    New England Spring Flower Show
    2007-03-22 06:00:00
To make a Japanese-influenced garden these days, you have to do more than buy a stone lantern and plant some dwarf evergreens. American gardeners today are much more sophisticated. The “Asian fusion” gardening of 2007 is more about the principles of the Japanese or Chinese garden - simplicity and serenity - and less about making an exact replica of an Asian garden or using only plants indigenous to the East. At the New England Spring Flower Show, which runs through Sunday at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston, several of the exhibits focus on how home gardeners can incorporate bamboo, threadleaf Japanese maples and stone lanterns alongside native New England plants and materials...

    2007-03-21 06:00:00
The annual Macy's and Bachman's Spring Flower Show starts Wednesday, but don't expect to see the usual tulips and daffodils. This year's flower garden centers on Africa. Beyond the exotic theme, Gadina Africana, the location is changing this year, too. The two-week show will be held on the first floor instead of in the eighth-floor auditorium of the downtown Minneapolis department store. The African theme was inspired by Macy's “Path to Peace” project, which features handmade peace baskets made by 2,000 genocide survivors in Rwanda. The baskets are available at the Gadina Africana boutique and at www.macys.
