Does our New Kitchen Friend ‘ Frozen Food’ have nutrition?
    2008-08-27 16:39:00
Yesterday, we went grocery shopping and as usual I was standing before the Frozen food aisle and asking permission from my better half for buying frozen vegetables , corn and coconut. It happens always with us. Every time, there will be a series of advice for me before the frozen food aisle from my husband. This time, It was different. He did not say anything. Am I dreaming? Of course not! He could not say anything because I had shown him few articles related to Frozen food and its nutrients. Do...

    Food in China
    2008-08-25 20:16:00
Some food from China. This was on Ebuams World, and the general idea was that it was gross. I may be the only one, but I find different foods interesting and always want to try new kinds. Not a single dish here sounds bad to me, I would like to try each one. Is it not a little strange how people can eat things like hotdogs - Americans eat nearly every part of the cow, pig, and chicken at some point - but hate the idea of eating dog, cat, or horse? An animal is an animal. I would never want to eat MY pet, but see no problem eating different things. Ive had rabbit, duck, quail, eel, snail, scorpion, cricket, and even drank a worm in a bottle. Somehow dog, cat, mouse, rat, horse... these things dont seem to strange anymore. Maybe people should have an open mind about experiences, rather than being so afraid of different things. Most Americans probably dont even eat fish if it isnt in stick form. Thanks Ebuams....

Obama's VP Pick and Good Mexican Food.
    2008-08-23 23:57:38
SATURDAY, AUGUST 23The above is a shameless ploy to see if all the BS about tags and page ranking through using the right words in titles actually works.  I think the whole thing is a crock, which is just about what I think of Obama's choice for VP.  Frankly, I can't figure it out, at all.  Can you?  This evening my friend, Glenn told me he thinks Obama's first choice turned him down and the campaign had to do some scrambling. My mother and I went to the annual antique show today.  I found some cabinet photos, enough, I ......

    Warm Weather Food Safety Tips
    2008-08-22 12:00:12
Food safety practices should actually apply all year round, but in summer and any time of warm weather, regular precautions might not be enough. Health Tip: Monitor the Mercury in Your Food
    2008-08-22 10:40:54
(HealthDay News) -- Mercury is found in many types of fish and shellfish. Because significant amounts of mercury can harm unborn babies and young children, women who are or may become pregnant, those who are nursing, and young children should avoid some kinds of seafood. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency offers these guidelines:Avoid eating fish that contain high levels of mercury, including swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish. It's OK to eat up to 12 ounces per week of low-mercury fish and shellfish -- including shrimp, salmon, canned light tuna, pollock and catfish. Albacore tuna and tuna steak have more mercury than canned light tuna, so don't eat more than 6 ounces of albacore or tuna steak per week. Before you eat any fish caught locally, be aware of any advisories about the safety of local fish. ...

    A Fast Food Ban?
    2008-08-20 01:48:00
Honestly, if it isn’t one thing it is another.  This goes back to the post the other day about taking responsibility for your own health.  Well, I guess Southern L.A. doesn’t believe that it can be done and have decided to do something about it.  Check this out… Big Brother is watching you! And if you happen to live in Southern Los Angeles, he is also keeping a close eye on the restaurants in your neighborhood. The City Council in Los Angeles unanimously voted to place a halt on the development of new fast food restaurants in areas of Southern and Southeast Los Angeles. The moratorium would affect a 32-square-mile region of the city with about 500,000 residents. Many of the residents of South Los Angeles don’t own cars, so they have limited access to fresh, healthy food. The ruling is intended to help attract healthier restaurants to this part of the city and give city planners enough time to analyze the current development trends. Accor...

