Why did Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail Founder) walk away from Bill Gates?
    2008-06-15 05:31:00
A little more than a year after he sold his company Hotmail to Bill Gates' Microsoft Corporation, 30-year old Sabeer Bhatia has said goodbye to Gates to start yet another company. There's no firm idea for a company yet, Bhatia says. He will only reveal this much: Along with a few friends from Stanford University, where he earned a masters degree in electrical engineering, he is working on a plan for an e-commerce company. "There's a lot of potential and excitement in the e-commerce space," he says. "I've got a slew of raw ideas." The raw idea he had for a free email company led to the foundation of Hotmail over four years ago. But soon he would stun the industry by selling his start-up company, one of the most visible success stories in America, to Bill Gates. After overseeing the merger of his company with Microsoft's online network about a year ago, Bhatia became the new general manager of strategic business development for MSN.com. Right now he has just a "small office in

    2008-06-04 20:44:00
2006NAPA ValleyCaliforniaWould drink again. This is a very simple, refreshing versatile "cheap" wine. On a warm summer day, served with the right appetizer, this is pretty good. A very light, light, golden green / straw in color, it's a mild blend of citrus and slight vanilla. Not too dry, not too sweet. Accompanies cheese and crackers and strawberries well.I take a figure drawing class at a museum and besides that being the best perk of all to the class - being surrounded by the paintings and sculptures of some great American artists - one of the other very nice perks is that we often stop in the middle of our four hour class, get up and go see the latest exhibit. Often we apply it to what we are doing, other times we just admire it. This past week, we had the luxury of being able to participate in the opening reception for an artist I immediately loved: Angelika Rinnhofer. Angelika exhibited her incredible photographs done in such a way as to resemble Renaissance and Baroque oil paint

“the often overlooked co-founder of YouTube,” has put together a venture investment group
    2008-03-20 17:09:00
It is said that the new VC fund will be “founder friendly.” With messages being passed around the startup world concerning seemingly unfair pressures and disadvantages associated with financing terms for fledging ventures (see: thefunded), such a tag line may prove attractive to new companies looking for backing without having to sign off large percentages of stock/ownership or agree to otherwise unfavorable terms. Of course, as the old adage goes, the proof is in the pudding. We’ll have to wait and see whether Karim and partners Kevin Hartz and Keith Rabois can live up to such a claim - albeit an unofficial one.So far, Youniversity has not registered as a VC firm with the SEC or the state of California, where it is based. A look back at the histories of Karim & Co shows the YouTube co-founder as a member of the PayPal workforce, where he associated with Chad Hurley and Steven Chen prior to launching the video site.

“Girls Gone Wild” Founder Goes to Florida
    2008-03-11 12:52:04
Joe Francis, the boss of “Girls Gone Wild,” is being released from a Nevada jail so he can head to Florida in order to face charges concerning his filming of underage girls. Apparently, Francis has made a fortune selling videos of young women who posed half-naked and in provocative situations. He has been unable, until now, to leave the Nevada jail, where he was in for federal tax evasion charges. Francis’ defense lawyer, Fred Atcheson, gave the court a $1.5 million cashier’s check to cover Francis’ bail on the tax charges and assured the judge that Francis would meet all the other conditions required for his release."Today I posted my bond in Reno so that I can immediately return to Florida to face the charges against me," Francis said in a statement, according to People.Francis has been jailed on both sides of the country for nearly a year. He's caught in a tug-of-war between federal prosecutors in Nevada and state attorneys in Florida. In 2002, Becky Lynn Gritzke discovered

'Easy-close loan' founder scraps with bank
    2008-02-16 15:45:00
Owner Harry Hedaya is known in the Tampa Bay area mortgage business as the founder of the Loan Corp., home of the "easy-close loan." At the height of Florida's residential boom, Hedaya said the company employed more than 200 people amid annual sales of $18.8 million. It was good enough to earn it a spot on Entrepreneur magazine's top 500 list. Hedaya also invested in the Landlord Academy, a Tampa company founded by Bryan Chavis. Hedaya told the Business Journal in 2006 that Loan Corp. was nearing $1 billion in closed loans and he had plenty of money to fund the academy's growth. That partnership ended after less than a year.

what you should be focused on as a founder
    2008-02-07 02:04:00
What a Startup Company Founder’s Priority List Looks LikeLeading a startup company is nothing like leading a big, established company. Startups are focused foremost on survival, while big companies direct their efforts toward growth or in the worst case, slowing decline. It’s natural that many entrepreneurs start companies with a task list that looks a lot like it did at their old job. After all, they’re likely coming from an established career in a big company. Big companies (usually) have the critical infrastructure in place and as inefficient as they may be, workers are free to look much farther down the road.Startup Founders don’t get the luxury of looking too far down the road. They don’t get to spend inordinate amounts of time on product development or internal policy making. For this reason, a startup Founder’s priority list looks a whole lot different.Job #1: Get Money in the DoorA Founder’s most important question is “do we have enough money to make it past our

