of seconds. How to tie a figure eight knot

    Friday Fishing Report #2
    2008-06-15 04:20:21
This post took quite a while to come together as I have unfortunately had one of those weekends. A stomach bug and a blocked drainage system have kept me very busy.I managed to get out for a fish on Friday as planned and took a couple of visitors out fishing with my old man who also had the day off. We hit the water fairly early and lost a couple of big fish (with big teeth) within about 10 minutes of anchoring on one of our favorite wrecks. With only a slow stream of little fish coming over the side and the wind picking up we moved to a sheltered reef where I managed to land a couple of nice fish. The wind was really picking up by then and the visitors had to be on the road so we called it a day. Unfortunately our boat ramp is quite exposed and we had a really difficult time retrieving the boat and my poor weekend started there.Got a good fishing story? Please leave a comment.

Funny adult jokes-The price of fishing
    2008-06-12 02:09:01
Four married guys go fishing. After an hour, the following conversation took place:First guy: "You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend."Second guy: "That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool."Third guy: "Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her."They continue to fish when they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word. So they asked him. "You haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. What's the deal?"Fourth guy: "I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a nudge and said, "Fishing or Sex" ..and she said, "Wear sun-block."

Fishing and Finding the Walleye: From the Lake to the Frying Pan
    2008-06-09 22:31:33
Walleye are some of the most sought after (and tasty) fish in North America. But these fish aren’t the easiest prey in the lake to catch. These elusive guys like to lurk in the dark recesses of murky water so it takes a little knowledge and ingenuity to land these tasty game fish. Here are a few tips to increase your chances of bagging dinner on your next walleye expedition: Know Your Walleye Facts – It’s trite but true; knowledge is power! Because a walleye’s sight is so well adjusted to turbid water, they can only see in shades of red and green. That little tidbit should tell you that any lure you pick should be one of those two colors. Talk To The Local Pros – When you go to your local fishing store, ask what lures work best for walleye in your area. There’s no use buying plastic worms if your local quarry only hit spoons and jigs. They’ll also be able to help you with the best fishing knots to use to tie your lures. Ge

Fishing Video - Mahi Mahi (dolpfin fish)
    2008-06-07 21:04:02
Mahi Mahi or dolphin fish are one of the most popular sportfish in the world and on light tackle provide one of the most spectacular fights of any fish. Unfortunately most people encounter these fish on heavy marlin tackle which diminishes their fighting qualities quite a bit. They are a pretty fish that are also spectacular eating. Mahi Mahi often school around FAD (Fish attracting devices) and are often found under floating objects like logs. They are usually taken on marlin type lures, but will take a wide variety of lures and bait. This is one of the best fishing videos I have found on youtube and there is over 20 minutes of fishing action. Enjoy!

How to catch sharks (shark fishing)
    2008-06-03 04:11:53
As I have previously posted, shark fishing is not really my thing. Where I live sharks are considered something of a pain when reef fishing, but I understand that sharks are a very popular targets in other parts of the country and indeed the world.Catching sharksThe key to catching sharks can be found in one word chum (also called berley or ground bait) and lots of it. Sharks have relatively poor eyesight, but one of the best senses of smell of any animal. A large majority of a sharks brain is dedicated to smell and research suggests sharks can find food by smell alone from kilometers away. Some popular forms of chum for shark fishing is tuna chunks, small baitfish, tuna oil, chicken. Some people blend/mince all their fish frames up into old milk cartons and freeze the mixture to use. Best results are usually found when an angler creates a chum slick, which usually includes mixtures of fish oil and fish bits added to the slick in a consistent manner. Chum can directly be thrown into th

    Friday Fishing Report
    2008-06-01 00:19:01
Sorry this report took so long. I have had one of those weekends and a nasty stomach bug has kept me down for a couple of days (it wasn't from the fish I caught and ate fortunately). It was cold when dad and I headed out before the sun poked its head above the horizon. When I say cold I mean it was about 20 degrees (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit for the Americans reading this), but I am from the tropics after all and I was cold! We haven't had much luck lately and the weather report was not favorable so I hadn't prepared quite as well as I usually would. I usually make up about 5 or 6 spare leaders in case we get bitten off, snagged or reefed by a big fish and keep them in a snap lock bag.First up we fished a shallow water wreck and the fish were on straight away. I hooked a big fish only to have it eaten on the way up by a monster barracuda that probably could have swallowed me whole. We used the half fish for cut baits and before they hit the bottom dad hooked and subsequently lost a ma

