| Rusty Foxglove | | 2008-08-02 06:27:06 | | Rusty FoxgloveDigitalis ferruginea(dig-ee-TAH-liss) (fer-oo-GIN-ee-uh)Today’s plant is one that I haven’t grown before but have admired on several occasions. It is a self-seeding biennial that can establish large colonies when the conditions are right. Those conditions include moist, acidic, rich soil with part shade. Any Foxglove looks good to me and this one is nice since the colors are a little different.Foxglove is one of the most requested plants by clients. I guess its stately, architectural appearance is one reason. The biennial nature of its life cycle is tough for borders but I love planting them in naturalized, woodland and cottage gardens. Since we heavily mulch most plantings it is difficult for the seeds to germinate. We have been experimenting this year with not mulching around the Foxglove plantings but won’t really know if this works until next year. Remember to leave at least a few faded flower stalks to develop fully for reseeding. I like to remove some of the s... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
| | Spice Island Foxglove | | 2007-07-29 13:30:00 | | FoxgloveDigitalis ‘Spice Island’This Foxglove probably isn’t new to anyone else but me but this was the first time I had seen it. It was obviously re-blooming because I could see the stalks that had been cut off earlier. The color is nice, a little strange but agreeable. The couple of references I found on the net said it was a perennial but only time will tell that. Basically I will believe that when I see it. I did notice the price was almost twice as much as the ‘regular’ Foxglove. I wish I had looked at the foliage closer as the websites I visited said the foliage is ‘felt-like’ and ‘evergreen’. I think this one is going to have to be tried out to get some first hand observation of the characteristics. This is the best thing I found on ‘Spice Island’:“A new evergreen foxglove that just doesn't know when to stop blooming! Unique and stunning peachy-yellow flowers are lightly dusted inside with nutmeg. They bloom on numerous densely-packed spikes which branch... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
| | Inside a Foxglove Flower | | 2007-05-12 12:33:00 | | I guess every gardener knows what a Foxglove is. This is a slightly different view of the inside of the flower. I grew a batch from seed last year and only one white one came out of several hundred. It is a classic flower that I gat requests for all the time. It is however a biennial and that requires keeping after them if you want them every year.I had to do some emergency gardening yesterday if you can believe that one. One of my customers called me and told me that a party of 150-200 people was going to happen at her house today. I had her work scheduled for next week. Her husband is on a reality TV show right now and this party is part of his task so not only was it a party but they were going to be filming it. Since the show is still in production I can’t say anything about it but it was fun seeing the film crews running around interviewing his wife and mother and kids. I hope he wins, as I couldn’t think of anyone that deserves it more. This couple are some of the kindest and... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