Why being the company founder is always good

Looking after yourself as a founder
    2007-11-02 04:05:00
When to Take the Money Off the TableIn Vegas, if you keep on winning, you can keep on playing all night. But if you lose it all just once, you're done for good. The only way to ever get ahead in the long term, is to take some money off the table when you're lucky enough to have it.Pouring money back into your startup is a lot like betting at Vegas. Ideally if you keep winning you'll be able to keep pouring money back into more growth, and more profits. But if you lose just once and have already invested all the capital you had on reserve, you're done for.Startup founders need to learn the value of taking money off the table when it's available. Without knowing when it's time to write yourself a check, you may end up creating a payday for everyone else while putting yourself in jeopardy in the process.(Re)Filling your CoffersWhen you started the company you probably had some money saved up or some capital reserves to fall back on. That could have been anything from your home equit

    Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba
    2007-10-26 11:28:00
Morihei Ueshiba was one of history's greatest martial artists. Even at age eighty, he could disarm any foe, down any number of attackers, and even pin an opponent with a single finger. Although virtually invincible as a warrior, he was, above all, a man of peace who detested fighting, war and any kind of violence. His way was that of Aikido, "the art of peace." He is referred to as O Sensei, "the great teacher."Morihei Ueshiba spent his youth and early adulthood training under a variety of sword and Jujutsu masters. As he grew older he experienced increasing disquiet stemming, in part, from his rather violent youth, feeling that training for the sake of winning was not enough. One day, after a long, arduous period of training and meditation, he came to recognize an innate understanding that the true purpose of the martial arts was to be the promotion of universal peace and love. He saw that the ideal victory was a conflict resolved without winner or loser. He began to change his martial techniques and practices he had learned throughout his life to align his art with his new understanding. This led to the formal development of Aikido."In Aikido, we never attack. An attack is proof that one is out of control. Never run away from any kind of challenge, but do not try to suppress or control an opponent unnaturally. Let attackers come any way they like and then blend with them. Never chase after opponents. Redirect each attack and get firmly behind it."– Morihei Ueshiba****Castle Rock Aikido is a traditional, Japanese Aikido martial arts school in Castle Rock, Colorado located just 20 minutes south of Denver Metro and only 30 minutes north of Colorado Springs.Visit www.craikido.com to get a coupon for a free class.

Body Shop Founder Anita Roddick Dies At 64
    2007-09-14 17:52:22
11 September 2007LONDON - Body Shop founder Anita Roddick, who used her international cosmetics chain to promote eco-friendly practices long before they were widely fashionable, died Monday night after suffering a major brain hemorrhage, her family said. She was 64.Roddick, known as the “Queen of Green,” was lauded around the world for trailblazing business practices that promoted environmentalism and other causes dear to her heart, from human rights to Third World debt relief.“Businesses have the power to do good,” Roddick wrote on the Web site of the company, which was bought by the French company L’Oreal Group last year for $1.14 billion. The Body Shop opposed animal testing and tried to encourage Third World development by purchasing materials from small communities in poorer countries. It founded a human rights award and invested in a wind farm in Wales as part of its campaign to promote renewable energy.“Before Body Shop you could only find cruelty-free products in hippie shops — now they are everywhere,” said People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals vice president Dan Mathews, who worked with Roddick on campaigns in the 1980s, when Body Shop became a global brand.Modest startThe company grew into a global phenomenon with nearly 2,000 stores in 50 countries but Roddick, the daughter of Italian immigrants, said she opened her first outlet in 1976 in Brighton, southern England, with only modest hopes.“I started the Body Shop simply to create a livelihood for myself and my two daughters while my husband, Gordon, was trekking across the Americas,” she wrote. “I had no training or experience ...”She said she drew inspiration from women’s beauty rituals that she discovered while traveling in developing countries, and lessons that her mother passed on from life during World War II.“Why waste a container when you can refill it? And why buy more of something than you can use? We behaved as she did in the Second World War, we reused everything, we refilled everything and we recycled all we could,” Roddick wrote. She joked that the Body Shop’s trademark green color scheme came about by accident because it was the only color that could cover the mold on the walls of her first shop.Made a dameRoddick and her husband stepped down as co-chairmen in 2002 but she continued to work as a consultant. In recognition of her contribution to business and charity, Queen Elizabeth II made her a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, in 2003.Roddick rejected criticism that Body Shop was compromising its values by becoming part of L’Oreal, which had not abandoned animal testing. She said it was a chance for Body Shop, which remains independently run, despite its new owners, to teach its new parent company.Roddick who died at a hospital in Chichester, had revealed in February that she contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion while giving birth to a daughter in 1971.She made the announcement after becoming the patron of the British charity Hepatitis C Trust. She had been carrying it for more than three decades, but it was detected only two years ago after a blood test.It was not immediately clear if there was a link between the disease and her brain hemorrhage.'Incredible woman'Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was deeply saddened by her death.“She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market,” Brown said.Greenpeace executive director John Sauven called Roddick an “incredible woman” who would be “sorely missed.”“She was so ahead of her time when it came to issues of how business could be done in different ways, not just profit-motivated but taking into account environmental issues,” Sauven said. “When you look at it today, and how every company claims to be green, she was living this decades ago.”Source