Seaguar Knot - Fluorocarbon knots for fishing
    2008-05-28 04:52:17
Fluorocarbon is one of the latest fishing fashions, but apart from simply being in fashion, it is also a fantastic innovative product. If you are unfamiliar fluorocarbon it is a leader material that is basically invisible in water meaning fish feel more comfortable to bite.I was a little skeptical when I switched to fluorocarbon about a year ago, but have been pleasantly surprised by the bite rate, abrasion resistance and durability. The one downside to the product is susceptibility to friction and this problem can be avoided by tying really good knots and lubricating the knots well. One of the best knots for fluorocarbon is the Seaguar knot designed specifically for joining this type of line to the mainline. How to tie the Seaguar KnotTo make it easy I found a video!

    Women anglers (My Fishing Report)
    2008-05-24 00:47:01
I went for a quick fish this morning before breakfast with my wife. We didn't take the boat out and instead fished off the bank, but still caught quite a few fish. Well I actually should say my wife caught most of the fish. Fortunately I am just happy being there and I actually enjoy seeing people catch and release fish. I don't get grumpy when I can't catch them, which is a good thing because my wife almost always kicks my butt in the catch count. This leads me to todays question - Does your wife/partner/sister go fishing with you? and do they often out fish you when they do? If you are a woman angler do you often outfish your male fishing companions?I have heard stories of pheromones, sensitive hands and even more patience making women better anglers and I would love to hear from all the anglers out there (including the women) about this topic - feel free to leave a comment. This topic is light hearted and not meant to be offensive.

    Alligator attacking a fishing lure
    2008-05-22 20:16:40
Where I live we have monster crocodiles that strike fear into the hearts of small boat owners everywhere. They are so aggressive they have been known to chomp into boat props and headbutt small boats. Most places are off limits to swimming (except the swimming pools) because these crocs can (and have) taken people from the water. Even standing on the bank of the rivers in not recommended. So why am I telling you all this...? Well I found this great video on youtube this morning of a gator attacking a fishing lure and wanted to share it with you. It really shows just how aggressive these animals can be even when they can clearly see people. I don't condone teasing an alligator or crocodile - it is always best to move away from the area when an aggressive animal is lurking.

    Let's Go Fishing
    2008-05-19 19:58:00
Fishing as a hobby appeals to groups of all ages. You can fish for sport, hobby or you can catch fish to eat. But The best part of fishing is that it is a chance to enjoy the out-doors. Beside you can learn about patience, relaxing, and how to enjoy nature, it is also a great way to spend time with family or friends (depend on who you are going with).Beautiful background of Alam Endah Fishpond - PadalarangA good place to start fishing is in small lakes or ponds. Even tho I prefer to fish on the sea. When I was kid, fishing was something that interested me as long not using worm as the bait :p My family lived across the sea so there was a chance to go fishing with my sister and friends even tho mostly just on the sea side wall. We did catch lots of fishes :p but it didn't makes me a pro fishing lol. By the way, It takes lots of practice to become good at casting. Fishing Knots: World's Fair Knot

The world's fair knot was created by Gary Martin and was selected by a panel of professionals as the best knot out of 498 entries in the great knot search at the 1982 world fair. This fishing knot is quick to tie, does not slip and is very strong. These features make the world's fair knot a very versatile and popular knot with many anglers. Most anglers use this knot with monofilament lines although, because it is well known for a lack of slipping, may also be tied in braided lines in some situations. How to tie the world's fair knotWhile this knot is fairly simple to tie it does take a some practice to perfect.