My 5 Week Weight Control With Dr. Heidi And Real Food
    2008-08-19 01:18:00
The last 5 weeks I've been part of Dr. Heidi's Extreme Regime program because I'm very interested in food and health. I know there is a direct link with what we eat, our health and weight. Also, I'm losing the baby fat after 10 years, not much to lose but enough to make me feel and look better. I'm not bloated now, yeah... At a glance here are a few food tips I took away from the ER weight control program. No diet foods, no boxed frozen foods to buy, no fake foods, simple real food. Also no calorie counting, no starving or hunger, not cooking different meals for the ER program and my family (we all eat the same food), no strict diet plan or eating things I hate. Lastly no exercise required (of course I exercise for health - but not for the first phase of fat burning).Catch about extreme regime weight loss program. My core ingredients for success; Dr. Heidi Dulay, eat enough food (it's not how much we eat, but what we eat), animal protein, cheese (raw), Pops, Big B, Cod Liver Oil, Coconu...

    Fast Food German Style
    2008-08-18 08:30:00
"You know I like to complain about waiters and their poor service, but this is ridiculous! I wonder if they automated the banquet manager too". Read on...Germany likes to call itself the "Land of Ideas" - and over the centuries it has certainly had plenty of them. It was Germans who invented the aspirin, the airship, the printing press and the diesel engine. But Germany has surely never produced anything quite as weird as the automated restaurant. I say "restaurant" - but it actually looks more like a rollercoaster, with long metal tracks criss-crossing the dining area. The tracks run all the way from the kitchen, high up in the roof, down to the tables, twisting and turning as they go. And down the tracks - in little pots with wheels fixed to the bottom - speeds food. Supersonic sausages, high-pace pancakes and wine bottles whizzing down to the customers' tables with the help of good old gravity. One pot is spiralling down so fast, it looks like an Olympic bobsleigh (but it...

Should Fast Food Be Banned From High-Fat Neighborhoods?
    2008-08-18 00:11:38
By Scott MowbrayThe rise of urban nutrition activism continues with the L.A. moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles, a low-income area underserved by healthier-menu alternatives and decent supermarkets. Advocates argue that in an obesity epidemic, it’s fair game to block businesses that serve up fatty fare. Opponents counter that attempts to stifle free choice in a free market smack of paternalism and even racism. The National Restaurant Association is predictably bothered; it smells a rat in the fryer. The Benefits of Raw Food
    2008-08-16 05:50:00
I have talked to you guys about Vegetarian diets. I have talked to you about juicing. I have shared my love for smoothies. The one part of my life that I have not mentioned yet is my love for raw food.  Yes. Raw. As in not cooked. I am not a raw foodist although I would love to be. I have no clue how to prepare anything raw other than a salad. I attended a lecture from a raw foodist a couple of months ago and he changed the way I looked at food and my body forever. Raw foodism is NOT vegetarianism. There are many raw foodists that still eat meat. This thought grosses me out until I have that ever present sushi craving. Then I realize that I am no different than they are other than they might eat beef as well. The belief with raw foodism is that you are getting your food in it’s purest form. It is packed full of all the vitamins and goodies that your body needs because all that good stuff hasn’t been cooked out of it. Raw foodists believe that important enzymes are l...

Are you a junk food junkie? I was until a little over a year ago. I knew junk food and fast food was bad for me but didn't think I was doing much harm and I could quit anytime I wanted to. Health Tip: Don't Overdo Fast Food
    2008-08-12 23:31:36
(HealthDay News) -- Fast food is a tempting option for hungry people on the run. But eating it too often or downing too much can wreak havoc on your health and waistline.Keep these tips in mind when considering fast food, provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine:Fast foods are often high in calories, fat, sugar and salt. Many fast foods are cooked with high-calorie fats and butters. Fast food choices tend to lack fresh fruits and vegetables. The large portion sizes offered can encourage overeating. Many fast food restaurants have begun publishing nutritional information about their foods. In other cases, it is available on request. This information can help you better plan what you order. ...

