    Two Pink Flowering Crabapples
    2008-05-24 05:40:16
Two Pink Flowering CrabapplesAs usual I enjoyed the Crabapples this year even though their flowers were cut short by the wind and rain we had. These two pink-red Crabs were outstanding and I am glad that I planted both of them. The first one is Malus x 'Prairie Fire' and it is a hardy tree (US Zone 3), which gets to about 15-20 feet tall. Although I have been keeping it a little smaller. It is disease resistant which maybe the most important cultivar selection criteria for me now. ‘Prairiefire’ has been around for some time now, it was introduced in 1982.This second Crabapple was new to me but it performed nicely the last two years. 'Cardinal' Crabapple (Malus 'Cardinal') was introduced by Princeton Nurseries of New jersey and is also considered disease resistant. The flowers a deep pink but the best thing about this tree is the purple color of the leaves. Mine didn’t set a lot of fruit and I hope that changes but overall I am very happy with this tree....

What is Reverence? | flowering of holy perception to life
    2008-05-22 11:49:59
1.Reverence is the floweringof a surrendered heartand love its fragrance.Reverence, is a love affairwith existence, with life, with beauty, the all-pervading Mystery.Reverence is the presenceof awakened living.- Reverend Cailean Benjamin2.Reverence is engaging in a form and depth of contact with Life that is well beyond the shell of form and into essence. Reverence is contact with the essence of each thing and person ... It is contact with the interior of its beingness.Even if you cannot sense the interior, it is enough to know that the form, the shell, is merely an outer layer, and that underneath it the true power and essence of who a person is, or what a thing is, is present. That is what honored in reverence.Reverence is an attitude of honoring life.Whether a person is reverent depends essentially upon whether he or she accepts the principle of the sacredness of Life, any way that he or she defines sacred. Reverence is also simply the experience of accepting that all Life is, in and o...

    Pink Flowering Dogwood
    2008-05-01 04:30:41
Pink Flowering DogwoodCornus florida var. rubra(KOR-nus) (FLOR-ih-duh)When we visited the farm on Sunday they had two pink Dogwoods planted in the circular driveway. I really fell in love with this one. It has the deepest color I have seen this season. The Dogwood was also beautiful but not like this one. My guess is that this is ‘Cherokee Chief’ but it had an even deeper color than they usually do.We got the job at the farm and I am looking forward to working with the owner. I was working at the other farm yesterday and the garden has come alive there. We put in 20 new roses and overall the rose garden looks good. There are a couple of roses that are struggling and they have another week or two to get their act together before they get the ax.I am starting a big job in Greenwich, Connecticut today. There is always a little anxiety before plunging in. The owner seems very nice with a genuine desire to have a nice garden.I happened to notice this Hoover Fly when I went to take a pic...

    White Flowering Dogwood
    2008-04-24 04:31:17
White Flowering DogwoodCornus florida 'Cherokee Princess'Our Molly dog went to heaven yesterday. As much as that hurts it was quite obvious that it was time to help her along. We stayed up with her the night before and her breathing was labored and shallow. She actually stopped breathing a couple of times only to start again. When she stopped drinking that was kind of a benchmark for me. We decided to call her doctor to see if we could ease her discomfort and he came yesterday morning. I have been real sad but at the same time relived that Molly is not struggling anymore. Our other dog, Ruby Tuesday the Border Collie, is stunned. She is 4 years old now and they were like sisters. I am thankful I still have a dog.Siberian Huskies by nature are fun loving, carefree, curious, and free spirited. Molly had all those qualities in abundance. She had many other attributes that made her, as her doctor said, ‘exceptional’. I was kidding him saying that he probably said that about all dogs bu...

Signs of Spring - Flowering Peach
    2008-03-26 08:06:08
Here’s another of the magnificent blooming trees and bushes you’ll find around Dothan this time of year. It is hard to argue that springtime is the most beautiful time of the year. The Flowering Peach comes in white (shown below), pink, and red. I’m 99% sure this is a Flowering Peach, but feel free to correct [...]...