    Fishing Knots: King Sling Knot
    2008-05-14 20:30:26
During my last serious fishing trip I decided to try a new knot recommended to me by a good fishing friend. I had been whining to him about my crank bait (lures to me) knots and he suggested I try the king sling knot. The king sling knot is an easy knot to tie and offers a decent amount of strength. However, its real benefit is that it allows crank baits to work freely and look a whole lot more lifelike. In my tests I found that while working the lure it looked a lot more natural and the action was quite enticing to the fish. The strike to hook up rate was good and I was quite impressed with the knot. How to tie the king sling knotclick to enlarge

It's official: Salmon fishing season is a bust
    2008-05-10 16:24:00
MONTEREY - Wildlife regulators on Friday canceled most of the salmon fishing season in the Central Valley, a potential $20 million hit for the state's already struggling economy. The unprecedented restrictions make it illegal to fish for salmon with one exception: a stretch of the Sacramento River from north of Woodland to Red Bluff, and only in November and December.Even then, limits will be strict: just one fish per person per day. A normal season would see up to six months of fishing with two fish per day.

    Fishing Knots: Berkley Braid Knot
    2008-05-08 06:46:22
For quite some time now I have had emails from readers asking which knot I thought was the absolute best for braid fishing lines like fireline, finns, suffix etc. For years now I have personally used an improved clinch knot with increased wraps on braided lines and have not had many problems. Early this year, for some reason, I went through a period of mysterious knot failures and decided to test a new braid knot to see if it made any difference. The knot I tested was the Berkley Braid Knot. The Berkley Braid Knot is a knot that has been tested (and I guess invented) by the research and development team at Berkley. It is tied by doubling the braid and this has increased knot strength in braided lines. Fortunately it is very simple to tie and is basically a clinch knot tied in the doubled line (see instructions below). I have been quite happy with the performance of the knot and I am sticking with it for now.(Click to enlarge)

Fishing Knots: Turle Knot (and double turle knot)
    2008-05-04 06:16:15
The turle knot is a little known snare knot used to attach hooks to a leader. It is one of the most simple knots to tie, but is unfortunately quite a weak knot and is not usually recommended unless targeting very small fish. However, the strength of the knot can be significantly improved by tying the double turle knot, which I will also explain below.Turle knot1. Pass the line through the eye of the hook and make a simple loop.2. Carry the end of the line on to make a Simple Overhand Knot upon the loop and pass the loop over the hook3. Tighten into shapeDouble Turle KnotPass the line through and make two simple loops. Then make a Simple Overhand Knot around both loops. Pass these loops over the hook. Tighten the knot.

Catfish seem to be on my mind lately (see the biggest catfish ever caught post) and this post is no different.Night fishing for catfishCatfish were once strictly a night time angling target exclusively, but day time fishing has become a much more popular method for catching these great fish. However, there are many reasons to go night fishing including; The water to too clear. It is too hot during the day.Too many anglers and "pleasure craft" on the water during the day.Catfish (and other fish for that matter) will often be more willing to feed at night. The bigger catfish are consistently caught at nighttime! To catch catfish at night try following the tips below;Try to be quiet catfish don’t have the best vision, but they are sensitive to noise.Try a big smelly bait to give the catfish the best chance of finding your bait - try shad, fresh fish fillets, chicken livers even hot dogs will work.Use a rig with the hook on the bottom (this is where the catfish are looking for food).Try not

    Out-of-This-World Fishing
    2008-04-29 23:56:00
What lurked in the depths, now is going to haunt your boat.Be careful what you hook up. Aside from picking some vicious industrial garbage, you can bring to the surface some strange and unmentionable things. Most fishermen will happily brag about an extraordinary big fish (and we'll show plenty of those in this article). But sometimes the catch is so bizarre, that they'd rather try to forget it over a drink or two."Larger than life" (but hopefully still real) catchesWe all know that the size of our largest catch is only limited to how wide we can stretch our arms, and how gullible your friends are. A picture would usually prove your story, if you don't mind occasional "this is Photoshop... I can tell by the pixels" comments:(a whale shark, not that big either)Catfish the size of a small car? Well, almost."The World's Largest Catfish" catch happened in Thailand:(more info - that is a 646-pound Mekong giant catfish)(photo by Suthep Kritsanavarin)This is, by the way, officially the larges

    Fishing Knots: Thumb Knot
    2008-04-28 01:59:22
The thumb knot is one of my favorite knots and with practice is very quick and easy to tie. It is a popular knot for attaching hooks, swivels and rings to very heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line. The knot tightens down very well and provides a strong connection.note - this knot should not be confused with the overhand knot, which is also called the thumb knot in rope tying circlesIt will take some practice to get this knot correctClick to enlarge1. Thread your hook with the lineand make a loop so that the hookis suspended from the loop.2. Wrapping your left thumband loop with the tag three times.3. Push the tag back under those three wraps.4. Hold both ends and ease the wraps off your thumb, one at a time, in sequence.5. Close the knot by exerting pressureon the loop against the tag.