    Food for the Baby.
    2008-08-12 15:55:00
A reader who has a little son asked about baby food “back in the day”. This is for you and your boy, Michael B. Where to start with the massive topic of how babies have been fed over the centuries? A long way back there was a constant debate about the best ‘alternative’ milk – and asses’ milk was a favourite - but I think I will jump to relatively recent times, because it is a bit more accessible, being within memory of some of our personal ancestors. I have chosen as my source a book called Food for the sick and how to prepare it: with a chapter on food for the baby, by Edwin Charles French, published in Louisvile in 1900, for no other reason than that it was at hand. Wherever they are published, there is one great similarity amongst child-feeding books – their absolute rigidity. Where did they get such a sense of certainty from? Edwin considers food for the baby under three headings: ‘Mother’s Milk, Cow’s milk modified, and the “Infant Foods” of Comm...

    2008-08-12 10:39:00
I'm very happy to publish a very personal journal from "Sandi" a lady that is involved with Dr. Heidi Dulay's ER fat burning program. This is Sandi's letter to all the participants in the August program, it really touched my heart. I know there are many people that feel the same way Sandi does (did) about food and weight so this is for all of you. Thank you Sandi for allowing me to share your story. From Sandi in her exact words:Hi all,I thought I would write a note about what Dr. Heidi and I discussed briefly on Saturday on the call about my body not accepting fats and oils. I'm writing to everyone because someone else might be dealing with the same issues I am, so maybe it'll be helpful to you.I spent my youth and into my early twenties with an eating disorder. I would binge for a day or two and then stop eating for days at a time. It's a combination of bulimia and anorexia, but I didn't throw up, I just stopped eating. Anyway, I completely messed up my body chemistry with that form o...

Avoid These Types Of Food If You Have Gout
    2008-08-10 21:35:59
Gout suffers know the pain. They may know that food causes their pain, but most do not know what and why. Gout is inflammation of the joints caused by the excessive amounts of uric acid in the blood stream, which the kidneys are not able to filer out and are left in the blood to settle in the joints. This causes inflammation, which causes significant pain. The uric acid is caused by purines and fat in the diet. These are the ingredients in the foods that need to be avoided. If you are reading this you are curious about what types of food need to be avoided when someone has gout. That is commendable that you are looking to a holistic approach. There are specific types of food to that you should not put on your plate. Meats Meats should be avoided because of the high fat content. Beef, pork, and organ meats are high on the list in the meat group. Some find that chicken does not have enough fat to cause an affect, and some find that it does. When making food choices, keep that in mind...

    Understanding Food Labels
    2008-08-10 21:35:59
You cannot measure every morsel that passes your lips, but it is a good idea to measure most foods and beverages until you get a feel for portion sizes. It is a supersized world out there, and most people are surprised to find that their idea of a single serving is actually two or three. If you are into bells and whistles, there are food scales that are preprogrammed with nutritional information, as well as scales that will keep a running total of your daily food and nutrient intake for you. The only tools you really need, however, are a simple and inexpensive gram scale, dry and liquid measuring cups, and idea on reading food labels. Among all of the mentioned tools, reading food labels seem to be the most effective way of determining the right kind of food to be bought in the supermarket. It lets you make sensible food selections. Through the "Nutrition Facts" section in a particular item in the grocery, you can identify the amount of serving sizes provided in that product. With food...

