Choosing Fruits and Vegetables For A Healthy Diet
    2008-07-18 18:41:52
The new food guidelines issued by the United States government recommend that all Americans eat about nine servings of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables each and every day. This is important to provide your body with the minimal levels of essential nutrients and antioxidants needed by each and every cell in your body to support optimal health. When you first hear that number, it may seem like a lot, but it is actually much easier than you think to fit that many servings of fruits and vegetables into your healthy diet plan. Shelves of the grocery stores are bursting with fresh fruits and vegetables. Uncooked, these provide essential nutrients, fiber and even a portion of the water you need every day of your life. In addition, vegetables and fruits are some of the least expensive, most nutrient rich, foods in the supermarket. With all these fruits and vegetables to choose from, it is very easy to make these nutritious, delicious foods part of your daily meals and snacks.Adding nine servin

Time For A Tummy Tuck? Blame The Fruits
    2008-07-18 07:47:00
Bring out all those sayings about fruits being your best friend and keeping the doctors away and so on and so forth and kick them all in the gut (or in the pit)!If recent studies are anything to go by, that slice of apple is going to conspire to add a millimeter or two to your girth and if you are the type to chow down seriously on fruits, you could be heading for a tummy tuck surgery.U.S. scientists found that fructose, a monosaccharide that is found in fruits in addition to glucose, could be potentially disturbing where weight control is concerned. The study found that too much of fructose could hasten obesity and diabetes in individuals. They don't fail to add that processed foods and soft drinks are also big donors of fructose and caution people to tamp down on the urge to chug a can of your favorite cola. High-fructose corn syrup or HFCS while not as harmful as pure fructose can also be a promulgator of weight gain. Many of the nation's obese opt for a cosmetic surgery p

Answering seems simple enough. For many people however, the need to avoid criticism and seek praise causes them to respond in a manner consistent with expected norms. Eat These Fruits And Veggies To Prevent Cancer
    2008-06-06 08:07:00
My last post was asking if you are getting enough fruits and veggies to prevent cancer. The question should be are you getting enough of the right ones to prevent cancer. The National Cancer Institute says about one third of all cancers are linked to diet. Here's the first post about cancer and foods.Let's look at how food can help save you from cancer. Full-fledged cancer is a long time happening. That means you have years in which to literally starve or feed potential cancer. Two to three decades are typical and four to five decades not unusual from the time a single cell suffers genetic changes until a tumor appears. What you eat may interfere with that cancer process at many stages. Wandering cancer cells need the right conditions in which to attach and grow. Food agents can foster a hostile or a favorable environment. The right foods eaten after cancer is diagnosed may help prolong your life.Ever since scientist started probing a cancer-diet connection in the 1970's, the antidote

Are You Getting Enough Fruits And Veggies To Prevent Cancer?
    2008-06-05 01:50:00
From the time we were toddlers we were told to eat our fruits and veggies. Over the years new research has shown eating more fresh whole food prevents anything from cancer to gum disease. But how many people are listening and getting these foods everyday?Let's look at how foods can fight cancer. Cancer is a slow progression that starts with the "initiation" of a single cell by cancer-causing substances. Foods and food compounds can interfere with this cancer process at about ten stages of development, according to John D. Potter, M.D., of the University of Minnesota. *Food compounds can prevent agents from being "activated." They can block the mutation of cell's DNA. *They can stimulate enzymes in the body that flush cancer-causing chemicals out of the body.*They can prevent cancer-causing oncogenes from being switched on.*They can combat bacteria related to stomach cancer.*They can even help prevent cancer cells from spreading.Next post will show major foods with anticancer activity.S

    Fruits and Nuts Boosts Estrogen
    2008-05-30 05:12:00
Eating foods rich in the mineral boron can boost estrogen levels in postmenopausal women to a stunning degree - as much as taking estrogen replacement therapy does, according to studies by U.S. Department of Agriculture researcher Dr. Forrest Nielsen. Boron seems to work, he says, by boosting steroid hormones in the blood. He documented that in women getting adequate amounts of boron, the most active form of estrogen - estradiol 17B - doubled, reaching levels found in women on estrogen replacement. The diet of the average American contains about half the boron found effective in the studies.High levels of boron are found in fruit, especially apples, pears, grapes, dates, raisins and peaches; in legumes, especially soybeans; in nuts, including almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts; and in honey. You could get the dosed used in the study by eating a couple of apples a day and three and a half ounces of peanuts.More food with natural estrogen.Reference: Food your miracle medicine, Jean Carper. pa