    Bass night fishing
    2008-04-23 04:21:43
Many people do not understand that most fish activity takes place under the cover of darkness. There is research that suggests that over 90% of fish species feed almost exclusively at night. This means that night fishing can be a very productive method of catching fish.During the day fish are not only less active, but can be spooked by boat noise and anglers making noise above the surface. They can also see your boat and lure presentation much clearer and there is the added risk of rejection because of these factors. Under the cover of darkness, fish feel more confident when feeding and cannot see quite as well as usual.Night Fishing TipsWhen night fishing for bass follow these few tips to successUse dark colored lures (color vision fades in darkness)Try fishing around areas of light like docks.Try a lure that makes some noise or a surface lure that "bloops"Night Fishing For BassThese two videos share some great ideas for night fishing for bass and are well worth watching - the first o

Fishing Knots: Flemish Eye Knot (wire knot)
    2008-04-22 03:18:41
Sometimes fishing with a wire trace in unavoidable, especially when targeting fish with razor sharp teeth. Obviously wire leader requires different knots than regular fishing line and one of the most popular knots is the Flemish eye knot. The Flemish eye knot is one of the most popular methods for attaching hooks, rings and swivels to a wire trace, but it can also be used for very heavy monofilament that can be difficult to tie. It is highly regarded for use with multi strand wire because it allows a degree of looseness which removes the pressure from the crimped sleeve. How to tie a Flemish eye knotnote: a a crimping tool is needed for this knot

A Spanish navy frigate has been diverted to the scene of the hijacking. The attack comes just a week after a luxury French yacht with 30 crew on board was released by Somali pirates following payment of a £1m ransom. Fishing Knots: Cat's Paw Knot (offshore swivel knot)
    2008-04-17 04:49:48
The cat's paw knot, also called an offshore swivel knot, is used to attach a swivel or ring to a double line with a complete loop (like the bimini twist knot). It is widely accepted as the best knot for this application and is an extremely strong and effective knot that resists slipping. It is usually tied in monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing lines and can be tied in many different line strengths. Blonde jokes-Ice fishing
    2008-04-15 12:15:00
A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject and, finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice. After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed,"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."Startled, the blonde moved farther down the ice, poured a thermos of Cappuccino and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens The voice bellowed,"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."The blonde, now worried, moved clear down to the opposite end of the Ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more,"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."She stopped, looked skyward, and asked,"IS THAT YOU, LORD?"The voice replied,"NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK."

    Fishing Knots: Centauri Knot

I am always going on about taking the time to learn good quality fishing knots. I believe learning to tie solid knots will improve your fishing almost more than any other factor and I wish someone had told me the importance of great knots earlier in my fishing life (I leaned the hard way!)The Centauri knot is another high quality, strong and easy to tie knot that every angler should know. It is an extremely versatile knot and can be tied in a wide range of line strengths, line types (including braid with increased wraps) and diameters while retaining up to 90% of the breaking strain. This knot is highly regarded because it produces very little friction and does not distort the line. How to tie a Centauri knotFollow this animated video to guide you.Remember to lubricate the line with saliva before tightening.