acquire or take a better food hygiene to control cholesterol

In the case of cholesterol, it must first acquire or take a better food hygiene. And tame cholesterol does not mean make a cross on dietary diversity. The first rule is: "Eat good and healthy!"• Eat fat meat in moderation, fine meats, fatty cheese, cream, butter, margarine traditional, chocolate, biscuits.• Replace fatty meat with lean meat: poultry, rabbit, veal. Do not forget: saturated fatty acids contained in animal fats increase cholesterol.• Eat fish twice a week at minimum.• Consume with moderation, the cholesterol-rich foods such as liver, eggs, butter.• Opt for the bread, potatoes shirt.• Eat enough fruits and vegetables.• Do not add salt to your meals: our diet contains sufficient.• Prefer mono-unsaturated acids in olive oil and peanut that lower cholesterol overall acting mainly on the "bad cholesterol", rather than saturated fatty acids butter. The second rule is "Eat less." E.P.A. Says Oil Goals Are More Important Than Food Costs
    2008-08-07 15:23:00
Not too many issues make me more ANGRY than the rising price of food. With so many families barely getting by-- especially with through-the-roof gas prices too-- there is no way that rising food prices aren't going hurt the average American. Come on people! You see, the EPA decided against making less Ethinol despite the damage it is causing the price of grain in the U.S. Although the EPA wants to save the planet, they forget that even though humans EATING may hurt the Earth too, we still have to eat.The New York Times reports:WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency rejected on Thursday a request to cut the quota for the use of ethanol in cars, concluding, for the time being, that the goal of reducing the nation’s reliance on oil trumps any effect on food prices from making fuel from corn.I for one am offendede at the complete lack of concern for American families who are struggling to pay the bills and eat. I'm talking about working families with children. What do we have ...

How Supersized Food and Drinks Were Born...
    2008-08-07 10:53:00
Do you know how supersized foods and drinks came about? Think it was McDonald's? You're not too far off but no it wasn't McDonald's or 7-11 with the Big Gulp. The history of Supersizing:In the 1960's a man named David Wallerstein worked for a chain of movie theaters, where he struggled to expand sales of soda and popcorn, the high-markup items that theaters depend on to make profits.Wallerstein tried everything he could think of to boost sales, two-for-one deals, matinee specials, but found he couldn't get customers to buy more than one soda and one bag of popcorn. Why? Because going for seconds makes people feel like pigs.Wallerstein discovered that people would spring for more popcorn and soda, a lot more, as long as it came in a single gigantic serving. This is how the Big Gulp and, in time, the Big Mac and jumbo fries came along.Until his death in 1993, Wallerstein served on the board of directors at McDonald's. Though Ray Kroc himself took some convincing about supersizing: the McD...

Food Types That Cause Gout And Why
    2008-08-05 21:17:24
Gout is a type of rheumatoid arthritis. It has been determined that this is caused when purines, found in food are broken down in the body and become uric acid. Usually the body will filter this chemical, which is not, in and by itself, harmful. The pain comes when the uric acid level is escalated to a medical state called hyperuricemia. When the uric acid gets too high the body forms it into crystals. The common place for these to form is in the joints. This will cause inflammation in the joints. This is called gout. This condition is quite painful. In this state a person can find it most difficult to function and complete their daily tasks. Foods That Cause Gout Fat is a common ingredient in the foods that cause gout. That is why dairy products can cause gout. Typically dairy products such as whole milk, cheese, ice cream, and butter are high in fat. Other foods that cause gout do so because of the high purine content. Those foods are fish, poultry, pork, beef and seafood. Quite of...

    2008-08-05 04:57:00
The Viet Nam Food Association (VFA) has petitioned the Government to waive export tariffs or readjust the taxes on rice mainly due to the decreasing prices of goods in the local and global markets, which are causing great losses to farmers. The price of rice in July dropped unexpectedly to US$600-700 per tonne from US$1,100-1,200 per tonne in April and May, according to the VFA. International...

Kid's Get More Than A Toy With Fast Food Meals, Too Many Calories and Bad Fats.
    2008-08-05 01:31:00
Kid's meals at popular fast-food restaurants deliver more than a quick lunch or dinner -- 90 percent of them have far more than a meal's worth of calories and many are loaded with fat and salt too, according to a report released on Monday. The Center for Science in the Public Interest -- the group that took the fun out of movie popcorn and Chinese takeout by revealing the fat and calorie content of such treats -- said it is difficult to find anything remotely healthful for a child to eat at several restaurant chains.CSPI examined the menus at 13 popular restaurants that promote children's meals."Ninety-three percent of 1,474 possible choices at the 13 chains exceed 430 calories -- an amount that is one-third of what the Institute of Medicine recommends that children aged four through eight should consume in a day," the group said."People may not get a heart attack until their 50s or 60s, but arteries begin to clog in childhood," said CSPI nutrition policy director Margo Wootan. "Most of...