How To Read Labels On Fruits And Veggies - Yes They Have Labels
    2008-05-21 02:34:00
We hear daily to read labels on packages of food, pet food cleaning products, vitamins and more, but did you know fruits and vegetables have important labels also? Today the banana might not be just an average banana. If you care about how your food is grown the label tells all.As much as we may dislike them, the stickers or labels attached to fruit do more than speed up the scanning process at the checkout stand. The PLU code, or price lookup number printed on the sticker, tells you how the fruit was grown. As reported by Maria Gallagher, in the June 26, 2002 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, by reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides. Here's how it works:For conventionally grown fruit, (grown with chemicals inputs), the PLU code on the sticker consists of four numbers.Organically grown fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 9.Genetically engineered* (GM) f

Fruits Gone Bad - They Aren't Picked Ripe - Which Ones Ripen Off The Plant?
    2008-04-13 20:03:00
It’s always a guessing game buying produce in the store. The fruit is never sweet, tomatoes don't taste like a tomato, in short, the taste leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't remember the last fully ripe juicy peach I had.The produce is being picked before it's ripe so the taste isn't there. Some fruits and veggies only ripen on the plant while some only ripen after being picked. Here's the list:· Fruits that NEVER ripen after they are picked:soft berries, strawberries, blueberries, etc. , cacao, cherries, grapes, citrus fruits, lychees, olives, pineapples, and watermelons.· Fruits that ripen ONLY after picking: avocados.· Fruits that ripen in color, texture, and juiciness but NOT in flavor or sweetness after picking: apricots, blueberries, figs, melons (except watermelons), passionfruit, peaches, and persimmons.· Fruits that get sweeter after they are picked: apples, cherimoyas, kiwi, mangoes, papayas, pears· Fruits that ripen in EVERY way after picking: bananas.Source - J

Do Birds Know More About Eating Fruits Than Humans Do?
    2008-04-02 19:41:00
Fruit-eating birds actively select fruit with the highest concentrations of antioxidants – compounds that help them maintain a healthy immune system – ecologists have found. This is the first time that a group of antioxidants known as flavonoids have been found to boost the immune system in studies on living animals, as opposed to test-tube studies. The results are published online in the British Ecological Society’s Functional Ecology.Researchers from the University of Freiburg and the Max Plank Institute for Ornithology in Germany offered a group of blackcaps a choice of two foods. The foods were identical in all respects except for the amount of flavonoids they contained, and the researchers found that the blackcaps actively selected the food with added flavonoids. As well as the food selection experiment, the study also looked at whether or not the flavonoids had an impact on the birds’ health. They found that, compared with birds not fed the antioxidants, blackcaps that ate

Helping Kids Enjoy More Fruits and Vegetables
    2008-03-05 11:52:00
My Health - It can be tough to get kids to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Don’t force the foods, but continue to offer a variety. Try these ideas:Set a good example by eating fruits and vegetables yourself. You are a role model for your kids in so many ways. Eating is no exception. When your kids see you eating and enjoying fruits and vegetables, they will too.Offer lots of choices. Give children a choice of fruits for lunch. Let them help decide on the dinner vegetables or what goes into the salad.Let your children help. Kids enjoy helping in the kitchen, and are often more willing to eat foods they help choose and prepare. Depending on their ages, kids can help shop for, clean, and prepare fruits and vegetables.Keep foods separate. Kids often prefer foods served separately. If they want to mix peas and corn, let them do it themselves.from U. S. Department of Agriculture. © My Health Some right reserved.

Preparing Thai desserts can be a daunting task for the unmotivated as it is a surprisingly labour intensive and time consuming process. This is why in days of old Thai desserts were only made for special occasions, such as religious celebrations and the visits of important guests.Small and delicate in form, Thai desserts are often regarded as the "duty" of highly respected Thai ladies. Usually, the sweet delights are prepared with only natural ingredients, even when it comes to colouring. Shop with your head, not with your belly! If you’ve got salty and sugary snack foods filling your cupboards, it’s not going to be easy to stick to that diet. When you’re at the grocery store, don’t even go into the snack aisle, and instead spend more time in the fruits and veggies section.

    2007-05-02 06:01:00
EXT. GARDEN OF EDEN. DAY.Adam is busily scribbling on a piece of paper with a pencil when God quietly walks up beside him.God: Hey Adam, what's up?Adam: Oh, uh... hey, there, God. I was just, you know, coming up with some more animal names.God: I thought you named all the animals already.Adam: The Mediterranean animals, yeah. But I figure that you've got a lot of animals in other climates that still need names.God: What's a 'polar bear'?Adam: Geez, I don't know. A bear that like poles? You don't have to use it if you don't want.God: No, no, it's a good name. I'll come up with something. Ooh, I like this one. Kangaroo. Sounds like something you could put in your pocket. Speaking of which, I noticed you're wearing trousers stitched together from leaves.Adam: Oh, that. Yeah, I was feeling a little self-conscious with all my, you know, parts hanging out.God: Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?Adam: Ummmm... Actually that was the woman.God: The woman?