    My holiday fishing report
    2008-04-12 20:01:03
My regular readers would have noticed that I haven't made a post for a couple of days and I have been on a fishing holiday with my old man and my wife. We rented a cabin on a local lake and fished right from our front door. I haven't had much luck in the freshwater before and really only expected a relaxing trip with a couple of fish. Relaxing wasn't quite the word I would use as the fishing went off with a bang. Over 5 days we caught about 20 great fish and over 7 species in total. I managed my very first tarpon (albeit the smaller pacific version) and I now understand why people pay tens of thousands of dollars to visit South America to catch these fish! We caught 12 big Saratoga, which are a prehistoric looking fish found in the northern parts of Australia and give a spectacular leaping fight. I didn't manage to capture any video this trip, but here are some pictures of the trip (I am having trouble uploading - check back soon):

    Tuna fishing video
    2008-04-05 19:23:28
Tuna are a great fish and can be a tough adversary on the right gear. They are known for their stubborn fight and circling motion under the boat. Unfortunately people also like eating tuna and the stocks right around the world have dwindled from the overfishing that has taken place. There are far less places to tangle with a big tuna than there were years ago, but locations where big tuna are caught can still be found. New Zealand is one of these places and is where this video comes from. We Aussies might think they are a bit mad at times, but you have to admire them for their excitement and passion for what they are doing! There is some insane action on this video and is worth a watch!Follow the link to youtube to see the actionhttp://au.youtube.com/watch?v=PobGQMZZpoA

Detailed list of 2008 fishing licenses cost for all states and provincesWith the spring arrival, it's now time to renew our fishing license. I've been buying Quebec fishing licenses for the last 20 years an occasionally I had to buy Ontario's fishing license. Are we all paying the same price for a fishing license in North America? I've decided to take some time to gather all together the price of a fishing license for each state and province. There are different types of fishing licenses: resident, non-resident, one-day, 7 days or senior. For the benefice of this article, we will compare annual resident fishing licenses cost.Alabama annual freshwater fishing license : 12.00$Alaska sport fishing license : 24.00$Arizona general fishing license, Class A : 23.50$Arkansas fisheries conservation license + trout permit: 15.50$California sport fishing : 38.85$Colorado annual fishing license : 26.00$Connecticut inland fishing license : 20.00$Delaware fishing license : 8.00$District of Col

    Kayak fishing video (record tuna)
    2008-04-03 10:07:27
I have always admired people who fish from kayaks. This is probably because where I live big aggressive crocodiles are common and they would have no problem tipping over a kayak to eat the occupant! Fortunately big crocodiles aren't present all over the world and there is plenty of good kayaking waters ripe for the fishing.I found this great little video on youtube today of a guy catching a tuna from a kayak, which just so happens to be a 70 pound kayak fishing record tuna! It is a well presented video and if you are into kayak fishing or big tuna then it is well worth watching!

I have posted lots about fishing knots before, but I have never really put all of the information together in one spot for convenience. Hopefully this post will be of use to people looking for the basic fishing knots that every angler should know.Tying good quality fishing knots is a very important part of fishing. There is nothing worse than losing a fish of a lifetime only to find your knots were not up to scratch (trust me I know). Fortunately, tying quality knots is not all that hard and there are some very strong knots that are even fairly easy to tie in the dark.Basic fishing knotsIf you click on the following links they will take you to my original posts with instructions or an instructional video for tying the knots. Discount fishing tackle
    2008-03-29 15:40:00
Discount fishing tackleI know the walleye fishing season is at the door when I visit the fishing fair organized by Musky Canada every year in Lachine on the Montreal island. It's a routine every year, I get up early in the morning and I drive to pick up my walleye fishing buddy Marc Poirier. Marc was kind enough this morning to prepare two nice "café au lait" for our drive to the fishing fair. It's only a 20 minutes drive to Lachine from Marc's place. Lachine it's a portion of Montreal that we know well since we do some fall walleye fishing every year on Lake Saint-Louis.Fishing fair from the old daysThis fishing fair is kind of unique, the event is held in the basement of an old church. We got there around 9h00am and the place was already crowded. You can find a lot of discount fishing tackle such as: reel, rod, bait, home made lures, etc.. It's an opportunity to find some great discount tackle: new and used. For any serious musky angler in the Montreal area, it's a must ev

    Buying The Right Fishing Boat
    2008-03-29 06:46:49
If you are planning to buy a boat, you'll first need to evaluate what you plan to do with it. If your primary purpose is fishing, then you'll want to look into boats that are designed primarily for fishing. If you happen to be a tournament fisherman, or hope to be, then you probably wouldn't be happy with a boat less than a 150 HP motor and shorter than 19 feet in length. Those of you who plan to fish in really deep water on a regular basis will probably need a 200 HP motor and at least 20 feet