    Japanese Flowering Apricot
    2008-03-25 05:26:40
Japanese Flowering ApricotPrunus mume 'Peggy Clarke'(PROO-nus) (MEW-may)This tree was blooming in the Ladies Border at the NYBG. It is really early and the flowers were a welcomed sight. This is the first time I have seen this cultivar and it is much different then the shrubby white flowered version of Prunus mume growing at the Estate. This was a yellow flowered Cymbidium Orchid from the show. Its color was a beautiful shade of yellow with a hint of green mixed in....

    Flowering Okra (Abelmoschus manihot)
    2007-07-31 11:56:00
Flowering OkraAbelmoschus manihot(a-bel-MOS-kus) (MAN-ee-hot)Malvaceae (mal-VAY-see-ay)Synonyms: Sweet Hibiscus, Edible Hibiscus, Palmate-leaved HibiscusThis is probably going to be the most interesting flower that I saw all summer. It was planted at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, Connecticut. The plant was not too much to look at (a bit tall and stalky) but the flower really captured my fancy. If it hadn’t had a sign (which I took a picture of for reference) I wouldn’t have known what it was, although I would have guessed the Hibiscus family. I actually used the flash on this photo, which is something I usually avoid like the plague. I guess it is the fear of the unknown type of thing. I think it is more like the on-board flash usually washes everything out and is difficult to control. I want a Nikon Speedlight for Christmas. Here is a link on the Flowering Okra. They explain everything better than I could.hibiscus.orgHere are a couple excerpts that I found interesting:“Th...

    Pink Flowering Almond
    2007-05-10 11:33:00
Pink Flowering AlmondPrunus glandulosa 'Rosea Plena'(PROO-nus) (glan-doo-LOW-suh)RosaceaeThis is probably the weakest growing shrub I know of. Each year it gets hit with some sort of infection that makes it look hideous. Sometimes it is toast as early as June 15th. When it is on it is beautiful and this year it is on. It might have helped that a couple of years ago I cut it back hard, with kind of a live or die attitude, and it threw out some new stems. This year I have treated it Bayer All-in-One Flower Care to see if that helps. I don’t mean to disparage this plant but it needs kind of an out of the way place that it can fade into after blooming. It never has covered up the air conditioner it was supposed to and I do wish I had planted it elsewhere but now that it is out in bloom (probably the heaviest bloom I have seen on it in 15 years) all is forgiven.Princess Haiku, who has a cool blog, tagged me to write 5 reasons ‘Why I blog’. I am not sure where to link this to so mayb...

    Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles 'Cameo')
    2007-05-09 11:16:00
Flowering QuinceChaenomeles 'Cameo'(kee-no-MAY-leez)RosaceaeFlowering Quince isn’t a very showy shrub for most of the year but for a couple of weeks they really do look nice. ‘Cameo’ is an improvement over the other Quince (which I think is a Cydonia) on the property, which I swear sometimes only has leaves for 3 months out of the year. I am also growing ‘Jet Trail’ which has a white flower. The color on ‘Cameo’ flowers is really nice and the foliage is a good glossy green. This Quince is planted in a real hard luck spot and has done well. When I was at Wave Hill they had two or three really dark red Quince in bloom and I thought to myself that any plant that color could always find a spot in my garden.I thought this picture was fun. It is of a little patch of Phlox subulata which I featured on March 15th.It was so hopelessly covered with flowers and when the sun was sun shining on it looked as though someone had plugged it in. ‘Candy Stripe’ Phlox was also blooming...

Weeping Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida 'Pendula')
    2007-05-03 11:28:00
Weeping Flowering DogwoodCornus florida 'Pendula'(KOR-nus) (FLOR-id-uh)CornaceaeI wouldn’t wish this tree on anybody with a small garden. No matter what I spray it with or how many times I spray it, it still gets fungusy, and looks like heck by summer. Sometimes it is even earlier than summer. I am sure that this is probably caused by something I am doing and is probably not the tree. It does have an interesting winter outline and for brief time in the spring, when it flowers you remember why you are growing it. It started out its career a little light on the flowering but pretty much flowers heavily every year now. It has been in the garden for about 10 years and it wasn’t that small when I planted it either. I much prefer the two Weeping Kousa dogwoods I have in the same garden. This tree is still a Dogwood and that always commands respect from me. I think it is one of the aristocrats of the flowering trees. It is just that this particular form is odd.I also snapped this pictur...