Stay Young and Healthy By Eating The Right Food
    2008-08-04 00:00:00
Healthy foods to stay young? Of course, you’ve heard it before, probably when mom insisted to eat more apples and less burger even when you thought you were too young to age. Indeed, mom was right. You’ll never know when you’ll start to age until you notice some crumpling and folding on your skin. Premature [...]...

The Food Pyramid And Healthy Eating…
    2008-08-04 00:00:00
Most people have heard about “The Food Pyramid”. It’s a government created guideline for “healthy eating”. It’s sort of a general nutrition guide for the country. In fact, the government (US Department of Agriculture) has recently upgraded it’s food pyramid — but the truth is that it’s still an unsatisfactory guideline for people who want to [...]...

Banning Fast Food in Los Angeles: Thank you Big Government
    2008-08-03 15:36:29
I waited close to a week to write about the fact that Los Angeles decided to ban fast food restaurants. I predicted this for quite some time as many of you know. Once they started banning cigarettes in restaurants, there was no justification for them stopping at smoking. Still, what I certainly did not anticipate was the lack of public outcry by people who are now treated like infants. Not only was there a pathetic lack of moral outrage, but the Los Angeles counsel voted for this measure unanimously. Evidently, more and more people are accepting the argument that government should protect us from ourselves. It is really depressing.Essentially, the goal of this new ordinance was simple; the citizens were getting too fat because there were too many fast food chains in their neighborhoods (40% of all restaurants in poor neighborhoods), so this was the brilliant way to make people skinny. Consequently, instead of suggesting that people make better food choices, the stunning intellect ...

Filipino Food Buffet at Roppongi (六本木でフィリピン食べ放題)
    2008-08-02 03:07:00
After our taxing transaction at the Philippine Embassy, we were approached by a man outside of the embassy and invited us for a 1k Filipino buffet near the embassy. So me and Ernest were excited to eat Filipino food and without hesitation went with him. It was a makeshift place. The place called Bauhaus at the back of Hardrock Cafe in Roppongi's entertainment district was a bar during the night and a restaurant during the day. Good way to augment the income and help fellow Filipinos relieve the Filipino food which is hard-to-find-and-cook here in Japan. There were some Filipinas who tagged along their Japanese kids and husbands. In a way, I was happy to see from the eyes of those Japanese men that they liked the Filipino food very much despite having too much oil and fats on it. There was even one family who just went there to pay the owner some money and when the kid saw the food, she wanted to eat there. She was crying and begging for her mom and Japanese Dad to eat there because she...

The Vegan Food Pyramid: Answering the Age-Old Vegan Question
    2008-07-31 21:29:48
Vegans are nearly constantly bombarded with questions about their diet. "What do you eat?" seems to be the most-often asked one. Many people find it hard to understand what a person's diet could possibly consist of if it doesn't include meat, eggs and dairy. The answer to the question of what vegans eat is, of course, everything else! Vegans enjoy a wide variety of foods. In fact, most vegans have a more varied diet than omnivores because taking meat and dairy out of the equation encourages cooks to be more creative with their meals and try out new foods that would have been ignored otherwise. Nourish Your Body with Healthy Vegan Foods To help vegans make sure that they are getting the right nutrients to nourish their bodies, a vegan food pyramid has been created. Like the familiar USDA food pyramid, the vegan food pyramid gives general advice about which food groups should be consume and in what quantities. The base of the vegan food pyramid is composed of fruits and vegetables. This ...