Fishing Knots: Haywire Twist (wire leader)
    2008-03-25 19:53:02
The haywire twist is a popular method of joining a hook, swivel or lure to single-strand wire leader. When tied correctly the connection is stronger than the wire itself because of the double-wraps. It is a popular knot for trolling and can be used for big and small game leaders when targeting fish with nasty teeth including wahoo, barracuda, mackerel and sharks. The wire prevents the fish biting off the leader. The haywire twist is declining in popularity since the invention of knotable wire trace, but is still a very useful knot to learn. How to tie a haywire twist - video

Modern fishing rods contain reels, which aid in the retrieval of fish caught in its bait.A much-sophisticated feature is the spinning rod where the entire shaft of the rod except the handle can move around on its axis to allow flexibility when fish caught on snare bait struggles through the water.Like the classic cane fishing rods, the fishing gadget is thick at the handle (bottom) and

Panama: A paradise for sport fishing
    2008-03-22 08:49:07
Source: The Panama PostPanama offers an unique attractiveness in the region by being able to fish in two different oceans the same day, whether it is in the quiet but virginal Pacific, or in Atlantic’s crystal-clear waters.Luis Lopez Alfaro, a member of the Association of Sport Fishing Clubs explained that this organization is trying to organize and promote, together with the country’s tour operators, sport fishing in Panama as an added attraction that should be included in tour packages.“More than a business, what is being tried is to promote fishing as a sport, but always having as a premise conservation of the marine species,” pointed out Lopez Alfaro. Unfortunately, locations closer to Panama Bay like Taboga, Urabá and Melones are being threatened by over-fishing. This is a shame because those are the only close locations to the capital, especially since there is a project to develop tourism which will allow visitors to practice fishing in these locations,” he said. A bad day fishing beats a good day at work
    2008-03-14 01:46:00
I managed to get the week off work and made plans with my old man to fish our local harbor today. Even though everything seemed right we just couldn't take a trick and the day ended with a quick run back to the boat ramp to beat one of the tropical storms we get. The fishing was slow and even though we caught a few fish they were all very small. Sometimes fishing is like that though and the uncertainty and challenge is what makes it fun. Most anglers have heard the saying a bad day fishing beats a good day at work, but what I want to know is if you stand by this saying or not? Please leave a comment.

    Fishing
    2008-03-11 00:17:04
It is pretty obvious that one of my passions in life is golf, but the other interest that takes up the rest of my time is my love of fishing. Forced to choose between the two it would make a very tough decision. I like to get away from it all - and a little cabin on a lake or river is my kind of holiday! There are many cabins available these days and this means that anyone can get away from it all for a few days.Bighorn River Cabins offer some of the finest cabins I have ever seen. These montana cabin rentals come with all the modern amenities and even using the word cabin to describe them seems a little unfair (I swear they are bigger than my house!). They even include a 50 inch plasma TV with the NFL package which is my kind of "roughing it." Don't get too comfortable though as the best part about the cabin is its proximity to the Bighorn River where you can fly fish until your heart is content. When fly fishing montana you can even hire a guide to help you catch one of the

Walleye Fishing tips #23 - Rapalas or Thunder Sticks
    2008-03-10 23:23:00
In the Spring, the best way to catch a trophy Walleye is to troll along the shoreline just before dark or at day-break with a Rapala or Thunder Stick. A 3 or 4 inch Original Floating Rapala or a Junior Thunder Stick with a little touch of liquid fish scent will bring in the big ones. No need to do any speed trolling there, 0.5mph to 2.5mph is usually the best trolling speed. In the Spring the best colors are red, chartreuse, blue and most of all "Fire Tiger". As Spring turns into Summer, silver and brown pick up as the other colors die off. The one color combination that works all year is "Fire Tiger". It's probably the best color combination ever created.

    Camping, fishing and golf
    2008-03-09 19:59:28
In my post the other day I was talking about my passion for fishing and camping. Camping can be heaps of fun, but if you are going to get into it I would recommend purchasing some quality camping accessories to make life easy. The most important, apart from the sleeping gear, is the stove you will use for cooking. Camping becomes more appealing when you can make a decent meal and there is nothing like a Woodgas camp stove. They are one of the most simple, yet effective, stoves on the market and at under 2 pounds you could literally carry it around all day. You could cook 99% of your normal meals on this stove and it cooks very cleanly with very little smoke. It is made from tough stainless steel and is able to withstand the inevitable camping knocks. If you are looking for a camping stove then look no further than the Woodgas camping stove.

