| Fewer, pricier flights and job cuts: airlines' response to oil prices | | 2008-06-08 03:48:00 | | PARIS - AS oil prices soar, airlines are coming back down to earth with a bump - cutting routes and capacity, ramping up prices and axing jobs as bosses freely admit the industry is in the 'worst crisis since 9/11.'Oil prices on Friday broke through the US$139-a-barrel (S$190) level for the first time in New York and US$138 in London, powered by a wilting dollar.A weakening US currency lowers the cost of dollar-priced goods, such as oil, for foreign buyers and drives up demand. With sober analysts such as Goldman Sachs suggesting the price could reach US$200 a barrel within two years, the aviation industry appears to be in a nose-dive.Airlines are particularly susceptible to hikes in the oil price, as jet fuel makes up a substantial part of their operating costs. For customers, already facing escalating food prices, and, at least in Europe, rising inflation and higher interest rates thanks to a credit-crunch, the effect is likely to be steep rises in ticket prices.'The industry needs to | | By: How to be Rich, Happy and Free from Scams | | |

| Long Duration Flights Triple Risk of Blood Clots | | 2008-04-23 21:10:00 | | I fly from Minnesota to Texas a few times a year and always get achy legs. A resent report found the risk of developing potentially fatal blood clots in the legs roughly triples on a flight that lasts longer than four hours. The flights I take are usually only 2 1/2 hours but by the time I factor in the time sitting for take off and landing it's about 3 1/2 hours.Deep vein thrombosis may be harmless and will often disappear without symptoms, but in some cases the blood clots come free from blood vessels in the legs and eventually lodge in the brain, heart or lungs, causing problems ranging from breathlessness and chest pain to heart attack, stroke or death.Researchers examined the travel records of 8755 people who frequently traveled as part of their work for large companies or organizations within a 4.4-year period. They also questioned the participants about various potential risk factors, as well as occurrences of deep vein thrombosis. The greatest risk factor was taking a long-haul | | By: Whole Food And More | | |

| Multi leg flights and low cost airlines | | 2008-04-17 23:05:00 | | The typical low cost airline operates on a point-to-point basis. Costs are kept down as there are no bags to check through to another flight, and no waiting for connections due to delayed flights. Some of the low cost airline networks have become so big though that passengers independently book multi leg flights to get to where they want to go as it still works out cheaper than booking through a scheduled airline. There is the risk that if your first flight is delayed and you miss the connection you will lose your second flight, but if you are savings hundreds of £/€/$'s, it is a gamble I know many take.Tigers Airways offers the ability to booking two flights in the one booking session with their Flight Combo service. This is a great idea as it saves you having to work out if both flights you need are available and you save an extra booking fee.Tiger Airways Destination MapOn the Tiger Airways network possible combination examples include:Melbourne - Darwin - SingaporeDarwin | | By: itravelnet Travel Blog | | |

| Over 900 American Airline Flights Cancelled | | 2008-04-10 14:51:05 | |
Disgraceful! Absolutely disgraceful! All of those people's lives being impacted upon for the sake of some unscrupulous bigwigs taking graft, instead of doing their jobs in the proper manner in the FIRST place (in the words of Hillary Clinton, "You should be ASHAMED!") I can't help wondering how many families couldn't make it to a loved one's side in time to say goodbye to them...how many missed a special event, such as a birthday/anniversary party...I don't care how many different ways they try to spin their so-called excuses for this happening...the fact remains that due to a few greedy and self-centered people, over 933 flights had to be cancelled as a result. | Skybus Airlines goes bust - cancels all flights! | | 2008-04-05 06:43:08 | | "All aboard! $10 a seat, and enjoy the flight!" Ten bucks only? What sort of airline were they contemplating. Cheap's not the word. It was certainly not a "robust business model". That will come later when those that were running the airline plead innocence, saying they did in fact have a "robust business model". This is business-speak for "we hadn't a clue"! One analyst said, "They had a dumb model". More like it.The only people to benefit were those who flew whilst the cheap fares lasted. But what of money for maintenance and security? Doesn't bear thinking about, does it?The free market is supposed to weed out those businesses that don't offer good service or properly made products. However, it must be up to the regulatory authorities to keep at bay moronic types masquerading as entrepreneurs and business operators. The customer may be in control over purchase decisions but a decision leading to unforeseen disasters and pecuniary misfortune should be avoided.Skybus Airlines may have | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

The agency will award four new direct routes to U.S. airlines in 2009."Today, a lot of U.S. travelers are using foreign airlines to travel to China, " Whitaker said. "For example, Air Canada has five daily flights to China. So it's important for U.S. airlines to get more of that business. As well, passengers would prefer to have direct flights," he said.

| Clickair start Edinburgh to Barcelona flights | | 2007-05-18 10:47:22 | | Clickair start flights from Edinburgh to Barcelona on 1 August 2007. I had a quick look at the website and found flights from Barcelona to Edinburgh for 20 euros including taxes but the cheapest flights I saw from Edinburgh to Barcelona were 40 euros. Still not bad around £40 for a return flight. The flight departs from Edinburgh at 10.30 but a bit of an early start to depart Barcelona at 8.10.

Clickair claim to be a superior low cost airline but I haven’t heard from anyone who has flown with them.