Food Poetry : The Secret Life of Chefs
    2008-07-28 05:59:40
What is food? it is life giving, nourishing both physically, mentally and sometimes spiritually.Working with food and creating food fosters a keen connection to not only the ingredients, but the kitchen and tools used to create it - the kitchen becomes a safe haven where both chaos and creativity are awakened - the sites, the smells, the sounds become a second skin, and you develop a sixth sense about this culinary world.Your co-workers become a living breathing single entity, each and everyone striving for the same outcome. All dancing in a timed rhythm around the kitchen , hurrying to get your prep done, to get your major courses panned in hotel pans within the steamer or in stock pans and sauce pans upon the stove, whose many squared and blackened burners are set aflame, all movements are accomplished in a delicate balance of wits and skill.Image Credit: ljcybergalHere is a poem that I wrote that encompasses a brief glimpse into the chef's kitchen. Honest Foods Snacks- Real Food and Great Taste in Planks And Squares
    2008-07-28 02:47:00
I recently had an opportunity to sample a whole food snack. I'm really picky about snacks especially if the label says Healthy all Natural. I've learned healthy and all natural don't mean much. These snacks are honestly good, great! And good for you - really I didn't expect healthy to taste this good. I know you can't wait to know what it is, right? By the way I am not affiliated with Honest Foods. I'm simply passing along something I found that I think is really good.Honest Foods Country Squares are tasty snack bars loaded with naturally sweet fruits, hearty nuts and seeds, and whole grains. With their fresh-baked flavor, Honest Foods Country Squares are a great alternative to nutrient-void cookies or muffins, and offer sustaining energy to be enjoyed as a healthy snack anytime. The squares are very moist and chewy. They are a little sweet for my taste. Each bar provides 200 mgs of Omega-3s, four grams of fiber, six grams of protein, 16 grams of whole grains and no trans-fats. They ar...

    Healthier Kids' Food in Restaurants
    2008-07-25 10:24:42
image by foreversouls Two local restaurants; Globetrotters and the chain, Swensens, have just received some good press. The Straits Times reported that they are have "pledged to provide healthier dishes for children in a programme organised by the Health Promotion Board". This means that the meals will contain less salt and butter, more vegetables and less fried food.We all know that "kids' menu" usually means chicken nuggets, hamburgers, fries and pizza. I find it frustrating when I try to instill healthy eating habits at home, and then taking the kids out for a meal means they are eating food that is high in fat and salt and low in nutrition. When restaurants resort to these easy options it tells me they don't really care about quality, so it is great that these two restaurants have joined this 'Healthier Children's Menu Programme'. A shame that only two restaurants have joined, but perhaps more will follow. I will have to visit soon and see if the difference is noticeable.http://www...

Test Your Weight Loss Food Wits - Which 2 Of These 10 Aid Weight Loss?
    2008-07-25 09:58:00
Why does a rabbit food diet fail? If it has no calories how can it not work? The typical rabbit food diet doesn't have the key nutrients your body needs so your body goes into protection mode. It anticipates a famine so it starts to pump up your fat storage machine. One reason 80% of Americans are still overweight is because they don't realize which foods they're eating interfere with weight loss.Of course, we all know about ice cream, bon bons, alcohol and fat, sweet lattes. But what about foods that are not as obvious?Test your weight foods wits below. Which 2 foods don't sabotage weight loss? Diet Foods (Fake Food) Making You Fatter?
    2008-07-25 09:20:00
It's not your fault you are not losing weight on diets. It's a myth that all you have to do is eat less and move more. Blame it on the information we have about why people are overweight and how to shed the pounds. Blame it on the "diet foods" on the store shelves.Overweight people are the most disciplined folks I've met. They have tried for years to lose weight with roller-coaster results. They do not like being overweight and try different "diets" looking for the one to help.Fake food makes you fatter. Low calorie, sugar free foods have artificial sweeteners that are actually toxins in our body. Your body doesn't like these toxins and tries to protect you by filtering them through your liver. When your liver is overloaded your body protects you by retaining water to start a different protection method. The water is used to escort the toxins out of your body, but often they get lodged in your tissue. Your body wants to flush the toxins, but when they don't go, your body continues to r...