    Fishing Glossary
    2008-03-09 13:59:00
I've now been posting walleye information in my blog for a while. As I go along, there is so many technical wording related to fishing that I though that I should start a fishing glossary. This will be an on-going post and I will keep it up to date as I get more and more walleye fishing information. Enjoy the reading!Anadromous: Fish that live most of their adult life in saltwater but spawn in freshwater.Algae: One cell plants usually having the ability to photosynthesize sunlight into energy. Initial step in a food chain.Backtrolling: A system of boat control, simultaneously moving a boat slowly in reverse and order to present a slow presentation when jigging.Bottom-bumper: A lure or a rig which strikes the bottom.Bottom content: Bottom types in a body of water. Fishing advice
    2008-03-05 01:29:41
This question comes up a lot in my conversations with fellow anglers - where is the best place to get fishing advice? There are many places where fishing advice abounds including fishing forums, local fishing media, tackle shops, fishing clubs, other anglers and even pubs. However, not all of this advice is useful and it always paysBefore asking for any local advice remember to respect the locals and they will respect you. Buying someone a beer and listening to them for a while is more likely to get results than talking up your angling prowess endlessly.I personally use a combination of all methods for finding fishing advice. I read everything I can in the local media including current fishing reports. I always ask at my local tackle shop for a bit of current advice (spending a few dollars always helps too.) I am part of a grapevine of local anglers that share information, which makes it very easy to find out where the fish are biting currently.Fishing advice from forumsI think this de

    Fishing Lure Earrings
    2008-03-03 19:43:20
Fishing lure earrings are exactly what you would imagine them to be, either lures that have been turned into earrings or specially made for the purpose. They are certainly a fashion statement and while not everyone can pull them off they can certainly work for some people. My wife has a pair and wears them when we go fishing or as a talking point at various events. She even caught me looking at her ear one day when I had forgotten my spare lure box, but quickly shut me down with a "don't even think about it."I am not really sure where you can get them from (if you know please leave a comment). I think my wife got them from our local jeweler, but we do live in a fishing crazy town. I saw a set of spinnerbait earrings on ebay the other day, which were so cool and this was the catalyst for this post. There are more and more women getting into the sport of fishing and as this number grows you can expect to see more accessories targeting this market. Lately I have noticed more pink fishing ro

    Ice Fishing Knots
    2008-03-02 19:07:24
Like all forms of fishing ice fishing requires strong knots that can handle the tough conditions they will be put through. Choosing the correct knots for ice fishing depends on the line you are using. Contrary to popular belief you do not need a special type of line for this form of fishing either monofilament or braided fishing line will work well with a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to withstand any abrasion.Ice fishing knotsLine to leaderThere are many good knots for this situation and the knots listed below work equally well with monofilament or braid. Just remember to add some extra turns if using braid.Albright knotThis knot works well joining lines of very different diameters. You can find instructions (and a video) for this knot at my earlier post - how to tie an albright knot.Uni to Uni (Double Uni) KnotThis knot is my personal favorite for joining my line to my leader. It is easy to tie, but still retains its strength. You can find instructions for this knot at my earli

    Carp fishing videos
    2008-02-29 20:24:04
There has been lots of interest in the few carp stories I have posted on this site so far and this post is another for all you carp lovers out there. I have tried to find the best 3 carp fishing videos I could find that are not only great to watch, but might help new anglers learn a little something too.Video 1The first video is more instructional in nature, but also shows some great close quarters carp fishing action. It is presented by semi famous fisherman Matt Hayes who I have always enjoyed watching. In this video he is fishing less than 3 yards from his rod tip and looks to be an exhilarating form of fishing.Video 2The second video is fly fishing for carp and has been very well done for an armature video.Video 3This video shows the most popular technique for carping by placing your rod in a holder and using a bite alarm.I hope you enjoyed this post.
