Trade Alert: Proctor & Gamble (PG)
    2008-12-22 14:32:41
In the last hour of trading I sold PG Jan 57.5 puts for $1.30 ($130) per contract. The Dow was down 160 and the stock was trading at 59.80 or so. If the stock is put to me my cost basis will be $56.20 and I'll immediately write near the money covered calls. During the panic selling of October and November the stock never closed below $57.37.PG is a blue chip that I am happy owning. It has a rising dividend. Even during bad times I think we'll still be shaving and brushing our teeth....

Procter and Gamble, A Case for Going Long
    2008-07-09 11:22:00
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Procter and Gamble (PG) is the largest consumer household products maker in the world. Operating in the non-cyclical sector, the company sells goods that people use daily. Its brands include Charmin, Cover Girl, Crest, Duracell, Gillette, Iams, Ivory, Mr. Clean, Olay, Pantene, and Tide, to name just a few. Twenty four of its brands make over $1 billion in sales annually.Procter and Gamble has been around since 1837. The firm has paid investors dividends since 1891, and has increased those payments every year for the last 52 years. As of writing, PG's shares are off about 15.2% from its 52 week high, set in December 2007. While the stock may certainly go lower, now may be a good time for buy and hold investors to start a position or add to one.First, consider the headwinds the company faces:1. As raw materials costs continue to rise, gross margins may suffer.2. Sales growth is slowing in mature markets. Western Europe and US growth rates are both down, ...

To those that like a Gamble
    2008-06-22 00:00:00
Tell me. What’s the odds an elephant will fly in outer space, or lasting Love will emanate throughout the human race? Or what’s the odds a conker having read of William’s fight, would presume itself noble and pursue title of knight? What’s the odds a blue baboon whilst crooning moonlit tune, would grab hold of an old buffoon and dance the rigadoon? Or what’s the odds of atmosphere diminishing from sky, or raging rivers receding until their ripples trickle dry? What’s the odds that arrogance will never show contempt, or odds of winning lottery at very first attempt? Or what’s the odds that mankind will see cooling of the sun, before he sees total eradication of the gun? What’s the odds those countries with aspiring nuclear itch, will have a hand that hovers and is prone to nervous twitch? Or what’s the odds geneticists will pluck a porcupine, to impale politicians, so at last they have a spine? Totalize, talk to your tipsters, raise the stakes, mull over mixtures, ha...

See erotic picture, make financial gamble
    2008-04-05 00:51:00
Scientists find sex and risking money link in brain WASHINGTON - A NEW brain-scan study may help explain what is going through the minds of financial titans when they take risky monetary gambles: sex. When young men were shown erotic pictures, they were more likely to make larger financial gambles than if they were shown a picture of something scary, such as a snake, or something neutral, such as a stapler, university researchers reported. The arousing pictures lit up the same part of the brain that lights up when financial risks are taken. 'You have a need in an evolutionary sense for both money and women. They trigger the same brain area,' said Northwestern University finance professor Camelia Kuhnen who conducted the study with a Stanford University psychologist. Their research appears in the current edition of ...

    Speculators gamble on local property
    2008-03-23 02:22:00
Speculators have been bargain-hunting after falls in property prices at many construction projects in Ho Chi Minh City. The city’s overheated property market began cooling in the wake of a series of new government policies, including the proposed introduction of a progressive land tax, an increase in loan interest rates and restrictions on bank lending for property. With many investors,...

    Qatar's dangerous gamble
    2008-02-26 14:23:12
I just wrote a piece for the Middle East Times on Qatar's diplomatic strategy. You can read the whole piece here . Here is an excerpt: Two major projects that were undertaken at the start of the reign of the new sheik were the TV channel al-Jazeera (launched in 1996) and Qatar Airways (really started in 1997). In just a few years, al-Jazeera has become a household name. Qatar Airways is now a huge multinational with 12,000 employees, 58 planes and 70 destinations and it just ordered 80 Airbus A350s...(read more)...

EliteXC makes bad gamble with Kimbo Slice - 09 Nov 2007 03:10:37am
    2007-11-08 21:10:37
By Todd Martin Saturday night, Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson makes his EliteXC debut. Slice signed a multiyear contract with EXC in the past month and since then has been heavily promoted by the organization. Why is Slice the most heavily promoted fighter on EXC's upcoming card? He doesn't have an amateur wrestling pedigree. He isn't an accomplished jiu jitsu practitioner. He isn't a Muay Thai standout. In fact, he has only one sanctioned fight, and that was an exhibition against 46-year-old boxer Ray Mercer. Slice isn't being promoted for any of those reasons. Rather, EXC is hoping to capitalize on his fame as an underground street fighter. This is a mistake. EXC's promotional philosophy is a sound one. It realizes better than most of UFC's competitors that MMA is built around star power. There are plenty of talented MMA fighters, but not all have the charisma, personality, fighting style or life story that can bring in the masses. Stars are needed to attract new fans and garner significant interest. Thus, the company has focused on signing potentially marketable fighters like Frank Shamrock, Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler and Gina Carano. This philosophy led the company to Slice. Slice's unique look and background make him a novelty. He will never be just another MMA fighter. But the positives are greatly outweighed by the many negatives that come with getting behind Slice. To begin with, his fame is not as great as many seem to believe. He made his name in Internet message board forums based on online fights, but that community has never been large enough to make a major show profitable. The internet MMA community is small relative to the audience that watches EXC on Showtime, and miniscule relative to the broader UFC audience that EXC hopes to tap into. Slice's fight with Mercer ran on pay-per-view and generated very little interest even with the novelty of Slice's first sanctioned fight. Slice won&#...

    Is Gaither worth a gamble?
    2007-07-04 07:04:25
Sometimes it's nice to have friends in high places. The NFL's Supplemental Draft is July 12th, and I only bring it up because of the buzz being generated by one of the players likely to be available in that draft. That would be University of Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither, a 6-foot-9, 350-pound behemoth. Most early reports have Gaither, who is academically ineligible to play this season, penciled in as a guy who would likely have been selected in the middle of the first round in the regular 2008 NFL Draft. Internet boards are abuzz with Gaither talk. Everybody seems to be wondering just how good this guy is, and whether or not it would be worth it for their team to take a flier on him. In case you don't know, if you bid on a player in the supplemental draft and win his rights, you lose the corresponding draft pick in the next regular draft. So, if a team puts in a third-round bid on a player and gets him it loses its third-round selection in the next draft. ...