    Food To Lower Your Cholesterol
    2008-07-23 21:53:00
High cholesterol levels are slowly killing off the population. The increasing prevalence and risk of hypertension and heart disease in Americans are ringing the alarm bells in the country's health sector. Health officials are desperately trying to find ways to combat the rise and make people aware of the eating lifestyle and exercise lifestyle that they are imbibing. The truth about cholesterol Although cholesterol is mainly the culprit in the increase in high blood pressure in the body, not all cholesterol that we take in is essentially bad. In fact, small amounts of cholesterol is being used by the body in the production of bile salts and in the transformation of Vitamin D. Cholesterol also plays a role in the balancing of hormones especially in women. There are two kinds of cholesterol, the good and the bad as the lay people will like to clal them. The bad cholesterol or the LDL is the kind that is often found in saturated fats and trans fatty acids. These are taken into the body...

    Food Signals.
    2008-07-22 16:23:00
July 23 I have a wonderful find for you today! Have you ever wondered about a quiet life? A very quiet life. Life in a silent monastic order? (I can hear a lot of my friends roaring with laughter at the thought of myself adhering to a no-speaking rule. But I digress.) Lots of questions about the life. How would one communicate to Sister Bertha that she wais a miserable, nasty old biddy? That one’s cell was too austere, and could one please brighten it up with a pic of Brad Pitt? That one was not up to spending one more day on one’s knees in the herb garden – wasn’t there enough time on the knees already? An how would one get another ladleful of the delicious monastery gruel or morsel of hard monastery bread at dinner-time? The sisters of the Monastery of Sion in Middlesex in the fifteenth century had a ‘Table of Signs’ to get around the rules of silence. I have searched the list, and cannot find the signs for the cursing, lusting, and work-avoiding issues ...

How Food Affects The Brain - Study
    2008-07-17 09:03:00
Our brain needs food nutrition to stay healthy. When you feel tired or depressed or just kind of out of sorts, it's because your brain feels these things. Scientist have found different ways food affects the brain. The major areas in this study include:Benefit of Omega-3 Fatty Acid OilsEffects of diet on mental health can be transmitted across generationsJunk food and fast food negatively affect the brain's synapsesFolic acid can help reduce the age-related decline in cognitive functionConsuming excess calories cause free radical damage to the brain"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain," said Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain. Fond Food Memories from the Army Days
    2008-07-16 11:17:13
16 July 2008After meeting Baohui, went to grab some bite before a late dinner. Had a $1 popiah at the coffeeshop right opposite Serangoon JC. Think the hard work and mental churning of ideas have increased my metabolic rate. Instead of buying half a steamed chicken for a bite, we went to the traditional grocery shop adjacent to the coffeeshop and bought Indomee instant noodles.Back in my army training in SISPEC at Pulau Tekong, I used to buy Indomee instant noodles for supper whenever there is time to patronise the canteen. During training days, such food, when enjoyed with fellow comrades, acts as morale-boosters.Another food item that I vividly always remember would be the Milo Bar. I remember that I would always smuggle a bar when there is outfield training. I would also buy a few extra packets to resell to my bunkmates. Those were the days.Baohui volunteered to help me cook the fabulous noodles. Due to some delays on my fault, the first serving had the noodles a little too soft...A...

Los Angeles City Council's "Fast Food Ban" Moratorium
    2008-07-15 10:35:00
    L. A. City Council is considering a moratorium to "ban" any more fast food locations from opening in the South Central and related Los Angeles areas. This is based on statistics that about 45% of the restaurants in Los Angeles are fast food joints. Big Brother is just watching out for you it seems. More of the "Government knows best..."It's all about making sure you stay healthy they say. Apparently, you are completely incapable of deciding what you can and can't eat. And you should not be allowed to make that choice either. I suppose they're still clinging to that age-old crap about obese people, smokers and the like being more costly to care for. So, they want to make sure you understand that you can't care for yourself.CNN had the audacity to then play a few clips of people who supposedly live in the South Central Los Angeles area.
